No one would call an artist from India “British” or an artist from Peru “Spanish,” so why do museums continue to label Ukrainian artists as “Russian”?

The misnomer issue is nothing new. Researchers and curators from Ukraine have been contacting institutions like the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and Centre Pompidou for years to ask them to acknowledge the Ukrainian descent of some of the artists in their Russian collection. These requests were mostly ignored before the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Ukrainian culture (and any other post-Soviet/post-Russian Empire oppressed culture, for that matter) is successfully erased from global art history. And virtually every museum collection is an example of this erasure. Ukrainian art historian Oksana Semenik, who is now studying at Rutgers University, provides more proof of that. As an assistant curator at the Zimmerli, the biggest collection of Soviet non-conformist art in the US, Semenik examined the museum archive to find out that out of 900 artists labeled  “Russian,” 71 were Ukrainians, and 80 were artists of other nationalities like Belarusian, Latvian, Lithuanian, etc. “About 15% of the ‘Russian’ collection is misidentified. But when I asked if this could be changed, the response was: The identity question is not relevant these days,” Semenik said.

If this question is irrelevant, then why does “Russian” remain? “Some curators told me that using Ukraine in the caption is incorrect since there was no such country at that time,” Semenik continued. She also checked the online archive of the Smithsonian Institution and found 42 Ukrainian artists labeled “born Kharkov, Russia” or “born Odessa, Russia,” among other examples. In fact, a country called “Russia” did not exist before 1991, either. But the problem is bigger here — attributing Ukrainian cities to Russia, especially in the current context, rings like blatant Kremlin propaganda.

To be unable to recognize the difference between the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and the Russian Federation or Russia is a shameful mistake for institutions whose archives are used as credible academic sources. “It’s tough to acknowledge that the history Western art historians were learning for years, all those tons of books about Malevych and the Russian avant-garde, were part of the Russian propaganda,” Semenik added.

Rewatching the Eurovision Flag Parade and it is honestly baffling to me that iconic Ukrainian artists like Go_A, Tina Karol, Jamala and Verka Serduchka got barely 30 seconds of screen-time each (if that) while there was literally a twelve minute performance during the interval dedicated solely to British music. Sam Ryder even got a better performance slot than Kalush Orchestra who actually won last year...

Having been to Liverpool and attended Semi-Final One I do think there has been a good balance of British/Ukrainian music and culture overall this year, but that completely went out the window in yesterday’s final. The Ukrainian artists really should have been the interval acts instead 😕

The Naked Room

The Naked Room is a contemporary art gallery on Raiterska Street, the hip thoroughfare known for its bars, coffee houses, and concept stores. Housed in a fin de siècle building, the gallery showcases the works of contemporary Ukrainian artists. Previous exhibitors have included Pavlo Makov, Sasha Kurmaz, and Viktor Marushchenko. Alongside its exhibition space, the Naked Room contains a bookshop and an alluring bar. The gallery was founded in 2018 by curators Lizaveta German, Maria Lanko and Swiss-British film director Marc Raymond Wilkins.

Anyone who has ever said stuff like "culture outside of politics" in regards to russia and spreading russian art/media/music/etc. — kindly, educate yourself.

First of all — a little bit of history lesson. Russia is an imperialist state. Always has been. Over the course of its history (russian empire, the ussr, whatever names it held at any given time period) russia has colonised countless Eastern European and Central Asian nations. Over 90% of russian "culture" is culture stolen from those nations. Ivan Aivazovsky, Kazimir Malevich? The artists I bet you thought were russian? Yeah, they're Ukrainian; and that's only two I can name off the top of my head.

But sure, let's say the art you're sharing is really russian; what's wrong with sharing some art? The war is just the politicians fault, and can you imagine if someone had tried to "cancel" British culture like this for all the atrocities they've done???

Well, I'm sorry, I can't seem to remember Britain committing any genocides in 2023. Use your head — you're you're using the same "separate the art from the artist" argument — there is literally no way to do it if the "artist" is alive and profits from it! And russia does profit: of course there're music and movies and video games, profits from which are literally going to help create weapons to kill Ukrainians; but that is already obvious. No, I want to tell about how russian "culture", "art", things that don't bring them money still are helping russians in their invasion.

It's all about popularising and media presence; it is about making you believe that politics are completely separate from other aspects of life; it is about gathering sympathy for "poor russians" whose government is at fault, and they're just people: with history (colonizing), culture (stolen), their lives (which are, apparently, worth more than the lives of Ukrainians).

It's about spreading the propaganda that regular people are not at fault, that it's the government, that it's only one man responsible for the entire war, that real people are against it! And the more you believe that — the more you begin seeing russians as being victims instead of oppressors, and the more you begin to undermine Ukraine's fight for our lives — "how can we sanction russia, there are poor people living there", "how can we give Ukrainians weaponry, they're killing russians!"

Here's the thing: russians are not against the war. They're not afraid to revolt because they're scared for their lives. They're the ones in tanks, with guns in hands shooting civilians and bombing hospitals. They're the ones sitting in the comfort of their homes writing on social media how Ukrainians deserve to be raped and murdered simply for being Ukrainian (you don't see a lot of that — it's in russian. But a lot of Ukrainians know russian, so we do. We share it, too, for you to see it — but you don't want to)

And those "apolitical" russians, who don't claim to support the war, you know what they do? They take "aesthetic" photos of Mariupol — a Ukrainian city, completely burned down by russians. They call it "doing whatever they want in their country"

Even the most "liberal" "anti-war" russian doesn't think Crimea is Ukrainian.

But of course, you don't want to listen. You want to pretend that russians don't protest because they're scared for their lives, and you want to continue to consume russian media uncritically, because you think that if russians will have to face consequences for their crimes, then you, American or British will have to do so as well.

You should be thinking "my country did terrible things, that's why we need to learn from our mistakes and don't let anyone else do those things", but instead you're thinking "my country did terrible things and experienced little to no consequence, that's why we should let other countries do the same!", and it shows.

The ProEnglish Theatre of Ukraine in Kyiv and the Finborough Theatre, London, UK, continue their ongoing partnership with a unique poetry collaboration, premiering online at www.finboroughtheatre.co.uk from Friday, 24 February 2023 at dawn (6.23am), a year exactly since Russia invaded Ukraine.

Four Poems From Ukraine features four classic Ukrainian poems of the last 180 years, performed first in English by British actors, filmed in London and Toronto; and then again in Ukrainian (with English subtitles) by Ukrainian actors, filmed in the bombsites of Irpyn.

The performers include poet, composer and activist Bréon Rydell who recently returned from an extended fact-finding mission to Ukraine; Linda Thorson, best known for her iconic performance as Tara King in The Avengers; star of stage and screen Toby Stephens; and Kristin Milward who in December 2022 became the first foreign actor to perform in Ukraine since the invasion with the Finborough Theatre production of Pussycat in Memory of Darkness (which will shortly return for another run at the Finborough Theatre). The Ukrainian actors are all members of the ProEnglishTheatre of Ukraine – Alex Borovenskiy, Artistic Director of the ProEnglish Theatre of Ukraine; Yulia Prylutska, Daniil Prymachov and Kateryna Yakymets.

The poets are Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861), widely considered as one of the founders of the modern written Ukrainian language; Lina Kostenko (born 1930), famed for reviving Ukrainian-language lyric poetry, and one of the defining figures of Ukraine’s Sixties poetry movement; Serhiy Zhadan (born 1974), one of the most significant contemporary poets of Ukraine, whose influence extends into further fields through his work as an essayist, musician, translator and social activist; and Kateryna Kalytko (born 1982), winner of the 2017 Joseph Conrad Literature prize.

Jamala presents an album dedicated to Crimea together with BBC Orchestra

Ukrainian Crimean Tatar singer Jamala presents her new album QIRIM ("Crimea") together with BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. The live performance will take place on May 11 in Liverpool as part of the British-Ukrainian EuroFestival at Eurovision 2023.

QIRIM includes 14 ancient songs, each of which represents a certain area of ​​the Crimean Peninsula and presents the local culture and language. More than 80 musicians joined the work on the album.

"Today, the language in which the compositions are written is on the verge of death, according to UNESCO. The people who created these records have been under threat of extinction for centuries. But is it possible to erase the memory of the monumental beauty of music, which was passed down from generation to generation?" — Jamala said.

Another point that should be made is that Kate's piano performance is literally an example of someone "making it about themselves".

Usually, that accusation is thrown around without evidence, but let's think about it for a second. If you didn't watch Eurovision you would have no that Kate was doing this in support of Ukraine. You would just think it's her showing off her talent for the piano. If you look at the comments on British Vogue, and Kensington Palace's socials, no one is mentioning the actual cause behind the video. They're just talking about Kate.

I can't blame them, the social media posts make no mention of the Ukrainian artists who she was supporting and when I first saw that video I thought it was just something specific to Kate, nothing about the social media post told me about anything outside of Kate playing the piano. I only found out she was supporting Ukraine when I went to go look up what brand of dress she was wearing, that's when.

So, when I'm only finding out the "cause" you're supporting after I find out what luxury brand you're wearing . . . Huston We Have, A Problem.

So, if that's what people mean when they say Kate's "gone Hollywood", I can respect that. However, there are plenty of people who are in Hollywood who support causes not as branding, but because they care and they've made it their life's work. Jane Fonda has done better work and activism than most royals do in their lifetimes and she's a Hollywood actress. Someone like Angelina Jolie is a great example of a person who is a star that uses her platform to highlight certain causes without overshadowing them or coming off as vapid. Kate could learn a lot from her, to be honest.

One thing that’s really annoying me is why the fuck they didn’t call Ukrainian hosts. 

Yes, I understand the reason why they show couldn’t actually be hosted in Ukraine, I am not stupid, but it is also true that last year it was Ukraine that actually won, so why not have artists and show hosts to celebrate their country.

ALSO why is the presentations of the singers (the little bits at the beginning that showcase beautiful places and the singers having fun I don’t know what to call them sorry) there are British places?? A series of notes on my cultural/fashion inspiration for some miscellaneous houses and regions within ASOIAF! Unfinished bc I can only fixate on so many families. A basic rule of thumb is that fashion may overlap closer to borders or with characters who have a close connection to a region outside of their native one. Not tagging this bc it’s a commentary to go with my own art and not an analysis of actual inspirations for Westerosi cultures. Like at all.

The Northmen (-Iron Islands) : the main inspirations I’ve always come back to for the North is Indigenous and Slavic inspirations. I use First Nations, Inuit, and Métis fashion influences alongside Slavic fashion as well. In terms of ethnicity it’s a mixed bag as well. The Starks, minus the inclusion of Cat, in particular I’ve always seen as Algonquin, based on the irl region of these people spanning north in wooded regions. Ukrainian fashion specifically comes to mind as an inspiration for many of my pieces, including those I’ve yet to post.

The Iron Islands: Scandinavian 100%. I do imagine a lot of overlap from the mainland indigenous-inspired population, which also has irl historical merit, fun fact (Erikson’s expedition circa 1000). Major Viking vibes with the islands, as GRRM intended. I also like to include “foreign” jewelry, fashion, and accessory styles with Ironborn designs due to the Iron Price, as well as their trading with foreign merchants.

The Free Folk: Iron Islands/Northmen love child. Scandinavian and Indigenous inspirations, though the Slavic has fallen out at this point. More Inuit inspired fashion starts appearing in my inspo list at this point.

Riverlands: Ireland. House Tully especially. Those girls are Irish. Plaids are common fashion, which overlaps into the Stormlands (see Stormlander category). Flowing fabrics and leather armour alongside the more modern chainmail. Knotted pattern embroideries. This would make the Stark kids, minus Jon, Indigenous-Irish inspired, though most take after their mother over their father.

Stormlands: Scottish icons. Especially House Baratheon and House Connington. Like the Tullys, plaid is a common fashion. Tight hairstyles or head coverings for women for efficiency against the wind. Differs for formal wear where weather is not an issue. Paler features due to lack of sun, rather weather beaten depending on the occupation and habits of the person (do they sail often, do they hunt despite the weather, etc). Thick Scottish accents because there’s no way Robert and Jon don’t have a Scottish accent, I don’t buy them being British one bit. Kilts would be pretty cool too. Generic historical drama chainmail with a hint of kilts or plaids depending on the person in question.

The Reach: Mediterranean Europe is my go to for the Reach. Dark hair, tan skin, artistic clothing. A huge focus on art and renaissance, with fashion and accessory inspirations coming in from Dorne in the south. Italian renaissance, with a hint of Tudor England in the fashion. The wealth of the region is evident in the higher class’ fashion sense. Nice jewelry, embroidery, and fabrics. Even prettier armour.

The Westerlands : to be determined. I’ve been playing with a bunch of different fashion eras and have settled on Tudor as a default, but this may change. I’ve been debating playing around with French and German fashion in the future.

Dorne: I read somewhere that Dorne was inspired by Palestine, “Moorish” or Islamic Spain, and Wales (?) and the first two stuck with me. Don’t know where the third one came from but ok. North African/European/West Asian cultural overlap. Islamic European fashion and architecture is a new endeavour of mine so I’m still playing around with combinations and stuff but I have the vibe figured out. Ethnically, North African and West Asian inspired peoples with more European overlap or even complete European the further north. Different houses/regions have different irl inspirations but that’s too deep for me to dig into at the moment.

The Targaryens : BYZANTINE!!! The oldest Targaryens of old Valyria were Byzantinian, yet the fashion and culture began drifting away and is only present in small forms by the time Rhaegar and Viserys come into the picture.
