Melody’s Signature Diary - Chapter 3

The more time I spent on the remix, the more it sounded like a carriagewreck. Usually I go with the flow, but even I was getting flustered. On top of that, I was wicked tired. My head dropped to my desk with a THUD and I instantly fell asleep.

CLANG "WHAT'S THAT NOISE?" Ginger shouted. Her pots and pans scattered all over our floor as she raced over and shut down my muse-ic app. "Is that the birthday remix? It's, um... really..."

"I know, I know. It's a total fairy fail," I said.

Ginger patted me on the back. "Oh, Melody, why didn't you ask for help? We're all friends."

I was ashamed. "What am I going to do? I want to help make Holly and Poppy's birthday legendary, but none of my mixers are working."

"Hmmm," Ginger pulled a green carrot and a handful of purple beans from her bookpack. "This is Bitter Witches Root. And these are Troll Slime Beans."

"Gross!" I tightened my mouth. "Totally." she reached back into her bookpack. "But when you crumble in some honeycomb and add a dash of mint, something amazing happens." She handed me a cupcake. Surprisingly, it was sweet and refreshing. "Instead of trying to mix two things that don't go together, maybe look for your secret ingredient?" She was right, and I knew hexactly where to go.

so turns out i despise making wip updates and all that jazz, but i popped in to say i finished insect poison!!! for real!!! it's significantly shorter than i thought it would be (around 34k) because i guess it decided it wants to be a novella, and i actually got an idea for a new wip so i wasn't going to argue and try to make it 60-80k like i had originally planned.

objectively speaking, the book is not good. it starts strong, but around halfway-3/4 of the way through, you can clearly see where i stopped having so much momentum and started struggling with a Writing Identity Crisis because i realized that every project i've gotten over 15,000 words into in the past four-five years is something recycled from when i was younger, insect poison included, and i was really concerned i'd never generate an idea of my own again.

then... i started reading again.

who would've thought that consuming content can help you remember what kind of content you like?? and help you realize what kind of content you want to make???

anyway, i'm starting a new novel! i have no clue what i'm doing. i'm going to structure as i go, name characters as i go, figure everything out while it's happening instead of ruining my excitement for something new while i'm still planning it. i don't want to keep drudging up old ideas right now. i have things i want to come back to someday, but i think i need to reassure myself that i can write a book that's entirely new to me. and i don't think i'm going to do traditional updates for it, either. i might do ask games, excerpts, and maybe a wip intro once i figure it out, but wip updates make me... not want to write, because the more i write, the closer i get to an update and... yeah. no.

so here's to insect poison, which taught me how to write prose again, and to my new wip, which will hopefully teach me how to write on my own again.

If Cerise planned to spoil the Legacy Day dance, Cedar was the first step in stopping her. That's because Cedar's the daughter of Pinocchio, but unlike her father, she can't tell a lie... at least not until she graduates. I arrived in the Charmitorium at just the right time! There was an open chair right next to her. I fished through my bookpack for my MirrorPad and hit record. A good journalist knows to get every word. "Cedar, have you seen Cerise?"

"Yeah, earlier when she left Mr. Badwolf's office for the village of Book End," then she suspiciously whittled, "Why do you want to know?"

"Oh, no reason." I secretly hexted Briar. If Cerise was at Book End, Briar would find out why. Don't get me wrong, it's not like Briar skips school, but when adventure calls, she always answers. I had some investigating of my own to do. As if Cerise wasn't mysterious enough, now she was sneaking out of the office of the Head of General Villainy. If she was plotting to ruin the Legacy Day dance, how did he fit in? I had to get a hexclusive interview with Mr. Badwolf.
