you really see the absolute degeneracy humanity can get to without religion in the numbers of people who genuinely believe that illnesses like cancer or dementia, or really any sort of degenerative illness, are situations wherein people should kill themselves, or should be encouraged to kill themselves rather than suffer it. the hypocrisy of the belief is rather notable when you compare a particularly intense, but not fatal, chronic illness, to something equivalent mentally, like severe depression, bipolar, borderline. in the same breath we will talk of how someone with a physical complication should be killed to spare them their difficulty and then tell the person with the similarly-crippling mental difficulty that death is never the answer. but worse than the hypocrisy is the callous indifference to the meaning of suffering. many hold it to be that illness or suffering rob you of dignity. but it doesn't. a person's mere existence gives them dignity. and frankly it makes me wonder if they have ever been around someone who's sick before, because they're really just like anyone else. yes, they are under a stressful time, they may be irritable or moody or weepy. but they can also be incredibly kind, selfless, patient, brave. it's like the idea that in a disaster situation people will kill each other to survive, when in reality, almost every time people do the opposite. disaster, illness, tragedy, suffering, tend to bring out not the worst in people, but the best. and even when they don't, they do reveal the truth of a person. going through this experience, and bearing witness to this experience, is infinitely valuable. humanity would be far worse off without it, and is worse off for ignoring it or dismissing it just because it's uncomfortable.

still thinking about the brainrot that fast fashion has caused in people, like i made this pair of pants that are black and white with a cool flowery design, and an acquaintance saw them and said "wow i'd pay like 20 dollars for you to make me a pair" and i could barely think with how utterly horrified i was at that; i told them that 20 dollars wouldn't even cover the materials, let alone the hours of work that went into cutting, sewing, ironing, hemming, altering, etc. they just had this look on their face when i told them that, when i said i wouldn't make them a pair for even 100 dollars because that was still way too low of an amount, a look that said "you're crazy for thinking that those cost 100 dollars" and maybe i am crazy but holy shit, 20 dollars for a pair of handmade, durable, lined pants fitted specifically to your measurements? 20 dollars for upwards of 60 hours of work? 20 dollars for several yards of high-quality fabric, thread, and buttons? 20 dollars???

Also increasingly aware that a LOT of people "manage" getting through the 40+ hour work week by sleeping less than is healthy and relying on stimulants like coffee and energy drinks to keep them going.

For people who are unwilling or unable to do this...work really does just dominate your life. Like we really should not have to rely on unhealthy practices just to have a social life or keep on top of housework or whatever.

I know I post about this a lot but I'm so TIRED all the time and it's just so depressing that this is how we're expected to spend the one life we have.
