The Latin American Foto Festival, on display now through July 21, takes place on the streets of the South Bronx and at the Bronx Documentary Center in New York City. The festival is exhibiting photographs and installations, in addition to organizing workshops and panel discussions, all with the goal of generating awareness about the current situation in Latin America and providing an opportunity for the wider community to witness and understand the diverse stories throughout the region. Their works focus on political and economic crisis, migration, racism, discrimination, violence, corruption, and how women and Afro-Latino communities live. The Latin American Foto Festival also focuses on Mexican and Central American photographers who explore the link between violence and migration, a theme that is prevalent in Luis Soto's work from Guatemala. "Tierra de Nadie," arises from the need to treat images as living documents of the memory of Guatemala. “It’s a big portrait of a country that is still in the fight to survive in an unequal and painful context,” Soto explained to Global Citizen. “Latin America still has similar conflicts and problems, such as violence, poverty, migration crisis,” Soto said. “This festival allows a common voice that shouts, ‘We are here, and these are our problems,' in order to transcend the media agenda and the global coverage." Read more about Latin American Foto Festival and the projects that are highlighted at this link. (📷: © Luis Soto)

Tbt to transition South Africa by the Market Photo Workshops which was well received at Bronx Documentary Center in the Bronx New York 16April-26May Thanks to all the artist who participated in the group show and entrusting me with your work Shout out to @_marketphotoworkshop X @bronxdocumentarycenter 📸@cebi07_creative 30 years since the renowned photographer David Goldblatt (1930-2018) founded Market Photo Workshop (MPW), a non-profit photography education center in Johannesburg, South Africa. “Transitions: South Africa,” an exhibition at Bronx Documentary Center, honors the work MPW has undertaken over the past three decades to help bring photography to the forefront of social consciousness in South Africa. Through its training programs focused on photography and multimedia, and its public programming, MPW has played a significant role in shifting the visual dynamic in South Africa from the colonial gaze to stories that challenge racist perspectives. In the late 20th century, journalism and documentary photography began to thrive in South Africa as people fought for their independence. Photography was used as a tool to challenge the narratives of those in power and show the realities of key political and historical events. Opening its doors five years before the end of Apartheid in 1994, “the work of MPW has also become a powerful resource in documenting current issues, which helps set the conversation for the future—and gives individuals the power to create their own narratives,” writes MPW in a statement. These new images and narratives from South Africa have reached around the globe, crossing boundaries of language and culture, and have helped shape social consciousness in the minds of viewers. The images in “Transitions,” created by MPW alumni, aim to show the contemporary role of photography in South Africa and explore how the former students view their communities and South African society at large. “Transitions: South Africa” Bronx Documentary Center Curated by Nathi Khumalo, Khona Dlamini, Lekgetho Makola, Michael Kamber and Cynthia Rivera #curation #bronxdocumentarycenter #marketphotoworkshop #NewYork #USA https://www.instagram.com/bhande_nathi/p/ByXqOPpjuiA/?igshid=r235mxd0mf7b

📷📰 #ArtIsAWeapon Well done @bronxdocumentarycenter 's student journalists! #BDCFocus 👏🏿✊🏿
Reposted from @bronxdocumentarycenter In the best tradition of American journalism, BDC student journalists are helping protect the environment and create accountability from leaders in their community.
Following the publication of the first issue of our new student newspaper, BDC Focus, the paper's investigative report "NYCHA Lights Raise Concern for Residents" was widely publicized by prominent local media outlet BX News12.
In the feature, #BJPL students recount how their two-month-long investigation revealed that #NYCHA is violating the agency’s own guidelines, leaving on more than 200 high-wattage lights during the day at Melrose, Patterson and Jackson Houses, three South Bronx developments that are home to more than 8,800 residents. By the student journalists’ calculations, at current commercial Con Edison rates, this amounts to $82,804 in wasted tax dollars.
"Shedding light on issues like this proves just how important investigative journalism is today," said BX News12 reporter Anthony Carlo. Concluding his coverage of the story, Carlo added "The students say their burning passion for journalism is what the world needs more of!"
"Young journalists put spotlight on city housing agency in student newspaper," which aired on BX News12 on December 15, 2022.

In the series "Cimarrona," photographer Johis Alarcon's explores the cultural roots of Afro-Ecuadorian communities and their spirituality in Ecuador. Nicole Carcelén, 19, is pictured here with a cotton plant in her hair. The black slaves who first came to Ecuador were forced to work in cotton fields, cane fields and coal mines. For Nicole, cotton plants represent the strength of her ancestors. Alarcon's work is just one of the projects featured in this year's Latin American Foto Festival, which offers a stunning window into the regions diverse cultures. The second edition of the annual photography exhibition, on display now through July 21, takes place on the streets of the South Bronx and at the Bronx Documentary Center in New York City. The festival exhibits photographs and installations and also holds workshops and panel discussions, some of them in Spanish. This year’s nine featured photographers are award-winning professionals from throughout the Caribbean and Latin America, and nearly all of them live and work in their home countries. The goal of the festival is to generate awareness about the current situation in Latin America and the opportunity for the wider community to witness and understand the diverse stories throughout the region. “I think it’s very important to generate empathy and connect the viewer to other people's lives in other parts of the world," Michael Kamber, Director of the Bronx Documentary Center, told Global Citizen. Read more about Latin American Foto Festival and the projects that are highlighted at this link. (📷: © Johis Alarcón)
