Whether thinking about DJ Kool Herc and Doug E Fresh, Fat Joe and Big Pun, N.O.R.E. and Juelz, or even Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Pop Smoke, and Ice Spice, Caribbeans and Latinos have been integral to the birth, growth, and continuation of Hip-Hop.

Tbt to transition South Africa by the Market Photo Workshops which was well received at Bronx Documentary Center in the Bronx New York 16April-26May Thanks to all the artist who participated in the group show and entrusting me with your work Shout out to @_marketphotoworkshop X @bronxdocumentarycenter 📸@cebi07_creative 30 years since the renowned photographer David Goldblatt (1930-2018) founded Market Photo Workshop (MPW), a non-profit photography education center in Johannesburg, South Africa. “Transitions: South Africa,” an exhibition at Bronx Documentary Center, honors the work MPW has undertaken over the past three decades to help bring photography to the forefront of social consciousness in South Africa. Through its training programs focused on photography and multimedia, and its public programming, MPW has played a significant role in shifting the visual dynamic in South Africa from the colonial gaze to stories that challenge racist perspectives. In the late 20th century, journalism and documentary photography began to thrive in South Africa as people fought for their independence. Photography was used as a tool to challenge the narratives of those in power and show the realities of key political and historical events. Opening its doors five years before the end of Apartheid in 1994, “the work of MPW has also become a powerful resource in documenting current issues, which helps set the conversation for the future—and gives individuals the power to create their own narratives,” writes MPW in a statement. These new images and narratives from South Africa have reached around the globe, crossing boundaries of language and culture, and have helped shape social consciousness in the minds of viewers. The images in “Transitions,” created by MPW alumni, aim to show the contemporary role of photography in South Africa and explore how the former students view their communities and South African society at large. “Transitions: South Africa” Bronx Documentary Center Curated by Nathi Khumalo, Khona Dlamini, Lekgetho Makola, Michael Kamber and Cynthia Rivera #curation #bronxdocumentarycenter #marketphotoworkshop #NewYork #USA https://www.instagram.com/bhande_nathi/p/ByXqOPpjuiA/?igshid=r235mxd0mf7b

📷📰 #ArtIsAWeapon Well done @bronxdocumentarycenter 's student journalists! #BDCFocus 👏🏿✊🏿
Reposted from @bronxdocumentarycenter In the best tradition of American journalism, BDC student journalists are helping protect the environment and create accountability from leaders in their community.
Following the publication of the first issue of our new student newspaper, BDC Focus, the paper's investigative report "NYCHA Lights Raise Concern for Residents" was widely publicized by prominent local media outlet BX News12.
In the feature, #BJPL students recount how their two-month-long investigation revealed that #NYCHA is violating the agency’s own guidelines, leaving on more than 200 high-wattage lights during the day at Melrose, Patterson and Jackson Houses, three South Bronx developments that are home to more than 8,800 residents. By the student journalists’ calculations, at current commercial Con Edison rates, this amounts to $82,804 in wasted tax dollars.
"Shedding light on issues like this proves just how important investigative journalism is today," said BX News12 reporter Anthony Carlo. Concluding his coverage of the story, Carlo added "The students say their burning passion for journalism is what the world needs more of!"
"Young journalists put spotlight on city housing agency in student newspaper," which aired on BX News12 on December 15, 2022.
