Maher Alanqar sat and watched his nephew suffer. The video — shot by a CBC News freelancer — captured every scream, every spasm as 10-year-old Adam Abu Ajwa called out for help after the home where he was sheltering with his parents and siblings in Khan Younis, Gaza was hit by a grenade on Jan. 17. Adam suffered third-degree burns; his older sister Zeina, 26, escaped with burns and broken bones after being trapped under rubble for hours. They were the only ones in the house to survive. Their mother Hana and oldest brother Amr died and were buried in the courtyard of Nasser Hospital, one of the main hospitals in the central Gaza Strip. Alanqar's mouth twitched with every scream as he watched doctors work to treat the boy's wounds without anesthesia. He told CBC News on Feb. 4 he had applied to get his sister and her kids out of Gaza under a special immigration measures program for extended family members of Palestinian Canadians. They were waiting for news when their home was hit.

It was surreal listening to my friends recount everything they had done to get me out: working with lawyers, reaching out to the media, making endless calls to detention centers, desperately trying to get through to Ice or anyone who could help. They said the entire system felt rigged, designed to make it nearly impossible for anyone to get out.

The reality became clear: Ice detention isn’t just a bureaucratic nightmare. It’s a business. These facilities are privately owned and run for profit.

Companies like CoreCivic and GEO Group receive government funding based on the number of people they detain, which is why they lobby for stricter immigration policies. It’s a lucrative business: CoreCivic made over $560m from Ice contracts in a single year. In 2024, GEO Group made more than $763m from Ice contracts.

The more detainees, the more money they make. It stands to reason that these companies have no incentive to release people quickly. What I had experienced was finally starting to make sense.

This is not just my story. It is the story of thousands and thousands of people still trapped in a system that profits from their suffering. I am writing in the hope that someone out there – someone with the power to change any of this – can help do something.

Poland’s parliament has approved controversial proposals to decriminalise in certain circumstances the use of firearms by border guards in self-defence.

Last month, a 21-year-old soldier died after he was stabbed trying to prevent migrants enter the country illegally.

- Poland’s new pro-EU government had promised a more humanitarian approach to the migrant crisis. Instead, following the soldier’s stabbing, it re-established a temporary border exclusion zone that hinders public oversight because journalists and NGOs must request passes to enter the area.

Mr Duszczyk said officers would only be exempt from criminal liability if they use their weapons in response to a direct assault to protect colleagues’ lives. “I would like to resolve any doubts about the excessive nature of these provisions,” he wrote in response to concerns raised by the Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights, Michael O’Flaherty. Mr O’Flaherty and other human rights’ organisations urged MPs to reject the proposals saying they contravene human rights’ standards. He said the new rules may remove the disincentive for border patrols to use excessive force. “It may also lead to a situation where the circumstances in which the arbitrary use of force or firearms by state agents may result in the loss of life or bodily harm are not properly investigated, particularly in cases where the victims are on the other side of the border,” he wrote in a letter to the Polish authorities.

Mr O’Flaherty appealed in a separate letter to Mr Tusk to stop the practice of migrant pushbacks, saying 7,317 people had been summarily returned to Belarus, in some cases after they had requested asylum in Poland, between December 2023 and June 2024.

NGOs estimate 130 migrants have died in the border zone in Belarus and its three EU neighbours, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia in the last three years, many succumbing to exposure in sub-zero temperatures or drowning in marshy areas.

Hello, Tatiejosie. I am on my Hands and Knees begging for the unreleased content about Sinclair and Donald. I too didn't think much of Sinclair, until I saw your comics about Sinclair being Obsessed with Donald and have Seen The Light.

My first sketches of them!! Sinclair is feral and greedy like a cat in heat, he's never been remotely interested in human contact but now the dam is broken and he's taking everything he can. Donald has a hard time processing what just happened with Sinclair, it takes a little while to transition from roughing him up for crossing boundaries to having him bent over the maintenance table. but they get there eventually.

It makes no sense and Donald wants to bash his face into the wall for losing his self-control like this. Sinclair isn't capable of producing a coherent thought in the first place, he doesn't seem to notice the taming process, he's just on tunnel vision speedrunning the concept of human intimacy. Love wins. i think.

i really like the idea of the winners of each season continuing to live (alone) in each world they won in..i know all of them except scar canonically die at the end but just imagine. Grian lives (alone) in the desert. Scott has the Scottage (alone). Pearl stays in her tower (she doesnt even have Tilly). Martyn has the whole Limlife server and roams around scavenging (he cant bring himself to go back to the Mean Gills base after what he did). Scar obviously lives at Trader Scar's and Cleo has a tiny janky world with the little village (at least she has villagers for company, they suppose. It's better than nothing.)

And now Joel lives in his car next to a burnt and crumbling barn, alone.

The weird anger of these Border Patrolmen made me think about descriptions in the report of Argentine police and military officers who became addicted to interrogation, torture, and the murder that followed. When the military and police ran out of political suspects to torture and kill, they resorted to the random abduction of citizens off the streets. I thought how easy it would be for the Border Patrol to shoot us and leave our bodies and car beside the highway, like so many bodies found in these parts and ascribed to drug runners.

(I do think a lot about how rook as a character is the product of two mentors (solas only counts as one even though he used a sockpuppet account lol), and how that interacts with the meaning of what they choose to do at the end. it truly is the cole custody battle round two going on in here. the deliciousness of having rook say'varric taught me well' while pulling such an OBVIOUSLY solas coded move... we love a mixed and murky and hard to define truth. we love from a certain point of view-ing something so emotionally fraught. is it well now he's dead and you killed the part of me that would have saved you with him, the metaphorical mirror of him literally placing the knife that will end him in your hands. is it old run of the mill hypocrisy. is it just the grief enduring, the personal loyalty remaining (as, indeed, solas' did for mythal for a long time). is it 'maybe you should have thought it through a bit more before you decided to reshape me so in your own image (asshole) remember what you did when someone important to you was killed?'. is it the understandable non-gambler's choice considering what's happened literally every other time someone has tried to talk solas down that rook has witnessed and the stakes of this game is: everything, it's time to stop playing around and break out the marked up deck this is not the hour to deal fairly with someone who isn't going to do either. it's genuinely open to interpretation and how triumphant vs. depressing you want to consider it to really be, and I think that's great to have as an option beside the more straightforwardly cathartic redeem or even the ('good'/high readiness version of the) fight ending)
