The New York Pops: 21st Century Broadway at Carnegie Hall Review
Last Friday night, I attended The New York Pops' performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City. When arriving into the building, you can sense how incredible iconic this building is, especially it was built in 1891 and it is now 132 years old. A six level tier of gold rimmed balconies enclosed the rotunda of the theatre with a beautiful glass chandelier shining above the red velvet seats below. Before the show started, we as audience heard the orchestra in their best clothing, warming up with their instruments, playing several notes from variety songs that was going to be performed. Then the music director Steven Reineke arrived to the stage, leading the orchestra to play the overture from Mel Brooks' "The Producers" the Musical. The orchestra and Steve delivered an outstanding performance that left us audience feeling extremely excited for the next two and a half hours.
After finishing a song, Steven welcomed us and introduced the next performer, Hailey Kilgore. Hailey is a Tony-nominated actress known for her role in 'Once On This Island'. She began her performance with a beautiful rendition of "All that Matters" from the musical 'Finding Neverland'. She then delighted the audience with a fun and energetic performance of "Fabulous, Baby!" from 'Sister Act' the Musical. Next, Javier Munoz (Lin Manuel Miranda's in 'Hamilton' and 'In the Heights'), joined the stage with Hailey. The duo performed a lovely rendition of "When the Sun Goes Down" from the musical 'In The Heights', showcasing their harmonious voices blending together. Before Javier sang "Proud of Your Boy" from Disney's 'Aladdin', he explained that the song holds meaning for parents and anyone with children. Next he finishes his singing segment of his performance with a heartfelt rendition of "Love Who You Love" by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty from the musical 'A Man of No Importance'.
Derek looked sharp in his blue tuxedo as he took the stage. His first song, "My Petersburg" from the iconic creative team of 'Anastasia', Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty and Terrence McNally. It was absolutely glorious to listen to and watch, as he transformed into the beloved character Dmitry right before our eyes. He followed it up with a jaw-dropping and heart-wrenching rendition of "Perfect" from Alanis Morrisette and Glen Ballard's 'Jagged Little Pill'. He portrayed the character Nick Healy who is faced pressure with of his parents pushing him to be successful in academic and sports. Despite the show's short run due to the Covid pandemic, Derek's performance rightfully earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in 2021.
Tony Award Winner from 'Oklahoma', Ali Stroker joins Derek on stage, and they sang "You Matter to Me" from 'Waitress'. I really would love to see her and Derek together in another show on Broadway at some point in their career, their chemistry was so adorable for words. And I absolutely loved Ali's mind-blowing performances of "A Summer in Ohio" from Jason Robert Brown's "The Last Five Years" and Justin Paul and Benj Pasek's "Waving Through The Window" from 'Dear Evan Hansen". I couldn't believe how insane of her breath control she had while sitting in the wheelchair, and singing so ever effortlessly and so incredibly beautifully! My goodness! No wonder why she won a Tony Award. After her piece, the show paused for a fifteen minute intermission.
Once we came back from the intermission, the orchestra began to play the lively tune of the overture from 'Curtains' the Musical. After that, the four performers returned to the stage and sang a gorgeous rendition of "Purple Summer" from 'Spring Awakening'. Then it was Javier's turn to sing "Hurricane" from one of the most known shows on Broadway, 'Hamilton'. Once after he was finished, Derek joined him onstage - singing "Dear Theodosia" from Hamilton. It was so captivating and meaningful, especially now Derek has a little boy. Before Derek sang “Goodbye” from 'Catch Me If You Can', he told us the story where he saw a boot of Aaron Tveit in 'Catch Me If You Can' during its out-of-town run in Seattle, so Derek and his piano accompanist made an arrangement for his concert in Los Angeles. Marc Shaiman heard him singing this song via a Google alert and asked Derek to send a recording for as Aaron’s standby before coming to Broadway through a facebook message. With him alone singing solo pieces from each show, definitely made me wish that he would return to Broadway soon. Even though, he spent nearly 14 months on Broadway for his time as Christian in 'Moulin Rouge' (including his brief hiatus), the months went by so fast though! But I know most of us Derek fans and Broadway fans are waiting patiently now, it will be worth it once he returns with the show that is completely in his own creation, like 'Anastasia' and 'Jagged Little Pill' for example rather than replacing someone else in the show.
For Ali's final solo piece, she sang a hilarious song called "Diva's Lament" from the Broadway show 'Spamalot'. Through her rendition, Ali aimed to provide a sneak peek of what audiences can expect from the song, as well as potentially the entire show, which is scheduled to make its return to Broadway within the month. To commemorate Wicked's 20th anniversary, Ali and Hailey gave a stunning duet of "For Good" from the show. I would love see these duos in 'Wicked' in the future! Hailey gave a outstanding performance of "I'm Here" from 'The Color Purple' that left a lasting impression on the audience, resulting in a five-minute standing ovation. The chorus concert members of Susan E. Wagner High School joined Derek, Ali, Hailey, and Javier for an encore performance of "You Will Be Found" from 'Dear Evan Hansen'. The combination of their young voices blending with the quartet and the orchestra created a truly beautiful and such moving musical experience.
Overall, I really enjoyed the concert so much. It was awesome to go to see The New York Pops' concert, which featured a variety of Broadway songs from the early 2000's to 2023. It was amazing to hear different singers perform throughout the show. I know last year and even this year has been such a whirlwind but he had two amazing years, accomplishing so many goals especially making his debut at the Carnegie Hall. I am truly ecstatic to see where he goes from here with this ongoing journey with his life and career; whether it's a performance at iconic theatre, Broadway, television/films and etc. If you want to see or follow more updates on Derek, you can follow him on instagram - @derek_klena or on twitter: @DerekKlena

Okay, here comes another opinion, and this is a long one.
What is the point of Austin Holt? Roger Howarth’s evolution on GH has always puzzled me. First, he arrived on the scene as OLTL’s popular Todd Manning. Since OLTL had been cancelled, I thought this was a brilliant addition to the show. Todd was popular and Howarth was well known as a fantastic actor who’s character had overcome a turbulent past to get where he was (like Luke Spencer).
Alas, this was not meant to be. For whatever reason, Todd left the show and Howarth reappeared as a recast Franco, having been taken over from James Franco. Franco too had a turbulent beginning but after it was known that he’d had a brain tumor that had made him act badly towards others, and along with the love of good girl Elizabeth Webber and her boys, Franco became a well liked character and family man.
Again, this was not to last. At the height of his popularity, Franco was gunned down by Peter August, much to the shock of his fans (myself included). There had been a lot of rumors that Howarth was leaving GH, then he wasn’t, then he was. Finally, after Franco was killed, along came Austin Holt, or Gatlin-Holt, son of the infamous Quartermaine cast off Jimmy Lee Holt, the illegitimate son of Edward Quartermaine.
Tumblr media
Since then, Austin’s story has been dragged out and a bit confusing. First, he show up in town as a Granola munching, nature loving doctor who owned a lot of property in in the small town of Pautauk in upstate New York. He finds Maxie Jones in labor in the woods, helps her give birth and gets hit on the head for his troubles. When his identity (Austin Gatlin-Holt) was discovered, he decided to go after the Q fortune (to avenge the way his Dad was treated), but backs out when Brook Lynn blackmails him over his medical ethics. Then that was it. Oh he declared war on Brook Lynn and said that this wasn't over, except it was. He was completely out of the Q story, never mind that he’s a cousin, just nothing. Then he starts up a totally boring relationship with Maxie (I’m sorry, those two have zero chemistry).
As his relationship with Maxie continued to grow (snore), a mystery man pops up in Austin’s life. This mystery man is named Mason (or so Austin says). Mason reminds Austin that the mission has failed. He orders Austin back to Pautauk, and Austin reluctantly agrees, after he returns, he blackmails Spinelli to use Society Setups (a dating app that Spinelli secretly runs) to prove to Maxie that they are a perfect match. It fails however as Maxie learns of his deception and currently wonders if he’s the man for her (he’s not!) Since then, the story with Mason and Austin’s past has dragged on and been overshadowed by the Port Charles Hooker (I should come up with another name).
Tumblr media
My point is, I loved the character of Franco. I loved that he had a good relationship with his stepsons who truly mourned his passing, his loving relationship with Elizabeth (with whom he had incredible chemistry) and with his father Scott Baldwin.
Plus, the return of Drew Cain (another bad recast), who Franco thought of as a brother, was yet another plot line that went unexplored.
The reason behind Howarth’s leaving the show is mysterious, there were rumors that he didn’t like Franco’s torturous history (I thought actors loved that sort of thing) but the character of Austin has just not caught on with viewers. His relationship with Maxie is not a hit with fans either and many want to see him return as Franco (it can be done you know, maybe some sinister person faked his death-I’m telling you, it can be done).
Actors leaving popular characters and returning to inhabit new characters NEVER works. Noted examples of this is Tony Geary, the legendary actor returned to GH after leaving Luke Spencer behind years prior to become Bill Eckert. A mysterious man who returns to Port Charles to be near his working class family and his son Sly. The character never caught on, despite the show throwing him together with Luke’s former love Holly Sutton. Soon, Bill was killed and Luke Spencer returned.
Tumblr media
Then came Claudia Zacchara , the daughter of a mobster. The character was played by uber-popular Sarah Joy Brown. Sarah debuted as Carly Benson and her character schemed her way to becoming the wife of mobster Sonny Corinthos. After Brown left the show, it was taken over by many actresses, finally by Laura Wright, who made Carly her own. Then Brown announced she would return as Claudia. However, it was confusing to have both actresses on, and fans couldn’t accept Brown as anyone else but Carly and the character of Claudia was killed off after stealing Carly’s baby (in an episode that felt like The Twilight Zone).
Finally, came Austin Gatlin-Holt. You’d think by now the show runners would understand that there is something very special about a character that catches on with the audience and trying to recreate that magic after the actor has left the show is impossible.
I don’t know what will happen with Austin (nor do I really care at this point). I do think the character can be saved, but it will take some thinking on the part of the writers and the actor himself, and for God sake, give him a new love interest!

Canada Drag Race Ep 1 - Thoughts
Tldr; the judging panel/guest dynamic doesn't work
I love the premier and I'm excited for the season but I do think the show needs some work. Trying to be drag race but not "Rupaul's DR" is a difficult line to walk but I think they're currently missing it.
While I totally get what they're trying to do, theyre missing some key elements.
Firstly, the three judges dont really seem to gel that well and they were all so similar. The female judge for me especially seemed kind of off.
With RPDR there's a clear dynamic: Ru is in charge and the moderator, Carson is fashion, Ross is personality/comedy, Michele is polish, and the guest judge is about the challenge/queen overall. And they all work together really well to keep the dynamic purposeful but not overly critical. They often disagree, they bring different schools of thoughts, and they complement each other well. The judges tonight seemed a bit harsh and mostly repeated the same things over and over.
Secondly, I love brooke so much but shes hardly a funny queen. I'm sure she'll loosen up a bit over time but right now the panel just seems a bit stiff. None of the judges really seemed to bring much personality or flavour and the panel as a whole was missing the funny/lightness.
Lastly, the whole "guest host" thing was just super janky.
I dont really get the point of having a guest host instead of a guest judge. They provided critiques but don't get a vote so don't really have influence. And they aren't really even doing the hosting. They basically just walked down the runway and did the mainstage introduction, so as to not upset the "democracy trio", but Brooke was leading the panel, the critiques, and the deliberation, and was clearly in charge.
I know they're trying very hard to not make Brooke Rupaul and to establish themselves on their own rather than DRUK which was just literally DR but in London, but it's just not working.
Obviously this is all after only one episode, so I'm waiting to see how it develops, but as of right now I think it needs several major changes.
My suggestion:
1. Scrap the guest host bit and make Brooke Lynn the host. The judges still share workroom duties, but Brooke walks the runway (I mean she's the actual drag queen on the panel and the people want to see her!), introduces the mainstage, and leads/moderates the panel.
2. Replace Stacey. She's seems the least interesting and engaging on the panel, and they desperately need a comedic judge.
3. Make the guest host a guest judge and give them a vote. This means four votes for winners and lip syncs, but as host Brooke Lynn is also head judge and splits all ties. This way they retain the democracy, and better include the guest.
This I think will fix the main issues.
Sufficed to say I'm excited to see what the rest of the show will bring and I'm keen for more drag!

Can't stand Ra'Jah's selfish, hateful ass... Good riddance.
Bye, hoe. 😘
Yvie always keeps it real, which is why she's in my personal top three.
Lmaooo, Brooke Lynn is literally a queen.
Nina West is like that kooky aunt that you will never not love, but damn- that silhouette was a nO.
Vanjieeee... Spooky in that Untucked session. Clocked.
A'keria, lord, thank you for sending that dusty bitch's ass home
Plastique, a well-deserved win! Graceful little thing and it was so cute seeing her bond with Alyssa in this episode.
If Silky's hypocritical ass doesn't get sent home next, I'm protesting.
Shuga... Meh.
Okay, that's all the tea left in my pot, bye sisters.
