So @pacific-coast-hockey and I attended the live auction for the Cuda's ugly sweaters last night and man, it was extremely entertaining and well worth the price of admission (free). He got photos, and I think he's going to add them here, but I kept track of which jerseys went for what, and a few random notes. So here's my half!
IN ORDER:
Radim Šimek - $1400 - I've very rarely seen Simmer look that pleased by anything, and it was a genuine treat to see him smiling over the very active bidding war for his jersey
Tanner Kaspick - $750
Cole Cassels - $900
Leon Gawanke - $925 - his jersey went to someone holding up a Go Gawanke sign, which was very cute
Scott Sabourin - $1550 - I think there was some recency bias at play with the bidding here, given his fight and jazz hands on Friday night. He was not smiling the way the other guys were & Kasper and I were joking that he wanted to go HOME
Nathan Todd - $950 - that man has a very shiny bald head
Shakir Mukhamadullin - $1200 - he looked very adorably pleased by the bidding war and this total
Ozzy Wiesblatt - $1075
Magnus Chrona - $1050 - His jersey went to someone wearing his University of Denver hoodie and he looked extremely happy about it
Ethan Cardwell - $1000 - Guys, I cannot tell you how adorable Cardsy and every single thing he does are. Holding up his jersey to be auctioned was no exception
Brandon Coe - $850
Nikolai Knyzhov - $1050 - I have no notes here but please know I love Knyzy and would die for him
Daniil Gushchin - $950 - I'm genuinely surprised this didn't go higher? Also, as I type this he's not listed on the roster on the Cuda's website, but that doesn't mean anything. I hope. 😬
Bradley Marek - $850
Bradley Kemp - $900 - he looked quietly pleased at this and I'm more than a little shocked that his jersey went for more than Coe's
Valtteri Pulli - $850
Eetu Mäkiniemi - $900 - how on Earth did his jersey not go for more? It's an enteral mystery
Bordy - $1900 - he did this very cute thing where he gestured to go on, go on when it looked like this bidding was stalling at around, like, $1200. It went to the female half of the eternally drunk Michigan fan duo, who was absolutely not going to be outbid by anyone, not even God himself
Kyle Rau - $750 - I felt bad for him following Bordy, but honestly, $750 isn't bad considering that he uhhhhh signed with the Cuda, like, two days ago or whatever
Artem Guryev Arty Party - $950
With the (I think) $650 that Frenzy's jersey went for, the Cuda raised an awesome $21,400 for Working Partnerships USA, along with whatever they got for chuck-a-puck and 3.147 stuffed animals (our group contributed, like, 12 of those, go team us!)
Winners of the Peggy Ramsay/Film4 playwriting bursary awards announced
Six winners were unveiled today
Alex Wood | 22 November 2023
The six winning writers of the Peggy Ramsay/Film4 Awards have been announced.
Providing six writing bursaries of £10,000 for new theatre writers, the initiative has been created by Film4 and the Peggy Ramsay Foundation alongside the Maria Bjornson Memorial Fund.
Four of the six bursaries are supported through the Peggy Ramsay Foundation (with one dedicated to literary agent Tom Erhardt), while two are supported by Film4.
The bursary recipients will now be attached to a specific venue or organisation for a year in order to develop at least one full-length play, while also working alongside industry professionals.
Former National Theatre artistic director Richard Eyre, who chaired the panel deciding the six winners, said today: “I’ve always thought that giving bursaries to writers for them to be attached for a year to theatres is an inventive act of philanthropy. I’ve been chairing this award since 2009 and I have been repeatedly impressed by the quality of the plays. This year has been no exception. I feel sure that these writers will continue to confirm our faith in their talent.”
The six winners are:
Babirye Bukilwa, the writer of cake, who will be attached to the Soho Theatre and Clean Break,
Shahid Iqbal Khan, writer of 10 Nights, who will be attached to Paines Plough,
Martha Loader, writer of Bindweed, who will be attached to the New Wolsey Theatre,
Marek Horn, writer of Octopolis, who will be attached to the Hampstead Theatre,
Florence Espeut-Nickless, writer of Destiny, who will be attached to Bristol Old Vic, and
Morna Young, writer of Aye, Elvis, who will be attached to the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh.
Ben Coren, head of development at Film4, added: “Discovering and nurturing new talent is one of our core values at Film4, so we’re very happy to help another round of emerging UK playwrights develop their careers. I’m looking forward to seeing what the winners create in 2024 and beyond.”
Alongside Eyre and Coren on the panel are Jack Bradley (Sonia Friedman Productions), Will Mortimer (Bridge Theatre and the Peggy Ramsay Foundation), Dinah Wood (Faber and Faber), Nicholas Wright (playwright) and Georgia Gatti (Neal Street Productions). The scheme is administered by Sue Higginson.

Review: Executive Director at Theatre Charlotte, Ron Law, is Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol By Perry Tannenbaum
In his 15th and final season as executive director at Theatre Charlotte, Ron Law has been doing double Dickens duty in the artistic realm. Back in September, he stage-directed Oliver!to open the 2019-20 season, and now he has stepped into the formidable role of Ebenezer Scrooge…
I made a post a while back where I went back into my old Pokémon Platinum save file and listed all my Pokémon names, and I said I might come up with an updated list as to what I name my favorite Pokémon. Why not start by doing my Top 15. No order, as usual. I'll add the rule that each Pokémon I list, represents that line so if I say "Pikachu", I also mean Pichu and Raichu had that name as well.
Raichu - SunnyD. When I was a kid, my bio dad would take me to his girlfriends house and she bought me this purple Pikachu ball
Pretty sure it's this one. I searched all over the internet for it but this is the only picture I could find, or else I probably would've bought it again. But that was also the first place I ever had Sunny-D so I put two and two together. Also, you know how they'll have MLG Pikachu with glasses, a blunt and Mtn. Dew. Instead of all that, I made one with just glasses and Sunny-D for my profile pic at one point. It stuck.
Charizard - Fury. When GoAnimate was a thing, I made a series called "The Party" where Jak left Daxter home alone to go on a date with Keira so Daxter throws a party and invites Charizard among the guests. I was trying to get him to do a horse whistle and it ended up coming out like "Furrrrreeeeee" so I just named him Fury out of convenience.
Shellder - Ike. One time I went to my friends house to play Halo and we met a kid named Isaac on Xbox Live but he told us to call him Ike. This was kind of in honor of him because he was probably the least toxic kid we talked to on there.
Skarmory - Mercury. A decent amount of these names can go both ways, with this one, if it's a boy, Merc, if it's a girl, Mercury. I feel like this one is pretty simple and doesn't really need an explanation.
Monferno - Lazlo. This one is hard because he's my top favorite ever and I've had various names for him over time and I'm not sure there will ever be a definitive one but this is the current one. I went to either BK or McD's to get one of those Pokémon cards, it happened to be Monferno. I believe in chance. You know what other toy I got from there once? A Lazlo pencil topper, another orange monkey.
Treecko - Grover. Because Grovyle sounds like Grover and I just like the idea of him being a muppet. Before Monferno, I had one of those Wendy's "toys", which is where I started liking him. (Ok, maybe I believe in chance A LOT. But not as much as my dad)
Poliwhirl - Clue. I started Pokémon as a young kid but I fell out of it until I was around 9 because of divorce stuff, Yada Yada, but I still had a few toys. A Pikachu Party VHS, Pokémon Colosseum (which I never learned how to play), PKMN The First Movie VHS (which magically went missing and my mom told me my bio dad lost it and my bio dad told me my mom lost it), a mini Geodude and a mini Poliwhirl (stuff you'd get out of a capsule machine). That has nothing to do with the name, I just wanted to state my connection to him. So, I used to have a bullfrog named "Nion", why? When I looked up Starkiller's name from The Force Unleashed, it said his name was 'Nion', and it is...his son's middle name. Starkiller is a clone of Galen Marek, still with me? CLOne. Clo looked a bit weird so I took that and make it Clue. Whether you want to play with that and say it was because of CLU in Tron or the board game or Blue's Clues since he's blue(-ish) then be my guest if that makes it simpler, welcome to my thought process.
Smeargle - Bradley. I was on a site called "PokeHeroes" where you collect various Pokémon then trade them, breed them or sell them and use the money to buy a rare egg. Well, I asked what to name him on my status and someone said "Bradley". Probably the most normal on this list.
Umbreon - Noctis. I said I had Pokémon Colosseum so this should come as no surprise. But yeah, I name all the Eevees different FFXV refs. (I do like shiny Umbry more though) also Noctis' dog is named Umbra so...
Totodile - LaCroc. (Or LaCroix). One of the funny things my dad says is "I'm gonna shove a croc up your ass." when he's peeved, so I guess I made good on that threat. It sounds better in French. "I'm finna shove a la Croc up your de cul." Not an official translation mind you.
Togepi - StarChild. It's kind of just been a staple for me because that's what I named him/her as a kid and is one of the only names I kept consistent just for the sheer novelty of it.
Electivire - Trench. I gotta be honest...I've only ever got an Electivire through Showdown, mods and Action Replay for the simple reason that I'm a loner therefore don't trade Pokémon, which unfortunately is required for this one. But if I ever did get him, I'd name him Trench after the TOP album. (colors man, colors) but otherwise I used to name Elekid Duracell.
Turtwig - Guacamole. What need I say, colors. But even if Monferno is on here, that doesn't mean that I didn't pick Turtwig first. He was my first after I got back into Pokémon so I didn't even know what any of the second or third forms looked like yet, I basically went into Diamond blind. So I don't think I even realized you could name them yet. I also thought of Turtilla which could be short for Tortilla, Gozilla, Turt-Killa.
Ivysaur - Sierra. Because when she sprays her sleep powder and stuff, it's like a mist. Sierra Mist. And I like that name in general.
Blastoise - Sucker. Slang for lollipop. I couldn't not have the other Kanto starter on here. When I was a kid, I had this fantasy of Blastpiss, I mean Blastoise, shooting piss, I mean lollipops out of his cannons. Maybe I was sucking on a lollipop when I watched the first movie, I don't know but whenever I saw him, I'd think "Sucker!"
Just know that this was a tough list to make. There are so many Pokémon and so many more that I wanted to put on here. But yeah, I think in the end, these are my favorites., for now anyways...

HARTFORD, CT - Activity is picking up for every professional hockey franchise around the globe, including the Hartford Wolf Pack, preparing for the upcoming 2022-23 season.
HARTFORD YARD GOATS WHALERS TRIBUTE
The Yard Goats hope to add more names for their annual Hartford Whalers appreciation day next year.
Dave Keon sent a thoughtful, heartfelt video message from his home in Florida to his former teammates and fans.
Ron Francis and Ulf Samuelsson couldn’t attend this season because Francis’s daughter is getting married.
Nick Fotiu, who has a heavy Connecticut connection, could not attend because his grandson graduated from the NYC police academy. Fotiu played for the New England and Hartford Whalers and the New York Rangers in his playing days. He also played three separate times, coaching in New Haven, and was an assistant for the Wolf Pack. He hopes to attend next year.
The Staten Island-born Fotiu lives in Cape Cod.
Mark Howe, who retired as the Head of Scouting, may join his brother, Marty, a resident, who has attended every year.
Sean Burke was set to attend; however, now he's in a scouting role after leaving the Montreal Canadiens for the Las Vegas Golden Knights, where he joins his old Whaler teammate, Jim McKenzie.
THE AHL SCHEDULE RELEASED
The AHL teams have agreed to a unified 72-game AHL season. That schedule was unveiled last week.
Highlighting some key dates in the schedule, it starts with Hartford opening the '22-'23 campaign on the road with a two-game set against the Charlotte Checkers on October 14 and 15.
The teams' home opener comes a week later when the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins come to the XL Center.
Hartford takes on Bridgeport the day after Thanksgiving and will play host to the Springfield Thunderbirds on New Year’s Eve at 5:30.
The schedule features three Central Division teams that Pack fans have not seen in Hart City in quite some time. They are the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Rockford IceHogs, and the Milwaukee Admirals.
The Pack plays Rockford on December 2nd for the first time. Milwaukee arrives on December 9th and makes its first appearance since February 14th, 2003. They now play in the new Panther Arena, as the Bradley Center is gone. Grand Rapids travels in the next night. They haven’t seen the XL Center since January 2nd, 2009.
The Laval Rocket and Belleville Senators have been dropped from their schedule.
GETTINGER RESIGNED
Tim Gettinger received a new one-year, two-way deal from the Rangers, paying him $750K in the NHL and $125K in the AHL.
Kasperi Kapanen, the son of former Whaler Sami Kapanen, signs a two-year extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins for $3.2M per season.
The Wolf Pack's spare goalie for the past two years, François Brassard, heads to the Providence Bruins, signing a two-way (AHL-ECHL) deal. Instead, he will likely end up playing in Maine for the Mariners.
Connor Bleackley joins Brassard in Maine. He was a Pack Player for the last game before the pandemic hit three years ago.
LOTS OF MOVING AROUND
Former New Haven Nighthawk Sylvain Couturier is hired as the new GM by the Cape Breton Eagles (QMJHL). He leaves the Acadie-Bathurst Titan from the other side of the province.
A former New Haven Senator has left Cape Breton as head coach for the University of Waterloo (OUAA) next season.
Former UCONN player Ben Freeman signs with the Greenville (NC) Swamp Rabbits.
Defenseman Zack Malik split last season in the Czech Republic (Czechia) Division-2. His father, Marek Malik, is a former Whaler, Springfield Indian, Ranger, and Beast New Haven defenseman. Marek was an assistant coach with HC Frydek-Mistek and HK Dukla Jihlava and heads to FPS (Finland Mestis Divison-2).
COLLEGE TRANSFERS
Nick Bochen of Quinnipiac University (ECACHL) transfers to Bentley University (AHA), making 89 known transfers and 95 grad transfers for 184 thus far.
Over 100 players remain in the transfer portal.
51 AHL’ers have signed overseas. Russia, with eleven, leads the way. Sweden has eight. Germany has seven signees, while Switzerland and Finland each have six.
25 of 31 teams have lost at least one player.
Ex-Pack, John Gilmour leaves CSKA Moscow (Russia-KHL) for Dynamo Minsk (Belarus-KHL).
The WJC camp resumes the postponed December tournament next month in Edmonton. It features Ranger draftees Will Cullye and Brennan Othmann plus Chase Stillman, the grandson of former Nighthawk and Springfield Indian Bud Stefanski.
One of the camp coaches is ex-Springfield Indian Brad Lauer from last year’s WHL champion, the Edmonton Oil Kings. He was recently hired as an assistant coach by the Winnipeg Jets.
Ex-Pack/Bridgeport Sound Tiger, Ted Donato, has bowed out of the US WJC team as one of its assistants. Grant Potulny, a former Springfield Falcon and the brother of ex-Pack Ryan Potulny, the head coach of Northern Michigan (CCHA), takes his place.
Former Whaler Brad Shaw has left the Vancouver Canuks and has been named the new assistant coach in Philadelphia. He joins John Tortorella's Flyers coaching staff.
