Postcards from Snagglepuss
Shallow lake, but amazingly divable
SOUTH SHORE BOAT LANDING, CLEAR LAKE, IOWA: So it was on a slightly hazy and at once muggy afternoon such as seems endemic to summertime in Iowa that yours truly and Huckleberry Hound met up with Peter Potamus, our Ambassador of Diving within the Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera (as if you didn't know it already), on a diving pontoon to discover the underwater side of Clear Lake. Which, by all accounts, even allowing for recent dredging to improve water quality and fish habitat, can get to be remarkably clear.
"As a matter of fact," Peter was quick to remark in explaining the purpose and intent of the dive, "yours truly did a few exploratory dives in this lake off and on during the Character Convocation, and couldn't help but find such amazing clarity living up to the name!"
"Even if the waters seem a little greenish," Huckleberry Hound was quick to note.
"Doubtless to be expected," the hippo noted. "But equally interesting is that average lake depth is around 10-12 feet, with the maximum lake depth being around 18 feet ... meaning that we might want to go for breathhold diving for the most part, considering such dimensions!"
"And what could await this alligator at this lake's deepest point, don't you know!" was how Wally Gator responded, prompting Peter to add "I wouldn't count on much, not even sunken treasure or the prospect thereof!"
"Yet, from experiences I've had diving before with you," remarked I, "you like enjoying diving as a sociably entertaining thing ... relaxing, even!"
"Snag," Peter noted, "I kind of like that sense of whimsy in you!"
With that, yours truly, Huck, Wally Gator, Breezly Bruin and not forgetting Peter Potamus, got into the mask-and-fins getup usual with breathhold diving and set the pontoon off for the deepest point in the whole of Clear Lake, about a quarter mile northerly of Woodford Island ... reinforced by depth trackers of the sort fishermen are fond of using, and prepared to get diving.
Dropping anchor, and hoisting the Diver Down even, it was a pretty interesting sort of splash into Clear Lake, unlike with SCUBA. Once in the lake, Peter went into the breathing portion of the Hippo Hurricane Howler, signal for us to go into deep breathing ere the descent begins ... and how amazing for such a party as ours to find such an amazingly beaut sort of lake, finding its deepest spot rather quickly surrounded by the company of lake bass, trout, bluegills and assorted panfish ... remember how they used to feed fish in the aquarium tanks at Marineland back in the day?
The lake bottom ... practically soft sand enough for our party to kneel down and go into the Underwater Hippo Hug, if you know what I mean. And can Peter Potamus HUG!!! (As he would explain it when we got back on the boat: "It just came into me once while I was diving in Polynesia's uncharted reaches, inspired somewhat by a native boy who, as he was diving, hugged his girlfriend most wonderfully, prompting yours truly to try as much. And what could certainly feel more fascinating to this diver than to show affection by hugging your heart out underwater?")
A little later on, another such dive to an area on Clear Lake's south side of about average (8-10') depth. Again, going breathhold. And to sense the feel of lake grasses swirling in such underwater currents as much as the sight!
Meanwhile, for our next stop ... Okoboji. "And I understand the Three Wolves will be having their bivouac there!" was what Peter Potamus noted over a hot dog roast back at a picnic area in Clear Lake State Park that evening, more or less the fond ending of a rather interesting Character Convocation weekend.

The Super Mario Bros movie is AMAZING!!! Princess Peach was so cool in the movie! I loved every scene she was in!聽
One thing I was really hoping for was that they would give Princess Peach an underwater scene in the movie, sadly that never happened. So, that's what motivated me to make this drawing!聽
Princess peach here decided to go for a swim, so she jumped in and decided to look around the beautiful underwater world that was around her!

So just picture this diving-type scenario:
No less than our Divin' Wolf Pups (as in Bon-Bon and Ding-a-Ling), during a SCUBA session among the World-Renowned and Far-Famed Ten Thousand Lakes of Minnesota, discovering what turns out being the vent hole of a spring behind the particular lake they're diving in ... and feeling the ticklish sensation of bubbles from the vent hole as the spring releases forth another gush of water.
Which, at the same moment, finds the Hair Bear Bunch in the same lake doing a breath-hold diving session, eventually encountering the Divin' Wolf Pups ... and leading to quite the underwater bear hug.
Plenty to talk about back at the surface!!
