Thoughts on QoN

I started reading The Queen of Nothing on 19 November, 2019, and finished it about fifteen minutes ago on 23 November, 2019. Much as I did with The Wicked King, here are my thoughts while reading.

Spoilers, of course, are under the cut

- Oak is EIGHT??? I’ve been writing him like a three year old this whole time lol whoops sorry Oak

- Idk how to feel about this whole Vivi/Heather thing it smells like manipulation to me

- Lmao Jude’s a freelancer gotta love it

- I have now named my Goblin Brain Grima Mog how dope is that name fr

- Jude is an adrenaline addict and that’s a fact

- (Also not surprised by Grima’s prediction of Cardan being dethroned soon that boy hates his job more than retail workers during the holidays)

- I love the juxtaposition between Taryn in her pretty dress and Jude literally being two steps from death and not seeming to care lol

- Hmmmm okay I want to believe that Taryn killed Locke but couldn’t this just be a way to get Jude back into Faerie??? Idk why they would want that but I don’t trust Taryn

- (Also I hope Locke is dead it would be Taryn’s one redeeming quality)

- So I think I like QoN Cardan the most, although I did find Cardan in the first two books terribly entertaining to read about (Srry Jude)

- So Taryn seems to be behaving better than she did in the first two books, kind of being a badass, knowing the Ghost’s true name and all

Cardan likes hearing about slushy machines are you kiDDING ME????

- “Our marriage is an alliance” okay but you sleeping in his shirts isn’t, now, is it? Or how about him petting your hair? Or you thinking he looks cute in gold eyeliner?? lol Jude get real

- I love how Taryn is hyping Jude up throughout this while shitshow, I love how the two of them have developed past their book one probems

- Look at Jude really having healthy realtionships with the women around her, I’m so proud of my little murder gir

- Nicassia better come in clutch here, I don’t trust Jarel or Nore not one bit

- Uhhh that story Heather told about the snake that wanted to marry the princess made me howl with laughter and I don’t think it was supposed to

- Vivi got Cardan a snowglobe that says “Congratulations on your promotion” for his coronation gift and he kept did DID EVERYONE HEAR ME I SAID VIVI-

- Oh damn Kaye alright no need for all that

- Ohhhh I had totally forgot about the dress in book one that Jude ordered but received a different one instead... Cardan sent it?? wild

- Okay I hope Jude knows what she’s doing but when has she ever not

- Cardan adjusts his paper crown in the microwave reflection so it’s skewed......I don’t think I can react any more I really afjsflsdk

-Wow that was better than anything I could have imagined, hoped for, dreamed of

- The character development, the plot, the resolution, EVERTHING was astounding I’m blown away

I have nothing better to do (that I want to do) rn so pt 2 of me yelling about Frey and Allon’s relationship

Also this is a very long post. Probably not as long as the “do you love the sky” post, but maybe.

[cracks knuckles] So, remember me talking about how I love the little interactions Frey has with my other favorites? I will talk about those now.

Getting the obvious out the way first: let’s talk Mr. CaReLeSs OaF (Allon). I’ve touched upon this already about how the two of them are actually pretty close, but I think I’ll go in-depth on some stuff + give my interpretations on it.

Let’s start with Marmut (one of Frey’s guards)’s discussion about them (GMS2):

Did you know there’s a rivalry between Frey and Allon? Everyone in Tria knows. Guard Captain Frey and Knight Captain Allon have been best friends since they were kids. They’re both really good at fighting, too. A lot of people have high expectations of them, and everyone thinks of them as rivals. I don’t know if they’d agree, though. One second they’re screaming in each others’ faces, the next they’re fighting enemies, side by side.

Nothing really special, but here’s the (rough) KMS2 translation: [also be aware that all the mentions of me talking about the KMS2 dialogue/lines were translated through Google and should not be taken at face value since we all know how Google translate is sometimes.]

Did you not know? Frey and Allon are rivals. They were both friends, but ever since they became captains, many people began to have expectations for both of them. Their rivalry came naturally. But I don't think they consider each other rivals. Even if one reprimands the other's mistake, he wouldn't hesitate to help if the other was in danger. Both Guard Captain Frey and Captain Allon said that they were friends, ever since they were young.

I think it’s pretty clear that in the KMS2 version that Frey and Allon have a somewhat friendlier/closer relationship with one another than in GMS, especially since Marmut directly quotes the two of them saying that they were friends ever since they were kids rather than just. stating so. Which brings me onto my next point--

There’s a relationship chart of a handful of NPCs that includes Frey and Allon, and if you translate the relationship connecting them, it says “I only trust you / As do I” and I,,,, just think that is so sweet,,, while I do think that their relationship is somewhat strained due to the shitshow that’s going on in the world + other people’s expectations of them and the whole "lol rivalry???” there’s definitely a sense of trust and security between the other that is just. Unshakable. Childhood friends and also each other’s confidants,,,

It’s really telling when Allon gets flustered when the MC is like “Frey’ll protect Luanna with his life, eh?” because?? Dude doesn’t wanna hear that, wtf MC?? But Allon quickly just asides that because like. Man has a problem with admitting that he’s not a Cool and Calculated guy like everyone expects him to be. Which is something Frey picked up. [Very cool transition] From namu.wiki:

Knight Captain Allon always pretends to be cold, but his true personality is completely different. Even when he became knight captain, he couldn’t manage his emotions well. If you’re curious, talk about Empress Ereve in front of Knight Captain Allon. You’ll see quite the funny expression.

Like?? LMAO??? FUCK Allon got called out fr and by his friend no less??

Allon fires back, because of course he would. Same source:

Guard Captain Frey and I have been friends ever since we joined the Templar Knights. We were both still inexperienced, but we were able to see each other’s potential. By the way... Guard Captain Frey, I don’t usually mind that you’re older than me, but sometimes you act like a middle-aged man. For the guards that worship him, it’s unthinkable. It’s a bit disappointing that only I know this, but I’ll have to keep his honor.

Sometime u act like a middle aged man,,,, dirty blow sdjhdbasjbHDFD I love their relationship. God. It’s a mess. Also truth be told I’m not sure how or where they got this information, but I assume it’s pretty dated since I don’t think Frey was part of the Templar Knights?? That’s like a Lumiknights thing, right?? idk man there’s just a lot of history I don’t fully understand bc Nexon doesn’t tell us anything.

ALSO ON A SOMEWHAT UNRELATED NOTE I’m gonna talk about the dialogue they have in reference to one another in-game

So, I’ve already mentioned that their idle pop-up dialogues both mention each other directly.

Frey: Allon... Now that he's gone, I might actually start to miss him. Allon: Frey... it’s been too long.

Now from this dialogue. You might be thinking. Damn, Frey doesn’t really seem to miss Allon that much, huh. BUT the KMS2 dialogue has a different tone (Allon... Sometimes I miss you, now that I can't see you...) and I honestly don’t know why the English translators made him so goddamn stale but here we are anyways.

In any case, I think both versions are really interesting!! because like. In GMS2, Frey actually sounds kind of... reluctant? Like he might be on bad footing with Allon for whatever reason, noting his use of “might actually” instead of just outright saying “I’m starting to miss him”. Maybe he too has a case of emotional constipation that Allon has, but I also somewhat headcanon him as just being used to Allon’s company/presence? Since I expect that Allon was in Tria a lot more frequently pre-epic, it’d be no surprise for Frey to just accept Allon as part of his everyday life and move on with his day. Something something, absence makes the heart grow fonder.

BUT I also want to say that he could always be rest assured that Allon is safe? Like obviously Allon probably didn’t stay in Tria all the time but honestly idk what the hell he’d be fighting against pre-darkness. Possibly reconstruction, but that’s beside the point. What I’m saying is that Frey is confident in Allon’s safety, so he doesn’t really think about him much because he can always rely on him to be back. But when Allon leaves for Shadow Gate which is completely devoured by darkness, I think that’s when Frey starts to worry. Just a little bit. He’s trying to have some confidence in Allon being alright there but it’s also kinda hard. He starts missing Allon more because it’s probably the first time in a loooong while that he hasn’t seen him return in a few days. He probably still writes, but... writing’s just not the same.

On the flipside, Allon seems definitely a little more... yeah, dude misses him. Note the word “too” rather than “so”/any other variant with the same connotation, he’s sick of Shadow Gate and wants to return to Tria. Dude admits that when you talk to him. But it’s also a mix of “I miss you” in there, I’d say? Like, maybe he’s just reminiscing on clowning on the dude, but he misses him one way or another. Hell, Allon actually says this after the Eye of Lapenta/Frontier Foundation arc:

Good work, [Player]. I’d better head back to Tria now. I haven’t seen his face in some time.

Yeah. Dude DEFINITELY misses him. But wait!!! THIS IS ACTUALLY HIDDEN AWAY WHEN YOU JUST TALK TO HIM IN THERE. HE DOESN’T ACTUALLY SAY THIS IN THE EPIC QUESTLINE, YOU GOTTA LOOK FOR IT. What he DOES say in the questline is THIS:

I too have strayed too long from the Empress's side. I will return to Tria and carry out my duty.

HMMMM. Dare I say it’s not just the empress he’s strayed too long from. : ^ )

I have no idea how to cohesively blend together topics but Allon also talks to Frey during the siege of Tria too!! It’s probably not very significant but I like to overanalyze things as always so here we GOOOO

Let’s hurry, Frey.

Yep. That’s it. But I think it’s pretty interesting because of just... the wording. Let’s hurry. Let’s. Let us. Allon’s including himself in the situation, which is like a “duh” since everyone’s rushing out to see what happened to Joddy, but. Hear me out:

He’s talking to Frey, 1-on-1, because Frey’s completely shaken up about what happened to the city he’s supposed to protect. Allon could’ve just not talked to Frey at all during that part. Hell, he didn’t even need to SAY anything in reference to Frey. He could’ve just been like “What happened?” and nothing would have come out of it. Actually, a lot of the other NPCs (if not all) that you can talk to (like Ereve and Luanna, I think) have their default talk lines. Which makes Allon’s unique line even more significant.

Allon’s worried about the guy. He’s telling Frey to hurry, but he’s also including himself in it because, well... he made the decision to lag behind with him. He’s urging Frey to move forward, probably not just because they’re falling behind with the others, but because he doesn’t want Frey to just... stand there and grieve. As I mentioned in the other post with the two of them, Frey took the siege of Tria... pretty badly. He got his shit rocked. I think it’s reasonable to say that Frey’s not handling it well right now and Allon recognizes it, even if the others (and maybe even Frey) don’t. That’s some good shit.,,,

Like I imagine that Allon picks up on this stuff well because. they’ve known each other since they were kids. Makes sense to me. They both lookin out for each other.

Speaking of Allon looking out for Frey, did you know Frey has an (unused) voiceline that’s like “Allon, are you hurt?” like wtf WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN I KNOW FREY GOT HIS SHIT WRECKED BUT WHEN DID ALLON (outside of Holstatt cutting his arm or something in the EoL arc)??? Frey wasn’t there at that time!! When would he have said this?? I still don’t know, and it kinda really sucks. I would love to know, but I doubt it’s in the storyline anymore... but shit, him addressing Allon, AUDIBLY, and voicing his concerns about him?? :(

In any case that wraps up my main points about Frey and Allon’s relationship. This got way longer than I expected and I may or may not continue later if I have any other memory of something else I wanted to talk about between the two of them.......
