Two collections collide

Everyone knows I collect plants but did you know I also clean and collect skulls? Many people in my family and circle of friends hunt fish and trap. Many are also pagan or live a fairly paganesk life style and respect the lives they take. All of the animals killed are eaten and all parts of the animal are put to use. However, some parts are hard to make any use of, like the heads. That's where I come in. I take the heads of the animals from my hunter friends and clean the flesh and such off the bones. This is a huge process and in order to get museum quality it can take me over a year to clean one skull.

I do this not because I lack respect for these animals but because I love them just as much in death as I did in life. Cleaning these skulls is my way of paying tribute for their sacrifice and for feeding my friends and family. This cougar was hunted by my friend and was his first ever cougar. This is now something he will pass down to his son and so on. A new family tradition and I was apart of it. By cleaning this skull for him, it will last many years and his family and future generations will get to see where it all started every time they look at it. Death is an important part of the circle of life. I'm glad I can help honour it.

Bone cleaning a found otter that an eagle had dropped off in the meadow. Got excited when I saw that the cartilage was still attached! Bubbly nasal turbinates on a Sunday morning. I am offline most of today as I will be doing the unglamorous side of my art. Processing roadkill is icky and a long task. This roadkill deer I picked up a couple of months ago. He's still degreasing, but while I was changing his water I took this as I know you all like a good snout pic. This raccoon was on the Shelton Beach Rd extension in Prichard, not far from where the red fox was laying. He had such a beautiful tail and coat, but nature had made its way to him before I could, so neither were salvageable. My numbers are high right now, and I’m working to get as much done before the weather starts cooling down and slowing the process. I currently have 11 animals in maceration, a method that works best with heat and moisture because it cultivates bacteria that breaks down the tissue. This rain hasn’t been the most permitting for work, but this weekend should give me a little time to play catch up. These might not look like much but these are bones from a giraffe! They are unfused parts of the tail vertebrae from a younger giraffe, so they look like discs which are smooth on one side and textured on the other side. I'm selling these, I used some for jewellery and I sold all the remaining smaller ones in glass vials, these ones are too big for any vials I've got though hehe.
