award winning studios being closed by both microsoft and 2k in the last week because game companies keep competing for the 'greediest capitalist in the bunch' title is why i keep saying publishers aren't (generally) good for game studios. you have to set yourself up for success, don't leave it to someone else. if you have a successful studio, don't sell it!

but nowadays you can't rely on the buyer of your company to keep you going and if you're selling for that stability - it no longer exists. especially not when publicly traded companies are involved. they live and breathe for making profit for their shareholders.

unrelated, microsoft probably hasn't even started working through the studios they aquired with acti-blizz-king so more layoffs are likely coming from them.. might take a while though as it was such a big beast!

so, anyway, i refer you to my previous post where i say this

fully understand the responsibilities of running a studio, having to pay salaries and making sure things are running, it just makes me a bit disappointed because the reliance on publishers in the long run is what takes good studios down.

it might seem counter intuitive but investing in even a mini-publishing department (someone to help release on stores, someone for biz-dev and someone for marketing) - and can just be freelancers coming in once a week or when needed - should help with studio sustainability because you’re not relying on getting a deal done for each game, you’re at least in charge of your own destiny.

because if anything, this whole situation with roll7 and with tango gameworks, etc. shows us that not self publishing, not investing in yourself is killing even big studios now, award winning, successful studios.

it's all so sad.

to not end on a sad note - if you want an example of a studio self publishing and investing in themselves, taking care of their people over time, look at failbetter games. so here's a little vid from their marketing person talking about how they keep it sustainable:

Crossover zwischen Tomb Raider und Hero Wars angekündigt

In den letzten Jahren hat Lara Croft im Rahmen von speziellen Events bereits mehrere fremde Spiele-Franchises besucht. Ihr kommender Ausflug wurde nun am 29. April 2024 angekündigt: Ab dem 13. Mai steht Lara Croft als spielbare Figur im Free-to-play-Titel Hero Wars zur Verfügung.

Hero Wars steht ist ein Fantasy-Action-Spiel, in dem man eine Heldentruppe auf die Beine stellt, um finstere Mächte zu besiegen. Derzeit gibt es zwei eigenständige Versionen des Titels. Hero Wars: Dominion Era als Browsergame und Hero Wars: Alliance für Android- und iOS-Geräte. Besonders cool: Das Event mit Lara Croft wird in beiden Varianten stattfinden. Laut uns vorliegenden Informationen von Crystal Dynamics soll es ab dieser Woche möglich sein, spezielle Münzen im Spiel zu sammeln, die man benötigt, um Lara aufzuleveln. Das Event endet am 26. Mai 2024. Unklar ist aktuell, ob man Lara nach diesem Datum als spielbare Figur behalten kann.

In den kommenden Tagen werden nähere Details zu den konkreten Inhalten, die Lara bei ihrem Ausflug mit sich bringt, erwartet. Wir empfehlen daher allen Spieler*innen, die keine Details zum Crossover-Event verpassen möchten, den offiziellen Hero Wars Community Blog im Auge zu behalten.
