It is glorious early summer in the Holarctic and Everywhere is full of these delightful cottagecore foraging vids of elderflower champagne and beech rose love cakes and it is FRIGID here in Aus the sun is GONE (don't talk to me NT and Queensland) it's EXACTLY cold enough to NOT SNOW.

All my seasonal inspo content is always fully 6months out of sync and it's just. Inconvenient. Haveta figure out what to do with a season all by myself without an Algorithm to give me hints/products to buy.

I've never seen an elderflower in my life.

(there are native 'elderberry' plants but they don't GROW HERE OK THEY GROW IN THE NICE PARTS OF THE COUNTRY)

Anytime there's talk of Van being in LA I'm reminded of when he was on Sunday Brunch and wouldn't try the avocado. He compared it to a bushtucker trial 😭 He wouldn't last out there 😂

Dofe anon back i got back yesterday around 4 and I was out like a light but I made my dad wake me up for the race coz the last time I slept through a race max dnfed and carlos won in aus and it was soooo worth it

You've regaled us well on the many flavors of bug based bushtucker, but I must ask which is the tastiest critter you've caught for yourself and misty?

If you mean bugs: probably witchetty grubs (scrambled eggs if cooked) or spiders and scorpions (fish with a slight umami flavour). If you batter and fry them they come out tasting like fish fingers.

Non-bugs: Dog meat, hands down. Dog meat is fucking delicious.

But as far as catching things goes, it'd be barramundi. Get a small one and pack it with lemon slices, salt and pepper, then inside and out rub in lemongrass, garlic powder, onion powder, mustard seed, lemon myrtle, native ginger, then add thin-sliced native fruits (fingerlimes work great). Tie the carcass closed and roast over a fire. The meat flakes apart and tastes fucking delicious.
