JOAN OF ARC EXECUTION SITE...

On May 30th, 1431, a nineteen year old girl known as Jeanne d'Arc- Joan of Arc- was burned at the stake at the old market place in medieval Rouen.

The theoretical charge against Joan was one of heresy but, truth be told, it was by this time as expedient for the French King, Charles VII, to be rid of her as much as it was for his English enemies, and their Burgundian satraps.

Joan had outlived her usefulness to Charles, and embarrassed the opposing English far too much. Captured by Burgundian forces in the spring of 1430 at the siege of Compiegene, she was sold to the English for 10,000 livres by Phillip III, Duke of Burgundy.

That same December, she was transferred to a prison in Rouen. The medieval city on the Seine was at that time the administrative capital and military headquarters on French soil of the English King, Henry VI.

Henry turned Joan over for trial to Bishop Cauchon, a true snake with a sceptre. The result was a foregone conclusion.

The cross in the first photograph marks the exact spot where this feared, obviously frightened nineteen year old girl ended her time on this earth. Looked at in any context, it was a sad, shabby, shameful and ghastly state of affairs...

'Good Omens', amusingly subtitled 'The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch', is the continuingly popular collaboration between English authors Terry Pratchett (1948 - 2015) and Neil Gaiman (b. 1960), published in 1990. Living far before the end of days - when the story is set - the eponymous 17th century witch recorded her 'Accurate Prophecies' in print, presently owned by her many times great -granddaughter. Nutter foresaw her own execution, knowing it was unavoidable. Hiding gunpowder and heavy duty nails in her petticoats, everyone surrounding her died as she burnt alive. ...A little vengeance for the ever persecuted witch. 📺: After talks of a film halt for the umpteenth time, 'Good Omens' has made it to the small screen. 23 May 1498, execution by burning of Italian Dominican friar and preacher Girolamo Savonarola. Denouncing clerical corruption, despotic rule and the exploitation of the poor. He prophesied the coming of a biblical flood, and reformation of the church. In September 1494, at the height of the invasion of French king Charles VIII, Savonarola’s prophecies struck a chord with the youth of Florence, who led a puritanical revolt against the ruling Medici’s; culminating in February 1497, in the ‘bonfires of the vanities’,when his supporters forcibly collected and burned thousands of works of art, and books in Florence. Excommunicated by the pope in May 1497, his supporters began to fade, and he was condemned, hanged, and burned in the main square of Florence on this day.
