Hello everyone and welcome to my first book haul of 2023! If you’ve followed me for a little while, you might know that I like to read outside the box and not necessarily books that you see all the time here on the ‘gram. These are three such books and form part of three separate collections that I’m acquiring like a little book Gollum 😂 The first is Doorway To Dilemma: Bewildering Tales Of Dark Fantasy, part of the British Library Tales Of The Weird. Described as a book where “the weird prevails and accounts of unanswerable dilemma find their home.” Yep. #Sounds good enough for me! Secondly, I really enjoyed collecting @tiltedaxisbooks in 2022. So Distant From My Life is translated by Yarri Kamara and written by Burkinabé author Monique Ilboudo. It offers a “compelling and complex portrait of migration, one of the defining global concerns of the twenty-first century and a sharp critique of both the NGO-isation of African countries and the currents of shame that divide communities and families.” Finally, I’m either very late or super early to the party with Stories For Christmas and the festive season. 😂 This is part of the British Library Women Writers collection and the stories are “plucked from different decades of the twentieth century and penned by both familiar and forgotten authors for both books and popular magazines. From the delightful consequences of decorating the tree by Stella Gibbons, to an interesting encounter at 30,000 feet on a Christmas Day flight by Muriel Spark and a pantomime with a twist by Margery Sharpe, these stories are sure to fortify you over the Christmas period.” Erm…..maybe Christmas 2023?! 😅 I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! Hope you’ve all had a peaceful and restful holiday period. I’m back to work tomorrow but looking forward to sharing more bookish content with you this year! Have a great week everyone 🤗😘 #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #bookhaulofawesomeness #britishlibrarytalesoftheweird #doorwaytodilemma #tiltedaxispress #readingtranslatedliterature #sodistantfrommylife #moniqueilboudo #yarrikamara #storiesforchristmasandthefestiveseason https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm7ECDYL8nN/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It’s Friday!! And you know what that means, fellow bookworms. It’s another haul post! These are three beautiful hardbacks that I had been waiting to arrive for some time then Waterstones had those warehouse problems 😒 I’ve become obsessed with Greek mythology retellings so jumped at the chance to preorder Ithaca. It’s also by Claire North who wrote one of my favourite books - The First Fifteen Lives Of Harry August. Ithaca follows the story of Penelope, Odysseus’ wife who is barely into womanhood when Odysseus leaves her for war in Troy. Years later, speculation is mounting that he is dead and suitors are clambering around her, desperate to be King of Ithaca. Penelope could be one choice away from a bloody civil war. I preordered Trust as it was longlisted for the Booker in 2022. It’s set in the roar and effervescence of New York in the 1920’s where everyone has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall St tycoon and she is the brilliant daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth. However the secrets around their affluence and grandeur incites gossip. At what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? Finally, I’m back on the Greek mythology train with the wonderful Natalie Haynes and her retelling of the gorgon Medusa. I’ve often wondered if Medusa was slightly misunderstood and after having loved A Thousand Ships, I can’t wait to read Haynes take on this story which was always a favourite of mine. This is the story of how a young woman became a monster. And how she was never really a monster at all. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Hello everyone! TGIF! Today I’m sharing more of my book haul from when I went book shopping with my bestie @keeperofpages Scary Monsters was an absolute no-brainer. Three scary monsters - racism, misogyny and ageism roam through this mesmerising novel. It’s reversible format enacts the disorientation that migrants experience when changing countries changes the story of their lives. I love a book I have to flip upside down to read the second story! Shame on me, I didn’t realise that one of my favourite authors, Emma Donoghue had a new book out. This novel follows three men - a scholar/priest and two monks in seventh century Ireland who leave the sinful world behind. They find an impossibly steep island inhabited by tens of thousands of birds and claim it for God. But in such a place, far from all other humanity, what will survival mean? Finally (and totally a cover buy 😂), we have Briefly, A Delicious Life. Described as a lively, daring ghost story set in 1473, this follows a dead teenage girl who falls in love with a female writer who has no idea she exists. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors.
