also having a super cool super smart protagonist is fun, but if her love interests are this blindly and uncritically loyal/obsessed with her, it doesn't feel like a genuine commentary on bad romance writing. it's not really groundbreaking to have the victimized and powerless female lead become infatuated with the mc, who's presented as flawless and unable to truly do wrong simply because she has good intentions. she doesn't set out to Be A Hero, but the end result is the same and yuri is only given the depth of genuinely liking and being interested in another woman. and that's really cool! I love that! but if that's as far as the relationship goes, then it's just not enough and it falls far short of what she could be as a character, and the narrative falls flat in its failure to replace harmful romantic plot devices with interesting or insightful or even healthy ones

hmmmmm okay there actually is something to angel and buffy in season 3. but maybe that had more to do with her being the only thing that brings him back from primal madness and how he desperately said her name and got on his knees and wrapped his arms around her while weeping. when will a man do that to me challenge. what is going on in his head. this and evil obsessive angel are the only things that have made me enjoy this ship ahfvahda they were too in love and simple before

at some point melissa will have to confront the fact that she's completely on her own and is loved by nobody, not even her own family. that's no way to live. but until she can take control of the narrative, this is her life. and she's responding fairly to her brother and father being controlling and patronizing to her. also this was funny

i say this every single time i rewatch buffy but the way that the Soul works in there is so fucking funny. angels got a curse that restores his soul. sure ill take that. a moment of pure happiness will ruin it. ill buy that too. i will even believe that your first time having sex with someone you love could be that moment of pure happiness. but you cannot honestly tell me that that translates to “if he ever has an orgasm again he loses his soul” like. truly i think he could do whatever he wants forever and the fear of losing his soul would taint the happiness enough that it would never happen again. i know that im overanalyzing and intellectualizing too much and they needed the stipulation that he cant be with buffy again to create drama and angst but its just so duuuuumb sorry im shutting up.
