Unit Teambuilding - Event Victor

Neither Variety nor BP, neither PokeFair nor Spotlight.  He’s just Victor.  A free pair that HAS SPECTRIER?  YOU GAVE PRINCESS LUNA TO THE REDDIT FUCKBOI POSTER CHILD, ARE YOU SERIOUS?!

General Overview Victor comes in as the first-ever Field sync type, and can I just say I love that it’s an event?  I feel like we should get a Sprint event pair too.  It’s really nice to have access to these new types in a sort of trial run.  I wrote my thoughts on the Field sync and what could be good about it here, if anyone’s interested in a longer explanation.  The short version is, Field sync has 250-300BP, and is designed to set the stated field effect just before first sync, and applies an extension effect to it.  Despite calls of “Nerfed Tech,” Field is more analogous to support.  Your goal is to take first sync with the intent of significantly buffing the next sync nuke.  While an EX Support gives a permanent 2x bonus to all damage, Field gives a temporary 2.25x bonus to all damage of the specified type.  It’s an increase in damage, but with conditions.

Victor’s focus is on Ghost Zone, a skill previously owned by Renegade Cynthia, and barely worth mentioning out of SC Lillie.  As a type, Ghost is...honestly doing really well for itself.  A lot of its commons are pretty damned strong, so this isn’t really a type I would’ve picked for such a buff.  Oh well.

As a damage dealer, Victor is middling.  His DPS is notably weaker than almost anyone in the type, and his sync is around Morty’s.  His main saving grace is a Max Move, which adds a nice burst of damage while under Zone.  His other angle is the supportive effects.  Victor has Haze, which is an invaluable tool for the currently running Latias Gauntlet stage, and is hilarious with the Five Stats +3 condition in CS, immediately removing all buffs from the opponent.  Otherwise, it’s fairly middling.  His trainer move is a single-target skill that applies +2 sp atk/+1 crit, which means he is a successful Sp Atk/Crit buffer, to max, for a specified target, even if it’s not himself.  This allows him some versatility, partnering with a wider array of potential supports.

That said, what Field sync most wants is high DPS partners to abuse the duration of Zone.  A strong, single-target sync nuke like Techs aren’t really getting much done with only one application of Zone.  This is an effect designed for 3v3, with the intent being that Strikers will be his optimal partners.  Victor will potentially contribute, if boosted.  If not, he mostly exists to set up someone else’s damage, which harkens back to the Dual Support days.  It’s not a great look.  I think Victor’s overall performance will be okay, but nothing exceptional.  He is a free pair, and those have to come with significant weaknesses.  But it’s not an unwelcome addition.  I mean, it is for me, but we all know why I’m salty.

EX and Move Level? As an event, Victor is being given extra copies to exchange for tickets, and the powerups are given out as dailies until anniversary proper.  But, you may notice, Victor does not get spirits.  Instead, the spirits seem to be from the rally.  They expect me to use my own.  Wrong answer, DeNA.  Victor’s been largely cited as pretty middling, even by the redditbros, and if you think I’m wasting my valuable spirits on a guy I don’t even want you are sorely mistaken.  But the sad thing is, without them?  Victor loses the only thing holding him together.  Neither sync nor DPS is impressive, and he’s fairly reliant on that Max Move to supplement the damage.  He needs that field application, or he’s just not contributing much beyond being a Haze bot.  And Brycen is a Haze bot.  Brycen can do his job.  Brycen can do his job better thanks to the 30% freeze rate off Ice Beam applying some stall tactics.  If you don’t EX Victor, there’s not much reason to use him.  Shauntal does better damage, and Brycen handles his one supportive niche better.

Team 1: Victrier, Anni Lillie/Fantina, Marley/SS Brendan Regardless of how the Field Sync works, the goal is to pivot to a Striker that clears while the effect is up.  Anni Lillie is the perfect partner, given that her DPS is absurd, and while her sync is relatively poor, the SEUN effect pushes it way up on-type.  Fantina is a notable alternative, because she benefits so significantly from Victor’s trainer move.  If going with Lillie, Marley is a good pick for the speed to manage gauge.  If going with Fantina, you want to debuff special defense, and SS Brendan is the best support for that role.

Team 2: Victrier, Agatha, Lodge Morty A more F2P aligned solution.  Lodge Morty supplements Victor’s buffs well, and this team has the benefit of Sleep locking with Agatha.  Victor’s sync is actually better than Agatha, if you can believe it, but running her sync can allow her to mega evolve for a good supplemental DPS option if you want.  Victor is able to buff Agatha as well, so either pick works.  The goal is really just lockdown disruption from Hypnosis while Morty buffs evasion, and Victor deals damage.

Team 3: Victrier, NY!Dawn, Luican/Agatha A nice thing about Victor is that he can supply buffs, and New Years Dawn doubles said buffs.  The bad thing about Victor is that he’s good because of a field effect, so a team like this is very risky due to the CS modifiers.  Fortunately, Haze means re-allocation can go to Five Stats +3 that he removes, so Dawn can serve as both damage and tank, thanks to her evasion.  Lucian was chosen for debuffing special defense and maintaining speed for the team, but you could also just...run Agatha.  Again.  Sleep chaining is good, and her gauge management is just fine.

Team 4: Victrier, Grimsley/SS Korrina, Lodge Blue/Lodge Elesa Victrier has one other tool in his arsenal: Haze.  While usually not so good, this is a nice tool to help set up, say, Grimsley, who desperately needs the help.  Grimsley will use his trainer move twice, but likely needs attack, since Victor will be taking over Haze duty.  Enter Lodge Blue, who can buff attack, and critically, flinch.  A bit of stall strats added in will be fine.  It’s also important to note that, while off-type, Victrier doesn’t need the field effect.  You can just turn it off and make Blue a better tank.  On the higher end, there’s also SS Korrina, but personally I don’t think she really needs Victor for anything other than Zone, so like...she’s there if you want her to be, I guess.

Team 5: Victrier, MU Torchic/Lodge Dawn, Lucian If you’re on that F2P budget, and you really want Victrier to be your Ghost-type damage, this is the comp.  MU Torchic complements Victor’s buffing to the point her only needs to use it once, while Lodge Dawn means he needs to use it twice but has EX Support benefits if desired.  Lucian is the debuffing machine to work with MU Torchic in particular for speed, though he doesn’t contribute as much with Lodge Dawn.  There, the combo is more about mixed debuffing of offenses for the purposes of survival.

Final Thoughts Victrier has some promise as a free pair.  I don’t think he’s great, but he can function competently, if you’re willing to put in the spirits.  The utility he has is fairly limited, as you’d expect of a free pair, but it’s not strictly bad or unusable.  I just wish he had a little more.  With how many commons get On a Roll 2 with Shadow Ball, was that really too much to ask for?  But the full impact won’t be known until we see the Field sync in action.  Regardless of how it operates, there’s promise.  It’s just...is it ever better than a manual application Tech?  That’s what we don’t know for sure.  And a free pair shouldn’t be used as the basis for the entire sync type when it’s the only one.  We’ll see what happens moving forward.  But hey, free Ghost Zone.  Zones can be easily accessible now.  More of that, please.

X cierto..tras dejar a la RUSA me encontré al volver al RINCON DE LA VICTORIA O MALAGA a un tipo delante mío en el SEMAFORO con camiseta del 23 JORDAN [con casco ZEUS] y me fotografié con él 23 del MALAGA CF y su localidad "BENAHAVIS" [y su nombre en CHINO] en un ESCAPARA_TE y cuando recogí a la RUSA en la GASOLINERA el de adelante con un JEEP "RENEGADE" con matrícula KYLie..cargaba BOMBONA D BUTANO frente al LAVADO A PRESION

Only three runs for today because I’m super tired from work. Here are the teams that I used. I might try racking up win streaks again tomorrow since it’s weekend. From left to right are my Moltres team, Latias team, and Uxie team respectively.

Moltres: I didn’t bother changing the team name because, that’s what happened. Ingo and Emmet finally reunited, and to celebrate, they went to kill a legendary fire bird. Or at least Emmet did, but Ingo is so resilient under Sandstorm. Ingo is also not fully gridded yet, but he just refused to die. Emmet just murdered the hell out of Moltres, even at 1/5 0/20. Felt so satisfying. I really like how strong Emmet is even with minimum investment, really shows how amazing he is. Now I just need Subway brothers’ theme to be available at jukebox and I can play their theme song as they kicked Moltres’ ass.

Latias: Since Latias is weak to debuffs, why not bring a team that excelled and abused the hell out of debuffs? Yeah, everything went pretty much as expected. Anni N nuked Latias’ entire health bar by himself, and all that good stuff. Piercing Gaze also let him bypassed Latias’ evasion boosts.

Uxie: Okay, I spent way too much time on this, and my energy was also spent on this way too much. So, my first team was actually not this, it was BP Morty/Allister/SS Renegade Cynthia. Back then, when Uxie’s Legendary Arena was still going, I had BP Morty freshly scouted at 3/5 4*, and Allister 2/5 with wrong build (Poison dps instead of Ghost type nuker), and SS Renegade Cynthia, and I reached around 40%-ish health of Uxie’s third bar. Now that Allister is 5/5 and BP Morty is 5* with variety of builds, I went in thinking I could defeat Uxie. 

I still couldn't. I was always very close. In every single of my attempts, Uxie only had around 10% health or less left and the team kept failing.

I kept resetting, thinking it was my wrong timing to apply status changes and status conditions. I even changed Morty's grids from Aggravation to Master Healer. 

Still couldn't. 

Until then I realized the major issue that held the team back: Gauges. I just realized that both BP Morty and Allister are...slow. Even though I gridded Allister with MGRs, that still didn’t help. This is kinda sad especially when Mismagius and Gengar are supposed to be fragile speedsters in the original game. SS Renegade Cynthia's speed is okay, but not great, so she didn't save the team from gauge issues.I tried to modify Morty's grid for MGRs, and even then it still didn't help much. 

So, my first Uxie team failed. I wasn't thinking straight and I already felt very tired from the countless resets, so I brought my Piercing Blows team earlier than it’s supposed to.  At first, I brought Sonia, before realizing midway she's still 1/5 thus no access to Critical Squad, so I changed her to Falkner, who was too squishy. Kiawe is also not fully gridded yet, so I went to Hop.

This team could clear it, of course, but for whatever reason N crit-ed on everything EXCEPT his sync nuke. Out of five sync nukes, he only crit-ed once. Even at +3 crit from Hop. N, I love you but, come on... you went to 5/5+1 from the charming Pokefair Banner even after I spent candies on you to 3/5 (one of which I should have saved for SS Serena had I know he would arrive that much) and you decided to miss your crits 90% of the time??

All in all, this was something else. I will try to rack up more streaks tomorrow, but I decide to take my time on this.

I was trying to tank with Swimsuit Misty, but for some reason I wasn't getting the MPR on Duck and Cover! so I kept dying at the sync. I decided to tank with Rachel (since SS Elesa is weak to dark) and use snarl to reduce special damage and it made the stage so much easier. Lusamine came in clutch with the endure that she applies at the beginning of the battle and was able to survive a critical hit dark pulse and kill the Umbreon with Bug Buzz.

Final round: Lance

I was was having fun flinch queuing this team thanks to Aggrevation 1 on Luxray until the stupid Lapras applied X Resist. We all can't win I suppose. Funny thing is Lance used Now or Never! after we both synced and I thought for sure he was going to take himself out like since he had a sliver of HP left but nope he survived. I hate Steadfast 9 sometimes.

Renegade Platinum is HARD ya’ll. It’s fun though!! I still can’t believe I managed to beat the elite 4 with this team, we were hella underlevelled.

This is the squad after facing down Cynthia. I’m not kidding when I said under-levelled, Cynthia’s mons are level 77/78!! It was one hell of a match to try and slog through, but we managed it!

Sin took two +2 Earthquakes from Garchomp, and managed to secure the 2HKO. Also managed to stall vs Cynthia’s Milotic, by virtue of being incredibly tanky. MVP of that champion battle for sure. Absolute unit, incredibly tanky, 10/10, everything I ever wanted from a Milotic. (Special shout out to Marvel Scale, for making Hypnosis into an upside.) Stevo was a disappointment, and only made it this far because I really wanted to try use Torterra, because it’s the only starter I hadn’t used up until this point. He continuously disappointed. Betsy was a beast through some of the Elite 4, but unfortunately didn’t do much vs Cynthia. Still, spamming banded Rock Slide vs Flint was incredibly helpful!! Aurora was a MONSTER throughout this entire run, and even against Cynthia, she survived hits she had no right living through. Being able to throw off 140 BP Facades at +2, and 150BP Earthquakes helped one hell of a lot. Absolute MVP of the entire run. Lucy didn’t do too much vs Cynthia, but she did manage to 2HKO Spiritomb with a specs Shadow Ball, which saved us a huge headache!! Veritas calm minded against the psychic Elite 4 member, and felt kinda like cheating there, but against Cynthia? Not so much. The multiple options she had for dealing with dragons made it very hard for Veritas to do much. Still, the huge HP stat, paired with general bulk and some very strong stopping power did put a dent in Lucario, who none of the rest of the team could handle, thanks to it’s Ice Punch being such a threat. Of course, the real MVP was the like 40+ Hyper Potions I used during the battle, thanks to Sin being able to stall so well. Don’t look at me like that I had no choice.

Someone on Reddit did a very interesting poll, involving EX options that people have used.  It looks at grand total number promoted, as well as percentage of how many people own the sync pair as metrics across different rarities, and it’s exactly the kind of nonsense I like to see.

Spotlight Scouts (by grand total)

Sonia. Apparently she is #1 most promoted in the entire game, even.  People fucking love Sonia.

May.  Guessing this is historical, since she’s good but there’s now better.

Leaf.  Gotta be historical.

Hilbert.  How is he not like #2 given his kit?

Brendan.  Gotta be a Reddit-ism.

Aaron.  Nice.

SS Elesa.  Tracks, she’s popular and was really good.

Dawn.  Unexpected but nice.

Bea.  Fighting types are hard to come by, and she was better than Wally for a long time.

Hau.  I will say this: they discounted people who promoted Skyla via the event to make it more fair for percentages.  But here it’s just absolute number.  Hau outranks someone handed out for free, and the best common in Roxanne.  Apparently, Electric-Weak Aaron scared enough people so bad that everyone promoted Hau.  I am in awe.

Roxanne.  Predictable, she’s obscenely good.

Skyla.  Free at one point.

Barry.  Historical artifact, he was once fantastic.

Candice.  First of the common grids, really good Ice EX that outperformed Winter Nessa and Ghetsis both, it tracks given Ice’s history.

Drake.  Sure?  I’m kinda stunned he’s above BP Morty given that Morty is just better in literally every way.

BP Morty.  Really good defensive support.

Korrina.  Historical artifact.

BP Candice.  How?  Legitimately, how?  She sucked ass until Irida dropped, why did so many people promote her?  Is this just an indication of how few promote these pairs?

Siebold.  Neo Barry, in a way.  Really good at time of EX release, still really good, I think people just jumped on it as a free solution.

SS Blue.  Absolutely historical, but also even now advice on the free pick from Victory Road is “take Blue.”

SS Morty.  Eat shit, Red.  SS Morty’s stupid good and everyone knows it.

SS Diantha.  Really?  I didn’t think all that many people pulled for her.  I guess she ran for a while, so it makes sense.

NC Marnie.  WHAT?!  Why?!  Marnie’s not really worth EXing, guys.  All her DPS is AoE, she blows apart sides fine and only gets AoE on sync, what is the actual point?  I know, favoritism stuff, but this is so hysterically unnecessary.

Renegade Cynthia.  Tracks, she was highly anticipated with how long people waited between Cynthia alts, and was exactly what players wanted to see.

Irida.  I love that Irida’s on here.  She is that good, people are right to do this.  The EX in particular is what makes her so good off-type with Ice allies.  AoE DPS handles sides fine, but you want that pop damage.

NC Calem.  I’m a little surprised he beat out some of the others.  Good for him I guess?

SST Red.  Stunned he’s only #5, I thought everyone got him.

Anni Lillie.  Nice, girl.

SS Serena.  Unsurprising given the impact she had.

SS Lusamine.  Similar to Serena, though also unnecessary like Marnie in a way.

NC Serena.  I expected more people to have EX’d her.  But okay.

NC Bede.  That tracks.  Best support in the game.

Spring Burgh.  Listen.  We have to remember that once, long ago, Spring Burgh was considered the best support in the game, because he had crit rate, a ton of bulk, and Potion support.  It was a different time back then, and everyone pulled for him, in the same way like everyone pulled for NC Bede, you know?  It’s not their fault.

SC Jasmine.  Absolutely fantastic, both Jasmine alts are here.

SC Emmet.  Bug damage is painful, it does not surprise me people went for it.

Halloween Iris.  Poison was also rough, or course people wanted the Zone.  I’m surprised most people EX her though.

Other Limited (Variety, Lodge from limited base, events, by grand total)

Swimsuit Misty.  For F2P, having a bulky support with evasion and Synchro Healing 1 is really good, I’m not too surprised.

Classic Giovanni.  Okay, now it’s just Kanto Bias, right?

Ball Guy.  Memes are bad, actually.

Bugsy/Scyther.  Sure?  This one was fairly good.

Lodge Cynthia.  That’s character favoritism, she’s not that good.

Blarcanine.  Why?  He’s not even that good.  We have expanded Silver now, why?

Lodge Steven.  Okay this one tracks, he’s really good as a special Rock sync nuke.

Lodge Adaman.  Wait.  Adaman’s lodge form sucks though.  And his base form didn’t make top ten in Master Fairs.  This one’s weird.

Variety Lorelei.  You know.  I hate the Variety thing, but I’m glad my girl made top 10.

Variety Lance.  Sure, this tracks.  He’s a legitimately good damage dealer, I know some people went for it.

NC Calem.  Woah, okay, back it up.  I don’t think Calem’s that good to begin with.  Not until SC Zinnia saved him.  The only reason I can think of for him being the most EX’d by percentage is that he’s statistically very frail for a support, and people outright needed the stats.  Otherwise this one’s just bizarre.

Aura Cynthia.  Did not make Top 10 by total, but did make #2 by percentage.  That implies not that many people went for her.  I guess...SST Red was the bigger focus.  Ash didn’t make any list (eat shit, loser), but Cynthia has less in total than Red but far more by percent.  Interesting.  Moreover, Red didn’t make the list.  Meaning...everyone got him, a lot of people EX’d him, but not that many.  He was so good many didn’t bother.  That...sadly tracks.

SS Kris.  That’s my girl.  Didn’t make Top 10 overall, but seeing her here is a comfort.

SS Serena.  Sure.

NC Bede.  Unsurprising.

NC Serena.  Love that Bede got more by percentage.

Impressions Okay, this is really, really interesting data, mostly for insight about Variety Scouts.  Despite several making top tens for grand total and percentage...the implication given that many are the bottom as far as never being promoted implies that it’s because no one pulled.  This is a very positive outcome for Variety scouts in general, indicating that at least in this segment of the player base?  They’re actually not pulling.  The value isn’t there at all.

It also implies that no one cares about Lodge and BP units.  While many didn’t make the list, this is also because there’s a lot of each, and they can’t all be here.  The obvious ones, like BP Erika and Lodge N, who exist for status, are all topping the chart.  But even relatively good ones like Lodge Steven and Lodge Gloria are on the bottom.  I think it speaks to how much people really dislike the lack of something new for getting EX.  I mean, that and not wanting to waste gems on Variety scouts, and perhaps not waste resources on Lodge units that aren’t that good.  I do find it interesting that Lodge Dawn, Lodge Lillie, and Lodge Morty, who I consider the best lodge units by far, didn’t make any list in either direction.  Very middle of the road, it seems.

Another thing that is very interesting to me is that, at the top of almost all of these lists, barring the commons and Master Fairs...is support.  The good supports tend to be the most frequently boosted pairs.  Despite all the grousing about how every support isn’t good enough, they’re the most consistently boosted.  Except the Master Fairs, which still play by offense rules, until you look at percentage and NC Calem suddenly rockets to the top.  Even with the commons, which didn’t have a support at the top, it was because Hau was a nigh-requirement for many players to handle Electric-weak Aaron at the time.  Which is, I think, the single funniest outcome thus far.

Aura Cynthia being second place in percentage, SST Red in fifth place overall, and Ash not appearing on the list, is a very interesting breakdown of statistics, and my favorite minute tidbit on the lists.  SST Red was pulled so often that he’s an overall top performer, but didn’t make percentage because he’s so fucking stupid as a sync pair that a bunch of people didn’t bother wasting resources on someone who’d get the job done anyway.  Aura Cynthia wasn’t pulled enough to make overall numbers, but nearly everyone who pulled her must have upgraded her.  Ash was apparently the last winner of the third anniversary, which is a comfort exclusively to me who doesn’t like him.
