Book Review…..The High House by Jessie Green grass In a small town where the water is rising & destroying everything, Caro, Pauly, Sally & Grandy are safe. They are living in the High house set onto a sloping hill away from the small town by the sea. Yet there are limits to their safety, limits to the supplies, limits to what Grandy the former village caretaker, a man who knows how to do everything can teach them as his health fails. Even though this is based on a horrible disaster that actually happened, imagining a climate disaster isn't too hard to picture after the year we've had. I enjoyed this book! The writing is beautiful! The pace is a little slow but it matches perfectly with the characters & the feel of the book. It has the bleak melancholy feel which isn't surprising with what has happened but it also has some warmth, the characters relationships & the bonds they create with each other is beautiful & complex. Thrilling, gripping & thought provoking! Happy reading everyone! My two cents on - The Woman in the Purple Skirt 🌸 The book starts with the narrator ‘The Woman in the Yellow Cardigan’ as she stalks ‘The Woman in the Purple Skirt’ and tries to share vivid details about her second-by-second whereabouts. In other words, she is obsessed with the woman in the purple skirt, and she describes her as “hate her or love her, but you can’t ignore her”. Furthermore, she states “Some people would pretend they hadn’t’ seen her, and carry on as before. Others would quickly move aside, to give her room to pass. Some would pump their fists and look happy and hopeful. Others would do the opposite and look fearful and downcast.” The narrator makes the woman in the purple skirt the protagonist of her life and is trying to live vicariously through her as she compares herself with her. She iterates that her life is a stark contrast to her protagonist as she is someone who is unnoticed and uncared for by the society and so she provides no details to the reader about her own life. It also hints at her unrequited desire to be friends with her and get to know her. The writer beautifully builds up the story about the narrator vigorously chasing the woman in the purple skirt and intricately steers the story as it takes a disturbingly intriguing turn towards the end. My first ever audiobook!

Amidst the chaos….I have finally managed to complete my first ever audio book!

I can’t say I’m a fan of audio books, they talk too slow and I get annoyed fast😂 but they’ve been great to get me through chores!

As for the book, this is my first time visiting the Middle East in my reading travels and it was like a breath of fresh air to experience a new culture!

Over the weekend I received Don’t Look Back by Rebecca Barrow.

Don’t Look Back follows Harlow who is always on the run with her mother. She is not really sure what they are running from and if it is real but when it comes to running in the middle of the night again, Harlow and her mother get in a car accident. Sadly, Harlow’s mother does not make it and as her mother is passing away, her mother tells Harlow two things: to never stop running and where to find a key to a safety deposit box. In the safety deposit box, Harlow discovers about 30k in cash, life insurance documents, several fake IDs, and an on-the-run essentials kit. But that is not all she finds. She ends up finding a photo of her mom when she was teenager, a deed to a house in a town she has never heard of, and a bunch of newspaper clippings that are about a disappearance of a woman named Eve Kennedy. Eve Kennedy just happens to be Harlow’s grandmother. Harlow has some choices to make: follow the breadcrumbs of her mother’s hidden past or to choose her own future.

Don’t Look Back comes out on October 3rd and is a YA Mystery/Thriller with Horror elements in it. It is marketed for fans of Courtney Summers and Tiffany D. Jackson. It looks like it will have a diverse cast of characters since it is mentioned there is lgtbqia+ representation and we have BIPOC characters.

I have not read this yet but am looking forward to adding this to my October tbr since I want more jarring and with a dark feeling for that month. I have been reading some reviews on Goodreads and some people say this is very shocking and amazing so that makes me really excited to read it soon.

I will update everyone on my reading progress/post a review when I finish reading this.

✨ AOTD: I just received Girl Abroad by @ellekennedy33 today in the mail. When B&N was doing their 25% off preorders, I ended up preordering Girl Abroad and Empire of the Damned. I cashed in some of my B&N reward money from the sale back in December.

A few weeks ago, I also received a book called Medea by @eilishquin, along with another book from Simon & Schuster in the mail. I'll post about the other book later.

I'm genuinely interested in this book because I'm not familiar with her in Greek mythology. I'm hoping it will have a similar vibe to Circe and Clytemnestra. Once I start reading the book, I'll provide a review and update on my progress.

I’m not going to include the synopsis since I feel like I could accidentally go into some spoilers.

✨This hurts to rate a Jennifer Weiner novel 3 stars. I've been a fan since 2008 when I read Certain Girls, which my grandmother bought me that book from a book fair at her work. What she did not know was that she was giving an adult novel to a 13-year-old. Then, I remember my art teacher coming up to me saying she was reading the same book as I, which was very, very awkward. But it was not until my college years that I picked up any book by Jennifer Weiner. I have always loved how Jennifer could suck you in with her writing and very flawed characters. Most of her books have her characters have POVs in the past and present.

✨I've always been a fan of that because I need to know all the juicy details of her characters. But what The Breakaway does is not that. We focus on the present with a few nods to the past. With The Breakaway, I was not drawn to the characters like I usually am with Jennifer's other books.

✨I enjoyed them going around New York biking and coming to different realizations about their lives as well as how to face their future.

✨But I kept getting a few characters here and there mixed up.

✨I felt like there was not many things going on with the characters that intrigued me to draw me into this book. I just thought they were okay and was like cool. I kept waiting for more backstory of the characters and more possible consequences/growth from them too.

✨Like I said: I still enjoyed this book for the most part but really, it's not love or its hate it's just indifference. I do look forward to future works by Jennifer and I think a lot of people will see the appeal of this book.

✨️I meant to post this yesterday, but I ended up editing a few photos, took a nap, and then decided I wanted a new watermark/logo. I decided I wanted to create it. This consisted of me learning how to change a photo into looking like a sketch on Photoshop. I hope it looks alright. Also, I got a new phone, so my anesthetic may get a bit wonky due to the phone filter being different from my iPhone combined with my Lightroom preset.

✨️Today, my goal is to edit a few photos, write maybe 2-5 reviews, and finish a book so I can post the review by tonight. I'll most likely post 2 times a day for a bit since I have a lot of reviews and content I can share.

✨️Please excuse the dents/damage on this book. My lovely mailman shoved this and two other packages into my mailbox, which damaged this book and another book I posted a few days ago on here.

✨️I am looking forward to reading By Any Other Name. This book takes place in the 1500s. We follow our MFC, Will, who is a Shakespearen actor. When a famous playwright (Christopher) passes away from mysterious circumstances. Will undercovers a few of Christopher's and is forced into a new career as a spy master. He must embrace his new career or face prison.

✨️By Any Other Name is marketed towards fans of FT Lukens and MacKenzie Lee. I'm sure I'll enjoy this with the mystery and the M/M romance. Make sure to check back in the future to see my reading update and review.
