Sarpi Border Checkpoint: A Brutalist Checkpoint Watching Over the Border

This brutalist customs checkpoint was built in 2011 and it is located in Sarpi, Georgia. Overlooking the Black Sea, Sarpi Border Checkpoint with its cantilevering terraces watches over the Georgian border to Turkey. Multiple levels of the building overlook the water and the steep coastline. The architect of the checkpoint, Jürgen Mayer H. is a German architect famous for his postmodernist works like the Miami Museum Garage.

From our #BrutalNYC survey: One Police Plaza# ​The New York Police Department's​ headquarters at One Police Plaza was the heart of the Civic Center's postwar revitalization that also saw the creation of the Metropolitan Correctional Center, Murry Bergtraum High School, Chatham Green, Chatham Towers and a public plaza, all designed by Gruzen & Partners. Previously the Department had been located north of the civic center area, in a block-long Beaux-Arts building on Centre Street. To connect the new development with Park Row, the street was lowered, curving under the anchorage of the Brooklyn Bridge. Today this area has been closed to cars and surrounded by checkpoints in an attempt to secure the base of the bridge and One Police Plaza. Duane Street and New Chambers Street (through the Municipal Building) were also closed and paved with red brick. The new headquarters consisted of a​ brutalist​ ten-story red brick cube with a matrix of punched-out windows, sitting atop a multi-leveled base. The corners of the cube cantilever over the base, exposing the concrete structural elements. The mostly windowless bases house a garage, holding cells, and a shooting range. The surrounding landscaped plaza designed by architect M. “The sloping sides of Palika Kendra appear as though emerging from the ground, like tectonic plates forced from the earth’s mantle by tremendous force. Within the building sits the New Delhi Municipal Council, which originated from the Imperial Delhi Committee – formed to oversee the construction of Delhi as the new capital of India. The Palika Kendra Building is an expression of power, will, and strength, representing the urgency of Prime Minister Nehru’s desire to challenge received wisdom and entrenched design practice in order to forge a new vision of India.”

Completed in 1984 and designed by Kuldip Singh, who sadly passed away earlier this month due to COVID.
