Louis Jean François Lagrenée, French painter, 1725/1805

A student of Carle van Loo, admitted to the Royal School of Protected Students, Lagrenée won the Prix de Rome in 1749 and stayed at the Villa Medici, Académie de France in Rome from 1750 to 1754.

Self-portrait at age 28 made in Rome, the painting bears this inscription: "L. De Lagrenée arrivé à Rome le 13 nov. 1750 peint par luy-même""

At 24 years old, the young Lagrenée must have taken great pleasure in caressing this languorous canvas with his brush...

A prolific artist, Lagrenée stands out particularly in the small cabinet paintings with gallant mythologies, graceful allegories that amateurs snapped up.

His refined and suave style imitated by the Bolognese painters of the Seicento earned him the flattering nickname of “modern Albani”.

His brother, Jean Jacques LAGRENÉE, 1739/1821 also a painter was appointed in 1785, with Boizot, co-artistic director of the Manufacture de Sèvres. Author in 1787 of the Etruscan service for the Queen's dairy in Rambouillet, Lagrenée designed the famous “bowl-sein”.

The soft porcelain bowl is independent of the hard porcelain tripod, decorated with goat heads, on which it rests. Contrary to legend, it was not "molded" on the breast of Queen Marie-Antoinette.

L’identité des six personnages du tableau [il s’agit des “martyrs de Prairial”] n’est pas toujours certaine. À terre, ensanglanté, le dos au spectateur, ce ne peut qu’être ROMME (né en 1750), qui le premier se frappa au visage. À gauche, ce serait GOUJON (1766), qui va se donner un coup mortel au cœur et qui aurait prononcé ces dernières paroles : “Je meurs, pour le peuple et pour l’égalité.” Derrière lui, sans doute faut-il voir BOURBOTTE (1763), animé de la fougue de la jeunesse et qui imite le geste de Goujon. Les trois autres personnages, échelonnés sur les marches à droite, sont DUQUESNOY (1749), SOUBRANY (1752) et DUROY (1753), mais en l’absence de renseignements précis, leur identification demeure conjecturale.
