oh and apparently even though whaling has been banned by most countries over 300,000 cetaceans are killed every year by the worldwide fishing industries & their careless practices (+ a lot of seals & sea turtles & sharks too+not that many people care about them since they're "scary"). this is one of the reasons I don't eat seafood aside from farm raised shrimp occasionally. there's also 3 countries, norway iceland & japan that STILL hunt cetaceans commercially & legally. they use these explosive harpoons that don't even kill the whales instantly. the avg time it takes for them to die is like 20 minutes, they actually measured it & compiled the data in iceland I believe, then still refused to make whaling permanently illegal despite it violating their own fucking animal welfare laws. awful. the only people who have any right to kill whales are the inuit & other indigenous people who have always used them as a primary food source. the profit seeking commercial whalers can drown for all I care.

there's this documentary called the cove that I watched a long time ago, about a few villages in japan that routinely round up thousands of dolphins for mass slaughter despite the fact that the meat is contaminated with mercury & no one wants to eat it. then they kidnap some of them to sell to aquariums where conditions are so bad that the dolphins have been known to literally commit suicide by swimming to the bottom of the tank and breathing in water on purpose. it's difficult for people to comprehend an animal committing suicide bc it implies a level of control over their strongest instincts as well as being a clear indicator of sentience & a concept of mortality, & that makes exploiting them even more indefensible. they have personalities & a sense of self & they grieve the loss of their mates & babies, but to evil people they're only worth as much as they can sell them for, & others turn a blind eye bc they like getting to see them up close through the glass.

the horrible captive conditions are obv not exclusive to japan, we all know how seaworld operates. plus tons of zoos & aquariums worldwide-including my local one here in chicago unfortunately-have dolphins & beluga whales (tho unlike seaworld they normally don't have orcas) in their chlorine tanks. I don't understand how keeping cetaceans in little swimming pools where they're obviously miserable doesn't meet the definition of animal cruelty. these are very intelligent and emotional beings & you're killing their souls just to put them on display for humans to gawk at. it's like throwing someone in prison for life when they did nothing wrong.

this notion of humans having a god given dominion over nature & every other species is such a male way of relating to other living beings. the idea of might makes right, that bc you're capable of inflicting violence on physically vulnerable individuals-women, children, civilizations that aren't as technologically advanced, or animals-that you have the god given RIGHT to do so, & of course it all ties into christianity. manifest fucking destiny, so let's shoot the buffalo for sport & kill off an entire continents worth of people just bc they don't have guns & are therefore savages (the most backwards shit I've ever heard in my entire life).

I remember my father, who is a born again christian, told me when I went vegetarian as a kid that what I was doing was stupid bc "animals were put on this earth by god for us to enjoy" what the fuck is wrong with him! eating meat is natural of course & necessary in some cases but not the torture that goes on in factory farms where basically all the meat in our country comes from! humans (men specifically, since we are just a footnote that came from their rib) are the literal center of the universe to christians. that's why they so fervently reject the idea of extraterrestrial life, esp if it's more advanced than we are. the existence of NHI totally demolishes their entire worldview, & since they're stubborn idiots they'll say any aliens that make contact w/ us are demons. my dad always says that with such confidence, close minded doesn't even begin to cover it.
