Ross Dellenger at SI:
For years now, Southeastern Conference football has been synonymous with at least three things: rabid fan bases, championships and CBS television coverage.
Starting in 2024, the call letters identified most with the league are in for a change.
The conference has agreed to a 10-year, multimillion-dollar contract with ESPN and ABC that begins with the 2024 football season, ending what will be a near-two decades run with CBS for a heftier payout and more game flexibility.
Under the package, ESPN and ABC have rights to broadcast the league’s 15 best football matchups as well as eight marquee basketball games. ABC now has rights to the SEC football championship game, which it will air in its traditional late-afternoon slot. And starting next year, the network can broadcast one nonconference football matchup on ESPN+ with each team.
Though terms were not disclosed, ESPN’s annual fee is expected to be in the low $300 million range, according to Sports Business Journal, a considerable and expected increase from the $55 million per year that the conference receives from CBS—a bargain deal that was struck in 1996. CBS pulled out of negotiations this spring after the price tag got too high, SBJ reported.
But beyond the extra change, the SEC benefits from increased flexibility and more of a heads up on kickoff times, two significant factors in negotiations. In fact, more than half of the league’s kickoff times are expected to be assigned a time window (ie: morning/afternoon or late afternoon/evening) before the season even begins, commissioner Greg Sankey told Sports Illustrated this week.
As for flexibility, the league now has the option for its best game each week not to be locked into the 3:30 p.m. ET time slot, as was the case with CBS. While the conference will be assured a weekly 3:30 time slot on ABC, its premier matchups can shift to ABC’s prime-time window, ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro tells SI.
“A key factor contributing to our desire to get this done was scheduling flexibility and the ability to air key conference matchups on ABC or ESPN or both,” Pitaro says.
The SEC’s new deal isn’t without losses. The league loses what has been an exclusive, rewarding partnership with a network that broadcasts very few college football games. CBS and the SEC was a marriage that millions of college football fans grew old watching. Gone will be the familiar faces, like analyst Gary Danielson, and the SEC-themed music and logos.
Already, three years out, Pitaro and his staff are exploring ways to make the SEC’s premier game each week feel different.
“The commissioner and I have spoken about this,” Pitaro says. “That presentation will be distinctive and special. We have all hands on deck right now looking at this.”
They’ve got plenty of time. The SEC–CBS contract runs through the 2023 season. But there is a way for it to end sooner. The league and CBS would have to mutually agree to have ESPN buy out CBS’s final three years. Pitaro says the SEC and ESPN have discussed only 2024 and beyond because the conference is contractually bound to CBS.
Asked about the deal with CBS ending early, Sankey says, “Our focus is on fulfilling our relationship with CBS and looking forward to our future with ESPN and ABC.”
This deal was a long time coming. Sankey says he began exploring a new TV contract in December 2016, about 18 months after he replaced Mike Slive as the league’s commissioner. The two entities, ESPN and the SEC, were finalizing the plan in spring before deciding to delay the announcement on March 9 as the pandemic began.
A priority for the SEC was flexibility and the preselection of kickoff times. For years, SEC administrators and fans quibbled over kickoff-time announcements routinely coming less than two weeks before game dates. While that will remain the case with several matchups, many of them will be assigned in time windows over the summer.
“We had heard from fans and campus leaders, within the changing environment of fan attendance, having some certainty was really important,” Sankey says. “We anticipate during the summer the ability to project out more than half of our kickoff times. Even when we don’t have certainty, we have some window assignments. We narrow the range. We might move from 2:30 p.m. to 11 a.m. [CT] or 2:30 to 6 p.m., but it will stay in that range.”
The new deal will not change the conference’s philosophy on Thursday- or Friday-night games, Sankey says: There will be none. However, the week before the SEC championship, ESPN or ABC will feature an annual late-afternoon, post-Thanksgiving Friday game. The league has not determined what two teams will meet in the yearly affair. Most recently, the borderclash between Arkansas and Missouri has held that spot.
The weekly selection process of SEC games will drastically change. Traditionally, CBS gets the first pick for its 3:30 p.m. ET spot before ESPN decides on the rest of the schedule for its various channels: ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and SEC Network. With just one parent company involved in the selection process, multiple SEC games could be on at the same time, as is the case at times now.
“We could have a 3:30 ABC game and a game on SEC Network at 4 and a game on ESPN at 4,” Sankey says.
If the SEC-ESPN deal is worth the reported $300-plus million a year, SEC schools each stand to make about $20 million more in annual TV revenue checks starting in 2024, eclipsing the Big Ten as the richest conference in terms of annual TV cash.
The SEC on CBS will become extinct in 2024, as ESPN has signed a 10-year deal for exclusive rights to air on ESPN, ABC, SEC Network, and other networks in the ESPN family.

 Terrific 22 Girls Rankings (Pre-Season)
Rank-Team-Region-Surety Rating
1) Fayetteville Manlius (NY) 8.5- FM needs no justification for a first place ranking.  They have more national titles than most teams have district titles.  They return their top 5 from last years national championship squad.
2) Great Oak (CA) 8.5- Last years CA D1 champion and 3rd place NXN team graduated a slew of runners, but their depth is rivaled by none.  GO brought 5 seniors to NXN, yet their returners have averaged 11:07 for 3200 in the spring.  They will be led by Sandra Pflughoft (10:45) and Audrey Dang (10:56). New transfer Tori Gaitan from Yucaipa ran 10:46 this spring and will give GO a huge boost.
3) Buchanan (CA) 8- There were no seniors from the 3rd place finishing squad at the D1 championship last year.  Buchanan is the only team who averaged sub-11 for returners last year and their fifth runner ran 11:04.
4) Jesuit (NW) 8- While not competing at NXN last year after a 6th place finish at NXR NW, Jesuit had shown their prowess beating Sunset at both Borderclash and OR 6A state by 20+ points each time. Jesuit returners averaged 10:12 for 3k this spring including McKenna Schumacher at 9:42.
5) Mountain Vista (SW) 8- Second at state, winner of the SW region and then 13th at NXN was how MV went through XC 2016.  Fun fact, no juniors or seniors competed at state for MV last year.  Their squad averaged 11:12 for 3200 during track.  Low stick Jenna Fitzsimmons ran 10:54 this spring.
6) Chandler (SW) 7.5- After a second place finish at state in AZ, Chandler had an awful day at regionals, finishing 20th. Since then they have gone off on a tear, averaging 11:06 for the 3200. If they can regain their XC legs, they will finish on or near the podium. Their ace, Morgan Foster, ran 10:52 back in March.
7) Naperville North (MW) 8- NN won IL 3A, was runner-up at NXR MW and then finished 10th at NXN.  They are coming off an amazing track season with 3 girls under 11 (only team in the country with 3 sub 11 returners).  The team is led by Sarah Schmitt (10:31), Alex Morris (10:35) and Hannah Ricci (10:46)
8) Centerville (MW) 7.5- Last year Centerville won OH D1 and finished 5th at NXR MW.  Their returners took off in the spring with a 25 second spread and an 11:17 average for 3200.
9) Blacksburg (SE) 7.5- Returning with NXN experience, Blacksburg finished 17th at nationals after winning VA 3A and regionals.  Coming back are two sub 11 runners in Kaitlynn Wolfe and Ailene Edwards and spring 3200 returners averaged 11:19. Blacksburg was also the Hoka Postal Nationals runner-up in 2016.
10) Saratoga Springs (NY) 7- Third place at NY Class A and NY Feds then 5th at regionals, Saratoga just came off a spring where their top 5 returners averaged 10:24 for 3k.  They will have a huge spread like last year (seeing spreads over 2:30) but they will also have a major anchor with Kelsey Chmiel who is coming off a 10:10 2 mile and a national championship at New Balance.
11) Sunset (NW) 7- After finishing runner-up to Jesuit at State and Borderclash, Sunset finished first at NXR NW and 11th at NXN. Sunset returners averaged 10:33 for 3k this spring.
12) Shenendehowa (NY) 7- Looking to make the return trip to Portland after a 14th place finish last year, Shen has a crew of returners running a 10:29 average for 3k.  Last year they also placed runner up at NY Feds and regionals after not qualifying for state.
13) Southlake Carroll (S) 8- Last year was a great season for Carroll, finishing 2nd in TX 6A, first at Nike South and 9th at NXN.  This year their returners averaged 11:26 in the spring, led by Catherine Tracht and her 10:46.
14) Bozeman (NW) 7- After winning MT 2A and NXR NW, Bozeman finished 8th at NXN.  They look to be in good position to return as well, running an average of 11:22 for their top 5 next year.  They will be led by Camila Noe who ran 10:26.
15) Davis (CA) 7- Led by state champion Fionna O’Keefe, Davis was runner up in California D1 last year to Great Oak.  Although the team did graduate a couple key cogs, they should return enough talent and experience from last years NXN runner-up squad to get back to Portland.
16) Broomfield (SW) 7- Broomfield went from winning state to needing a wildcard bid to get into NXN last year after getting third at NXR Southwest. Mountain Vista got their revenge from state at regionals but Broomfield ended up finishing 7th at NXN after being projected to finish near the back.  They will struggle with a wider spread this year which may actually keep them from going to NXN with how tough the SW region is, but their 11:36 average from last spring may show enough fitness to get back to the big dance.
17) Edina (H) 8- First at MN State ahead of Willmar (NXN #5 in 2016) and NXR Heartland and then 12th at NXN, Edina is bringing a strong team back in 2017.  They return a group of 5 averaging 11:25.
18) Minnetonka (H) 7.5- Returners averaged 11:32 led by Sophie Whicher in 10:49.  Minnetonka was third last year at state behind NXN qualifiers Willmar and Edina and was fourth at NXR Heartland behind the same teams and Wayzata.
19) Marcus (S) 6.5- Marcus will lack the depth of most other teams on this list, but they are buoyed by low stick Quinn Owen who ran 4:47/10:25 this past spring.  Their top 5 average for 3200 was 11:29 in 2017.  Marcus finished 4th in TX 6A last year as well as Nike South.
20) Cardinal Gibbons (SE) 7.5- State champions in NC 4A and third place finisher at NXR SE last year, CG should make some noise if they can find a solid 5th runner, but they have at least 4 runners who ran great times in the spring including two runners at 11:00 and 11:03. Gibbons won the Hoka Postal Nationals in 2016.
21) Colts Neck (NE) 7- While only placing 11th at Nike New England last year, CN showed their ability by winning Group 3 at the NJSIAA Championships.  Since then, the top 5 returners averaged 11:32 in the spring, giving them a good springboard for some great team finishes this fall.
22) Champlain Valley (NE) 7- Top 5 returners averaged around 11 flat in the spring for the 3000.  Last year CV won Vermont Division 1, New Englands, and placed third at Nike New England.
