Tumblr media
The Taiwanese Pork Festival is back! Discover the Rich Flavors of Taiwanese Pork just in time for the holiday season. From September 6-9, 2024, the "Love Taiwan: Taiwanese Pork Festival 2024" will bring the vibrant culture and culinary excellence of Taiwan to Metro Manila.
Tumblr media
The first event started off at the BGC Amphitheater: a four-day celebration that brought together food lovers to experience the authentic taste of Taiwanese pork, celebrated globally for its quality and flavor.
Tumblr media
The festival is inspired by Taiwan’s famous night markets, known for their bustling energy and delectable street food. At the "Love Taiwan" event, visitors sampled a wide variety of Taiwanese pork dishes, each prepared with premium pork that has been expertly raised and processed in Taiwan. Taiwanese pork is renowned for its tenderness and rich taste, thanks to the country’s commitment to high farming standards and sustainable practices.
Tumblr media
This festival is sponsored by the Taiwan Ministry of Agriculture. Taiwanese pork is a staple in Taiwanese cuisine, used in a variety of traditional dishes such as Lu Rou Fan (braised pork rice) and Gua Bao (meatball and sausages). The festival features these classics alongside innovative new creations, giving visitors a chance to explore both familiar and novel flavors.
Tumblr media
During the first event of the festival – the outdoor bazaar at the BGC Amphitheater – dishes and delicacies using Taiwanese pork will take center stage. Diners can expect beloved classics like Pork Rib Soup, Taiwanese Pork Sausage in various flavors, Pork Bone Soup, and Jinhua Ham; as well as new unique offers like Hot & Spicy Pork Trinity Soup, Champion Braised Pork Rice, Black Pepper Almond Crisp Pork Paper, Pork Floss & Jerky, BBQ Bacon Jerky, and even Filipino-style Braised Pork.
Tumblr media
In addition to the culinary delights, the festival will offer a full cultural experience with traditional cultural performances, including a traditional dragon dance and live entertainment by Brazilian DJ and electronic music producer DJ Luane.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ambassador Wallace Chow from Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in the Philippines, graced the festival and met with all the suppliers and brands in attendance and wished every Filipino to enjoy the Taiwanese pork products.  The festival was also welcomed by the Commerce Development Research Institute (CDRI), which highlighted the importance of Taiwanese pork in the global market.
Tumblr media
The four-day outdoor bazaar from September 6-9 at the BGC Amphitheater was attended by eager foodies who can enjoy free tastings of different Taiwanese pork products as well as join daily raffles, games, and giveaways where they got a chance to win exciting prizes.
Tumblr media
Excited foodies also had the chance to try Taiwanese products from brands like Hightower, Bassotto, Black Ridge, Cha Shan Foods, Du Hsiao Yueh, Food Lee, Hair, Jin Tian Foods, Odiva, Pure Foods Asia, Taiwan Farm Industry, Wayfong Food,  Pinpu, Wan You Quan, and Atemoya.
Tumblr media
Make sure to visit the Love Taiwan Pork Festival at the BGC Ampitheatre and enjoy all the Taiwan pork specialties.

I went to the 2024 Philippine Air Force (PAF) Symposium in Pasay last Month of June 2024, but I didn’t get to see much as I went there a bit late already. There were some Scale Models, Full Scale Mock Ups (FSMU) and an interesting Banner by the Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI)

Day 10: In Manila To Catch Up With An Old Friend
Today, I woke up late but early enough to figure out my flight home before my lunch meeting with Andrea. After washing up and making a call to an EVA Air agent who confirmed that I was good to go on my originally booked flight, I was finally ready. Luckily for me, I didn’t have to hail a Grab taxi; instead, Andrea had instructed her parents’ driver to drop me off at her office building where I would meet her before walking out to grab lunch closeby. After a short drive, he dropped me off at Andrea’s parents’ company’s building (they might own the building?) in Bonifacio Global City, the business part of town that Andrea worked in, where I waited for Andrea to finish a meeting before going out for lunch.
Her meeting ended late so I ended up having to wait for a bit. Eventually, she came down to meet me in the lobby and we were then off to lunch. We walked around the area and ended up getting lunch at Green Pastures, a healthy food place closeby. After perusing the menu, we ordered the Nose To Tail Cauliflower Bowl (Lechon Sisig) and an Umami Bowl with some healthy juices to drink. It was a good, healthy-tasting meal to have after a few days of not so great eating. We caught up over lunch about everything we had missed in each other’s lives since Stanford but couldn’t get to everything because she had to meet up with her family at the Shangri-La Hotel around the corner for an ING promo event where she was supposed to pick up her new iPhone. At the ING event, I ended up meeting her dad Stephen Sy and two of her sisters, her older sister Stephanie and her younger sister Angela. Because it took awhile to wait for the iPhone distribution process, we sat there and continued chatting until Andrea finally got it. After claiming her prize, we strolled back to her office where I dropped her off before continuing to wander around the area until her workday was over.
I ended up walking through Bonifacio High Street, a street lined with brand-name stores and restaurants, while killing time and waiting for Andrea. I took a peek into Fully Booked Bookstore and ended up hanging out there for a while, slowly walking through each floor until I had seen all five floors, after which time I left the bookstore to continue my exploring. But around this time, the rain started to fall. Instead of walking too far from Bonifacio High Street, I just stayed in the area to avoid getting too wet with my camera on me. I strolled into and out of a couple of stores until the rain finally started to calm down and eventually stop. When the rain stopped, I jumped over to a little shopping center I had found and walked through there looking for a place to grab a drink. I didn’t find anything worth purchasing but sat around to rest before getting back up on my feet.
By this time, it was getting close to late afternoon. With some time left, I decided to roam the streets of BGC with the goal of finding as many wall murals as possible before dinner (supposedly, over the years, they have had artists paint murals in BGC). So I started my scavenger hunt for public art murals in the area. After seeing a couple, I spotted a Chatime boba shop. Just what I was looking for! Boba was really what I was craving for my thirst so I stopped by Chatime for some boba before continuing my hunt. I walked around and through and past cars stuck in post-work traffic and saw a couple murals before it finally got dark. It was time to start walking back to meet up with Andrea.
Once she was done with her work day, she again met me downstairs and we walked a block or so to dinner at Manam, a restaurant that was very well known and popular for its traditional Filipino comfort food. Because I didn’t know what I wanted to order, I let her do all the ordering since she had strong recommendations for some dishes. We ended up ordering House Crispy Sisig, Pancit Palabok, and a dessert of Bibingkang Ube. Even though my appetite wasn’t yet back to 100%, the food was delicious! The House Crispy Sisig was like crispy pork that was well seasoned. Pancit Palabok was crispy rice noodles soaked in egg (I think) with some mushrooms, shrimp, and squid in it. Yum! And the Bibingkang Ube was a dessert similar to warm pound cake with ube on it. A delicious dinner and a great catch-up conversation lasting close to three whole hours! Productive and fun!
After a long time sitting on our butts and eating, we finally got up to walk it all off before getting picked up by Andrea’s driver. Once we were at home, she showed me around the entire house and brought her mom down to say hi (I met her mom ages ago on Andrea’s first day at Stanford and she still remembers me!). Before showering and packing for the airport, we fit in another hour of chatting and catching up before I REALLY had to get ready and head to the airport. But before long, I was all clean and all packed and ready to go. Sadly, the trip to Manila was very short and I didn’t get to hang out with Andrea as much as I would have liked. But the time we did spend together after 7-8 years was super productive! A very well-spent 24 hours in Manila!
Once I had signed their guestbook and said goodbye to Andrea, her kind driver drove me to the airport and dropped me off at my terminal. And man was I lucky in getting there a bit early because the line to check into my EVA Air flight was devastatingly long. I waited and waited and waited until I finally got to the check-in desk and received my boarding tickets. Shortly after, I was through security and at a lounge, where I spent about an hour hanging out before boarding my very early morning flight to Taipei. Taiwan, here I come again! For one long, hopefully productive layover!
5 Things I Learned Today:
1. Bonifacio Global City, also known as BGC, is a financial district in Manila that was built on an old army base that was sold to developers and real-estate people some 20-30 years ago. Over that time, the area has developed at an exponential rate and has now become the booming commercial and financial area in Manila.
2. Focus Global Inc. is a company that specializes in marketing and distribution and is one of the leading distributors in the Philippines of local and imported products, like Tempur-Pedic and Ethan Allen brands. AND, Andrea’s family owns the company. Whoa.
3. You can’t get free WiFi ANYWHERE in the Philippines and Singapore without a local phone number. Why do people make life so hard??
4. The Philippines were once colonized by the United States for something like 48 years after a long history of colonization by Spain. The Philippines were even occupied by Japan for a short period of time from 1942-1945 during WWII.
5. Sisig is a dish that is mostly composed of leftover pork parts that haven’t been used for other dishes that are then chopped up and cooked on a sizzling hot plate and served with rice.

Cafe Alegria’s Taco Tuesdays Offers Street Tacos and Cocktails All Night Long
It’s Taco Tuesday once again at Café Alegria and I’m here to party the night away with these delectable street tacos and overflowing cocktails at this amazing streetside venue. Who cares if it’s not even the middle of the week yet? It definitely feels like a Friday whenever Cafe Alegria rolls out their live comal station for everyone to see and enjoy.
Café Alegria is a hip hangout spot at the Forbestown BGC area serving contemporary Latin American cuisine. They serve breakfast and lunch specialties all throughout the week, but for tonight I’m here with my friends for a special weekly event that promises to be full of great street food and bubbly beverages with a refreshing party vibe.
Taco Tuesday at Café Alegria happens every Tuesday afternoon and offers their signature street tacos for only P129 per piece. That’s an amazing promotion that is sure to bring everybody here, especially with their other cocktail and bevarage promos.
You can enjoy these tacos in the company of your friends or workmates while enjoying the fabulous beats put together by their resident DJs. For that evening, DJ Francie Gee took care of the beats with her playlist.
Café Alegia has a casual and refreshing ambiance with its colorful murals and Mexican decors and trinkets. You can choose to have your tacos at the al fresco area outside or here inside their air-conditioned dining space.
You can order some refreshing cocktails while waiting for your tacos like the Sangria (P350). Their Happy Hour happens daily from 4:00pm to 8:00pm so you can get Buy 1 Take 1 on their classic and signature cocktails.
During Taco Tuesdays, Café Alegria also offers 3 Shots of Jose Cuervo for only P500 so you can dare your friends to have as many shots as they can. You can also get 50% off on your second bottle of Jose Cuervo.
For appetizers, we had these delicious fluffy Brazilian bread rolls called Pao de Quiejo that you can dip in their special guava sauce. There’s also honey and butter dips if you prefer.
Of course, the main highlight of the evening were the street tacos that were all cooked and prepared right there in front of all the guests and passers-by to see.
Chef Charles Montanñez brings out the live comal station for Taco Tuesdays and this is where the action happens. I could hear the oven firing away and could smell the Porchetta and other items cooking because we were seated just in front of the station. I couldn’t wait any longer so I just had to have my tacos right now!
I started with their Pork Carnitas with its slow cooked pork, pickled onions, and salsa XO. All their tacos come with homemade corn tortilla tacos and are served with salsa roja and salsa verde.
Another item I tried was the Baja Fish Fry which comes with chipotle mayo and pineapple salsa. This is a lighter taco for those who prefer seafood.
The Beef Birria was one of the favorites that evening. Birria is a Maxican beef stew so the meat is very tender and falls apart similar to pulled pork. This taco comes with Jalisco beef stew, cheese, and beef consomme.
Another option for the health-conscious is the Vegetarian Birria with its pulled king oyster mushroom, cheese, and Mexican mushroom consomme.
Other items you can try include the Beef Guisado which has slow cooked beef, cilantro, and crispy onions. There’s also the Chicken Barbacoa with its Thai grilled chicken, pickled apple, cucumber and carrot plus salsa bruja.
There are several sauces to choose from and you can request any of these to go with your tacos. It’s impossible to have just one taco, so order an many pieces as you like since they are only P129 each. We ended our Taco Tuesday with their Churros (P230) that come with dulce de leche dip.
We would like to thank Chef Charles Montañez for all the wonderful tacos that evening and our good friend Chinkee Koppe for inviting us and hosting this fabulous event at Café Alegria. Taco Tuesday happens every Tuesday afternoon until late in the evening so make sure to take advantage of this weekly promotion.

What It’s Like Staying At Grand Hyatt Manila
Tumblr media
Grand Hyatt Manila is a posh luxurious hotel that just started operating last year. If you’re looking for a place to stay in Taguig, why not give this hotel a try?
Recently turned 24 and I decided to spend my birthday weekend in Bonifacio Global City. Choosing a place to stay in for the night was not difficult because Grand Hyatt Manila was an option.
Upon arriving in the hotel, I instantly noticed how stinky their lobby was. The dreadful stink lingered the entire day and no one from their staff did anything about it until the next day! I was clearly disappointed with this because a luxurious hotel was clearly failing when it comes to hygienic purposes.
Stayed in their 1 King Bed Room + extra bed where everything was absolutely splendid. They gave us a room with a “view” although it was just a bunch of boring buildings.
Tumblr media
Said bed:
Tumblr media
The room has a work desk area with electrical and USB outlets in the side where you can charge your gadgets as you work.
Tumblr media
They have a mini lounging area in the room where you can sit back and relax or invite your guests for a quick chat.
Tumblr media
Their elegant bathroom has both a shower area and a bath tub. Pick your poison! Unfortunately, I only got to use the shower area because I was too lazy to warm up the bath. :(
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course the bathroom was complete when it came to toiletries - everything you would need and want were available. They have the June Jacobs brand as their complete hair and body care package.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My biggest concern was the separate toilet room from the bathing area. There was no bidet available where you can wash your parts after every usage. Nobody bothered suggesting to include bidets when they were constructing the hotel???
Tumblr media
Complimentary coffee and tea was available.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I appreciated that their walk in storage had a mini sofa where you can sit when you want to wear your shoes. You can also find your hotel slippers in here too.
Tumblr media
I wasn’t able to explore their gym area so I settled for their poolside area. The place was absolutely relaxing and I felt like a pampered guest when I visited. I got temporarily separated from my family and I appreciated that the poolside desk lady knew my family name and guided me to where my family was. Kudos to her! <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their pool was quite big but a bit shallow. Perfect for the kids but terrible for the adults. Nothing fun to do around here except taking a couple of drinks. You don’t have to bring your towels because the staff would offer complimentary towels if you ask for it.
Tumblr media
Got myself a lychee vodka. :)
Since I didn’t bring any money, they were okay with payment upon checkout. *thumbs up*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They also have 2 temperature-controlled jacuzzis. It can fit at least 9 people but it would be crowded.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They have a locker area where you can deposit your valuables and other items before entering the pool area.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to take a picture of their breakfast buffet area but the food they were serving there wasn’t the typical hotel breakfast buffet menu. They have numerable delicacies that were bound to satisfy your appetite.
Overall, I would rate my Grand Hyatt experience a 3.5 out of 5 stars. It was smooth-sailing but they could have done a better job when it came to multiple aspects.
