Rockaway Baby

Bare feet stomp on burning sand, they scout the perfect towel drop. Flipping long black braids over a muscular shoulder, the leader rolls her eyes to the sky. Her two friends fly by whipping towels. One shouts shut up, you’re so stupid! They cackle wildly. The final straggler sucks juice off her thumb; left in her wake: the core of a peach. They plant a cooler directly in front of me. I don’t mind. 

A little niño in Superman undies screams bloody murder as his papa drags him away from the water. Niño hits Papa. Papa spanks niño, who then kicks the sand past my bedsheet. I don’t mind. 

Chris does. I watch him through the sheer black shirt I have shielding my face and marvel at how vibrant the color of the sky looks against his olive skin. I hold my hands up as an imaginary frame thinking it would be a great opening to a film. If only I had a 35mm to capture this shot. 

He stands up to police his surroundings and I turn my head to fall into fifty percent sleep. I never one hundred percent sleep anymore. I have a four month old prince who is one hundred percent sleeping inside his stroller throne. I allow my eyes to close. The sun beats down on my right side, then, just when it gets too hot, the breeze swoops in to cool me off. A perfect recipe. I could stay here for hours. My son cries and my husband hoists him from his throne, holding him up against the sun. We forgot to bring a hat, an essential, apparently, for a baby at the beach, so I remove the shirt from my face and wrap it around his head like a doo-rag. He looks like a pirate. It’s a vibe. 

On the subway ride home I tell my husband I haven’t felt peace like that in a year. He touches my leg and says what a wild year you’ve had. We laugh over the fact that I gave birth. The train comes to a screeching halt and we scurry off, bags in hand, navigating our heavy stroller, rushing towards the next transfer.
