Hello everyone! You know the drill, we’re halfway through the week, the weekend is in sight and I’m back today with a post inspired by the lovely Sally @salboreads who did some character pairings. That is, characters from different books who you think go well together. From The Observations, Bessy Buckley, a feisty young Irish maid and in Fingersmith, Sue Trinder, who becomes a ladies maid as part of an elaborate scheme. I think both these girls would find similarities between each other and could even learn things from the other! From The First Fifteen Lives Of Harry August, the title character Harry August and from Life After Life, Ursula Todd. Both are time travellers and could have a lot to talk about sharing their experiences and able to understand exactly what the other goes through. From Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet and from Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Tess D’Urberville. I can imagine these ladies taking long walks together and Elizabeth bringing a bit of humour and light into Tess’ life which if you’ve read the book, you can understand why she might need it! 😂 This was fun! Hoy voy a hablar de una de esas raras novelas que cogen un género o tema y le dan una vuelta de tuerca espectacular. Salvando las distancias es el libro más parecido a "La mujer del viajero en el tiempo" que he leído; ya que ambas cogen el tropo de viajes en el tiempo pero le aplican una lógica y unas reglas totalmente novedosas y para nada similares a otras novelas que comparten este mismo tropo. En este caso tengo que agradecer mucho a @canalnost el que me haya descubierto estas dos novelas. Como sabréis "La mujer…" me encantó. En el caso de "Las 15 primeras vidas de Harry August" me ha volado la cabeza, no sólo por esto que os cuento de reinventar el tropo, si no también por la propia trama. Aunque he de decir que me gustó menos de lo que esperaba y de lo que me va gustar en una segunda lectura (si algún día le encuentro hueco para re-leerla) porque se me fué la olla y no sé si entendí mal la sinopsis o qué pero el caso es que me hice una idea equivocada acerca de la trama principal del libro; y claro, yo leía y leía esperando que empezasen a tirar por la trama que me había inventado y veía que se iban por otros derroteros. Hasta que sumé 2+2 y me dije..."creo que te lo has inventado y eso nunca va a pasar. Aterriza y sigue con la trama principal que te marca el libro. Gracias." Parte de mi cerebro liándola y la otra mitad poniendo orden con la resignación que tienen las madres cuando les niñes hacen tonterías. En fin, como digo y salvando ese escollo del que entono por completo el mea culpa lo cierto es que estamos ante una novela más que interesante y que te vuela la cabeza al más puro estilo "Todos ustedes, zombies" o la ya mentada "La mujer del viajero en el Tiempo". 💖💖¿Lo has leído? These are three beautiful hardbacks that I had been waiting to arrive for some time then Waterstones had those warehouse problems 😒 I’ve become obsessed with Greek mythology retellings so jumped at the chance to preorder Ithaca. It’s also by Claire North who wrote one of my favourite books - The First Fifteen Lives Of Harry August. Ithaca follows the story of Penelope, Odysseus’ wife who is barely into womanhood when Odysseus leaves her for war in Troy. Years later, speculation is mounting that he is dead and suitors are clambering around her, desperate to be King of Ithaca. Penelope could be one choice away from a bloody civil war. I preordered Trust as it was longlisted for the Booker in 2022. It’s set in the roar and effervescence of New York in the 1920’s where everyone has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall St tycoon and she is the brilliant daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth. However the secrets around their affluence and grandeur incites gossip. At what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? Finally, I’m back on the Greek mythology train with the wonderful Natalie Haynes and her retelling of the gorgon Medusa. I’ve often wondered if Medusa was slightly misunderstood and after having loved A Thousand Ships, I can’t wait to read Haynes take on this story which was always a favourite of mine.
