If by chance you ran into each other occasionally in the neighborhood, the greeting was limited to a brief "hello" accompanied by a slight nod of the head.

The atmosphere on those occasions was tense and filled with a strange mix of nostalgia and unexpressed resentment. Both of you remembered the shared moments, laughter, and displays of affection, but the reasons that led to your separation were also present. It was like a delicate balance in which neither of you wanted to delve too deep into the past.

Conversations were scarce and superficial, avoiding personal and delicate topics. Glances briefly crossed paths but then averted, trying to avoid discomfort. Although Sae tried to be polite and courteous, there was a slight tension in his expression, as if he too were remembering the reasons things didn't work out.

When encountering you in inevitable situations, such as social events or common places, he did everything possible to avoid contact and acted as if he had never shared a history with you. His gaze shifted, his gestures turned cold, and his conversation was reduced to what was strictly necessary.

His goal seemed to be to make it clear that he no longer wanted any kind of connection with you. He avoided mentioning the past, any conversation related to the relationship, or any trace of nostalgia. He acted as if he had never known you, denying any emotional connection that had existed between you.

But although his attitude may seem insensitive or harsh, it was his way of dealing with the breakup and finding his own path forward. Everyone has their own way of facing the end of a relationship, and in Rin's case, his approach was to stay distant and avoid any possible conflict or feelings of nostalgia.

ISAGI

He's the kind of ex-boyfriend with whom you definitely maintain a solid friendship even after breaking up. Unlike many exes, Isagi showed genuine concern for your well-being and was willing to support you at any time.

If you were sick and needed help, Isagi was the first person to offer to take care of you. With his compassionate and kind attitude, he made sure you felt comfortable and cared for during your recovery. Reo believed that his attempts at communication were spontaneous and natural, but in reality, they were intrusive and unhealthy. He didn't respect the boundaries or the space you needed to move on. Instead of respecting your decision to move on, Reo clung to the hope of rekindling what you had, failing to understand that time and circumstances had changed. Ultimately, Mikage Reo became one of the worst kinds of ex-boyfriends, unable to accept the reality of the breakup and respect your personal space. His constant attempts at contact only perpetuated the pain and hindered your healing and personal growth process.

Although who are we kidding? You would definitely get back together with him in a month, only to separate again.

SHIDOU

The worst of them all, he's practically capable of posting a naked photo on Instagram with the caption "Back in the game" in red letters.

He was capable of anything to grab attention and provoke emotions after the breakup. His behavior was manipulative and egotistical, using social media as a tool to generate jealousy and rekindle your interest.

Shidou actively sought a new partner and did everything possible to publicly showcase his "new life" and apparent happiness. He would post provocative and enigmatic photos on Instagram with the clear goal of grabbing your attention and eliciting an emotional response from you.

Instead of dealing with the breakup in a healthy and respectful way, Shidou chose manipulative and unethical strategies to stay in your mind and life. His goal was to generate an emotional reaction in you and maintain control, rather than allowing you to move on and find happiness in other aspects of your life.

All in all, Shidou Ryusei stood out as the worst kind of ex-boyfriend, using social media as a tool to emotionally manipulate you and create a sense of rivalry and competition. His actions reflected a lack of emotional maturity and deep selfishness, showing little regard for your feelings and well-being.

When he returns, you tackle him in a hug and he runs a soothing hand down your back as you babble on about how terrifyingly huge the bug was and how close it was to you.

(In reality, it was rather small and barely anywhere near you, but if it makes you feel better, Adonis doesn’t mind playing along with this little white lie, patiently comforting you all the while.)

When you call Nagisa, he’s confused at first.

Of course, Nagisa would never say no to spending more time with you, yet you sounded strangely choked up over the phone, Nagisa, can you come over here, quick, I need you right now. He enters your dorm, surprised to find you cowering in the corner.

When you point out the perpetrator, he can’t help but smile at your antics. It’s an easy task for him to simply remove the bug from the premises with his bare hands, but you look at him with incredibly wide eyes when you watch him and he can’t help but bask in your attention. It’s always nice to have you look at him.

He returns to a hug and a tearful recount of how you were so scared. He soothes you, calmly patting your back as you ramble on and on. You go on to explain how you called because you always feel better when he’s around, and his heart bursts. You inform him that this may become a regular occurrence, and he smiles at you.

He’s not entirely sure what use he would be, yet it warms his heart to think that you would trust him with matters such as these.

When Ibara first hears your call, filled with barely concealed panic, he won’t deny the worry that surges in his stomach. Ibara, please, come quick, I… Oh, god, I can’t…I’m scared, Ibara. It only intensifies when your call is cut off with an abrupt scream of pure terror.

For a moment, he’s terrified that his worst fears have come true and you’ve been caught in the crossfire of one too many plots gone wrong. He spares not a single second, abandoning everything and anything from meetings to paperwork to go check up on you. Of course, when he finds out that all your drama was due to a simple bug, you can expect him to be the slightest bit annoyed.

There’s not a moment of hesitation as he squashes it, all the while looking at you with an unimpressed expression, as if to say, really? That’s what you were terrified of? Yet when he notices your tears, he is quick to calm you down, gently holding your hands to ground you as speaks rationally and logically to talk you out of the spiral you may have found yourself falling into.

My saviour, you proclaim him to be, and Ibara won’t lie to say that makes him feel the tiniest amount of pleasure when you say those words.

• You wouldn't have to hold back sharing the burdens and stress you feel, he can prop them up on his shoulders with his burning passion that you would suddenly feel lighter again and all prepared to continue fighting.

• In the middle of unwinding and putting your mind off the stress, you might find yourself casually watching his favorite Tokusatsu shows while he's acting out those cool transformations and attacks from them that he remembers by heart, encouraging you to do the same since it might help you release your frustration. It's totally okay if you don't want to either and if you have another idea in mind, he will be by your side and do it together with you.

• Besides that, your mind would be filled by hero catchprases or cool declarative statements he would think fit the hero image of your spirit so you can try giving yourself a pep talk whenever your difficult scenarios come up; all prepared!

It wouldn't do for him; the nii-chan you decide to depend on—to just avoid the troubles eating up at your mind. Nazuna appreciates the fact that you come for him out of all people, it shows how much he's delighted that you probably depend on him as a brother you can confide in seeking comfort rather than the other one you have.

~ Nazuna would then focus all his efforts towards brightening up your day and shoo the dark clouds away until you can show your joy or energy is back again and free from the stress tying you down, having his favorite smile vanish like that really tugs at his heartstrings.

~ With him being your supporter who knows better that you have struggled and are doing your best even in these tough moments, he knows you'll manage to go fight through the stress and heading forward sooner or later. No matter what, Nazuna won't give up cheering for you!

~ Being together with him have the high chance of success perking you up as he's genuinely trying his best but not too much on giving you comfort.

~ Spending the time not doing much, he would go for a trip down memory lane, reminiscing any of your or his simple happy memories you want to talk about especially if they're the kind of nostalgia that stays a sweet fluffy warm feeling in your heart... Can we have ryuuse as a twin brother 👉👈? I know this dude will act as if he is older by 5 years not 5 minutes, so not much of a difference than a normal sibling but one thing for sure (based on my twin cousins) he will have a soul level connection with them ><. Like one day his twin is on date which ended up with a bad break up, and then he suddenly has this nagging uncomfortable feeling in his chest while practising ><. This unknown sad/painful/something is wrong feeling out of no where which drives him crazy. He seems not acting his usual self during practise and even stopped half way just to call his twin and make sure ... and yeah T_T they tried to sound 'normal' and lie, but oh thats doesn't work when you have a twin T_T.

Funfact! I am actually Shidou's twin irl! Jokes aside, we really have the same birthday (and it makes me very happy to share my birthday with one of my favourite characters)

-even though you're twins, Ryusei acts like an older brother all the time. Well, there are some occasions when he actually acts accordingly to your age difference, but he even calls himself your "big brother" and you his "little sibling" all the time

-you go to the same school in the same class, so teachers tend to compare you a lot. Ryusei being Ryusei, he's not on best behaviour most of the time. All the time, actually. Teachers always tell him things like "You should act more like (Y/N)."

-you definitely got the same craziness as Ryusei hidden in you, but you're better at controlling it in the correct situations

-you're not a soccer player, but you go wild in your own passions! Which Ryusei supports very much. He loves seeing you being as passionate about something as he is about soccer

-him acting like an older brother all the time is something that doesn't bother you at all. You grew up that way, so it's nothing out of the ordinary. But it confuses other people all the time when they find out you're twins

-he does have some reason to call himself your big brother, tho. He's much taller than you. And he will forever tease you about you being smaller

-because you're twins, you just have this connection that lets the other sense how they're feeling. You immediately notice when even a tiny thing is off about the other one

-when Ryusei notices you're feeling unwell, he always starts asking tons of questions about what happened, who hurt you and who he has to beat up

-and despite you telling him not to, he definitely has started fights with people who have hurt you. And he would do it again at any point in time

-whenever you notice he's feeling unwell, you ask him to talk about his feelings. He always refuses to at first, but whenever he notices you're getting very worried about him, he does open up

-Ryusei has a lot of violent urges and built-up anger inside of him. But there's also a lot of frustration and sometimes sadness, which he doesn't like to talk about. You're the only person he ever does talk to about it, even if it takes a bit to get him to open up

may I ask if you can tell me things about Essi and Axyl. Need to get to know the Koma kids better. Where they present when Koma was invaded? what did they do? how did what happen affected them? during fusion did they stay in Koma or did they also go out trying to stop the Dark Nebula? How did they react when Ryusei was actually alive? So many questions.

ooo this is a fun one. I think after Koma’s invasion, the De La Cruz parents were very quick to feel really unsafe in the village and they moved to a bigger city for the safety of themselves and their children not long afterwards. It was hard for both of the siblings to leave the place where they grew up and it was a big adjustment for them, but they lived with it. I think Axyl probably became a lot more quiet and closed off as a direct result, but essi had an especially hard time adjusting. She was trying to save face and stay strong but she was really wrecked by it. She was also particularly upset when Gingka went off on his own to go after the dark nebula. He was planning to leave without telling them, but she caught him in the act, and was really pissed off at him. She tried to convince him to let her come along but he refused and she was both very angry at him and sad about it. Both Axyl and Essi were in the village during the invasion and they didn’t know what the hell was going on besides the fact that Gingka and Ryo went in and only a very devastated Gingka came out. Both of the sibs were close to Ryo and were grieving pretty bad when they heard what happened, also being very worried for Gingka, and this whole incident between him and Essi did nothing to calm her nerves about it.

Both of them took a while to adjust to their new lives in the city and definitely still had some grief that they were working through, but they did settle in after a while. Essi got into the blading scene in the city a lot faster and made rounds at a lot of tournaments, and although her parents didn’t want her going out looking for fights with thugs and potential dark nebula bladers, that didn’t stop her. Axyl was aware that she was doing this and didn’t do anything to stop her, but was silently judging her for it all the while. On Axyl’s end, he was also trying a little harder to get into the scene. Ryo was really important to them when they were younger in getting them to try to keep practicing as a blader and after his “passing,” felt obligated to keep going out of respect for his memory.

Eventually, Essi began catching vague word of Gingka in passing and although it crossed her mind, she figured it probably couldn’t actually be Gingka. At an upcoming tournament though, they end up meeting again and reconnecting and Gingka introduces Essi and Axyl to the main gang. It’s all lighthearted and positive for a while but then Essi brings up how Gingka left, still very much hurt by it because they were best friends and partners in crime AND HE FUCKING LEFT HER LIKE AN ASSHOLE. Gingka apologizes and tells her about how his mission’s been going and very immediately, Essi pulls a “I’m coming with you, and you’re not stopping me this time.” This time around, Gingka is more receptive to it, but Axyl’s more hesitant, not really ever being one to be driven by a call to action. Essi, for her part, is like “I’m doing this whether you come or not. I don’t wanna be separated but nothing you say is gonna stop me and if you don’t wanna come, you’re free to stay here.” and axyl very reluctantly agrees to come along because they also really don’t wanna be on their own.

Eventually, when everything’s said and done and they find out that Ryo’s alive, they’re both very emotional and happy about it. When the full story is explained to them though, Essi gives Ryo a really hard punch in the gut for being an asshole, though still like sobbing and a wreck about it, and probably makes a “like father like son” sort of remark. On Axyl’s end though, I imagine they probably lose a decent amount of respect for him as a result. Eventually I think they come around again, but they don’t really look up to him in the same way it used to. I’ve actually been thinking a decent amount recently about Axyl eventually considering to retire as a blader and Ryo’s probably one of the people they consult about it, but that’s another story

Challenge’s Accepted

A/N: The inspiration came from the JPN server event: SMASH SMASH SMASH! It’s when MANKAI Company did a sentai (superhero) themed play! There’s no Main’s or the event’s story spoiler, only Azami’s appearance if you haven’t read Act 6. Details of this idea is on different post~ 

“Blooming Sentai Mankai Rangers!”

Enthusiasm permeates the air through kids’ shouts and cheers. They rejoiced for Mankai Rangers’ victory over Evil Bear’s recent exploits. Parents who stood on the back gave pleased smiles and clapped along. It was another successful show for the Mankai Rangers. 

Among the parents standing were several MANKAI members on stand by as backstage crew. Kazunari was checking on the video camera and Yuki was muttering to himself about the costumes. Citron was talking animatedly with a person from the neighborhood association, and Sakyo was discussing the acting part of the show with Tsumugi and Izumi.

“Even with a small stage, they manage to make an impact on their entry. Azami’s landing and Tsuzuru’s slide did give a glimpse of their rangers personality.” Izumi commented.

“I agree with you, Director. Even in a short time, you can already imagine what type of ranger they are. They also manage to position themselves well, so the children can easily see all of them.” Tsumugi added.

“While Bon’s ranger has a smug in their personality, he still needs to slip one smile or two. It could show his smugness and satisfaction in defeating the villain. Good thing he smiled on the final pose.” Sakyo, arms crossed on his chest, pointed out.

The brown haired woman mused, “You really paid attention to Azami’s performance, huh, Sakyo-san?”

“He’s still low in stage experience, so we have to give input to him every time he stands on the stage.”

“Ahaha, that’s typical you, Sakyo-san. Still looking out for him on every chance that you have.”

“Ah? What are you saying, Tsukioka?”

“Hey hey! Let’s take a picture with everybody!” Kazunari, who has changed the video camera with Omi’s camera on the tripod, voiced his idea to the crowd.

“Okay! Let’s go everyone! Kazunari-kun, please arrange our positions!”

“Yeah, you got it, Director-chan~ OK, c’mon kids! Make two lines in front of the rangers! Hey! Yeah, you, Miss! Yeah you! It’s okay, you can be in the picture too! OK, let’s see...ah, you, boy with a blue shirt please...”

When the audience began to disperse, the MANKAI members gathered on the back stage.

“You did great, Tasuku! I already took some notes like you asked.”

“Thanks, Tsumugi. Let’s discuss it when we got home.”

Sakyo, of course, directly went to Azami’s side.

“Bon, your entry with Minagi was already good but your movement on the fighting scene needs to be toned down. We already went through that scene in practice and you still missed that on the actual play. Next, is blah blah blah…”

Azami, unsurprisingly, was not impressed. “Tch, I’m not even out of the costume and you already nags about everything.”

Sakyo didn’t seem to care about Azami's complaint,  “The sooner you listen, the better you’d remember. There’s a high chance that you will forget the details in your performance when we get back.”

“So you’re underestimating me?!”

“You lack experience on stage, so you better learn from all your performance. You won’t catch up to the rest of us if you don’t.”

“I don’t want to hear that from you! Hah! As if you got experience in sentai-theme play!”

“Unlike you, brat, I learn from various sentai-themed media to teach you that very same move you just pull on stage.”

“Hah, yeah to cover your lack of real experience on stage. I bet you can’t even do their catchphrase.”

“You’re challenging me, bon?” Sakyo stepped closer to Azami, leering to him behind his glasses.

Azami didn’t even flinch and meet his leer head on, “And if I am?”

“Now now, you two...keep it easy.” Omi, still in his Bear outfit, placed himself near Sakyo. Banri did the same with Azami, both ready to intervene if needed.  

After a while, Sakyo backed up. Azami smirked in triumph and Izumi thought it was over. 

Until Sakyo took a stance and...

“Akai hono wa seigi no akashi! Makka ni moeru inochi no taiyou! Ryusei REDDO! Morisawa Chiaki!”

Tsuzuru heard the catchphrase he had become accustomed these days and pitched in, “Aoi hono wa shinpi no akashi~ Aoi umi kara ya dekita~ Ryusei BURU, Shinkai Kanata! Kira!”

Both held their stance for a while before they dropped it. “And that’s...how you do a catchphrase as a hero in a sentai-themed play.” Sakyo stated in the end.

Their example of catchphrase left other MANKAI members stunned, before various responses erupted. 

“OHO! Very unuse of Tsuzuru and Sakyo to do mentai dance!”

“Unusual! And it’s Sentai!”

“That is right, Tsuzuru!”

“What the hell, Shithead Sakyo?! Don’t you remember your goddamn age?!”

“HAHAHAHAHA WHERE THE HECK DID YOU LEARN THAT?!”

Banri guwaffed behind a wide-eyed Azami. Omi and Tsumugi--they tried, definitely tried--to contain their laughter, to no avail.

“Frooch! Tsuzuroon! Do it again, I need to video that!”

“Hm! That movement inspired me to make my own move! Velvet rose, strike in--”

“Please don’t start…”

“Excuse you, Tasuku-kun!”

“Hack, don’t you even think of making one.”

“H-hey I didn’t want one anyway! I’m fine with the MANKAI Rangers one!”

“Honestly I don’t expect you guys to do that, but that’s great work, Sakyo-san and Tsuzuru-kun!”

“Ahahaha...thank you, Director. The catchphrase is kinda imprinted in my mind too...”

“I can do better than that as long as you watch me, Director.” 

Amidst the chatter, Sakyo was trying to calm his beating heart. Citron was right, it was unusual for him to do this. He just got reeled by Bon’s taunt, resulting him to do something to prove him wrong. He may not have got a role in this sentai-themed play but he rigorously learnt from many sources about it, to help other members with the play. A subtle way to help the director and Azami, coated in his ardent interest in all theater-related subjects.

“Hahaha! That’s one energetic catchphrase you did, Furuichi-san!”

“Excuse me…”

Sakyo turned and saw two figures standing a meter away from them. “Ah, it’s you two. Good afternoon.”

“Furuichi-san! Never thought you’d demonstrated my catchphrase!” The brown-haired young man stepped closer to Sakyo, taking the shorter woman along by the hand. 

Sakyo pushed his glasses further on his nose, “I was demonstrating on how to do a sentai-themed catchphrase to a member of our company. Again, I thank you for allowing us to ask about sentai-themed show back then.” 

“Ah, it’s fine! Well, you know how passionate Chiaki-senpai is about tokusatsu and sentai shows.” The short, chestnut haired young woman smiled. “We’re happy to help our fellow entertainer. Thank you for inviting us to watch the show too, Furuichi-san.”

Seeing the two conversing with Sakyo, Izumi walked up to them. “Hello! You two were watching the show, right? Thank you for your support!”

Both the young man and woman bowed in return, “Thank you for inviting us! We really enjoyed the show you guys put together. Ah, here’s my card...”

“Eh, ah right.” Izumi fiddled with her purse and pulled out her card, “here’s mine.”

“Thank you.”

Izumi read the name card, before meeting her eyes to the brown-eyed young woman, “So you’re...Anzu-san, a producer huh. I’m curious though, how did you know Sakyo-san?”

“Oh! He and Minagi-san went to one of our shows in the theme park. After our show, they approached me to ask about the sentai-theme play we did. Of course, a hero is always ready to help! So I answered their question and even taught them our catchphrase. You know, to get the whole sentai feeling! Hahaha!” Chiaki explained, putting his hands on his hips in the end as he laughed. 

Izumi chuckled, “Oh, the lengths you do for Azami-kun…”

“Shut up! He’s not the only one that I discussed about what I learnt!”

“You were more intense when you trained Azami-kun, though. I saw that~” the director teased.

“Tch!”

2020 winter jdorama ratings/reflection

Hope everyone and their loved ones are in good health. Don't forget to wash your hands and practise social distancing. If you need something to fill your time, last season's J-dramas were all pretty mediocre, apart from Ship of Theseus. I haven't watched since episode 4, but its ratings climbed from an unremarkable 11% to finish on 19.6%, so definitely worth checking out. Keiji to Kenji was actually quite well-written with likeable characters and snappy humour, but it tanked when Higashide Masahiro's adultery broke news, and is a real shame for the rest of the cast and crew. While its rating was unimpressive, Shiranakute ii koto is a nicely written adult story about love, romance, family, career and personal growth. While I'm not a fan of adultery storylines, the treatment of this romance is done with a gentle touch and a realistically imperfect ending. Lower on my recommendations list - Top Knife was a let-down. While it's medically very well researched (so nice to see neglect and Capgras and other unusual neurological disorders discussed), it didn't have the emotional grit of Code Blue and the characters are less relatable. Koi wa tsudzuku yo, doko made mo is a rare opportunity for a medical-based shoujo romance to grace the small screen, and while it's well-received on social media, its ratings were just acceptable. It lacks the finesse of romantic K-dramas, and doesn't have quite the classic shoujo sweetness about it, and Kamishiraishi still needs polish, but it's sure nice to see a shoujo romance for a change. Shiro demo kuro demonai sekai de, Panda wa warau was a nice opportunity for Yokohama Ryusei to mature his acting skills, even as the plot fell to shreds around him. I feel like it's going to be a tough year for Japanese dramas for a variety of reasons, but next season seems to be where most stations have hedged their bets, so hopefully we'll see some more consistent quality and some higher ratings out of it. 2020 Winter dorama ratings rank 1. “Yo! Ikura-hakase here.” She waves. “I know things have been quiet lately, but there’s good reason for that. We’re hard at work on our first ever Summer movie! Exciting, right?” Ikura grins. “Unfortunately, until we finish, posts will be rather sparse. So, for now, I’m going to present a Top 5 to fill in the void of our absence!” 

A whiteboard rolls up out of nowhere, which has five long magnets covering up spots on it. 

“So, if you know anything about me as a person, you’d probably know I’m a huge Metal Hero fangirl. I mean...hello, I made Kyusha. But have you ever wandered what my personal favorites are? Well, wonder no more! I’m here to count down my personal favorite Metal Hero series! I’m going to set a few ground rules here. Given that there are two trilogies and a duology in the franchise, I’m going to limit myself to one entry each. So I can only choose one Space Sheriff, one Special Rescue team, and one B-Fighter team.” She blinks. “....that is, if I do put them in. And one more thing- this is probably gonna change. I mean, seriously, my favorites kind of change depending on what I’m in the mood for, but I love them all.  

#5 - Space Sheriff Sharivan

“I’m going to go ahead and get it out of the way- I love Gavan because he’s the original, and Shaider is....” Ikura pauses. “....well, Shaider, but when it comes to the Space Sherriffs I have to go with my boy in red, Sharivan. After all, I took a lot of my inspiration for Kyusha from him. Laser pistol? Finishers that end in ‘Crash’? Check, check, double check.” 

She clears her throat. “Anyways, Den Iga was a forest ranger from Inner Iga island. He was attacked and mortally wounded by the Buffalo Doubler, and sent off to Planet Bird by Retsu Ichijouji for some medical assistance. Impressed by his courage, Commander Qom of the Galactic Union Police (who Retsu works for) trains Den and eventually he becomes Sharivan, showing up in the last battle against Makuu to bail Gavan out of a tight spot. Afterwards, he remains stationed on Earth to fight against the Madou Space Crime Syndicate. They’re a totally different organization that definitely isn’t a pale imitation of the Makuu Space Mafia. Nope.” 

Ikura taps her chin. “Honestly, what isn’t there to like about Sharivan? His striking crimson electro-plate armor is sure to make an impression, and his spaceship turns into a giant robot thing that...admittedly, looks like a vacuum cleaner with legs, but still manages to look cool. Somehow. Not to mention, his theme is easily the catchiest out of the three Sheriffs. Heeeey booooy~” She starts humming to herself.

#4 - Tokusou Robo Janperson

“If Jiban is the Metal Hero franchise’s answer to Robocop, then Janperson is it’s answer to Robot Detective. Y’know, one of the more forgotten Shoutarou Ishinomori shows from the 70s?” Ikura clears her throat. “Anyways, what does Janperson do? Well....he fights for justice. Seriously! Over the course of his adventures he tears through four different criminal organizations. Damn! Janperson doesn’t fuck around!” 

“One of my favorite things is the way he announces his presence. The bad guys could be in the middle of a meeting or plot, then all of a sudden, a golden card with a star on it is embedded in the ground at their feet! It’s a JP-Card, which means Janperson has arrived to kick ass and take names! One thing that’s interesting for Janperson is that he follows in the footsteps of the Special Rescue trilogy and mainly fights criminals. Occasionally he fights runaway robots or killer cyborgs, but Janperson mostly goes up against assassins, mobsters, etc. That said, though, he’s still got a crazy big arsenal to boot! Cannons, wire punches, missiles, and lots and lots of guns. No wonder he defeats four criminal organizations- he mowed them all down with his weapons!”

“Now, as for his appearance, he’s purple, which makes him stand out pretty well. He doesn’t transform so much as he throws off his civilian clothes and put a combat visor on his face. That’s it. Because....well, he’s a robot. So, he’s kind of always on duty as a result. I really love his car- the main section can split into a helicopter, while the car becomes remote-controlled and has a giant frickin’ cannon in it! Subtlety, thy name is definitely not Janperson.” 

#3 -  Choujinki Metalder

“So remember the Kikaider duology? The tale of two cyborgs fighting against evil while struggling with what it means to be artificial life? Well, Metalder is their cousin, and he’s pissed. Created by  Dr. Ryūichirō Koga as a secret weapon in WWII, and modeled after the Dr.’s dead son, Tatsuo Koga. The Doctor ends up shelving Metalder due to his pacifism, and fucks off to the United States to go work for NASA. Then, Koga’s old partner, Kunio Muraki turns super evil and becomes the wicked God Neros, who creates an empire of machines. Dr. Koga discovers this, and Neros begins working to kill him. It’s been 42 years since he hid away Metalder, and he reawakens him. Giving him the name Ryusei Tsurugi, the Doctor dies to Neros’ forces, causing Ryusei to get pissed and become Metalder for the first time.” 

“Phew! That’s a lot to talk about. Metalder is a story about revenge. During his quest to defeat the Neros Empire, Ryusei befriends many people and learns a lot about emotions, life, and the world he fights to protect. In the end, he sacrifices his humanity in order to save the world, losing his ability to fight in the process.”

“If there’s one thing I can give Metalder credit for, it’s how freakin’ brutal the fights can be. Since Metalder is a cyborg, and he fights other robots and cyborgs, there are a lot of times where gets torn open, loses a limb, etc. Likewise, his enemies get pretty beaten up, too- they don’t always die in explosions. Sometimes they just get beaten until they’re dead. While there’s plenty of your typical toku tropes- y’know, explosions, calling out your attacks, and finishers- Metalder does just enough to make itself stand out a bit more from the rest of the Metal Heroes. While a bit on the short end, it’s a good watch.”

#2 - Jikuu Senshi Spielvan

“The planet Clin is destroyed by the Waller Empire, which is searching for its deity. Two children survive and escape to Earth aboard a ship named the Grand Nasca. The two grow up during the long journey and arrive on Earth to begin fighting against Clin to make sure that the same tragedy isn’t repeated. Along the way, Spielvan searches for his missing father and sister.”

“You wanna talk about space epics? Spielvan is probably the greatest example in the franchise. Seriously, I love the opening of Spielvan just because of the epic scope of it. Spielvan did a few things for the franchise that hadn’t been done up to that point; while previous heroes had female sidekicks, they never joined them in battle. Well, that all changed with Diana Lady, who fought alongside Spielvan pretty regularly.”

“The two claims to fame that Spielvan makes after that is his signature double bladed Laser Blade, which I also took inspiration from for Kyusha! Alongside that is the arc of Spielvan coming to learn that Hellvira, one of the Waller Empire’s strongest agents, was actually his brainwashed sister! Eventually he saves her and she joins up alongside them, becoming Helen Lady. Though....her suit is just a slightly different version of Diana Lady’s. Pretty lame, right? Well, regardless, Spielvan is freakin’ awesome. But.....it doesn’t beat my absolute favorite...”

#1 - Tokkei Winspector 

“I tried. I really tried to pick something other than Winspector for my number one spot. I love Solbrain, I love Exceedraft, but I have a soft spot for the original Special Rescue Police team. They fight criminals who are a bit too much for the regular police to handle- those that use superweapons, cyborgs, or other threats to commit crimes. Atop that, they also perform rescue in situations that are a bit too delicate for firefighters or other rescue services. The team consists of one human and two robots; Ryoma Kagawa, Fire, who acts as the leader and main investigator. His two partners are Walter, a green flying robot, and Bikel, a yellow motorcycle robot who speaks with a Nagoya dialect.” 

“Honestly, everything I love about Metal Hero can be seen on display in this series. The futuristic setting, the hard sci-fi influences, the cool gadgets, the intrigue, it’s all there. And what’s even better, despite not having any monsters of the week for the first time in the franchise’s history, Winspector has a lot more room to tell compelling stories as a result. You get stuff like fighting to get a cure for a super rare snake’s venom, defending a boy from a killer cyborg condor, chasing runaway robots, or taking out mad inventors. Don’t forget that the ever great Takayuki Miyauchi sings the theme for the series, which he also does for the two sequels, Solbrain and Exceedraft. Honestly, I could talk all day about this series. What’s great is that, even today there are spiritual successors in the form of Rescue Fire and GoGoV. Definitely worth checking out if you want a bit of a change of pace.” 

Ikura claps her hands together. “Well, that’s my top 5! Maybe one day I’ll have Keiko, Yuna, or Hikaru do one of these. Wouldn’t that be fun?? Anyways, that’s enough for now. I’ve got to get back to work.”
