No offense but I think maybe people are overstating the influence Bucky had especially on Steve's desire to join the army. Maybe he was influenced by his father Joseph even though he never met him more? Like he didn't just want to join the army he wanted to join the 107th because originally that was the division his father was in. Bucky joined but Steve wanted to join even before that because of his father. Kind of like Luke Skywalker wanting to go off in adventures because of the image of his father.
I normally take these asks in good faith but do you know how passive-aggressive it is to start a conversation with “no offence but”? Because not only are you aware you’re about to cause offense you’re also intending to.
Canon doesn’t give us a lot to go on in terms of Steve’s inner thoughts about joining the army. The interpretation that Joseph was the inspiration is perfectly valid. As is the interpretation that Bucky’s draft was the motivation. And I’m not sure why they have to be mutually exclusive?
I will say though, because the MCU was very thin on details for Steve’s parents, many fanfic writers turned to the comic books for inspiration. The 616 iteration of Joseph, an alcoholic (likely from untreated PTSD) who subjected Sarah and Steve to abuse, is likely the reason many fans don’t lean into him being an inspirational figure for Steve.
The Cap fandom is big and diverse, and all kinds of headcanons exist. All I can say is you need to curate your experience better if seeing Steve-Bucky centric headcanons bothers you this much.

So I heard a theory that Dr Raynor in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (I hate how they still call him that....) is *meant* to be a bad therapist because she's intended as a commentary on how the system mistreats veterans.
I want to think that's true but the way Bucky thanks her in the last episode doesn't make sense if that's the case. Maybe he was just being polite tho.
Someone said that during an interview with Raynor’s actor, the impression she gave was that Raynor was genuinely trying to help Bucky heal…which isn’t what we saw but one also wonders how much post-production editing and framing played into that.
While that might have been the intention, I think many fans find it easier to make sense of the series if they treat Raynor as working with the military/government agencies to either monitor Bucky (to make sure he doesn’t disclose any information they don’t want made public) or to get him operational for a military role. Which…I’m told, is not much different from real life veteran counselling anyway, with the focus on getting people functional for the field rather than on their long term recovery.
As for the theory that she was deliberately written as a bad therapist to shine a light on bad military therapists? You guys give Spellman too much credit. Nowhere in the entire story does it seem like he has any understanding or respect for mental health or trauma recovery. It’s all some hand-wavy dramatised depiction of what one might think mental health interventions looked like, if one had heard some third-hand accounts and thought “wouldn’t it be funny”. So no, any parallels with real life bad therapists is purely accidental.

JDorama 2024 Spring
I didn't watch any Jdrama last season, but as is usual for spring (more than winter), there are some impressive ensembles this season.
Believe / "Bridge to you" Stars: Kimura Takuya, Takeuchi Ryoma, Amami Yuki
A bridge architect is indicted for negligence when an almost-complete bridge collapses and kills one of the workers. He pinpoints the issue to inferior materials bought without his knowledge, but the CEO of his company forces him to take the brunt of the blame. Now in jail, he sets about trying to build an appeal to prove his innocence.
The first episode was a little slow, to be honest, and it jumped between present and flashback without warning, although it was pretty obvious which was which. I was shocked when Amami Yuki appeared, and even more so when she was revealed to be his wife. I never thought I'd see KimuTaku and Amami Yuki side by side in a drama (it's an ego thing in the Japanese industry). They have very different acting styles (she's theatre-trained, he's spent most of his career in front of the cameras) but she's softened her mannerism considerably to match his vibe...although they still don't have much husband-wife chemistry.
Honestly, I feel like the premise so far feels a bit...thin, and I hope he's not going to spend 8 episodes in jail because that means they're really stretching the plot.
Anti-hero Stars: Nasegawa Hiroki etc
A criminal lawyer is willing to go to any lengths to defend his clients, throwing into question what the concept of "justice" really means.
This has an ensemble cast of up and coming stars like Kitamura Takumi, Horita Mayu and Oshima Yuko, as well as respected veterans Nomura Banzai and Kimura Yoshino; all great and charismatic actors. I've seen Nasegawa in two other dramas previously (Chiisana Kyojin and Date - as well as Boss but I don't think that counts), and I found him inexplicably annoying in both.
As I do here, although I don't think the fault is entirely his. The drama goes out of the way to be so bloody melodramatic, with close up angles of him hissing his lines, rousing orchestral music and long unnecessary philosophical speeches. I watched the first 2 episodes at 1.5x-2x speed and still finding it a chore. I wonder if I would enjoy it more if I liked Nasegawa because at least, you know, I'd enjoy the visuals of a BBC Sherlock-wannabe (what's with the long coat and upturned collar) delivering his equally caustic lines and creepy mirthless smiles, but I'm finding him neither interesting nor likeable at this stage, so as much as I like the supporting cast, the rest of the series is going to be a pass from me.
Destiny Stars: Ishihara Satomi, Kamenashi Kazuya
Kanade was in a close-knit friends group in law school. One day, her boyfriend Masaki goes out to grab some groceries - or he tells her - but gets involved in a car accident where a mutual friend dies. He subsequently disappears. 12 years later, she's now a prosecutor getting engaged to a doctor boyfriend, when Masaki reappears and suggests that there was more to the car accident, and more to the death of Kanade's father some 20 years ago.
Another extremely convoluted set-up for a story. I generally enjoy watching Ishihara Satomi, and she's mostly good in this, but occasionally she's still...too much of herself. Like the scene where she confronts Masaki's father, she resorts to her usual jittery girl mode - which might have worked when she was acting as the company intern or newly employed copy editor, but looks really unprofessional when she's been the public prosecutor for more than 6 years. I get that she was flustered, but it didn't feel like a continuation of the same character.
I really like Tomo's actress who I've only seen briefly as a side character in Kyojo so I hope she gets a bigger role as the story develops. Kame's acting has definitely matured, but is still on the bland side here, probably because we don't get a very good sense of who Masaki is. I'll stick with it, mainly for Ishihara, but I do hope the resolution is going to be worth it.

Is leaving kudos on fanfics not common courtesy anymore?
Something I've noticed on AO3 in the last two years is the lack of kudos and comments left on fanfics.
Fanfics have an increasing number of hits, but their kudos and comments remain minimal.
I understand that leaving comments is daunting, but kudos is the easiest thing you can do to show support and appreciation for an author.
Part of me wants to blame BookTok and the commercialized consumption of books.
Readers are more demanding and impatient for content, but they're quick to move on once a book is published. It's a constant demand for 'More, more, more' without appreciating and/or supporting authors. And these readers are now getting into fanfic.
I don't want to complain because it's not productive. But if you're new and getting into fanfic: Support writers.
Support means leaving kudos on AO3, and if you're able, leaving a comment. It's simple courtesy.

Whenever posts that talk about Jack Kirby get popular, I can’t help but notice they’re almost always posts about Kirby being down to punch Nazis and racists. Less commonly they’re posts about how Jack Kirby and Joe Simon’s creation of Captain America was an act of specifically Jewish resistance standing up to both Hitler’s ideology and the American embrasure/inspiration of it at a time when it was not safe to do so. These are important topics and I still don’t think that they are talked about enough.
But I feel like that, partly due to later writers who have deradicalized Cap or kept him stagnant with the times, there is another aspect of Cap as a creation of Jack Kirby that gets overlooked: the fact that in the 1960s, Cap is a reflection of Jack Kirby’s own trauma from the war. Because Jack Kirby did go fight in the Second World War, and it had a profound effect on him. Reading biographies of Kirby’s life and testimonies from people who knew him show very clearly that his astonishing output is in part a coping mechanism from the horrors he lived through. This is further reflected in the narrative threads throughout 60s Cap and the Fourth World in particular.
The mantle of Captain America understandably carries a lot of baggage with it given the very real history of colonialism and white supremacy that America is built on, but Captain America specifically began as a symbol of resistance to that white supremacy and America’s support of it and it’s very disheartening to not only see that erased, but to see people act like Captain America has only ever been intended as a propoganda tool in favor of white supremacy.

So we all know that Tumblr is US-centric. But to what degree? (and can we skew the results of this poll by posting it at a time where they should be asleep?)
