WEEK1-Getting My Research Project Started

After reviewing the bookcodes available on the Coursera site, I have decided to look for something new so I have found a database from my country’s Minister of Education: National Institute for Educational Evaluation.

The harder part was to found an Excel database, as I found several with a file extension I could not use in my computer (.sav, for instance). Finally I found a database with information about students environment and their performance.  

I have been reading carefully the codebook and I have decided to look for the link, if any, between mother’s professionnal career and girls aspirations. So here is my research question: Is the mother example, represents as her professionnal development, inspiring girls on having higher education?

Here is the link for the database I choose.

In order to create my own codebook, and as the codebook itshelf is a sheet in the Excel file, I have coloured the variables of my interest. There will be mainly 3 varables of interest: gender (to indentify the girls on the database), mother professionnal situation and desired maximum level of education.  In addition, the database gives the opportunity to evaluate many other topics such devices available at home, family situation, relationship with peers...

I made a research on the net but I have not found anything like my question. The closest I found is the relation between mother’s socio-educational level and the use (or abuse) of mobile devices. Anyway, my hypothesis is that I will find a correlation and the highest professionnal level, most likely the girls will express their desire of longer education.
