The importance of optics

Some days, it seemed like everybody wanted a piece of Leia. That was how it had been for most of her life; a path first chosen for her, then chosen by her, with full knowledge of the implications. Her parents, her wonderful, caring, loving parents, had modelled for her the kind of boundaries she was allowed to have, the compromises she did not have to make—but even with that, hers was a life of service. And so everybody was bound to want a piece of her—it was up to Leia to decide how much she was willing to give.

On days even worse than that, it seemed like people not only wanted a piece of her, but to slice it up themselves, dissect it, and sell the scrap to the highest bidder. That was when her charity of the self hit the limit.

We commend you for the way you handle your private life, Your Highness, you are so discreet about matters of the heart, Your Highness, of course you’re more aware than anyone of the importance of optics in the success of the new government, Your Highness, we believe it would be most advantageous to continue to pursue discretion regarding your ‘relationship’ with Captain Solo, Your Highness, it’s simply a matter of keeping our bargaining options open and ensure the future of our people, Your Highness, I know your parents would have recognized the importance of that, and that you would do anything to honour their memory, Your Highness.

Oh, Threkin Horm had chosen the absolute worst day to say those words in that order to her face. Frankly, it would have pissed her off any time, but she might have been able to brush it off had she not been dealing with too much already—including Han’s recent and mercifully brief  M.I.A. status—to also have to put up with this guy. Discretion! The main reason she and Han had been discreet was that they were still consistently being pulled apart by their respective duties, something she—and, clearly, Horm—had reason to believe would change soon.

While Leia had chosen to stay out of the politics of the diaspora, she didn’t like Horm’s swift ascent within the provisional Alderaanian Council. If he continued to believe he had any say in her life just by virtue of being a—grossly rich and powerful—survivor, then she would have to take matters into her own hands.

There had been a few possible answers to his request. Dressing him down had been the most tempting but, after taking a few seconds to consider it, Leia had decided a far more effective response would do. At the time, however, she’d thanked him for his input, and assured him that she took the importance of optics to heart.

And she did.

The campaign against the last major Imperial remnant, an annoying stone in the New Republic's shoe for the past several months, had been successful, and the provisional government was eager to welcome Han's team as heroes. In addition to the families, the press had been invited to wait for the arrival of the fleet back to Coruscant. Somehow, Threkin Horm was there as well, as Leia knew he would be. He had the uncanny ability to insert himself into almost any situation—only as long as it would report an advantage for him. What he could possibly gain from being there, Leia wasn’t sure. She suspected he just wanted the chance to monitor her closely, a reminder of their agreement.

All thoughts of Horm evaporated as soon as the Mon Remonda’s ramp lowered, and Han walked down with a swagger only Leia could recognize as a little tired. She waited with her breath trapped in her throat, her heart matching the beat of his steps as he continued forward, a little unsure of what to do with all the attention as the crowd applauded. Other soldiers began to appear behind him and, before the rest of the people waiting for their loved ones broke out of the crowd, Leia marched straight to Han.

He grinned when he spotted her, his posture relaxing at the familiar sight, and Leia could see the exact moment he realized she wasn’t stopping to say hello. Conscious of the cam droids at her back, she threw her arms around Han’s neck and kissed him, her feet leaving the ground as he caught her. Leia didn’t mean to give everyone a peep show, but it was hard to let go of Han, as weeks of worrying and yearning for him coalesced into their reunion. When she finally broke apart, she stood a moment with her forehead pressed against his, eyelashes fluttering against his cheek as she caught her breath.

‘Wow. Hi,’ Han said quietly, setting her gently back on her feet.

‘Hi.’

‘Did you miss me, or are you just usin’ me to get on the tabloids?’ He smirked at her as she held onto his arm, taking advantage of a few more seconds together while security began to herd the press into order for a brief conference.

‘Let's just say that somebody recently made me realize that I want the public to know about us. Unequivocally.’

Han’s eyes softened as he looked at her, and only her. 

‘Good,’ he said, pressing a kiss into her temple.

Out of the corner of her eye, Leia spotted a red-faced Threkin Horm shooting daggers at them, but Leia couldn’t bring herself to care anymore—her point had been made.

7j - Which of your fics is the most crack-like? Describe it badly.

I have a few fics that I've described as "crack-adjacent", but I think Nemesis is probably the most crack-like. It's the story of how a 17-year-old girl ruined a birthday gift intended for an ancient wizard.

1e - Which of your fics is your favorite? Are there any lines or sections that you think don’t belong in it?

My favorite so far is Brief Shadow, and I don't think there's anything in that fic that feels out-of-place. It's so short -- less than 800 words -- and I think everything that was left after edits is pretty consistent both tonally and thematically. If forced to pick something, I might say

She has been sitting against the trunk of a tree for hours, thighs pressed to chest, recalling the way an entirely different version of herself once sat amongst the branches of an entirely different tree, looked into the sky with a toothy grin, and tried to identify the ships that approached for landing near the palace.

but even then, I think it works just fine.

When was the first time Han and Leia admitted to themselves that they love the other one?

When was the first time Han and Leia admitted to themselves that they love the other one?

Ah, when did Han admit to himself that he loved Leia, and when did Leia admit to herself that she loved Han? This is another one that I often make vary a little depending on what fic I’m writing, but in general my headcanon is that for each of them it happened either a little while before ESB or on the way to Bespin, and for each of them it kind of snuck up on them a bit (like, they were each in denial for a good while and then one day were like “oh, shit”).

So here’s one version of that: It’s about two years after Yavin, and Han and Leia have developed a strong friendship over that time, although recently it has started to involve a bit more flirting. (Okay, a LOT more flirting.) They go on a mission together and there are several moments where they think they are cooked, but between Leia’s amazing shooting and the plan Han manages to devise on the fly, they make it back to the Falcon. After the adrenaline wears off, Leia is in Han’s bunk trying to sleep (he often lends her his cabin on missions, and this time he insisted because she was more injured than he was and he wants to make sure she gets good rest, plus he knows she’s a bit sleep deprived because she is prone to nightmares) and it suddenly hits her how close they came to dying. And that there was a moment where they genuinely thought they were going to die, and Leia felt a weird peace about it, like it made sense that they were together at the end of the world. But that at the same time, she didn’t WANT to die, she wanted to live, and she wanted Han to be there by her side, or having her back, or whatever. So that’s when Leia has her “oh, shit, I love him” realization. (She’d already realized she was attracted to him, she just had already put that aside thinking that was a luxury she couldn’t afford.)

Han has his realization not long before Leia does, after a conversation with Chewie. Han has come up with the 99,000th excuse for why they are staying with the Rebellion even though Han owes Jabba money and the Rebellion does not pay very well and it REALLY hasn’t been paying well lately, but no, it doesn’t have anything to do with Leia, certainly not. Chewie frankly does not care because he’s happy to work for the Rebellion as long as they’re serious about freeing Kashyyyk eventually, this is a way better cause than most of what they’ve done jobs for, he’s basically adopted the Little Jedi and the Little Princess, and as far as he’s concerned Cub has found the perfect mate for him. What is frustrating Chewie is that Han keeps falling back on the “I’m a ruthless mercenary who is in it for the money” thing when he gets scared of, you know, having feelings, and all of this threatening to leave every few months business is potentially fucking up Han’s potential mate. Anyway, something Chewie says about the situation stays with Han, so at some point Han actually manages to admit to himself that the reason he keeps finding reasons to stay AND the reasons he’s worried that he has to go both have to do with Leia, and that’s his, “oh shit, I love her” moment for him.

Do you have any ‘my best friend dates my sister’ situation for Luke?

So in @chancecraz ‘s Of Queens, Knights and Pawns fic, for plot reasons Luke knows that he and Leia are siblings fairly early on and Leia and Han are getting together a lot earlier in the timeline, so there’s this fun thing where when Luke and Leia talk about their respective love interests, while they may know logically that their sibling is having sex, “as far as we’re concerned, everyone only holds hands!” Which I think could be a fun thing to apply to Leia and Luke in any canon once they’re aware they are siblings. Luke REALLY doesn’t want to hear about Leia and Han’s sex life from either his sister or his best friend. (I do think that as Leia and Luke work out some Force things there might be a few hiccups if Luke and Leia’s Force bond is a little too close…but I think they’d figure out how to make that private on both sides pretty quickly, for obvious reasons).

I think what helps is that Leia, Luke, and Han were all three friends well before Leia and Han got together, with their own individual relationships with each other. So I think Leia and Han try to make sure Luke doesn’t feel left out because they’re together, and that Luke and Leia try to make sure Han doesn’t feel left out because he doesn’t have the Force. And I think sometimes Luke and Han go out and do stuff together by themselves because they really are good friends all on their own (although Han does in fact call Luke “Kid” for the rest of his life, even when everyone’s old enough to be grandparents). They go flying together and Leia’s like “if you two end up splattered on the side of a canyon or something, I swear to the Force I will bring you back to life and murder you again” even though frankly she would be just as crazy a pilot if people let her pilot more often.

I saw a terrible post about Han being a flat earther and my first thought was that you will say something about this, and the I saw your post a day later, and I think this is just hilarious

omg yes 😂 god that was the stupidest opinion?? The Force isn't a scientifically proven fact that the majority of people believe in?? (even with the whole midichlorian retcon!) LUKE doesn't know what the hell the Force is either! that one Imperial on the Death Star doesn't believe the Force is real until Vader chokes him! but sure, it's Han Solo who has flat-earther mentality 🙄 istg some opinions on this site would be better suited for a preteen's diary
