It’s been clear that the Tanizakis aren’t siblings from the very beginning
here’s some evidence now that it’s been confirmed canon…
everyone who’s read irl Tanizaki’s book knew that Junichiro & Naomi weren’t siblings as soon as they introduced themselves
BUT just because the Tanizakis aren’t siblings doesn’t mean you can’t feel uncomfortable about them. if you feel uncomfortable, GOOD. that’s exactly what they want
the Tanizakis, Mori— they all use these disturbing ruses to disarm or distract people in order to protect themselves, or to accomplish their goals. this is a writing device that asagiri commonly employs as a way to parallel the irl literature (it’s actually ingenious)
there are 4 main indicators that have always made it clear to me that Junichiro & Naomi are not siblings:
1. most obviously— their character designs. Harukawa is extremely intentional with character designs, & she very intentionally made Naomi & Junichiro look nothing alike
their eye shapes are purposely different
their color palettes are contrasting
even their differing styles of clothing have meaning
this was all done so that the audience could PLAINLY see that they’re not related— so that WE know that they’re lying when they say they ARE related
2. how the people around them respond to their act.
the general reaction is “don’t question it”— which is exactly what they want. “be distracted by how uncomfortable you feel so that you look away from what we’re hiding” (this is likely a protective measure)
3. most importantly, this is meant to parallel irl Tanizaki’s book “Naomi,” where the main character Joji picks up Naomi to raise her into his ideal woman, but since she's so young (& a minor) they call each other cousins (Joji makes no sexual advances on young Naomi btw)
however, his plan backfires because when Naomi gets older & they get married, she flips the script on him & manipulates HIM so that he's under her thumb (which is why bsd Tanizaki is at a domineering Naomi's mercy). Joji let her have her way because of his masochistic tendencies
4. lastly is the emphasis that Asagiri and the Tanizakis themselves put on calling each other siblings.
over & over, it’s “my brother this” & “my sister that”
like they’re desperately trying to convince us that it’s true (“don’t let your lying eyes deceive you”)
here are just a few of many examples from the light novels…
again, if you’ve read “Naomi” you knew that Junichiro & Naomi weren’t siblings as soon as they introduced themselves
just like if you’ve read irl Mori’s works, it’s clear that bsd Mori isn’t a pedophile
just like if you’ve read No Longer Human you know that Dazai’s an unreliable narrator. he makes you think he’s a bad person bc he believes he’s a bad person, but those around him see him differently (btw this doesn’t mean he’s never done anything “bad,” though bsd isn’t about morality— but that’s another discussion)
anyway, i’m so excited for the Tanizakis backstory to be revealed so that we can better understand why they use this defense!!
also let this be a reminder to READ THE LITERATURE if you’re able to!! even reading synopses & analyses of the coordinating books makes bsd make much more sense 🥹
reminder that this how you’re supposed to react while reading bsd:
also, if you’re interested in a post explaining how Mori isn’t a pedo, i wrote this analysis on twt. OR you can read this document that one of my moots sent me (remember: analyzing a character does NOT mean you condone any actions they may or may not commit!)
#i hope this makes sense. i’ve had this in the drafts for months but was too scared to post it#i’m hoping now that it’s confirmed canon there won’t be as much backlash ^^’ pls be kind#darcy this is for you… i hope you like it :’)#also full disclosure i haven’t been able to read all of Naomi yet. mostly synopses & analyses. so don’t take my summary of the book as law#also hopefully now people won’t ignore the Tanizakis anymore!! not only are they so interesting. they’re also just fun characters#Naomi is so underrated & intelligent. i need more of her teaming up with Dazai#rambling about bsd again#bsd#bungou stray dogs#bsd meta#bsd analysis#bsd tanizaki#bsd naomi#naomi tanizaki#tanizaki junichirou#tanizaki siblings#bsd 118

With ao3 currently offline fighting the good fight, what are your go-to reads from published folks? (totally not fishing for book recs)
Anyways, I'll start:
Legends and Lattes by Travis Baltree (reading this now btw), and Hunger Pangs by Joy Demorra (I have the flirting with fangs edition but there's a fluff and fangs edition for the smut-disinclined)
Legends and Lattes is about an orc adventurer who decides she's sick of that life and wants to open a cafe instead. Very much a feel-good fic watching someone build a comfortable life. Many shenanigans and entertaining characters <3
Hunger Pangs is about a depressed but intelligent anticapitalist vampire lord's unappreciated son helps a disabled war veteran werewolf adapt to his new reality and they also help a hot powerful [redacted] fix probably the last seal holding back the Big Baddie with his super smart sexy brain. :3
#ao3#pls answer in the reblog or notes so I can see them in the notes section on my app instead of digging thru notifs#legends and lattes#hunger pangs#book recs for while we're in the trenches#pls know these are the most barebones synopses ever but I wanna get to reading soooooooo

i love seeing normal people recommend books/movies/shows because they're just like "i enjoyed this! i think you'd enjoy it."
meanwhile when i recommend books/movies/shows i'm like "here is a fragment of my soul. here is one of the many threads that weaves me together. here is something i will love with every fiber of my being until those fibers come undone at the end of my life. hope you like it too!"
#like don't even get me started on my favorite novels because we will be here for the next month and a half#a classmate once asked me for some book recommendations because he wanted to get back into reading#and i think he was expecting a list of titles#but instead i sent him a 3 page google doc of books + star ratings + mini synopses + what i think he would like about each#and i think that sums up me as a person quite well#personal#books

Erzsébet, Prince of Dusk
BY POPULAR DEMAND lolol Erzsy is first
It first depends on who are you are? Are you a courtier, a Prince, one who chooses to delve in politics and purple blooded curses who would meet the enigmatic Prince of Dusk, or are you one who chooses to dance along the tiles of rooftops than a waltz who would glimpse the golden eyed shadow against a night sky? Courtly intrigue on the one hand, as the 77 Princes are wont to do, and her name being an irrefutable ties with Syndicate houses which would make for a strong but infamous ally. Or the mysterious if roguish thief in leathers who may be friend and/or rival to you, a legend in flesh, if only known of in whispers --- Or perhaps you're lucky enough to see both sides to this coin.
Camy "Rosa" Rose
(As much as I love it I can't keep using that one comm of Camy, sorry Camy)
The neon lights, the dancing bodies, the pounding beat of a rock anthem all combined with the smell of smoke, sweat, and alcohol. With the silver-haired lead singers eyes on you, and you alone. Backstage and parties aren't all there is to the artist known as Rosa's life but it's one she's happy to have you be a part of. Or so it seems. Sex, drugs, and rock n' roll is the life, right? But do you only want to be a groupie for this burgeoning band, or do you want more from the fun-loving, easy-going rockstar in the making? When she sings when she finds you in the crowd, does the audience melt away to her like it does to you? Or is some long lost hurt of hers getting in the way of that? Before getting too close to Camy, you might realize why they say every Rose has its thorns. Also you might not need to defeat 7 evil exes but one evil ex named Seven
Synnaeth Ama'stacia
(some absolutely stunning art of synne as a gift ty SO MUCH AGAIN AAA)
Nearly two hundred years of perfection and poise has culminated into the elf before you; pay every mind to the silver scales along her skin, and ignore the rest if you please. Her lineage is what is important to her, the ancestry she and she alone can wield. She carries the ferocity and fierceness of frost in her facade and the weight of winter in her blood. And she is your companion on this adventure. Whether you indulge in her mithril-like hold on her power and emotions, or seek to reveal the tempest (and dragon) within is up to you! With her icy, perfect, demeanor she may not bother with such a dalliance, but perhaps there is a way to melt away the ice around her heart.
Naressa and Matyas under the cut!
Naressa
Run.
Not that it will save you. Not that it could ever save you. She is as inevitable as death and lo, it comes for you.
Or maybe not this time; for despite the darkness of her eyes and raven-like hair, she is not death, not today. Not now, at least. She is your companion and perhaps a blade to wield should her priorities align with you. Or perhaps you can see that it is not a void, but she is instead devoid of something and now seeks to fill it, to discover what it is she's lost, and through that is able to find some measure of herself -- and you.
Will death take you, or does death become you as her partner? Should you even take such a risk?
Mátyás Szervác
A sunny day and a strange hat, this traveler is only by for a short time. A traveling academic, he says he is, and for all his equipment and the book he scribbles in, it is easy to believe he is what he says. Or perhaps it is so easy because of his glittering charm?
Or that hint of a Zarkanian accent?
Zarkanian academics mean their mages: their devil-loving destroyers, who use the very magic of hell to warp reality into the blood-cursed Princes cruel design. But nothing about the man belies such an origin. Perhaps he is what he says, and perhaps -- while he is in town -- you can share nights and stories in equal measure. Or perhaps you can glimpse at the weariness, the loneliness of this hermit;
or how he is working on something far greater and far more deadly than any of his countrymen and their magic could dream of.

so it’s been a while since I’ve read the heroes of olympis books (tbh I think I dropped off after house of hades) and I forgot how WILD jason’s backstory is. he’s a child of the big three, he was raised by wolves, he joined the legion when he was like four, he was handpicked by a goddess to be her champion, he defeated a titan in hand to hand combat, and then has his memories wiped by previously mentioned goddess. how he ended up so normal (in demigod terms) is fascinating. I need to study him.
#like I said it’s been a while since I’ve read the books so tbh I don’t remember a lot about his pov but I NEED to reread#and get beyond my first impression of ‘who the fuck is this guy he’s not percy’#heroes of olympus#jason grace#this was prompted by me and my friend watching pjo together and trying to remember the timeline of the first book#and then looking up the plot synopses of the rest of the series plus hoo and toa and it’s WILD I need to read those books#but jason grace is like embodiment of ‘my life’s already so goddamn weird this might as well happen’

You know, @alpine-hoplite, I never really put my finger on it before you started to complain about it, but it is striking how many people have extremely intense thoughts and opinions about 40k despite having absolutely zero stake in the hobby itself whatsoever
#to indulge in some gatekeeping#have you bought a single mini#let alone painted it#or you just consume bad fanfic and have decided you're in charge now#etc etc#I've gotten into conversations about this before though and the IP has gotten much bigger than just the minis at this point#I wonder how many people just join forums and track hashtags and read wiki synopses of books#and form their whole belligerent idea off that

So you are looking for a pallet cleanser of a book? A specific genre or anything is good? I want to help!
I mean I guess?? I guess I am huh xD
I want an urban or dark fantasy, easy to read, I don't care about romance because I know that comes with the genre, but I don't like ABO at ALL, which sucks because I love werewolves. I liked Kill the Queen by Jennifer Estep, but didn't like the last book of that trilogy (book two was okay). I liked the fighting, I liked that while the romantic interest was obvious it wasn't instant. It felt Normal. Like she looked at him and went "yes he IS attractive but I'm not going to do anything about it right now" and the plot moved forward.
I liked the magic in Kingdom of Exiles, but haven't read the second book in that series because it's 15$ for the ebook and um. No. Romance moved faster than Kill the Queen, but still! Same thing! While she acknowledges her attraction it doesn't take the plot sideways!
I liked what I read from the Iron Druid series, but that's not quite what I want to read? I don't really want humor focused and I think I'll find Oberon more annoying right now than funny and he deserves better :(
I read six Anita Blake novels and I will not read any more. Mercy Thompson is Fine. I've read two of them? Three? I might go to the next one if I can't find anything else. They're not quite what I want, I want more magic than they offer. I've tried reading Toby Daye and we just have not vibed. The stars are not aligned. I do not like Jennifer Armentrout or Sarah J Maas. I have not read a fae book I truly enjoy, but since that seems to be the Trend still I might have to deal with that or choose something else. I'm aware of Dresden, but not in the mood for that.
The last couple days I've tried Hunt the Night, The Serpent and the Wings of Night, The Book of Azrael, What Lies Beyond the Veil, and Daughter of No Worlds. Mostly stopped reading these because the writing was not my jam. I think part of the problem is first person is not my favorite pov, especially if it's present tense and well that also goes with the genre.
I'll look into anything but who knows what my brain will latch on to ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
#ezra gets a letter#im picky im sorry im like this#might fuck around and read TAZ#it sucks because like i dont even mind the romance in these books most of the time#i know i complain a lot about romance plots in books but when i EXPECT them i dont care#because i cant be mad for reading a romance centric book and getting romance#(and like. sometimes. i want to read a romance)#and so often the synopses of these books sound like my jam!#and then they do something :/#I dont want a slave story absolutely not#i feel like a lot of these have weak plots because its just a set to get to the sex which is FINE but not what i want lmao#i think thats the problem im running into#kill the queen and kingdom of exiles had sex and romance but it also had Plot

Also i always feel like my writing is atrophying until i read one thing that inspires me and then it’s like, oh yeah that’s how you do it. You literally have to read to write. I try to get around this fact in so many ways but it’s true
