Leo lies to get out of work to get his hair done plus additional doodle of him taking a break to get some food. Offscreen person probably didn’t even notice his hair and instead was focused on his other... “assets”

So first things first: I absolutely love Black braids, the styles are tremendous and you can absolutely tell how much effort went into making them like that. They’re really fucking beautiful. As such, I really want to try giving my Black characters braids, but that’s where my ideas and my artistic talent misalign.
I can pretty readily draw a white girl’s english braid because that’s got very large hair sections, but the smaller the pieces, the worse my rendition gets until they almost look like a racist caricature. I know Black hair doesn’t actually end up sticking out at sharp angles like that, but my attempts consistently (and mortifyingly) get to that place if the hair sections are thin. Is there a good way to shorthand braids rather than individually drawing in all the strands? Such that the concept and style of braids are conveyed but the intricacies aren’t all drawn in (at least not initially). If not, I’ll stick to hairstyles that I can draw acceptably, I just wanted to check if there’s an easier way that I’m missing before I give up for now and come back later.
-Miriam
Please be kind, I know it turns out looking really horrifically racist which is why I don’t share it, and I legitimately just want a new technique for drawing them that our mediocre-at-best fine motor control can handle with the proper respect
I myself cannot really suggest anything other than the practice you're already doing. One thing that I do with hair- because I struggle to draw thinner textures- is study other artists. I obviously don't POST these pictures and call them my own, but I'll trace over how they shaped the hair. Train my hand to how they actually physically drew it, and then try to replicate that shape before adding my own style to it.
So if you're following artists who post braided styles on their Black characters, you could try that until you're comfortable enough to attempt it on your own. Again, don't just trace and post someone else's work! I assume you're already using references too.
Also, something that might help (at least from how I'm understanding your question) is to draw the sections larger and then minimize them. Like if you draw one braid very large on the screen, then copy paste, then minimize the size until it fits on the head and modify it from there to fit a natural shape on the head. You don't have to draw it as tiny as it is on the model, that's what the tools of the program are for.
If you're doing paintings or line art, you can buy brushes that have premade braids! Vegalia sells them on Etsy. Some are filled in, others are just the outline of the braids themselves that can be filled with any color.

HORN OF AFRICA COMPILATION (+ BONUS SUDAN)
Despite being loaded with work I had the sudden urge to draw out my Horn of Africa OCs (+ bonus Sudan who snuck in there 🤷)
Anyways, I tested out Vegalia’s hair brushes while drawing these guys and I had tons of fun!! I would recommend it to anyone else who wants to try more diverse hair types, even if its just as a reference for you to draw over👍

How do you draw hair? Your style is so cool!
I REALLY HOPE YOU WANTED A TUTORIAL CUZ I MADE ONE!!!!
This is the best I could do since a lot of my process is about feeling it out and seeing what works and looks good, but this is how i tend to tackle hair! Start with basic triangle shapes while keeping in mind where the hair is originating from.
Hair texture will change how hair sits on the head because of the volume it creates! And as always I will forever promote the spectacular hair brushes made by Vegalia for coily and 4c hair.
I hope this makes sense and maybe even helps!

Three portraits I’ve done recently for my friend Noona, of her OCs Risbel, Jupiter, and Brunae! For Risbel, I used the CSP brushes I got from Vegalia to do the hair, and experimented with color jitter and ink for some light variety and depth - tbh it came out perfectly and I’m so damn happy with it dkfhakldsf HIGHLY recommend getting her brushes, 100% Anyway, these are downscaled for a reason; do not edit, repost, use for faceclaim or pfp or any other reason, etc etc

One last picture before 2023 ends.
I wanted to do a picture with Tannivh's tattoos in view, so... I did. Also I think I've finally nailed how much Tannivh has guns. He got them biceps. Archers, man.
Which makes sense given that, you know, he's pullin at least 120lbs every time he fires an arrow. People clown so much on Dex-builds, but like... you need some serious muscle for some of the stuff they do.
I will also again bow at the altar of Vegalia's braid brushes. I would've lost my fucking mind drawing those braids.
