#but I don’t like that my car has features dependent on subscription services
Text
I love using my new car I bought because you basically need a car in this country and then having the dashboard screen that is legally required because all cars in the US need to have backup cameras, and having that screen be difficult to navigate while driving bc you can’t just go by touch so you have to look at the screen which means you’re not looking at the road. And then I love getting home and seeing I got 3 new emails from different subscription services telling me my free trial has run out for their service that only works on that screen even though I literally never used any of them but was forced to opt in to free trials and to give them my email as a part of the car buying process for some reason

You say the MKVs have both audio & video. The data on the web site is the way the web site designers chose to put it there. If a web site offers its content in separate MP4s as audio without video & video without audio, there is nothing that any external application, VDH being just one such external application, can do.

Judge For Yourself
As this decade ends and a new one begins, I find myself waxing reflective, as I’m sure many of you are, about what gaming has brought us over the last ten years and where it’s poised to head next. Just to be clear, when I say what gaming has brought us, I don’t simply mean the new consoles and games that have come out during that time, but even more broadly the trends in game development on the one hand and in the gaming community on the other.
It’s also noteworthy that the 2010’s mark the first decade in human history where social media has been a prevalent part of our daily lives the entire time. The ability to share our interests and opinions with anyone anywhere is now a power in everyone’s hands. This has correlated with the growth of gaming, leading to the ability for the communities surrounding a game to support each other and inform the public at large about every facet of a given game much more easily, making games more approachable than ever before. In this respect, the ubiquitous nature of social media has impacted gaming for the better.
Unfortunately, this is not the limit to the impact such outlets have been able to have. With the ease of ability to share your opinion with anyone around the world has naturally come the ability for negative opinions to be disseminated far more easily and widely than ever before, too. While everyone is certainly within their right to avail themselves of that resource and share their feelings when they don’t enjoy something, or at least are let down somewhat by it, it is to me quite another matter if one is to deliberately encourage negativity in others in the gaming community, whether out of seeking validation they are “right” or more simply for the sheer act of garnering attention toward their existence and validating them as a person more generally. With our lives being limited in length and with there being enough daily sources in said lives to incur negative feelings from for any of us, I am of the opinion that nobody who makes their modus operandi encouraging negativity deserves the dignity of our attention, lest we encourage more of the same.
Yet, clearly my opinion doesn’t seem to be shared by as many as I wish it was. Everywhere you look, the monster of toxicity now runs rampant. While that expression may have preceeded this decade, this is the one in which it truly manifested itself into the household expression it is today. We now exist in a state where a single cut feature by a given developer to make room for a newer idea within a given series or trying to do anything different in general will be met with angry backlash online by people who denounce the game in question as “trash” and the developer as “dead” or deserving of going under.
Claiming any given game’s quality in such a derogatory way and wishing those who made it would go out of business for offending our delicate sensibilities as consumers when they put a great deal of time and effort into such projects and when their failure would hurt their livelihood and that of the families they are supporting would be excessive enough even if it were the case that those making such statements had all played the games in question in any particular case. I probably don’t need to tell you that this is rarely the case, however. A great deal of this kind of vitriol often comes before a game has even been released, with those angered professing a certainty about how series/developer-destroying a new aspect of the story or gameplay will be that betrays a great deal of hubris on their part, a hubris divorced of any experiential basis. This has grown to the extent we now find games being judged on their graphical quality in advance of release, in spite of the fact that graphics are one of the last things finished in the development of any video game.
Even once games have come out and are deservedly open to full critique born of playing them, it is often the case that those condemning them haven’t even played the titles in question still. Many who claim they have are curiously absent the kind of specific, detail-oriented knowledge one would expect anyone who has first-hand experience to be able to provide. Others will admit they haven’t but claim they are informed enough because of seeing the reviews and various critiques on social media that they “know” it’s quality in essentially the same way as anyone else who has played it. Any equivocation between experiencing a thing for itself and experiencing someone else’s opinion of a thing as essentially the same thing is a false equivocation, especially when someone else’s opinion isn’t even based on actual experience of a thing, as is so often found to be the case right now with the gaming content in question.
I hardly need point you to specific examples of this, because if you are interested enough in gaming to be reading this post, then you know the sort to which I’m referring. There are any number of YouTube “content creators” - and I use that in the loosest conceivable sense of the label - who have clearly made their entire approach to content based around promoting and fanning the flames further of any current trend of toxicity within the gaming community. A facade of “concern about the creation of better games and better practices by game studios” scarcely hides the interest in drawing the sheer number of hits negative content is liable to incur for them, a likelihood which I’m not naive enough to believe isn’t something they aren’t aware of in advance and actively working to solicit. One has to wonder, at a certain point, how many of these creators even believe in the viewpoint they draw attention to, or how much they truly care about games in general, for that matter. I’ll not be naming any such “content creators” here, as I feel no obligation to draw the curious toward giving their content more attention when it has already garnered more than it deserves, but as I said, if you’re reading this...you know the kind I’m talking about.
As a snowball starts an avalanche, so too has it become the case that these specific instances of toxicity create a greater issue than what to me seems really called for in most situations as well, as in recent time I’ve noticed a new trend in more offical gaming publications online picking up on these cases and reporting it as a newsworthy story, rather than such controversies staying on the forums they used to be relegated to. Forum users’ message board comments and their online handles are now even being quoted in stories about such controversies in a manner not dissimilar in tone from what one might expect of the eyewitness of a car accident, though I have genuinely seen such stories about the latter published with less somber an overtone than stories about the unfair cost of some DLC.
This state of affairs is so ridiculous to my perception as to be laughable, but for the fact that its ever-growing and tangible impact on the gaming community is so corrosive. For a community centered around a medium we seek out and take part in to feel delighted and entertained, we have a preoccupation now with relishing in feeling hate toward various aspects of it, or at least in watching others do so, which is hardly better as it is encouraging such behavior by gifting it the dignity of attention. Look at the number of views and comments any given negative article or video on a controversy has, and compare that to the aggregate of those on anything related to more positive content concerning the same game, or simply news about the game in general which is neutral in judgement, and the difference will tell you the tale in where we currently sell our time and attention.
I’ve said before in this blog and I will say it again: my goal here is to promote positive content in relation to being a gamer. However, considering my interest in promoting a healthy positivity in the gaming community - one not irrationally positive but not irrationally negative, either - and looking forward to the next decade and what changes it will bring to gaming, I felt compelled to speak up and pass my indictment on the current toxic culture of the gaming community. We should be ashamed things are in this state, and we should all do what we can to put a stop to it. Again, not a stop to any criticism - that is needed, and vital at that - but the excessive, unproductive and profiteering-oriented hate-mongering that is so prolific.
A simple way to start is to abstain from watching videos of that nature and checking out other kinds of content which are clear from the surface to be promoting that kind of toxicity. Beyond that and more simply, even, we can also just discuss what we love about games more. It’s not that we don’t still talk this way about them, but we certainly could stand to do it more. The more we vote on the tone of content we would like to see with what we are all choosing to talk about, the more we discourage the toxicity that divides and corrodes this community.
Further, I would encourage more people to depend less on reviews and try out titles for themselves. Borrow from friends or check out titles through one of the various subscription services available these days if you are wary of paying the full cost for a title you may not enjoy; there are plenty of options that minimize the cost to you as a gamer to get the most accurate assessment of how quality a game is to you: first-hand experience. I. The end, no reviewer is ever going to have their finger on thhe pulse of how you would feel about a game as much as you will have yourself playing it, so don’t let these people decide for you how good something is to you.
In the end, I’m essentially just asking that we try to be a more happy and thankful community around this medium that gives us so much reason to feel that way toward it. I hope you’ll do your own part, and together that we can make the next decade of gaming an even brighter one for all of us. Let’s make it so when we look back at the end of the 20’s and what gamers were like during it, we can say unequivocally that we’re a gamer and proud of it, not just out of love of games, but knowing what that represents in the quality of tthe people who play them. I look forward to being there with all of you through it.

A Peek Into the Indie Writer World - Part III: Output Options
Many apologies, this was posted elsewhere weeks ago and I missed getting it up here.
Once you’ve chosen the indie writer path, you need to decide what products or outputs you want to provide. Common options include print, e‑book, audio book, and online serial. There are advantages and disadvantages to each, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Looking at your target audience to see how they prefer their media, and deciding what you can afford to spend on your launch are good starting points.
Indie publishing doesn’t have to break the bank, but there are some expenses; these will depend on your skill-set and the products you’re creating. Even if you’re able to do all the technical work yourself, you’ll need to buy an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) for each publication or version of a publication.
Print Run vs Print on Demand
If you decide you want to offer a print edition of your book, there are still a lot of choices to make. Do you want hardcover or paperback? If paperback, do you want mass market (sometimes called pocketbook) or the larger trade size? Do you want regular print and large print options? Are you going to do a print run or go with print on demand (POD)?
Print Run
In traditional publishing, many copies of a book are printed all at one time. This is a print run. The goal is to sell all or most of the print run. If a book’s print run sells out early enough in its publication life, it will go back for a second printing. Indie writers can duplicate this process, working directly with printing companies to produce hardcover or paperback books, paying for the print run and hoping to sell enough to break even or make a profit.
An advantage of a print run is that it’s easier to sell something that people can take with them right then and there. There are also some nice finishing features that a print run can make available that don’t exist in print on demand, such as a variety of bindings and maps on the inside front cover and/or endpaper.
Each printed format of the book (hardcover, paperback, large print, etc) requires its own run. If you’re planning multiple print formats, or if you don’t have investors or ready money to cover the outlay, a print run may not be the best fit for you.
Indie writers who go exclusively with a print run, rely on hand-selling their book at conventions or events, and are directly responsible for all sales. Independent book stores may carry your books on consignment, but it can be very tough to get big chain stores to carry your books outside of their distribution channels.
Print on Demand (POD)
Print on demand is a publishing model where physical books are individually printed as they are ordered. Modern technology has made POD an affordable and common option. If you order a book from an online retailer, and the book is scheduled to take a week or two to arrive, odds are good that it’s POD book. POD printers can provide hardcover and multiple paperback formats.
POD printers often work with both print and e-book outputs. Many have arrangements for distribution to retailers, national and world-wide, which can take some of the burden of selling off the writer’s plate. You must follow designated formatting standards if you want your book to qualify for distribution. This is a detail-focused task that results in a professional product.
Unless you’re buying additional services, POD has a very low cost to the author. You will need to buy a proof of the book, a copy for you to review and make sure it printed properly, before it will be released to the general public. You may need to make changes and order an additional proof to confirm the end product is as expected.
Once you’re happy with the output, you can order your own mini print run of ten or twenty books to hand-sell at readings or events. There’s usually a price break at certain levels, making it worthwhile to buy a larger number, but the per-book price will not be as low as it is with a regular print run.
A disadvantage with POD is that many online retailers have contracts with various printing shops around the country (or even the world), ensuring the book is printed closer to the delivery address. These shops may not have the same quality or standards, and indie writers can’t possibly know how that quality compares. Like a print run, it can be very difficult to get your books carried in brick and mortar stores, but big chain retailers may have them available for online ordering.
E-book
Electronic books, or e-books, are one of the easiest ways to dip your toes into the indie pool. Many e-book providers also offer distribution (sometimes referred to as aggregation). To qualify for wide distribution, your end product will need to meet specific criteria ensuring that it looks professionally produced.
There are many advantages of going the e-book route. It’s relatively simple to set up and produce. Depending on your skill set, and willingness to work through the technical elements, this can cost as little as $25 (the cost for an ISBN). Some e‑book production companies provide a free ISBN; just read the fine print to ensure you aren’t going to regret not being the owner of that number.
E-books become available relatively quickly, often the same day you complete the publishing process. Because of the low cost of production, these can be priced low enough that curious readers may be willing to take a risk on someone they’ve never read or heard of before.
A disadvantage with e-books is the difficulty in standing out from the deluge of e‑books published daily. While libraries are starting to carry e-books, it’s not universal, making this a tough bottleneck to get through. Not all audiences have embraced e‑books, so it’s critical that you know your audience’s preference.
Audio Book
Audio book is an output I’ve researched significantly but haven’t been able to provide. I have friends with visual disabilities who would benefit, and I know several people who enjoy listening to books on the bus or long car rides.
Like a print run, audio book has more up front expenses than other outputs. You can expect to pay your voice actors at least $200 to $400. If you’re doing your own recording, be careful not to over-estimate your ability or your equipment. Theatrical or voice training can definitely help you out, but they don’t guarantee a successful product. The reading quality and audio quality will make or break your audio book.
Online Serial
Online serial publication is another easy place to start, especially if you can stick to a schedule. It doesn’t require an ISBN, but it does require participation in a service that is set up for subscriptions and donations. If you’re tech savvy enough, perhaps you can program this into your own site. Most writers use something like Patreon or Wattpad.
This route is still relatively new in the industry. The advantage is that writers can more directly connect with their audience. Some writers use this to gain a following, posting short stories and teasers for free to draw people in, while providing subscribers regular chapters and higher level content.
Disadvantages can include difficulty in getting enough traffic, the pressure of providing routine content for subscribers, and random changes in terms of service (a problem Patreon has had several times in the last year). Some writers don’t feel this counts as truly publishing, but if you are providing content to readers, it does fit the definition.
On the surface these options can seem really intimidating. If you’re finding yourself overwhelmed, pick one to focus on at a time. There’s no reason you can’t roll out various editions as you get more comfortable with the formats. Many writers provide only one format, and that’s fine too. Going indie, means you can do what works for you.

Marketing For Self-Published Authors and Artists (March 2019)
(This column is posted at www.StevenSavage.com and Steve's Tumblr.  Find out more at my newsletter.)
So as promised, every few months I’m going to update my findings on marketing for indies.  Most of this is oriented towards self-published authors like myself, but a lot of it should help artists too.
The Core Principle: The Web Of Connections
To promote yourself your various activities, giveaways, social media, and so on need to connect and reinforce each other.  If a new book comes out, promote it on your website and give away a few copies in your newsletter.  If you’re speaking on art, give out bookmarks with links to your website.  Everything ties together.
This does make finding what works a bit challenging, so I take these steps:
Do what is easy, like cross-posting sales and stuff among my social media.  Hey, it’s easy.  Then I monitor what seems to work.
Do what seems rational because let’s face it, this is complicated.  Also see if there’s any useful results that tell you what to do or what not to do.
Advance my marketing with small experiments to see what gets results.  Usually that takes a month or two to show, so I tend to do my experiments every month or every other month.
Record what I find from above.  What do you think this post is?
Over time you’ll find what works for you, what doesn’t, and how elements interact.  It might help to keep a list like this!
Have A Website
Have a website, period. A website is a place you can send people to that acts as a "hub" for your marketing efforts. It doesn't have to be complex (I've got some tips below), it has to be a place that acts as a hub for finding out more about you. The goal of a website is to have a one-stop-show for people to come to for information, and leave from to go to your various portfolios, books, social media, etc.
Follow these steps:
Get a domain name (networksolutions.com, tierra.net are recommended). Make sure the name is unique, fits you, and can be re-purposed if your plans change (FrankDoesArt.com is a bit specific, but FrankGetsCreative.com is more general).
Set up a website. Most people I know use www.dreamhost.com or www.wix.com. Just start with one page to make it easy - I've seen successful authors whose page is a blurb and a list of books.
A fast way to do it is buy a domain and redirect it to one of your social media accounts or a portfolio setup (like Twitter or LinkedIn).  You can build the site later.
Link to all your books, art, portfolio, and social media from here.
This website should be mentioned in your books, social media, etc.
Link to all your social media from the website – LinkedIn, Goodreads, whatever.  Well, whatever is appropriate, like maybe no one wants your photo collection of antique pots on that photo sharing site.
Other things to add:
A schedule of speaking engagement.
Reviews of your books.
Testimonials.
Helpful downloads - like character sheets, guides, etc.
Have Appropriate Social Media
Social media is a troublesome subject. Yes, it can let you market - or be annoying. Yes it can let you meet people - or it can waste time. However, done right it's a great way to connect with people.
Your social media should always link back to your website and in many cases, your other social media. This helps create a "web" of connections, so people are able to go to one social media source, find your others, and of course buy your stuff.
My takes on social media in rough order are:
Twitter: Twitter, for it's many flaws, has a lot of use, its simple, and with lists and filtering (and learning when to ignore it) you can meet authors, promote yourself, and be found. I'd determine what approach you want to use (from marketing to just goofing off) and do it.
LinkedIn: You should have a LinkedIn profile anyway, but how much of your "creative" life you want to share or link to depends on your goals and personal image. I also will say if you use LinkedIn don't forget all the great posting and stuff you can do there, and the communities.
Instagram and other photo-sharing sites: Some people use this to promote their work, others use it as a sort of photoblog. I'm mixed on it myself.
Facebook: Facebook keeps having issues, but it helps to have a presence. I'd keep an author page on it at the very least and see how you engage.
Amazon Author Site: Set up your Amazon Author Site at Author Central.  This also can be a place to point your web domain.
By the way, a good way to manage social media in one go is www.Hootsuite.com.
Have A Blog
Blogs are ways to post thoughts, essays, and more, turning your web presence into a kind of personal magazine/announcement/discussion board. Most authors use them, though at various rates of usage, from constant posts to "occasional speaking updates."
A blog is usually part of your author website, and thus is another reason to come there - and to go and check out your work and your other media. Most blog setups can act as your author page as well (which is what I do).
I use blogs to:
Give weekly updates on myself.
Post various essays and thoughts.
Review or promote interesting things.
In a few cases, blog posts then became other books, or I round them up to publish free "compendiums."
You can set up blogs at the following sites, with various advantages and limits. Some allow you to use your own domain name, some don't.
Most webhosts.
Wordpress.com
Blogspot.com
A few techniques:
You can get a domain and just point it at your blog or a similar site (like your Tumblr) and save time.
Some authors and artists do blog tours where they post across each other's blogs.
If you have related social media accounts (LinkedIn, Tumblr, etc.) consider posting your blog entries to all of them when appropriate. Just make sure they redirect to your site.
Set up an RSS feed (or find it's address in a standard setup) and put a link on your blog. I also recommend www.feedburner.comdespite it being sort of static by now.
Mailchimp.com and some other mail software programs let people subscribe to a blog feed so they get email updates. You can also load those with helpful extras and information.
An important caveat - if you're a prolific writer, you have to find the blogging/writing balance. It's not an easy call because a few long blog posts can take as much time to set up as a small fiction piece. In some cases small books may be like blog posts so you have to ask “write a book or write a set of blog posts.”  I cover that more later.
Have A Newsletter
A newsletter is the way to engage with readers and keep people informed, as well as give them cool reviews, interesting updates, and more. In some ways it's like a mailed blog, but I separate them as a newsletter is more focused and like an update, whereas blogs can be more freeform. If you don't do a blog, do a newsletter, and if you only have time for one do the newsletter.
The ruler of newsletters is www.mailchimp.com, which has an amazing free service and reasonable paid services.
Make sure that your newsletter subscription form(s) are linked to from as much social media as possible and, of course, your website.
Some newsletter tips:
Don't overdo it or underdo it - I do it twice a month or so.
Find a "feel" for your newsletter - a roundup, personal, chatty, serious, etc. Judge what works.
Include any vital updates about your work. Link to your blog, new books, cool things.
Give away "Lead Magnets" - basically free stuff like samples, an occasional free book copy, downloadable cool stuff, etc.
Use it to promote other cool things - help folks out.
Remember that most newsletter software gives you all sorts of statistics and data - you can use this to improve reaching people!
Physical Media
Many authors and artists give away cards, bookmarks, etc.  I find these different giveaways vary in effectiveness, so I’m not sure how well they work for me or you.  However, it doesn’t stop me from doing them as they’re easy, and sometimes expected.  I also figure saturating the world with references to my work helps.
The one challenge is that this costs money, and you may not want to spend money on business cards, bookmarks, etc.  So you want to balance your choices.
Here’s what I try and what I find works:
Business Cards – These are a must if you’re serious, and the only physical media I can truly say that about.  Business Cards are cheap to get, easy to give out, and even expected.  Most print shops and office supply stores have quick options.
Bookmarks – This is popular among the book crowd for obvious reasons.  I’m not sure how well they work, but they do make it easy to set out information, give them away in panels, leave at interested shops, etc.  They can be a bit pricey depending on the deal you swing,
Mini-pictures – I’ve seen artists give away small cards with their art and contact information, sort of a sample/bookmark/business card fusion.  This may be worth trying.
For printed bookmarks and the like I recommend www.clubflyers.com.
I always have business cards with me, keep some bookmarks in my car, and take bookmarks to any events I speak at.
Giveaways And Promotionals (Mostly Authors)
A great way to get people's attention is to give out stuff like free books, extras, samples, and more. With these properly done (and linked back to other works), its a great way to get attention, meet people, and of course get sales.
There's two services I recommend for authors.  For artists you may have to look for other methods.
Prolificworks.com - having both free and subscription modes, it lets you give away work and join (or create) promotionals. The paid version lets you tie giveaways into your mailing list as well. It does get a bit pricey beyond the Free level ($20 to $50 a month), so I recommend paid tiers for serious authors nly.
www.bookfunnel.com - Is a cheap ($20 a year to start) way to do book giveaways in a variety of formats, and higher tiers include features like Prolificworks.com. I'm fond of the starter tier as its a great way to make book giveaways easier (and if you don't want to host your giveaways).
To make these work you have to obviously be dedicated to it and work out strategies. I use them to:
Give away free stuff and samples to my newsletter subscribers.
Give away a few copies of new books via Prolificworks.com
Have promotional giveaways (often samples) that people can sign up to my newsletter to get.
I join groups on Prolificworks.com to do team giveaways.
I use both - Instafreebie lets me set up easy giveaways, and Prolificworks gives me all sorts of options.
If you use KDP, there's a KDP Exclusive you can use for eBooks. In exchange for making your work exclusive with Amazon, you get some tools to set up sales and giveaways.  It’s easy for starting authors.
Have A Portfolio
If you're a visual artist of any kind, have a portfolio. Put it on your website, use a social media site like Deviantart.com, whatever. People want to see your work and maybe buy it, so make it easy to do. If you take commissions, it's pretty much a way to market yourself.
Non-visual artists like authors may want a portfolio as well. This would contain:
Cover art.
Sample works.
Free giveaways.
Summaries of your work (with links to purchase it). For instance, I have a press website a lot like this.
Do Series
If you're doing fiction, you probably already have a series in mind. If your books are non-fiction, you may want to group them into series, because various bookselling sites will remind people that "X book is part of Y" series.  If you’re an artist, this may help as well.
It's near-free advertisement.
My general finding is that series help get people’s attention.  If they like something, they check the series.  If they like the series idea but not a specific piece, they may check the rest of the series.
It also shows commitment.  If you’ve got a series, you’ll be around.
I do think it takes time for a series to “take off.”  Once it starts getting attention and people buy other books, then they get more recommendations, more attention, etc.
Calculated Distribution (Authors)
This part is pretty much only for authors – and for book distribution.
For print books, your usual choices are Amazon and IngramSpark (or IngramSpark via Lulu).  Amazon doesn’t charge, the other services do, but bookstores don’t always like to stock Amazon books as it’s a competitor.
For ebooks, your choices are:
Go with Amazon’s KDP Select, where you only go through Amazon but get marketing tools like sales.  Amazon is the majority of the market, so if you go Amazon its easier.
Distribute incredibly widely.  This takes time, and you don’t get Amazon’s marketing tools, but you get the chance to make more sales.  Some authors I know find they sell more books outside of Amazon, but I haven’t figured out any rules or principles to this.
If you go broad here’s my take
Draft2Digital is the easiest way to go broad, but only does eBooks.  I also recommend managing your Amazon account separately.  Draft2Digital doesn’t have the broadest range, but it’s free (taking a cut of your sales) and very, very well done.
Smashwords is also free, but takes a larger cut and doesn’t have the extras of Draft2Digital.  It does get into a few unusual areas of distribution.
Lulu.com will do full service, but partners with Ingrahm, and there are charges.
Ingrahm is full service as well, and charges.  It’s probably a better choice than Lulu these days.
Publish Lots Of Stuff
Like it or not your goal as a creator is to be noticed so people get ahold of your work and benefit from it.  This means that you may need to create lots of works to get attention – or use work that you aren’t making public to do the same.
For instance, I realized that a lot of my blog ideas were better off as books – or could be turned into books.  There was far more benefit to turning certain ideas into small books (or expanding existing work into books) than letting things sit.  Some things just work better as a book anyway, and I have more works that people can get their hands on.
(Plus, the polishing that goes into a book made them, honestly, higher quality.)
If you’re an artist it’s probably the same thing, depending on your market.  If you have lots of different things to sell and buy and do you increase your chance to get more sold.
Advertising (Mostly for Authors)
I’ve used both Google ads and Amazon for books, though it’s been awhile since I’ve done Google (and I may want to try again).  I have done a lot with Ams, or Amazon Marketing Services.
AMS lets you set up promotional ads to appear during searches, and you can set up keywords, target them, and even decide what to pay for a clickthrough.  It’s a pretty advanced tool, and though it obviously only targets Amazon, that’s a pretty big market!  The challenge is that you have to figure out the right words, monitor progress (to avoid overspending or waste), and tweak marketing for each book.
I’ve found it effective, but it takes a lot of work.  What I do is update AMS every month or so with new terms, shut off ones that aren’t working, and try to get an idea of what works.  You can download data from each ad you set up, and then make a new ad with just the data that worked.  You honestly need to start with 100-200 search terms to get it working.
AMS works, but it takes effort – and obviously you pay for ads even if you don’t sell anything.  It’s a good advanced practice.
More To Come
So these are just what I'm doing now (and what I wrote up, I'm sure I forgot a few things). I'm always trying different promotional efforts and other ways to help people find my books.

FIXD Review 20201– Is It Worth Buying?
People who use cars many times face some common issues and have to go for servicing or inspection. I had to visit car mechanic shops frequently for my car’s inspection that takes huge time and money. To prevent all these situations, I started using a device called FIXD. It is a time-consuming and cost-effective solution to find out the car issues.
Any car can be a smart vehicle. That’s the appeal of Fixd, a simple device that can identify information ranging from when you need to bring your car in for maintenance to why that check-engine light just came on.
This device finds out the common problems, shows warnings about technical issues, and provides a detailed analysis. FIXD keeps the internal workings of the car up to date. It finds out the issues and works much better than the mechanics. See the FIXD Reviews and get the best car diagnostic. In this article, I will share how FIXD helps me.
FIXD Reviews
Gone are the days when you had to use tape to cover up the check-engine light that can be quite annoying. OBD II systems diagnose that problem and fix it. One particular apex scanner has our attention — the FIXD OBD-II scanner. We need to know why car enthusiasts are going crazy about it. So let’s get down to business.
What is FIXD?
It was founded by Georgia Tech students, Rachel Ford, and John Gattuso. On September 18, 2014, FIXD Automotive Inc. was filed as Delaware Corporation with its headquarters in Atlanta.
FIXD is an OBD2 system scanner that works with a mobile app to diagnose the car’s health. This innovative gadget can translate over 7000 error codes and alerts for the car’s real-time issues. It shows the reason behind why the check engine light is on and its intensity also.
After FIXD performs a thorough diagnosis of your vehicle, the gadget displays a report on the status of your vehicle and gives suggestions on how you can fix it. A notable feature is that FIXD translates error codes into understandable terms.
You no longer have to deal with technical jargon or get confused when the check engine light comes on as FIXD OBD-2 scanner will tell you what to do. FIXD also offers more information on when you need to schedule for a car maintenance service. Ideally, FIXD transforms your vehicle into a smart car.
FIXD provides the information and results in simple and understandable terms. With its continuous monitoring, it becomes easy to find the issues and estimated repairing cost. The FIXD Reviews show how effectively this technological hardware and software combination detects car problems.

Features of Fixd
It won’t be a wise decision to get a product before knowing its features and activities. This is why, below this FIXD Reviews section, I’m adding some features of this device. So that it could support you in making a fruitful decision.
Identifies Your Car Issues:
Fixd is a very smart device that easily identifies the problem of your car and other related issues. The manufacturer of Fixd devices claims that it’s able to identify more than 6000 issues of your car.
It’ll tell you every single issue of your car and also inform you if you can fix it by yourself or need a mechanic. From the day I got this OBD-II device, my car repair cost reduced to half what I usually spent.
Cost Estimates:
If unfortunately, your car has an accident and you need to repair it. What would you do? Usually, you’ll go to a car shop and look for the parts and their price. Then you may also go to another shop to verify the prices. It’s a lengthy matter which makes you frustrated.
But there is the easiest solution that you can only have with Fixd device. The device has an outstanding feature that estimates your lowest possible cost by using your location or zip code.
Reminder for Maintenance:
Different cars have different maintenance policies according to their manufacturer. But it’s quite hard for anybody to remember when your care needs maintenance as per the manufacturer’s recommendation.
Here comes the Fixd device that does the job for you. It will remind you when your car exactly needs maintenance. It’ll send you the notification on your phone if there is any maintenance needed, such as oil change, check your tires, brake pads, etc.
Vehicle History:
In your childhood, you might see your father, mother, or any other, note down a detailed log after they drove. In that time they actually store manually on a notepad depending on how far they come.
But now in this era, you don’t have to do such things if you have a device like Fixd. It records every single data and allows the user to use the data whenever you need it.
Protection:
By using a fixd device you can protect your car and yourself as well. Before starting your journey, you can quickly scan to perceive the state of your car. It’ll help you to detect the problems of your car if there are any. So you don’t have to face any kind of unwanted issues in the middle of your journey.
Multi-Vehicle Control:
By using the Fixd device advance sensor, you can remotely observe the status of your other cars. This is such an amazing feature offer provided by Fixd device. Because of the Fixd device, I can check the updates of my wife and son’s car’s health remotely.
Fixd Premium
After signing up for Fixd premium, you will get access to additional features which are:
Confirmed Fix and Cost. It helps you avoid any scams you might get yourself into by telling you exactly how to fix the issue and how much it would cost you.
Issue Commonality. It tells you how common or rare your problem might be, so you always know whats going on when going into mechanic shops.
Mechanic Hotline. You can use this hotline to ask them what type of oil to buy, which spark plugs to use, etc. Their experts are available from Monday to Saturday.
Emissions Pre-Check. This feature lets you check your emissions from the comfort of your home, so you know if everything is ok or not before the official test.
How To Cancel Fixd Premium?
If you are not happy with the premium features, you can always cancel it. You can cancel your premium subscription and auto-renewal.
Specification of Fixd DeviceHow Does Fixd Work?
FIXD comes with a modern application to diagnose the vehicle condition and detect mechanical origins issues. It works with BlueTooth and the OBD2 system code reader. This scanning tool effectively detects car failures, accesses the internal registry, and breakdowns. After completing the scanning, it transfers the data to the app with the car’s real-time condition.

America Makes Aircraft Carriers, China Makes Money
— Fred Reed | Anti-Empire | May 20, 2021
Tumblr media
First, America increasingly relies on strong-arm tactics instead of competence. For example, in the de facto 5G competition, Washington cannot offer Europe a better product at a better price, so it forbids European countries to buy from China. The US cannot compete with China in manufacturing, so it resorts to a trade war. The US cannot make the crucial EUV lithography equipment to make advanced semiconductors, as neither can China, but it can forbid ASML, the Dutch company, from selling to China. Similarly, the US cannot compete with Russia in the price of natural gas to Europe, so by means of sanctions it seeks to keep Europe from buying from Russia. This is not reassuring.
Second, the Chinese are a commercial people, agile, fast to market, cutthroat, known for this throughout Asia. America is a bureaucratized military empire, torpid by comparison. America has legacy control over a few important technologies, most notably the crucial semiconductor field and the international financial system. Washington is using these to try to cripple China’s advance.
A consequence has been a realization by the Chinese that America is not a competitor but an enemy, and a subsequent explosion of investment and R&D aimed at reducing dependence on American technology. There is the well-known 1.4 trillion-dollar five-year plan to this end. One now encounters a flood of stories about advances in tech “to which China has intellectual-property rights” or similar wording.
They seem deadly serious about this. Given that Biden couldn’t tell a transistor from an ox cart, I wonder whether he realizes that every time the US pushes China to become independent in x, American firms lose the Chinese market for X, and later get to compete with Chinese X in the international market. Anyway, give Trump his due. He lit this fuse.
A few snippets
Tumblr media
Prototype of China’s 385 mph maglev train
The above beast, developed entirely in China, is the first to use high-temperature superconducting magnets to keep the train floating just above the rails. HTSC magnets are a Big Deal because they can achieve superconductivity using liquid nitrogen as coolant instead of liquid helium for classic superconductivity, this costing, say the Chinese, a fiftieth of the price of using helium. The use of HTSC is very, very slick. The train will extensively use carbon-fiber materials to keep weight down, suggesting that the Chinese cannot distinguish between a train and an airplane.
Asia Times “China’s Hydrogen Dream is taking Shape in Shandong”
“A detailed pilot plan being worked out to transform Shandong, a regional industrial powerhouse, into a “hydrogen society” holds out much hope of delivering on the green promise.”
The article, hard to summarize in a sentence, is worth reading. As so often, the Chinese do things, try things, while the US talks, riots, imposes sanctions, sucks its thumb, and spends grimly on intercontinental nuclear bombers.
“Huawei is Developing Smart Roads Instead of Smart Cars”
“Multiple sensors, cameras, and radars embedded in the road, traffic lights, and street signs help the bus to drive safely, while it in turn transmits information back to this network-“
“Quantum Cryptography Network Spans 4,600 Km in China”
Quantum Key Distribution, QKD, allows unhackable communications. China read Ed Snowden’s book on NSA’s snooping, realized it had a problem, and set out to correct it. If this spreads to other countries—see below—much of the world could go black to American intel agencies.
The Chinese may have thought of this.
“…colleagues will further expand the network by working with partners in Austria, Italy, Russia and Canada. The team is also developing low-cost satellites and ground stations for QKD.”
The last sentence is interesting. If China begins selling genuinely secure commo gear abroad, it is going to make a lot of intel agencies very unhappy. Did I mention that the Chinese are a commercial people?
Further:
“Chinese scientists achieve quantum information masking, paving way for encrypted communication application.”
My knowledge of this might rise to the level of blank ignorance after a good night’s sleep and three cups of coffee. However, the achievement made the American technical press, and suggests Chinese seriousness about gaining privacy.
The video below shows how China constructs high-speed rail lines as if painting a stripe on a highway. Since they can’t innovate, they have to get by with inventing things.
China to Europe rail freight: “Over 10,000 trains and 927,000 containers were forwarded via the China-EU-China route in 2020, China Railways has announced. The current volume of traffic has grown by 98.3% year-to-year, covering 21 countries and 92 cities in Europe.”
America makes aircraft carriers. China sells stuff.
NikkeiAsia: “What China’s Rapidly Expanding Nuclear Industry Means for the West”
One Chinese reactor in Pakistan just went live, with another expected in a few months. Says Nikkei, “The Karachi reactor is just the latest of these to come onstream, with the World Nuclear Organization listing a dozen different projects at the development or planning stage across a dozen countries from Argentina to Egypt in its recent survey. Many more are under discussion.”
In addition, says Nikkei, China intends to have the whole industry from technology to materials indigenous to China and outside of American sanctions. See above, about driving China to make things.
First China-Built DRAM Chip Reaches Market DRAM, dynamic random-access memory, appears in almost everything electronic and is a juicy market. Chang Xin Memory, which makes it, redesigned it slightly to remove American technology. If Chang Sin can ramp up volume, which has yet to be established, guess what foreign companies won’t sell much of in China any more.
Tumblr media
Pingtang Bridge, recently opened. Well over a thousand feet high
Even in my short two weeks recently in China, I saw that the Chinese do not believe in vertical motion. An American, encountering a mountain, would, sensibly enough, go up and over. This is not the Chinese way. They go through. Similarly, on finding a valley, they do not go down and up. They go across. There may be some genetic abnormality behind this, or maybe interbreeding with space aliens. But it results in hellacious bridges.
“Is China Emerging as the World Leader in AI?”
“Summary. China is quickly closing the once formidable lead the U.S. maintained on AI research. Chinese researchers now publish more papers on AI and secure more patents than U.S. researchers do. The country seems poised to become a leader in AI-empowered…”
Some argue that Chinese patents are of low quality. Maybe so. But don’t bet the college funds.
“China begins construction of world’s longest superconducting cable project”
“China’s first 35 kV high-temperature superconducting cable demonstration project has started construction by State Grid in Shanghai and it is expected to be completed by the end of the year. This is the world’s largest transmission capacity, the longest distance, 2000A current the highest commercial 35 kV superconducting cable project.”
Regarding the 5G War Trump could have bought 5G from Huawei, gotten a sweetheart deal, great prices, factories in America, and so on. Instead he banned Huawei from the US and then twisted arms of the vassal states of Europe. Thus neither America or Europe has the service, but China is rolling it out fast. Brilliant, Don. This gives China a running start on smart factories, smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and the like.
Tumblr media
“An almost entirely automated port in China, during unload of a container ship.“
America talks about 5G, China uses it.
NikkeiAsia: “The port is an example of how operator China Merchants Group has been working to automate and mechanize more operations using ultrafast fifth-generation wireless technology. By developing innovative ways to run the port as efficiently as possible, the company aims to accelerate overseas expansion.”
Aviation Week “Face It: The J-20 is a Fifth Generation Fighter”
Says AvWeek: “Clearly, Chengdu’s engineers understand the foundation of fifth-generation design: the ability to attain situational awareness through advanced fused sensors while denying situational awareness to the adversary through stealth and electronic warfare. The J-20 features an ambitious integrated avionics suite consisting of multispectral sensors that provide 360-deg. coverage. This includes a large active, electronically scanned array radar designed by the 14th Research Institute, electro-optical distributed aperture system, electro-optical targeting system, electronic support measures system and possibly side-array radars.
“In a 2017 CNTV interview, J-20 pilot Zhang Hao said: “Thanks to the multiple sensors onboard the aircraft and the very advanced data fusion, the level of automation of J-20 is very high. . . . The battlefield has become more and more transparent for us.”
Most of the story is visible only if you have a subscription to AvWeek.
Asia Times: Tesla loses lead to local upstart in China’s EV market .
The headline is kidding. The car that is outselling Tesla is a $4,200 el cheapo for short-haul shopping and picking up the kids in the city.
Tumblr media
Sexy as a truss ad, but…useful. I’m telling you, put the college funds in this company, not truss ads. Made by an SAIC-GM partnership, majority owned by China, where it was designed and made. Will be sold internationally.
“Unlike Tesla, which requires purpose-built charging stations, the Mini can be plugged into a home power system to charge, which takes about nine hours. It has a range of about 120 kilometers and a top speed of 100 kilometers per hour, according to the carmaker’s promotional materials.” Designed and put into production in one year. (Did I mention that the Chinese are a commercial people?)
China’s Y-20 strategic transport aircraft gets key indigenous engine: reports Chinese design. How close it is to being ready for prime time is not clear, but it is flying. An inability to make high-end engines has been a problem for China.
The WS’20 is a high-bypass turbofan of Chinese design.
Finally, Global Times”, Beijing’s news site: “China’s trade volume increases 37% y-o-y in April, marking 11 consecutive months of positive growth”
Nuff said.

How to Tell Your Client the Invoicing Charges without Any Stress
Invoicing and accounting were never an easy subject. We’ve always struggled in school and at times even today. This is why only a handful of scholars get to become the best of CAs. and there is literally no bad at that. Each one of us is different and brilliant in our fields. There is nothing to be embarrassed about.Read on and know the important tips to reduce invoicing related stress.
Now you must be wondering the whole reason behind this session of TEDTalk. So, while scrolling Reddit a couple of days ago, I came across a post that haunted me for hours. It was about how an amazingly talented photographer was embarrassed about successfully doing his business because of the lack of some admin skills.
I wondered how this must be a problem of many who do not say it. This seemingly minor obstacle became a major problem for someone to be successful. I could not control but sharing this with everyone who is facing these problems.
But, first, please read the exact situation
“I’ve been working for a company led by a successful photographer in the UK for a few years until about a year ago when I left the country for personal reasons. I’ve remained close to the company and started doing freelance work for them as a photographer, doing behind the scenes photography, and work on other projects. It is however really hard for me to set my own prices as I haven’t done freelance work before and don’t really know how to break down my costs and adjusting my rates, as I’ve been offered 200£ one time and 2000£ another time for projects that took about the same amount of work. A lot of the jobs I’ve been getting are also very spontaneous, asking me to fly out on location within just a few days so there often isn’t much time for preparation.
So when it comes down to sending my invoices I end up procrastinating and building up anxiety about it to the point where I’ve just ended up doing work for free a couple of times already. I’ve asked other photographer friends what their process is but never really managed to get a proper response from them and I just get ashamed to tell them how helpless I am. I really love my work but I’m embarrassed by my lack of professionalism when it comes to the admin side of it and it’s making me doubt if I should even pursue this career or just find regular employment again. I’m taking this to Reddit hoping that I could maybe get some pointers in the right direction.”
This particular issue has sparked so many questions that need critical understanding and precise targeting. As an invoicing expert, I would like to resolve each of the queries of my friend u/gabbacus (Reddit Username).
How to break down project costing to justify every cost?
What factors to take into consideration while deciding cost?
How much is worth your services?
Why are projects estimated differently at different times?
How to create an Invoice that is self-explanatory?
How important are estimates and charges list?
Why is it important to seek expert guidance?
Lastly, Invoicing is a minor issue to create any embarrassment.
Keep on reading to find out solutions to avoid complications while invoicing and successfully carry out administration jobs without any fail.
Question 1- How to break down a project costing to justify every cost?
In any project that you carry out, there are multiple costs involved that your customers might not be aware of and consider you’re overcharging. To take your customer in full trust, break down the cost for them to help them understand better. For example, a photographer’s full charges can include-
Time billing
Photography cost
Travel charges
Rental charges
Markup charges
Taxes
Additional services
Consultation fees (if any)
The above is the precise breakdown of costs a photographer should include in their invoices. Apart from this, there are multiple other types of invoices that you can create such as
Lump-sum billing– for collectively charging prices for the project. It is basically for bigger projects including many folds of project management.
Up-set billing– a combination of time-cost and lump-sum billing, up-set billing is about charging a lump-sum to work in a particular time frame.
Question 2- What factors to take into consideration while deciding cost?
It might not seem important at first, but how you invoice photography clients can have a big impact on the success of a job, and your profit margin.
A key factor/tip that will be directly relatable to your business is bill your clients three or four times more the payment amount you want to take home. There is nothing unethical about it. Because this cost will include all your other costs associated. For say, if you want to take $25 at the end of the day home, bill your clients $100 to $105. This amount will help you cover up all the costs that you have invested and later take back home the desired income you want to. Some photographers contrast to the hourly billing and suggest it is not the best way, but it is important as a photographer to value your time and bill on the basis of hours invested.
On the other hand, the other most chosen method of billing clients is billing for products. Ie. prints, books, photos, etc. it is generally a totally different billing segment and not mixed with time-based billing.
In a photography business, an invoice is generally split into two parts- the cost to do the work (taking pictures) and the cost to use the pictures(picture licensing).
Therefore, when you bill next time, make sure you are taking into consideration both of the most important factors and reduce invoicing related stress.
Question 3- How much to worth your services?
A photography business is one of the most diverse business segments in the society out there. Where getting appreciated and acknowledged is a long road to achieving achieve. Therefore, if you will not value your pieces of art, no one out there will ever too.
Now, once you firmly appreciate your work. You can let your clients perceive higher values of your services fairly quickly. Most importantly, a business presentation is everything. More so in the business of art. Do not forget to consider these factors while upgrading your business.
Decorate your space to make it more professional and welcoming.
Your packaging is your branding. Ensure every packaging material you use is fully branded and professional with logo and information.
Let your customers experience a VIP customer service experience.
Photography is a luxury. Just like people invest in expensive bags and cars, they like to invest in photography. Be the one their best money can only buy.
Always stay ahead of your competition. Regularly track them and create newer strategies to stay ahead and relevant all the time.
Question 4- Why are projects estimated differently at different times?
Now, this is a complete situation based circumstance. Many times as businessmen we tend to make decisions that are of best of interests at a given point of time. Make sure to consider a few factors while estimating projects-
The kind of project you’re working on
Your current business needs
Past experience of the projects
Project involvement needs
Need for supplies
Calculate hours to be invested.
Question 5- How to create an Invoice that is self-explanatory?
Well, an invoice is your most professional document, apart from being your reward to cash for services. It is your most eligible branding and a communicating piece of business art. An online invoice should be your most calculated, explanatory, and itemized list to help clients understand prices well.
Here are all the details an invoice must have-
Client’s name
Client’s address
Business name
Address of the Business
Business contact details
Itemized list of services, products
Taxes and description
Payment details
Terms and conditions
Payment due dates
Lastly, thank you notes
Question 6- How important are estimates and charges list?
Estimates are your gateway to new projects. They tell your clients how much they will be paying for services that will be offered to them. An estimate is a sum of items, and tentative expenses. It also includes tentative extra charges that might incur during the course of the project. The estimated cost of a work is a close approximation of its actual cost.
Question 7- Why is it important to seek expert guidance?
While you’re a photography expert, you still need expert guidance on administration tasks that you’re still a noob to. Because your entire cash flow depends on your invoicing. New Post has been published on https://magzoso.com/tech/meet-the-b2b-videoconferencing-startup-thats-gone-crazy-for-online-dating/
Meet the b2b videoconferencing startup that’s gone crazy for online dating
Founder Andreas Kröpfl has spent almost a decade hard-grafting in the b2b unified communications space, building a videoconferencing business with a patented single-stream system and a claim of no ‘drop-offs’ thanks to “unique low-bandwidth technology”.
His Austria-based startup’s current web-based videoconferencing system, eyeson (née Visocon), which launched in 2018, has had some nice traction since launch, as he tells it, garnering a few million customers and getting a nomination nod as a Gartner Cool Vendor last year.
Eyeson’s website touts ‘no hassle, no, lag, no downloads’ video calls. Pricing options for the target b2b users run the gamut from freelance pro to full-blown enterprise. While the business itself has pulled in a smidge less than $7M in investor funding over the years.
But when TechCrunch came across Kröpfl last December, pitching hard in startup alley at Disrupt Berlin, he was most keen to talk about something else entirely: Video dating.
That’s because last summer the team decided to branch out by building their own video dating app, reusing their core streaming tech for a consumer-focused social experiment. And after a period of internal beta testing — which hopefully wasn’t too awkward within a small (up-til-then) b2b-focused team — they launched an experimental dating app in November in India.
The app, called Ahoi, is now generating 100,000 video calls and 250,000 swipes per day, says Kröpfl.
This is where he breaks into a giggle. The traction has been crazy, he says.
In the staid world of business videoconferencing you can imagine eyeson’s team eyeing the booming growth of certain consumer-focused video products rather enviously.
Per Kröpfl, they had certainly noticed different desires among their existing users — which pushed them to experiment. “We saw that private people like the simple fun features (GIF reactions, …) and that business meetings were more focused on ‘drop-off’ [rates] and business features,” he tells us. “To improve both in one product was not working any more. So eyeson goes business plus SaaS.”
“Cloning eyeson but make it social,” is how he sums up the experiment.
Ahoi is very evidently an MVP at this stage. It also looks like a pretty brave and/or foolish (depending on your view) full-bore plunge into video dating, with nothing so sophisticated as a privacy screen to prevent any, er, unwanted blushes… (Whereas safety screening is an element we’ve recently seen elsewhere in the category — see: Blindlee.)
There’s also seemingly no way for users to specify the gender they wish to talk to.
Instead, Ahoi users state interests by selecting emoji stickers — such as a car, cat, tennis racket, games console or globetrotter. And, well, it goes without saying that even if you like cars a lot you’re unlikely to change your sexual orientation over the category.
There are no generic emoji that could be used to specify a sexual interest in men or women. But, er, there’s a horse…
Such limits may explain why Ahoi is generating so many early swipes — and rather fewer actual calls — in that the activity sums to (mostly) men looking for women to videochat with and being matched with, er, men.
And frustration, sexual or otherwise, probably isn’t the greatest service to try and sell.
Still, Kröpfl reckons they’ve landed on a winning formula that makes handy reuse of their core videoconferencing tech — letting them growth hack in a totally new category. Swipe right to video date.
“People are disappointed by perfect profiles on Tinder and the reality when meeting people,” he posits. “Wasted time. Especially women do not want to be stalked by men pretending to be someone else. We solve both by a real live conversation where only after a call both can decide to be connected or never see each other again.”
Notably, marketing around the app does talk rather fuzzily about it being a way to “find new pals”.
So while Kröpfl frames the experiment as dating, the reality of the product is more ‘open to options’. Think of it as a bit like Chatroulette — just with slightly more control (in that you have a few seconds to decide if you don’t want to talk to the next in-app match).
The very short countdown timer (you get just five seconds to opt out of a matched video chat) is very likely generating a fair number of unintended calls. Though such high velocity matching might appeal to a certain kind of speed dating addict.
Kröpfl says Ahoi has been seeing up to 20,000 new users added daily. They’re bullishly targeting 3M+ users this year, and already toying with ideas for turning video dates into a money spinner by offering stuff like premium subscriptions and/or video ads. He says the plan is to turn Ahoi into a business “step by step”.
“Everyone loves to make his profile better,” he suggests, floating monetization options down the line. Quality filtering for a fee is another possibility (“everyone is annoyed by being connected to the wrong people”).
They picked India for the test launch because it has a lot of people on the same timezone, a large active mobile user-base and cheap marketing is still “easily possible”. He also says that dating apps seemed popular there, in their experience. (Albeit, the team presumably didn’t have a great deal of relevant experience in this category — given Ahoi is an experiment.)
The intent is also to open Ahoi up to other markets in time too, once they get more accustomed to dealing with all the traffic. Kröpfl notes they had to briefly take the app off the store last month, as they worked on adding more server capability.
“It is very early and we were not prepared for this usage,” he says, admitting they’ve been “struggling to work on early feedbacks”. “We had to make it invisible temporarily — to improve server capacity and stability.”
The contrast in pace of uptake between the stolid (but revenue-generating) world of business meeting-fuelled videoconferencing and catnip consumer dating — which is money-sucking unless or until you can hit a critical mass of usage and get the chance to try applying monetization strategies — does sound like it’s been rather irresistible to Kröpfl.
Asked what it feels like to go from one category to the other he says “crazy, surprised and thrilling”, adding: “It is somehow also frustrating when all the intense b2b work is not as closely interesting to people as Ahoi is. But amazing that it is possible thanks to an extremely focused and experienced team. I love it.”
TechCrunch’s Manish Singh agreed to brave the local video dating app waters in India to check Ahoi out for us.
He reported back not having seen any women using the app. Which we imagine might be a problem for Ahoi’s longer term prospects — at least in that market.
“I spoke with one guy, who said his friend told him about the app. He said he joined to talk to girls but so far, he is only getting matched with boys,” said Singh. “I saw several names appear on the app, but all of them were boys, too.”
He told us he was left wondering “why people are on these apps, and why they have so much free time on a weekday”.
For ‘people’ it seems safe to conclude that most of Ahoi’s early adopters are men. As the Wall Street Journal reported back in 2018, India’s women are famously cool on dating apps — in that they’re mostly not on them. (We asked Kröpfl about Ahoi’s gender breakdown but he didn’t immediately get back to us on that.)
That market quirk means those female users who are on dating apps tend to get bombarded with messages from all the lonely heart guys with not much to swipe. Which, in turn, could make a video dating app like Ahoi an unattractive prospect to female users — if there’s any risk at all of being inundated with video chats.
And even if there are enough in-app controls to prevent unwelcome inundation by default, women also might not feel like they want their profile to be seen by scores of men simply by merit of being signed up to an app — as seems inevitable if the gender balance is so skewed.
Add to that, if the local perception among single women is that men on dating apps are generally a turn-off — because they’re too eager/forward — then jumping into any unmoderated video chat is probably not the kind of safe space these women are looking for.
No matter, Kröpfl and his team are clearly having far too much fun growth hacking in an unfamiliar, high velocity consumer category to sweat the detail.
What’s driving Ahoi’s growth right now? “Performance marketing mainly,” he says, pointing also to “viral engagement by sharing and liking profiles”.
Notably, there are a lot of reviews of Ahoi on Google Play already — an unusual amount for such an early app. Many of them appear to be five star write-ups from accounts with European-sounding names and a sometimes robotic grasp of language.
“Eventhough Ahoi has been developed recently, it had high quality for user about calling, making friends and widing your knowlegde [sic],” writes one reviewer with atrocious spelling whose account is attached to the name ‘Dustin Stephens.’
“Talking with like minded people and same favor will creat a fun and interesting atmosphere. Ahoi will manage for you to call like condition above,” says another apparently happy but not entirely clear user, going by the name ‘Elisa Herring’.
There’s also a ‘Madeleine Mcghin’, whose profile uses a photo of the similarly named child who infamously disappeared during a holiday in Portugal in 2007. “My experience with this app was awesome,” this individual writes. “It gives me the option to find new people in every country.”
Another less instantly tasteless five-star reviewer, ‘Stefania Lucchini’, leaves a more surreal form of praise. “A good app and it will bring you extra income, I would say it’s a great opportunity to have AHOI and be a part of it but it’s that it will automatically ban you even if you don’t show it. Marketing. body part, there are still 5 stars for me,” she (or, well, ‘it’) writes.
Among the plethora of dubious five-star reviews a couple of one-star dunks stand out — not least because they come from accounts with names that sound like they might actually come from India. “Waste u r time,” says one of these, who uses the name Prajal Pradhan.
This pithy drop-kick has been given a full 72 thumbs-up by other Play Store users.

5 Killer Quora Answers On Concrete Onderwijs Producten
Most concretes sort an impervious area, which means h2o hits ‘em and runs suitable off. Pervious concrete, often known as porous pavement, does the opposite— its larger sized particles let precipitation to seep each of the way via to the bottom.
Sealing concrete might or might not change its visual appearance and all of it depends upon the sort of concrete sealer you use. Almost all of the penetrating or chemically reactive sealers are Nearly invisible mainly because they enter in the pores from the concrete surface.
Estimating the concrete required to fill the voids in concrete block requires obtaining the amount of the void within the block being used and multiplying that by the amount of voids during the wall.
And it’s a article-game I’m hunting ahead to continuing with. Certainly, you can find gaps in my sketchbook – web pages featuring genie elements aren’t marked about the map, producing them a genuine treasure hunt – but I’m a lot more serious about the gaps on Denska’s walls.

Indeed, your subscription will vehicle-renew renew just after your no cost trial and after your one year subscription has ended so you don't have any service interruption.
Even so, solvent-based sealers Have got a couple of drawbacks. These sealers have greater VOC material and they are looked upon as considerably less eco-friendly.
On software, this concrete sealer penetrates deep to the floor and when it dries, it creates a semi-gloss end. If you apply the EnduraSeal Concrete Sealer, don't just does it seal the pavers but also it stabilizes the paver joints.

‘A single A part of Tokyo, Sumida, was faced with city flooding throughout rain as 80 per cent of its surface area area was concreted.’
‘Folks dwelling close to the internet site packed a community Assembly final calendar year with regards to the plans, fearing the only remaining inexperienced space in the area would find yourself concreted in excess of.’
Explain the concrete operational stage of improvement Explain the concepts of making use of classification, seriation, and transitivity for the duration of this stage
Drinking water-primarily based sealers are significant-general performance sealers having a reduced sheen and they are commonly minimal in VOC. The polymer particles are usually dispersed in drinking water inside of a drinking water-dependent sealer and when the drinking water-based mostly sealer is placed on the concrete floor, the polymer particles catch up with if the water evaporates.
After applying 2 coats of Armor SX5000 silane siloxane sealer, the h2o would bead up about the brick like drops on the waxed car or truck hood. The joints had been sealed too judging how dry the garage stayed just after thirty minutes of hosing. I laid tile on my countertops and backsplash and want to seal my grout joints with this. Milky water physical appearance and light viscosity causes it to be quick to use and dries crystal clear
A silicate sealer can be a penetrating sealer comprising of compact particles of silicate which are suspended in a lithium or sodium carrier, which carries the silicate particles through the pores from the concrete. When the silicate particles are inside the concrete, they go with the community of pores and hairline cracks and respond chemically With all the minerals current within the concrete to form CSH (calcium silicate hydrate), that makes the concrete floor more robust and likewise can help to circumvent the entry and passage of salts, h2o, chemical substances, etc. through the concrete.
On the other hand, Regardless of the a number of positive aspects that polyurethanes have around epoxies, the bonding with concrete isn't really efficient and they don't operate really properly in filling cracks and divots on the concrete floor.

How to Plan Out Milky Way Photos
Plan your work and work your plan. That’s what… someone important once told me? Anyhow, in my opinion, planning out your Milky Way shots is absolutely one of the best ways to increase the likelihood you will be shooting bangers.
Aloha! My name is Daniel Stein, and I’m a nightscape photographer based in New Jersey.
In this article, I will be talking about how to read the weather, Moon phases, light pollution maps, and of course—the timing of the Milky Way core. While I touched upon these items in my Milky Way photography 101 tutorial, I will be going further in-depth in this article so you can really nail it down. Fear not though young citizen, everything here is super easy to follow along with.
What Do You Need to Make the Wow?
Want to hear something cool? Pretty much every tool I am about to describe is free, with a few exceptions depending on your use cases. Let’s run down one by one what I use to plan and what each tool is used for.
National Weather Service. This free website is by the most accurate way to determine if the weather is going to be good at your location of interest.
Astrospheric. This handy free web and phone app is super helpful to determine how “clear” the sky will actually be. More on that later.
Gaia GPS. This free source is great for hikers and backpackers alike. Optional if you are not into hiking, but if you are chances are you already have this. Note: to use offline features you will need a paid subscription.
The Light Pollution Map. As you probably are already aware, this free website is the ultimate way to figure out where dark skies are near you.
Planit Pro and PhotoPills. These paid tools are essential. I don’t like telling people to spend their moolah, but as you will see $10 goes a long way. Each tool has its pros and cons, and this tutorial is cross-compatible with both. Either one works, determining which one is for you will ultimately be up to what interface you think you will enjoy!
Google Maps. Last but certainly not least, this is mega helpful in determining where you want to go. Street & 360’s views are key, that way you can determine your landscape before even getting there. This is critical for planning.
Note: I am by no means affiliated nor sponsored by any of the above mentioned websites and tools.
Double note: For international folks reading this, chances are your country has a similar service to the NWS. This is most likely going to be your best bet for weather as well.
What I Do With These Things? This Is Already a Lot?
Don’t worry, we will break these down one by one. I have a very linear thought pattern so we will go through them in the order I use them.
First Things First, Determine the Darknessness
The first thing I like to do when it comes to planning my shot is determine IF it will be dark enough. I mean, come on, makes sense right? Why waste the time figuring out all of the other nonsense if the sky is going to be way too light polluted?
So, simply fire up the light pollution map. Now, if you are not already familiar with the color-coding this map uses, lemme explain real quick…
This map uses something called the Bortle Scale. Essentially, the brighter, warmer colors depict MORE light pollution with white being the brightest, while the cooler and darker colors depict less light pollution. Here is a graphic I made that correlates to this scale:
In order to photograph our galaxy, you will want to shoot for a Bortle Zone 4 or better. The darker the skies, the more potent the Milky Way will be. This is a great starting point for determining a location where you want to shoot.
Here is something you need to consider: not only does the Light Pollution in the spot where you are shooting from matter, but so does the direction you are looking towards. If you are looking towards a Core rising in the heart of a massive city, you will capture lots of light pollution on the horizon in that direction.
When to See the Core
The visibility of the Milky Way core is not consistent from one night to the next. Rather, it is determined by these factors:
Time of year
Latitude
Moon phase
The direction you are facing (which kind of goes into time of year — more on that below)
I will break these down below.
Time of Year and Direction
As briefly discussed in my Milky Way basics article, the core rises and sets at different times and directions throughout the year. Here are examples:
During “early core season” such as March, the core will rise in the very early morning such as about 03:00 due Southeast.
Early core season
During “mid peak season” such as July, the core can be seen rising once dark night has begun due at about 23:00 due South.
Mid peak season
During “late season” such as September, the core can be seen setting due Southwest just after sunset at about 21:00.
Late season
Note that these times and directions will vary slightly based on your latitude.
Oh Look, Latitude
What in tarnation is latitude? Sounds complicated. The latitude is the measurement of your location in relation to the Earth’s poles. Since, believe it or not, the Earth is indeed a sphere, think about a circle. Halfway around a circle is 180º of rotation. Latitude starts at -90º and spans to 90º. So there you go, 180º of rotation.
If you are standing at -90º, you would be on the South pole. If you are standing at 0º, you would be dead-center at the equator. Likewise at 90º, you would be directly under the North Pole with that dude who is always wearing fluffy red jackets.
We can apply this to finding the Milky Way by understanding that the latitude you plan to shoot at will affect how much dark night you actually have to work with. Think about how there is a summer and winter solstice and how they affect daylight hours. During the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere, the days are long but the nights are short. This will ultimately limit the window of time you can shoot, as will our rock buddy, the moon!
View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Dan Stein (@danieljstein)
This is a biggy and it is easy to understand why! The Moon acts as one big ol’ bucket of light in the sky that will wash out the sky during a Full Moon, but completely reveal even the faintest detail of nebula during a New Moon.
What is New Moon exactly then? Well no, the Moon is not literally new, but rather its phase is. The New Moon phase is when the location of the Moon is between the Earth and Sun. Therefore, the bright side of the Moon is facing away from us essentially makes the Moon invisible to us. Full Moon is, of course, the opposite.
The Moon transitions from New Moon to Full Moon over the course of 14 days. This is called waxing. As it transitions from Full Moon back to New Moon, it is then waning. The Moon rises in the East and Sets in the West every night, just like the Sun. Once we understand these Moon Phases, we can then apply it to our Core timing we learned above and thus realize that it does not always need to be New Moon to shoot the Milky Way Core!
In this shot for example, I captured a Waxing Crescent Moon setting on the horizon:
This means that despite the Moon Phase not being New, it was still going to set in time for me to shoot the Milky Way Core shortly afterward.
Using the Apps
At this point, you can use the above information directly in an app like PhotoPills or Planit. This will allow you to make a specific plan for a specific shot, down to the act time and focal length. That way, you can visualize your shot before you get there, thus reducing the possibility of perhaps looking in the wrong direction, or being there when the moon is too bright. This is why planning is critical. Why get to a location only to find the shot is a no-go. Plan, plan, and plan some more.
Putting All the Wow Together
So now you know how to time the Milky Way Core, let’s apply this to how I would use these tools to plan a shot.
1. Check the Light pollution Map to find your spot.
You can actually do this right in Planit or Astrospheric which is super handy!
2. Zoom out on the map to determine your surroundings. How much light pollution is going to be on the horizon? In my example, there will certainly be some.
3. Use Google Maps to figure out what your shot looks like.
If you are lucky, maybe you can drop that little dude to determine there is a street or 360º view someone took of your location, therefore figuring out what your landscape looks like. Do this side by side with Photopills or Planit to figure out the different features and what your shot may look like. Plug in your focal length and figure out if you want to shoot wide or telephoto.
4. These apps have the NPF calculator built-in, so if you are not shooting with a tracker, you can figure out your shutter speed based on your camera and focal length easy peasy!
5. Determine when you want to shoot your shot. What time of year are you going? And as a result, what direction will the Core be rising and setting to and from?
How is the light pollution on the horizon affected by this?
6. Look at the Moon phase! What time is it rising and setting?
Will the Core be visible before or after the Moon rises or sets? In my example, it looks like the Moon sets at 00:09, while the Core will already have risen. This means I would have the rest of the night to shoot! Weeeee.
7. Okay, so now we know the timing works out, but what about how to get there? Back to Google Maps for a second here. If your shot is car accessible, legally, no problem. But if you will be hiking, this is where an app like Gaia GPS will be critical for planning.
I will not get too deep into hiking basics and etiquette here as that is an entire post on its own, but regardless of where you choose to go, please leave no trace!
8. We are so close! Now it is up to Mama Nature to determine if our plan can come to life. So, let’s check the weather.
Note that this really does not become accurate until perhaps a few days out, maybe even the day of. Type in your location into the NWS site. See what the clouds are doing, and do not forget to check the wind speeds! If it is too windy, it may be too difficult to set up a tripod and get good exposures.
9. Use the forecast as an opportunity to be prepared. What clothing do you need to bring? How many layers, etc…
10. One last often overlooked step is to determine how clear the sky will actually be beyond just cloud cover. Astrospheric shines at this. You can use the map layers to determine sky transparency, as well as if there is any smoke or haze in your area.
The clearer the skies, the juicier the shot.
11. It is time. Let’s go. You worked hard for this shot. Make it happen.
So, what shots are you going to plan this year?

The Best Online Jobs for Teens
For most teens, the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown a wrench in their part-time employment plans. Fortunately, just because you’re still in school doesn’t mean you can’t work remotely, and online jobs for teens are now more common than ever. There are many different online jobs that would work for teenagers, but we looked specifically for ones that would be most flexible for a student’s schedule, and have the lowest barrier to entry.
The Best Online Jobs for Teens:
Tutor Online
Transcribe Audio
Take Surveys Online
Sign Up for Money Making Apps
Sell Stuff
Become an Influencer
Earn Scholarships
Online Tutoring
With many parents homeschooling their kids for the first time, there is a huge demand for tutors. Pick whatever subject or subjects you’re best at, and offer to tutor over Facetime or Zoom. You can post fliers in your neighborhood, have your parents put the word out to other parents, or post your services on Facebook.
If you don’t want to tutor in a specific school subject, you can also work as an English language tutor. Apps like NiceTalk (16+) pay you to video chat with people trying to learn English through conversation. You can log on whenever you want (as long as you can video chat) and take requests from students.
You may be assigned a random student or students could choose you from a list of available tutors. Your sole responsibility is to have conversations with students.
You get paid for each full minute you spend talking to your students. NiceTalk pays $10 per hour. The company only pays via PayPal. While the pay isn’t great, if you have a few extra hours to help a student learn English, it could be a fun way to earn some pizza cash.
Transcription Services
If you’re a quick typer, you can easily earn some money transcribing audio files to text.
For those of you who speak a foreign language, there are higher-paying transcription jobs for translators as well.
Rev is one legitimate website for freelance transcription jobs. There is no age limit, and they pay a flat rate of one dollar per minute of audio transcribed.
Let’s do some math. The average talking speed is 100-130 words per minute, and the average typing speed is 40 words per minute. So if it takes you about 3 minutes to type one minute of audio, you’ll be making about $20 an hour. Not bad for a teen’s first job!
And the best part? The more you type, the faster you get. Not only will you start earning more money, but a fast typing speed is a great skill to list on your resume.

Taking Surveys Online
When I was in college, I taught venture capitalists how to use Youtube and Myspace. Companies need to be able to keep up with current trends, so they’ll pay you to tell them what’s in! Most surveys don’t take that long to complete, and you can take them from anywhere with your phone.
iPoll is one app that will pay you to hear your opinion. You have to be 17 or older to sign up.
Similar to Google Option Rewards, all you have to do is answer brief questions about products and services that you’re already using.
You can earn gift cards for PayPal, the Apple App Store, and Amazon for your participation.
If you’re under 17 (but over 14) you can sign up for LifePoints instead. Formerly known as MySurvey, LifePoints is a survey site that lets you earn points by taking surveys, tracking your experiences with a particular product in a “diary entry,” or testing products at home and then giving feedback.
Several online reviews note that it can be difficult to get a handle on how much a “point” is worth, as different surveys assign different values to points. For example, one survey may offer an exchange rate of 2,400 LifePoints for a $24 PayPal payment, while another might give you $5 in PayPal after you earn 5,500 LifePoints.

Sign up for Money Making Apps
You’d be surprised how many apps there are that will pay you just to know what you shop for and what videos you like.
Swagbucks offers rewards points for shopping online, browsing the web, answering surveys, and watching entertaining videos. All of this can be facilitated through the mobile app, and anyone over 13 can sign up.
You can redeem Swagbucks points for gift cards or get cash back to your PayPal account.
Swagbucks gives away more than 7,000 gift cards every day. They’ve paid out more than $410 million in rewards since the company was first founded back in 2008.
You can earn 1,000 SB points ($10 in value) if you sign up and make a qualifying purchase at a store featured in the Swagbucks shop.
You can also get paid for walking with the Sweatcoin app.
All you need to do is keep Sweatcoin running on the background of your phone at all times. The app will automatically track your steps. Every 1,000 steps rewards you with 0.95 Sweatcoins.
Sweatcoins can’t be withdrawn as cash. However, you can redeem them for goods and services. Some featured examples include athletic wear, audio books, headphones, and meditation.
More than 300 brands have partnered with Sweatcoin. Most of these goods and services are related to promoting a healthy lifestyle. You have to be 13 or older to sign up.
The third best money making app for teens is Slidejoy. This app adds advertisements to your phone’s lock screen.
Each time you check your phone, you’ll see a new ad or promotion.
Slide left to learn more information about the ad. Swipe up to view another one. Or slide right to access your home screen.
Slidejoy is only available for Android users, and you have to be at least 13 to participate.
You can cash out rewards via PayPal, or donate your earnings to one of Slidejoy’s charity programs.

Selling Your Stuff
You probably have stuff laying around that you could sell to earn some extra cash.
Here are some ideas:
TV and Movie Memorabilia
Sports Cards
Clothes
Sneakers
Video Games and Consoles
Bicycles and Strollers
Toys and Action Figures
Collectibles
Old or Vintage Electronics
Books or Box Sets
There are a couple different apps you can use, depending on what you’re selling.
The OfferUp app is perfect for selling your used stuff to people in your area. Think of this app as a hybrid between Craigslist and eBay.
You have to be at least 13 to sign up. Then, simply upload some pictures, a description, and set your price. Everything from appliances to clothing and cars is available on OfferUp.
If you want your listing to get more views, you can pay to promote it.
Historically, you had to meet up with buyers in-person to complete the transaction. But OfferUp recently added a shipping feature that facilitates sales nationwide.
You could also use OfferUp to buy items for cheap and then flip them to turn a profit.
Poshmark allows users (over the age of 13) to list their items on the website. Once you sign up for an account, snap a photo of the item you want to sell, include a description, and set a price. The app even lets you host a party so you and your friends can list like-items together. Poshmark supplies the box and postage for free!  There’s no charge for listing your items, but once you sell them there is a $2.95 fee for items under $15 and a 20% fee on items over $15.

Become an Influencer
Before you scoff, do you know how much money influencers can make? It’s a legitimate career choice now. If you want to become an influencer, you have a couple of different options.
Start a YouTube Channel
YouTube is one of the heavy weights for making money. Simply start a channel, upload videos, and try to get as many video views as possible.
This strategy will take some time, and you’ll have to build up your personal brand so you can increase your subscriber base. There are 5 ways to make money from YouTube, and each has specific eligibility requirements:
Ads
Channel memberships
Merchandise
Super chat and super stickers
YouTube Premium
If you think this would be a good option for you, check out this post on How to Make Money on Youtube.
Become an Instagram Influencer
If you decide to start a YouTube channel, you may want to use Instagram as part of your strategy. But you can also earn money on Instagram alone.
The key is followers: If you get enough followers, you can become a brand ambassador or affiliate partner with companies. Some programs pay a one-time fee per referral, or others are structured as ongoing revenue for the lifetime of your contract.
But the most common way they’ll pay you? Free stuff. It takes a lot of time and followers to actually start making money. When I first hit 100,000 followers on Instagram, the ‘offers’ I got were ridiculous.
So if you want to earn a legitimate income, you’ll have to get even bigger. Or you can forget about selling other people’s stuff, and focus on creating and marketing your own products through your channel. That’s the strategy I’ve gone with. (If you want to see what I mean, check out my instagram.)

Start a Twitch Account
Twitch pays you for playing video games. Yes parents, that’s a real job now. More specifically, you get paid if enough people want to watch you play games.
Twitch players stream video of themselves playing games, and those who watch them donate money directly, purchase subscriptions, or watch ads.
A player with one of the biggest followings, Richard “Tyler” Blevins, reportedly made $5.4 million in 2018.
If you want to make that kind of money, you have to build up a big audience, which isn’t easy. Learn more about how to get started from this post: How to Make Money on Twitch.

Earn Scholarships
While this isn’t technically a ‘job’, if you need to earn money for college it’s a great way to spend your time. If you’re a high school student, you have a lot of scholarship resources available to you. They can be broken up into five areas:
High school career centers
Library and bookstore
Scholarship search sites
Ethnic organizations
Friends and family
With these resources, you’ll be able to earn thousands of dollars in scholarship money. Here’s how:
Once you’ve looked at all the scholarships you can through the aforementioned resources, you can turn to different search engines and websites that can help you find scholarships.
Many of them even include features that allow you to search for specific criteria like:
School-specific scholarships
Amount of money earned
GPA requirements
Essay requirements
You can set up email alerts so that you are automatically notified when the sites find scholarships that fit your specific needs.
Here are a few suggestions for great sites to help you look for scholarships:
Fastweb.com
Scholarships.com
Chegg.com
There are also many scholarships that are ethnicity-based, meaning that you’ll have to be a certain race or background in order to qualify for the scholarship.
A few suggestions:
Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund
The United Negro College Fund
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund
Irish ancestry scholarships
German ancestry scholarships
Of course, simply fitting the racial criteria for ethnicity-based scholarships isn’t enough. You’re going to have to knock the application out of the park (more on that later).
If you want to learn how to crush your scholarship applications, check out my post on How to Get Scholarships.

Collectibles
Old or Vintage Electronics
