“In a town with nothing, in the middle of a daily life with seemingly no signs of change, high schooler Reiji Kurose was "just" living. Family, dreams for the future, childhood friends. All of them were binding him down to that city. He thought he would "just" keep on living like that. Until he met her. Is there hope in living? Is there light waiting ahead? It's the start of a boy meets girl series which reflects the "now".”
(resume from AniList)
Story: 8/10
Pfiou that was something. I haven’t read a manga with so many chapters in a while so I think I’ll have a lot to say on this one. First of all, I feel like the summary of the story does not explain the entire plot and that it is misleading in a way. I was expecting a story about a boy who has met his all-time favorite idol, but it turns out that this idol is not all bright and pretty and, basically, just that. However, it turned out that Nagi Aoe, the idol, was not even a recurrent character in the story. She’s important for the plot, yes, but she doesn't show up much and other characters easily take center stage in the manga. I was also very disappointed in the first 20 chapters and I almost dropped the manga because minispoiler alert: in 20 chapters the MC fucked/kissed all the female character introduced at least once. I really thought it was some kind of fanservice and I was dealing with some kind of silly harem manga hidden under the cover of a "deeply depressing manga". But the scenes were meaningful to the story, I suppose. It also stops far later in the story and there are fewer scenes like that. Even though there was some things I didn't really appreciate in the story, I think every struggle and sensitive issues were well presented. I wouldn’t say that it was well developed thought.
Art: 9/10
Lovely. Very lovely. Everything looked great. Especially the colour pages and the volume covers. I love the color palette chosen by the artist.

The only thing missing from a 10/10 is that sometimes some panels were full of bubble talk. Like FULL of them. And I know it was probably to accentuate the craziness of the character, but I'm not going to lie I just skipped those pages...

Cast: 6/10
Come to think of it, the main character wasn't so interesting. His character could be resumed to a boy getting sexually and mentally abused by every woman around him. The female characters of this manga were either very annoying or non-existent to the story. I hated every pages with Chako in it (fuck her I swear), and the mother, Yuko, scared me. I have the impression that the teacher was the only well-written character. While what she did to Reiji was very wrong, the entire relationship was very well depicted as toxic. It shows that no matter the context, the student is always the victim in a teacher-student relationship. Because the teacher is older and have more power over the student so they can manipulate them very easily.
Enjoyment: 6/10
I had planned to give an 8/10 to this manga because I enjoyed my reading session. But I just had a nap and the whole thing was repeating itself in my head while I was sleeping. On top of the fact that I'm really sick today, I blame this manga for the atrocious headache I'm having right now. It doesn't make sense and the manga isn't to blame for my disease, but I don't care, I need somebody to blame hehe.
Overall: 7/10

I mayhaps dropped it ( ˙-˙ ) cause my mental health said nope and smacked me in the head (-_-;) the story didn’t have the vibe I thought it was going to have instead it just turned darker in a way like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel, which is what you would expect with the literal tragedy tag stuck on there (╹◡╹)
Tw: SPOILERS! Themes of suicide, emotional abuse, statutory grape, pedophilia i think, forbidden relationships
Note: This is more like my not so live commentary but yeah.. you could take it as my review of each chapter? But I don’t specify which chapter what’s happening and all that it’s just what I feel as i go along.
Manga: Shounen Abyss/ Boy’s Abyss
It has been what 7 chapters and I’m already fucking sighing
Wow I wish I had that much enthusiasm when it comes to death
Throw a middle finger while you’re at it bro you gon die anyways
I don’t have a reason to die, I don’t have the reason to live. That’s deeply moving for some reason.
Bro said the last thing I wanna see is tiddies… and let me suckle them while I’m at it. What a great way to go! I would also love some tits in my face right before I die. If I’m gonna die atleast let me die turned on
Bro let him die in peace wtf-
Idk why but I feel this overwhelming feeling of apathy from the characters. Like of course the teacher saving kurose is obviously not being apathetic yet it feels like she saved him because of her own agenda. Like the more you get the feel the environment from the story you feel this sense of pity but also you also feel the need to dislike them deep down. Maybe it’s because of their hidden reasons behind their kind or gross actions. There isn’t anything genuine about the character so you feel a pit in your stomach.
I relate to kurose tbh but also I don’t
I like the teacher but I feel like she’s going to abandon him— anddddd I take it back
So I think the teacher has some kind of savior complex but it’s a wrong diagnosis. But it feels like something sinister but like I can’t describe it well rn.
Idk I feel like she wants to be a “great” teacher
Oh my god wtf why’d she just do THAT??? Like you know you having arguing and then boom!! You kiss the guy???
Wtf is happening??????
This is like oh my god levels of you fucked up.
I get the teacher but like damn bro she’s like the wanna be dead poet society teacher. Like she idealizes the teaching in a very unrealistic way and like that she wants to help but ig “save” her student.
It’s like weirdly cathartic seeing characters who seem like they have it together see their world fall apart as they slowly contemplate death.
And we said fuck it am i right
It’s weird that I’m right. It’s like the feeling of “I know what’s happening and I’m hoping I’m wrong.” But I do enjoy how uncomfortable I feel.
Wow the dad is shit. Am I surprised? No. Not really. You get used to it.
I do enjoy the fact everyone is terrible and everyone is a victim. So you don’t really root for anyone so you’re just seeing how worse a decision a person can make, how worse can they fall into this abyss. See what I did there!
So like I like the Aizawa look alike he looks like my husbando but like he’s giving me the wrong vibes. But he’s hot tho. But he’s giving me the wrong vibes.
The teacher doesn’t love him. Nobody loves him. But yeah it feels like she trying to get the high of helping someone.
Addressing her as his teacher feels like she’s drawing a line. Like this isn’t a relationship I’m superior over you. But I’m also trying to help you. But I’m also trying to use you.
So she’s a pedo.
I think I’m right. You thrive off the control you have over him but under the guise of helping. You know it’s wrong but you’re “helping” him so it’s not wrong.
Note: I would read more but then i felt this gross icky feeling so I stopped like i felt like i needed adult supervision

Lenni Reviews: "Boy’s Abyss" Vol. 4, by Ryō Minenami
(Image Source) *This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review and is recommended for mature readers. Reiji’s friend, Gen, reveals a dark secret involving his mother and Reiji is even more determined to save her. Meanwhile Chako finds out about Reiji’s promise to Nagi and Ms. Shiba does her best to keep a hold on Reiji. I really dislike the teacher. Ms. Shiba needs to leave Reiji…

I remembered Boy’s Abyss when I was taking a shower. Like there’s one character that’s either a horrible representation of a gay man or a horrible representation of a trans woman and I’m not sure which it is. If you’ve suffered through that manga you know who I’m talking about, but I still don’t the know answer to this. The character is still the least horrible person who’s interested in the main character imo which is surprising because the character is both a yandere and also was his bully. That says more on the quality of the love interest in this manga.
