Something Told Research
Conceptual still life photography
Tips:
1. Choose Subjects that Speak to You
What you photograph is completely up to you. Have a search around the house to see if you can find something simple but interesting to start with. Please don’t feel like you have to take photos of fruit or flowers just because everyone else does: think outside the box without being overly ambitious.
If when you’re out and about something catches your eye, take it home with you (don’t steal it!) or make a note of it so as to remember to try photographing it in a still life context. Try to avoid reflective surfaces such as glass and metal to begin with, as they will be extremely difficult with regards to lighting. Once you’ve mastered the single object shots, try mixing it up, combine objects of contrasting shape, colour, texture and see what you can come up with.
2. Get Comfortable with Light and Lighting
Lighting doesn’t have to be expensive. I know certainly for me that a set of studio lights aren’t really within my budget, so for still life shoots I need to utilize all the light I can get my hands on, and that often means sunlight.
Remember that you have full control over the shoot, so if you want, find a room in which you can block out all natural light by using shutters or curtains, this way you will have complete control over the light upon your subject.
Using standard table lamps can work extremely well if used effectively. Be sure to try multiple positioning set ups, not all light has to come from the front of the object, side and back lighting will add interest, shadows and depth to the shot. Alternatively, choose a room that is well lit via a window, and use this to your advantage. The natural light from one side will comprehensively light your subject and you can compliment this with a lamp or reflector.
3. Get a Good Tripod and Work Your Angles
Depending on your lighting situation, you may or may not need to use a tripod and shutter release. I would recommend using these as they will allow you to observe and work with your subject matter. This set up will also allow you to use slightly longer shutter speeds than usual to ensure a small aperture allowing the image to be in focus front to back, if you so choose.
However, please don’t let a static camera stifle your creativity, it quickly gets forgotten that your camera has been sat in the same position for the whole shoot. Be sure to vary the angles and heights at which you are shooting. Otherwise, before you know it, you’ll have a whole collection of shots all take from the same point with little or know variation. Mix it up a bit. Try shooting at the level of the subject or try a bird’s eye view, looking down onto the subject, but be careful if you are moving around not to cast any shadows on your subject!
4. Get the Backdrop Right
Having a suitable backdrop for your subject matter will play a crucial role in the overall success of your shots. It’s best to keep it nice and simple, so it doesn’t interfere with your subject. A plain painted wall or a large sheet of white or plain colored paper would be ideal.
Think about how your choice of background contrasts the subject, do you want a neutral background, or are there tones that may work in complimenting the shades within your subject. For smaller objects, you may not need a backdrop as such, but instead require a surface to place the items on, for which something like black velvet is ideal, as it absorbs light and looks like a solid black surface.
5. Compose the Shot
The compositional element of your still life work is an absolutely crucial part of ensuring that your work is engaging and unique. Consider the rule of thirds, how can that be applied to your shoot to create a strong composition. Ensure there are no distractions within the frame, just the subject and the backdrop.
Be sure to vary the composition of the subject matter through the shoot and think outside the box. Where are you leading the eye within the image? Are you utilizing negative space or might it work to try and fill the frame? Engage with the subject, what are its defining features? What is it used for? Are you able to put it into context or does it work as a stand alone subject?
6. Take All Day Over It, If You Need
I often find that my mentality surrounding a shoot is dependent on the reason for the shoot. If I am simply taking photos for pleasure or for myself (as opposed to being assigned work by somebody else), I will be less stringent with ensuring that all the aspects of the shoot are as well executed as they can be. This is obviously a bad habit that am aiming to shed, but when it comes to still life photography, there is no reason not to get it right. You have as much time as you need to do a good job!
Unlike a landscape shoot, the light isn’t rapidly changing and unlike a portrait, you’re subject isn’t going to get bored of keeping still for long periods of time. Take advantage of this, set up your subject, lighting, backdrop and camera, try a few shots, then move things around a bit and have another go. If you get to a point where you feel like things aren’t going quite right, you can just leave everything set up, make yourself a cup of tea and come back to it refreshed later on.
Another advantage is that there’s no excuse not to have clean and sharp images, take time to get the lighting and focus just right. If you can get your hands on one, a macro lens will be ideal for this sort of work, however, if not, try selecting macro mode on your camera to give you the best chance of capturing the close up detail in your subject.
7. Get Inspired by the Masters
If you’re struggling with the lighting, composing or structuring of your shots, then you need to find some inspiration, and where better to look than to the original still life masterpieces of years gone by. Have a search online for renaissance still life artists and observe the elements of the pieces.
Studying these paintings will help you to think about form, shades and how the colors work together and will hopefully give you a few ideas on how you can shape your photography work to form strong and engaging images.
8. Develop Your Eye for Still Life Scenes
Now it’s time for you to have a go yourself. Find a quiet day in your schedule and set aside some time to practice. Try setting up your camera and backdrop by a suitably light spot next to a window and get snapping!
Once you’ve mastered the basics, try getting creative, experiment with camera angles, lighting angles and alternative light sources such as candles and lamps. You could even try getting creative with apertures and use a f/1.8 prime lens to achieve an artistic shallow focus. However, if you take one thing from this tutorial, let it be this: still life photography does not have to be of fruit and flowers! Find some unique and inspiring subject matter that gets you excited and start shooting!
9. Perfect Your Post-Production Process
Working with your pictures after the shoot shouldn't feel like a chore. It should be fun!
Photoshop actions are often touted as a great time-saver, but to my mind the biggest advantage they give you is a highly repeatable workflow. Instead of having to work through all the steps from scratch, and action makes a set of choices for you, then you teak and adjust to make things perfect.

Hey I'm in the beginning stages of a graphical nice and just wanted to ask: Should I draw the whole thing as a greyscale piece, or all lineart, or should I complete each page and I go on? Basically, should I do the entire thing at "low quality" before I start finishing individual pages, or should I do each page one by one? ^^" sorry for the confusion ask
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
OKAY DUDE I GOT AN ANSWER FOR YOU THAT’S BOTH GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS: There ain’t no right answer to this question!!!!
Everyone’s process is very different because people are very different, and they’ve developed and finessed their process based on their experiences and what they found has worked well for them.
By which I mean, I can’t give you something that reads like “Aha! Well, here is a 10 step list of how I do things that works,” because what I do might not work as well for you. BUT! I can try to give you some things to be thinking about, that should hopefully help your confidence as you move forward, and I can tell you about what I do so you can have some ideas you can try out and potentially use as your starting process.
WHAT WORKS FOR ME: I do pages in batches - meaning, I will focus on 2-3 pages at once, spending 1-2 days sketching out all of them, then 1 day inking all of them. (I’m very fortunate to work with a Flatter & Colorist, who I pass the pages off to after that point.)
This works well for me because I work full time, and it is easy to fit into my schedule. I spend some nights during the work week busting out a rough sketch when I get home, I print all the pages I’ve managed to do during the week on Friday, and then spending a relaxing Saturday brainlessly inking them.
When I first started, I would only focus on one page at a time, which was far more time consuming, but it allows you to focus on fine tuning and perfecting your process and the technical aspects to your work that will eventually become second nature to you, which is the higher priority at this stage in your comic’s life cycle.
So right now, since you’re just starting out, I would recommend focusing on one page at a time until you feel comfortable with your workflow and process.
That being said, there is no accounting for how your brain will work, and what you will find creatively stimulating. There might be a day where you feel like working ahead to that ONE page you really want to draw, and you end up with 5 sketched/rough pages that all need to be inked, or, when you are working in batches, but all you want to do is spend time making this ONE page look REALLY awesome, and that’s all you get done. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY FINE, AND A TOTALLY ACCEPTABLE WORKFLOW. Keeping your brain engaged and creatively fulfilled is the ultimate goal here, and it doesn’t really matter how that manifests. If you ever deviate from your established routine, you shouldn’t punish yourself for it - that’s just the way things turned out that day.
At the very least, you should set a clear goal for what you want to get done, with plenty of room and ambiguity to meet that goal, to account for this shifting mindset.
For example: “I want to make one page every week,” or “I want to make 2 pages this month,” or “I will sketch and ink one page over the week, and have it ready to flat over the weekend.” This will give structure to your mind but room to accomplish it in the way that feels best for you, and keeps you mentally happy and creatively fulfilled.
DO NOT be angry with yourself if you set a goal that you eventually realize you cannot meet. The goal of “I will finish 2 pages every week!!” might not be feasible for you right now. BUT, in attempting to meet this or a similar goal, be attentive to what you DO get done, and HOW you got it done, so that you can become familiar with your limitations and also what your brain needs to focus and what makes you productive. As you learn more about yourself, your work flow will become more and more efficient and you will work faster and more consistently.
As you learn, you should MOVE YOUR GOALPOSTS:-Your original goal may have been “I will finish a page every week!” but as each week goes by, you realize you can only get to to inks before your deadline passes you. Your new goal should be: “I will get one page inked every week!”-As you work towards this NEW goal, you will both be encouraged by your success, and also learn how to realistically balance your life with this project you have started. -Goals can also be something like “I want to get fast enough that I can ink 3 pages in 1 day if I decide to!” THESE goals are great, because they are short term, specific, and your mindset is already in the area of “I am going to figure this out” rather than “I need to do this or I’ve failed.” These goals might also turn out to be unattainable, but again, all you need to do is adjust your goalpost.
ULTIMATELY, THE KEY IS TO TREAT FAILURE AS A THING YOU LEARN FROM, NOT AS SOME SORT OF EVIDENCE TO YOUR INADEQUACY. You know, all those sayings about how failure isn’t falling off the horse, it’s choosing not to get up, or a man isn’t truly defeated until he gives up, that kind of thing. Sometimes you realize that you were never meant to ride a horse, you do better on a bicycle. That’s not failure either, it’s just learning.
All of it is just about learning! This is a long distance sport, and it’s going to teach you so much about yourself. You’re going to eventually know yourself so well that it will make you an unstoppable monster. But right now you’re just starting, which means you know very little, which is not a bad thing. If anything, it’s exciting! There are so many decisions you still get to make, all these choices you get to explore and have fun with. Eventually you’ll reach a point where YOU’LL be the one with the answers for someone who is at a loss themselves.
Good luck, and most importantly, HAVE FUN.

A Quick and Easy Keyword Research Workflow for Busy Marketers
Tumblr media
Don’t you just hate it when you’re stuck on figuring out which keywords to target? I mean, let’s face it, doing keyword research isn’t exactly sexy. However, despite how monotonous the task might seem, you still need to go through it and find the right keywords since these little nasties can single-handedly make or break your marketing campaigns — regardless of how much time and money you pour into all the ensuing tasks. Keyword research is just that important. Fortunately, there’s a way to make keyword research faster and more reliable in terms of generating profitable results. And that, my friend, is what we’re about to talk about. Subscribe to Read the Largest Marketing Live Book => Allow me to share with you an easy-to-follow keyword research workflow that can help you snag lucrative keyword ideas every single time — in no time.
1. Unearthing Long-Tail Keyword Opportunities
Any self-respecting marketer knows that targeting overly competitive keywords is a bad idea. That’s why the first step in any keyword research effort is always to expand a seed keyword into long-tail keywords. These are keywords that contain three or more terms — pertaining to a more specific topic and catering to a more specific audience. For example, if “auto repair” is your seed keyword, then “affordable auto repair service” is a long-tail keyword you can target. Of course, you’re not supposed to guess what and what works as a long-tail keyword. What you need is a tool like Ubersuggest that pulls in long-tail keyword suggestions from the databases of AdWords Keyword Planner and Google Suggest. To use Ubersuggest, simply fill in your seed keyword, adjust the proper localization, and then click “Look Up.” These are the first three things you’ll see on their site, so they’re impossible to miss.
Tumblr media
Within seconds, you should be able to spot a number of long-tail keywords from the keyword suggestions.
Tumblr media
Neat, right? But are you sure they’re profitable? To determine which keyword suggestions deserve to be used in your marketing, let’s look at the numbers.
2. Understanding the Metrics
Apart from the keyword suggestions themselves, there are only three things you should worry about in Ubersuggest: the search volume, CPC, and competition. - Search Volume First off, the “Search Volume” metric gives you an idea on how popular a keyword is in search engines. This can be anywhere from zero to hundreds of thousands. - CPC If you know a thing or two about PPC campaigns, then you should already be familiar with CPC. Short for cost per click, the CPC metric measures the average amount advertisers are bidding for a keyword. - Competition Thirdly, Ubersuggest scales the competitiveness of a keyword from 0.0 to 1.0 — the latter being the most competitive. A competitiveness score of 0.4 means the keyword has low-medium competition, which is good for small brands and marketers on a tight budget.
Tumblr media
When doing keyword research, a rule of thumb is to find the balance between keyword demand and competitiveness. However, there’s one more factor you need to consider when picking up keyword suggestions:
3. Finding Keywords with High Commercial Intent
Just because a keyword has high search volume and low competitiveness rating, doesn’t mean you should go all in. You should also consider the user’s intent behind the keyword’s usage. For example, you may notice that the keyword “audio speakers” has 33,100 searches and only 0.26 competitiveness rating. With such impressive figures, why do you think it only has an average CPC of $0.91? Because advertisers find it hard to monetize — that’s why. Not only is the keyword unspecific, it’s also used normally for informational search queries. These are when people use search engines mainly for the sake of research. They could only be interested in the types of audio speakers, how they’re made, or how they work. In other words, they probably don’t intend to make a purchase, subscribe to a newsletter, or engage in any form of transaction online. The keywords you need are those used for transactional search queries, which contain commercial or question-based terms like “how much,” “buy,” “how to,” and so on. Fortunately, you can easily inject these terms in your Ubersuggest keyword search. All you need to do is enter them via the filters on the left:
Tumblr media
The bad news is, most if not all of the keyword opportunities in the portable speakers space are already saturated. So from this point forward, let’s go for the seed keyword “pet accessories” and add the commercial terms “buy,” “store,” “order,” and “price.”
Tumblr media
At this point, you should now be able to locate keyword ideas that are truly profitable. As far as search volumes go, most of them may not be jaw-dropping. But when it comes to competitiveness and conversion potential, a lot of them are solid keyword targets:
Tumblr media
Of course, it’s not as if you’re only going to optimize for one keyword per page, right? To maximize traffic, it’s common practice for marketers to target multiple keywords in one piece of content. Now that we got that out of the way, there’s just one more thing you need to do to finalize your fresh haul of keyword opportunities.
4. Prioritizing Keywords
Just like any other commodity, the demand for keywords may also change over time. While there’s no way to accurately predict these changes, you can always look at the keyword’s performance in the past year to determine where it could be in the following months. In Ubersuggest, this can be done by moving your mouse pointer over the “graph” icon to the left of the search volume metric.
Tumblr media
In the pets niche, it’s perfectly natural for most keywords to plateau. For seasonal and trendy niches, however, keyword demand changes are definitely more pronounced. To put things in perspective, let’s revisit the “fidget spinner” fad and how its keywords performed over the past year:
Tumblr media
It’s not rocket science. If one of your target keywords is exhibiting an upward trend in terms of search volume, then prioritize it by all means. But if it’s the opposite, then you should consider putting an active campaign for that keyword on hold. Keyword demand fluctuations may not apply at all times, but they sometimes make the difference between tons of traffic and a website that gathers virtual dust.
Conclusion
There you go — the only keyword research workflow that you’ll ever need. Once you memorize these steps like the back of your hand, you should be able to execute them in 30 minutes or less. Did you get profitable keyword suggestions using the steps above? What suggestions do you have to make the workflow more efficient? Whatever your thoughts, feel free to comment about it below! The Creative + The Chaos
FINDING BALANCE IN THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF MODERN LIFE, AND PRIORITIZING ARTISTIC PURSUITS
Creative personalities certainly prefer to spend precious time pursuing passions and mastering our craft, than to be busied with the likes of cleaning and organization. Meanwhile, the supposed real-world tasks may continue to pile up around us, and that’s ok! Finding a good balance in our daily living is significant to the creative process.
I hope to highlight a few general areas of the workflow to explore, where we may be able to tighten up our practice as artists and creators. This is where my process is currently, but even the process itself may change later on. I may have to adapt to my personal needs from day to day. Adjustments are always good to keep your awareness and skillset agile. I accept every step of the journey. I strongly encourage everyone to seek out and tune in to a system that flows best with your personal rhythm.
“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step…” ~ Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu
A starting point, with some semblance of a finish line is most helpful.
We must begin with the intent to win and commit to it.
DESIGNATE : SPACE
Do you have a designated space in your home where you can comfortably create? A craft corner? Garage workshop? Art studio? Is it truly your own or shared space?
There is a red wooden desk in our living room with a computer hooked up to it that mostly my son uses for online school distance learning. It used to be my desk, but I had to relocate. I found a new-to-me refurbished antique roll-top desk and set it up in the large back room of the house, with enough space to share it with the washer, dryer and folding table… and a mountain of laundry piled high. I hung an opaque curtain to divide the room in half and voila, I’ve made a private corner for myself. Works for me!
It’s important to claim a creative space as your own, so you know there is a spot just for you to freely work your magic, like a wizard behind the curtain.
Do you have a lot of clutter to dig through, burying all your supplies, making it difficult to get into a steady rhythm of productivity? How could you create an environment that is most conducive to your style or creativity? What does that look like for you?
“There’s a method to the madness, I swear!”
~  Famous Line by Any/All of Us
Let the clutter eliminate itself. The best way to get rid of the trinkets and nonsense items unnecessarily laying around, is to envision how you want your creation station set up, then arrange it as such! Think of it like staging and propping up a showroom. You are essentially creating it. You will remove the articles and particles that no longer serve a purpose in your creative space. It may be difficult to let go of the knick-knacks and bric-a-brac, I know, because I am totally guilty of possessing so many trinket treasures! Items that can be re-homed would be happily accepted at your local donation centers. It really is a good idea to refresh and tidy up your space from time to time. Reset it. Doing so clears up any dense or stagnant energy, and helps to keep the flow moving. You might even catch a glimpse of inspiration coming in.
Everything in its right place…
When you have your own creation station set up, it provides a sense of ease. It doesn’t have to be spotless and perfect, that’s not the true aim. Lived-in is still a good status.
Having all the conditions to be right or ripe is not necessary to begin creating.
If the sparks of ideas and inspiration are shooting fireworks for you, fly with it!
No question, just go!
Let’s consider that we are creating our inner landscape and mirroring that internal process outwardly to our external spheres. Whatever is going on within ourselves becomes what is projected out to the world. Why not try it the other way around? Meaning we could even try making adjustments or changing our physical surroundings — our home, office, studio space — to see if that has a good influence on our mental clarity and focus. I believe so. Finding this crossing where the mental and physical spaces meet is key in keeping a balance in all our activities. It’s a point of calibration. Be in your center, spruce it up, move things around, Fengh Shui and enjoy creating that designated space!
DEDICATE : TIME
Ask yourself if you are truly committed to honing your craft. Have you allotted the time slots in your schedule to fit your practice? Do you engage in collaborative conversations with peers, other artists? Are you dedicated to investing in yourself? What are the barriers you believe are holding you back?
If you are a dancer, dance hard! If you are a painter, splash paint! A singer, sing your heart out!
As individual artists it is important to take the time to check-in with ourselves and reflect on how we value our own work, which ultimately is most important. If thoughts of doubt or uncertainty come into the frame, it would behoove you to examine why and where that perspective could stem from. We are our personal best worst critics after all. Even so, it is good practice to assess our creations with healthy feedback.
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” ~ Book of Proverbs
Being within a community of artists would certainly be valuable in gaining more insight on different disciplines, processes, and pure exposure to what wonders we all create for the world. At first it may be intimidating to open up to a new network of people for fear of judgement. Though when you do find that circle that is warm, welcoming, and feels right, the set becomes fertile soil for the artist to be able to root down, grow and eventually blossom into their own. It’s beautiful when the vibes are tuned in harmony and the hive mind arises.
How can we maximize the hours of the day to make the most with our creativity?
So the dirty dishes in the sink begin to rink a stink. The laundry is a mountain to sort through, or you are totally out of undies for today. Way to go, commando!
Of course, we would rather spend our free time doing all the things that light us up, as we damn well please and should. For some, maybe the demanding day job gets in the way. Others, a full family schedule with children, parents and partners to take care of. Or other obligations, what have you. Option D: All of the above…
We each have unique stations in life that call us to duty. It is understandable how this may lead to seemingly less and less time to be able to dig our hands deep in our creative flow. However, it isn’t impossible to accomplish all that we desire to do.
Carve out the time. Look over your calendar, morning, noon, night, anywhere in between, and work in time to practice, even when you feel uninspired or unmotivated. Build the muscle memory needed to advance your skills. This applies in any practice. All the great masters did not attain their levels without putting forth the effort and energy. Forming good habits will carry you and your craft forward and up to the next degree. Here I am stretching my rusty writing muscles to see what my baseline is at this phase. It’s been a while. After long periods of not using muscle groups, they will begin to atrophy and waste. Get the motion going and the circulation flowing.
Start at any point… the point is just start.
DRIVE : FAR OUT
“I AM THE VEHICLE FOR CHANGE.” ~ Me/YouDRIVE!
The open road is calling and ready for new adventures to be created!
This part is entirely up to YOU.
Your Art. …
Seeing beauty in every moment of creation is the essence of why art exists.
To authentically embody and express through art form is the pinnacle.
I desire to capture those moments caught in my perception, so I can feel like I am holding on to life much longer than it takes for it to dissipate through my senses. I aim to turn around and translate it with the tools I have on hand, hoping another being will see what I see. It is certainly worth all the trials.
Keep a journal. Document. Photograph. Record it. Commit it to memory.
There is an infinite supply of good ideas floating in the collective ether. When inspiration lands in our midst, it would be wise to court it with intent to bring the fantastic idea to life.
Connect…
DESIGNATE : SPACE DEDICATE : TIME DRIVE : FAR OUT
Sending us off with good intent, that we find our groove again. May this be a space of inspiration, growth and development, and collective regeneration. Thank You for Being Here. Peace + Love. rjx

GetResponse vs ConvertKit
New Post has been published on https://entrepreneurnut.com/getresponse-vs-convertkit/
GetResponse vs ConvertKit
Tumblr media
GetResponse vs ConvertKit can be a tricky choice because they both have such similar features at first glance. However, there are some key differences between them, which means that one might be more suited to you than the other.
And choosing the wrong one could limit your business growth or lead you to waste a lot of money. That’s why this article will be a complete comparison between the two to help you make the right choice for your business.
Also, I found it interesting that both options are affiliate-friendly, which isn’t always the case. But I’ll cover that in more detail later on.

GetResponse vs ConvertKit Overview
In this article, we will take a complete look at what both of these pieces of software have to offer. This includes their features, pricing, and much more.
Introducing GetResponse
GetResponse has been around for what feels like forever. The founder, Simon Grabowski, founded it in 1999, but it has become one of the most popular email marketing tools on the internet since then.
The funny thing about GetResponse is that when Simon first founded the software, it was just meant to be an internal solution for one of his other businesses. Later on, he realized that GetResponse could be a business itself and started turning it into a product.
Today GetResponse has a whopping 350,000 customers.
GetResponses’ core features include:
Newsletter
Behavior-based automation sequences/Workflows
Email autoresponders
Landing and Sales page builder
Forms and pop-ups
List management
CRM
Sales funnels
Webinars
GetResponse is one of the best choices for business owners and marketers looking for an all-in-one platform.
It allows its users to build an entire marketing system that they can use to generate, convert and engage their leads. How it does that, I’ll talk about in more detail later on.

Introducing ConvertKit
ConvertKit hasn’t been around for anywhere near the amount GetResponse has. Nathan Barry founded the platform in 2013, but it has also gained popularity fast in recent years.
And although not quite as popular as GetResponse, the platform still has an impressive 34,000 customers. Not bad.
One of the reasons why it grew in popularity so fast is because of its usability. When it was founded, it was one of the first autoresponders that were particularly easy to use. However, since then, most autoresponders (including GetResponse) have caught up on the trend, and therefore, also invested a lot of time and money into making their platforms more user-friendly also.
ConvertKit’s core features include:
Email marketing
Automations
Commerce
Creator Pro
Email Designer
Email sign up forms
Integrations
It brands itself as the go-to email marketing platform for digital creators and bloggers. Some of the ways it does this is through specialized templates for these particular business types, and also providing the core tools they will need.
Try ConvertKit Here
GetResponse Features and Benefits
Let’s start with GetResponse, and look at what features the platform offers.
What GetResponse Has That ConvertKit Does Not Have
GetResponse has been around for almost 14 years longer. Therefore, it’s to be expected that it has some features that ConvertKit doesn’t have.
And, GetResponse doesn’t disappoint, as you can see below.
Webinars
The first feature that GetResponse has that ConvertKit doesn’t is webinars.
GetResponse has a truly complete webinar feature built-in that lets you host pre-recorded and live webinars. ConvertKit doesn’t have this feature at all, so you’d have to integrate several software pieces to get it.
In my opinion, this is slightly surprising because I would have thought that a lot of “bloggers and digital creators” would also want to run webinars for their audience.
Better Landing Page Builder and More Templates
GetResponse has a landing page builder that offers more flexibility. This is because it has more elements, i.e., functions, and is drag and drop, while ConvertKit isn’t.
Plus, it also has many more templates with a lot more variety in styles. This means that it appeals to a wider range of businesses.
That’s not all… GetResponse also offers more customization when it comes to structuring your pages and customizing the SEO settings.
The only part where GetResponse’s landing page builder can improve in my opinion is the mobile optimization. While it’s perfectly capable of optimizing the pages for visitors on mobile devices, I find that the process isn’t the easiest.
Still, in terms of landing pages, it’s a win for GetResponse.
Better Email and Automation Builder
While they both have similar functionality, GetResponse also is superior when it comes to the email and automation builder.
Again, one of the main reasons for this is that GetResponse has a drag and drop builder for the emails and automation workflows. This makes it easier to use and visualize what exactly you’re building.
ConvertKit, on the other hand, has some nice templates for emails too, but no drag and drop editor. The same goes for the automation sequences, which also makes it a little harder to edit them. Plus, GetResponse also has more triggers to help you send more targeted emails.
Conversion Funnel
One of the features where GetResponse outdoes pretty much every other autoresponder on the market, is their conversion funnel feature.
This feature allows you to visualize your entire sales funnel from the point where they first visit your landing page, to them making purchases and becoming repeat customers. The cool thing is that GetResponse gives you a huge selection of templates for every step of the process to make your life easier.
You can also manage your entire sales funnel from this feature which is pretty cool too.
Plus, another excellent thing about GetResponse’s conversion funnel is that it gives you detailed analytics. For example, it shows you the ROI of the entire sales funnel, which you can use to make better management decisions.
GetResponse CRM
GetResponse isn’t only a monster when it comes to helping you generate leads. It also helps you manage and convert them with a dedicated CRM feature that ConvertKit doesn’t have. Again, the cool thing about its CRM is how visual it is; you can drag leads from one phase to another to easily keep an overview.
Plus, with tools like contact scoring, GetResponse helps you make the best decisions.
Other Features
GetResponse really does have an impressive number of features.
It would take too long to explain them all, but here’s a list of everything else that is only available in GetResponse:
Web Push Notifications
Google ads creator and management
Facebook ads creator and management
Social ads creator
Done for you lead magnets (Marketing niche)
Live chat support
You can find out more about all the GetResponse features in my article here.
GetResponse Pros
Landing pages, sales funnels, and webinars help you generate leads
Powerful CRM and Marketing automation to help you convert your leads
Very easy to use as all features are visual and drag and drop
A rich selection of templates
An impressive all-in-one marketing system
GetResponse Cons
It can be a little overwhelming because of the number of features
Landing page mobile optimization isn’t the easiest
Try GetResponse 30 Day Free Trial
What GetResponse Is Particularly Good At
GetResponse is particularly good at helping customers build an entire marketing funnel that promotes their business.
There isn’t any other autoresponder that comes with so many tools to help you generate leads.
Plus, with the average ROI of email marketing being around $44 for every $1 spent, you’ll want to funnel as many leads as you can into your list. And GetResponse helps you do exactly that.
GetResponse Ease of Use
GetResponse is one of the easiest to use autoresponders out there.
Every single feature inside of GetResponse is drag and drop and laid out visually with bright colors to make everything easy for you.
That being said, it does have a bit of a learning curve, due to the large amount of features it comes with. However, you’ll likely soon get the hang of it quickly, then have a huge list of very useful features at your fingertips.
GetResponse Deliverability Rates
Deliverability rates are another area where GetResponse performs incredibly well.
Studies have shown that GetRespnse has industry-leading deliverability rates with around 99% of emails sent through their system actually getting delivered.
Who Is GetResponse Good For
GetResponse is great for the following businesses:
Ecommerce stores
Service-based businesses
Info-product vendors
Affiliate marketers (GetResponse has no problems with users participating in affiliate marketing)
I also think it can work especially well for service-based businesses with high-value leads. This is because they can use the sales funnel, CRM, and marketing automation to convert their customers.
However, GetResponse’s tools can also be used for a wide range of other businesses, particularly any that fall into the categories I listed above.
Try GetResponse 30 Day Free Trial
ConvertKit Features and Benefits
GetResponse set the standard pretty high, but let’s take a look at how ConvertKit compares.
What ConvertKit Has That GetResponse Does Not Have
ConvertKit doesn’t actually have too many features, which GetResponse doesn’t. This is because it aims to be a simpler solution for a smaller market instead of an all-in-one software targeting most small businesses.
However, I still managed to pick out a few, which I have explained below.
Some Ease Of Use Benefits
The key word here is “some.”  GetResponse, of course, is a lot more visual.
However, ConvertKit has a straightforward dashboard and automations. This may make it easier for you to keep an overview, and you will feel less overwhelmed. Plus, ConvertKit also lets you create tags anywhere inside of the app, which is pretty cool.
GetResponse, on the other hand, only lets you create those in the automation workflows section.
Newsletter Referral System
This is only available on ConvertKit’s highest plan, but it’s basically a free SparkLoop account. Using it, you can create referral campaigns for your email list and let your audience grow it for you. This is quite a cool feature/add-on because SparkLoop costs like $29 per month by itself. However, you only get this on the $59 per month plan.
Still, it’s pretty nice and something that GetResponse doesn’t have.
Better WordPress Plugin
ConvertKit has a brilliant WordPress plugin that you can also use to add tags, integrate forms, etc.
GetResponse’s plugin, on the other hand, is basic and even has quite a lot of bugs. This is also reflected in the WordPress plugin store reviews, and I would not recommend using it.
Doesn’t Charge For Duplicate Email Signups
GetResponse most other autoresponders that I know of, except SendLane, charge you twice if someone signs up two times with the same email address. This can happen if you have multiple lists with different optin forms, and a person subscribes to more than one of your lists with the same email address.
I had an issue with this at one point when I was using Aweber and I had a number of different offers on my blog. A lot of my site visitors were interested in more than one of my free lead-magnets, so they were opting to get my freebies. I set things up in this way as I wanted to keep and monitor different lists based on my free offers. In this case, I needed to then also monitor my subscribers and every few weeks clear out the duplicate email addresses manually so I wouldn’t get charged twice for them. It’s a bit of a pain, but not the end of the world.
ConvertKit Pros
Great WordPress plugin
Simple, easy to use interface
Good features for bloggers and digital creators
Doesn’t Charge For Duplicate Email Signups
ConvertKit Cons
 No webinars
No conversion funnel feature
Not as good landing pages, automation sequences, email creators, templates, etc.
No CRM

What ConvertKit Is Particularly Good At
ConvertKit is particularly good at simplicity and ease of use. Despite it not having the same drag and drop functionality, it helps users that might lack technical knowledge, but who will benefit by using email marketing.
ConvertKit does this by offering the most essential tools in an easy-to-use interface that almost anyone can understand.
ConvertKit Ease of Use
ConvertKit is easy to use because of how simple it is. It simply doesn’t have as many options as GetResponse, so you don’t have as many buttons on your screen. The options you do have on your screen are also bigger, so they are easier to recognize and move around the dashboard quickly.
You may prefer ConvertKit because of this, and if you don’t need all the features that GetResponse provides. Personally, I think that most businesses would be able to do a lot more with GetResponse, but that’s just my opinion.
ConvertKit Deliverability Rates
According to their website, ConvertKit also has a 99% deliverability rate. Or, at least they mention, “Last month ConvertKit has sent over 1 billion emails with a deliverability of over 99%”.
I wasn’t able to find other studies on ConvertKit’s deliverability to share with you in this article. But, they seem to have a lot of resources to help you get your emails delivered and in the right place.
Who Is ConvertKit Good For
ConvertKit’s tools are indeed pretty well suited for bloggers and digital creators.
If you look at those groups’ needs, you’ll find that ConvertKit meets most of them. Plus, it is also easy to use because of the simplicity.
So, ConvertKit is great for bloggers looking for simplicity and don’t want to use a more comprehensive tool like GetResponse. Based on my assumptions, I could imagine ConvertKit working well for digital creators in niches like food, fashion, interior design, etc.

GetResponse vs ConvertKit – Pricing
Now that we have taken a look at the features let’s look at the cost they come at.
GetResponse Cost
GetResponse comes with flexible pricing plans ranging from $15 to $99 per month for 1,000 subscribers. Plus, if you need something more custom, you can contact GetResponse’s support team for the “Max” plan.
The prices below are based on 1,000 subscribers. If you want to know the prices based on more subscribers then please see their pricing page here.
Basic ($15 per month)
This plan is perfect for beginners and includes:
Unlimited landing pages
Chats
Basic email marketing (Non-behavior automation, newsletters, etc.)
1 Sales funnel
Unlimited lead generation funnels
Facebook and Google ad creator
For a $15 per month plan, this plan is solid as it comes with basic email tools, and you can even sell your products.
Plus ($49 per month)
This plan has everything the previous one has, plus:
Contact scoring and tagging
Webinars with up to 100 attendees
Work with a team (up to 3 members)
5 Sales Funnels
5 Behavior-based automation workflows
5 webinar funnels
The $49 per month plan will be suited for more businesses. It comes with more sales funnels, better email marketing tools, and even webinars. Pretty impressive for a $49 per month plan.
Professional ($99 per month)
Everything in the previous plan, plus:
Work with 5 users
On-demand webinars
Paid webinars
Up to 300 attendees inside of the webinar
Unlimited sales funnels

ConvertKit Cost
ConvertKit has three main pricing plans; free, creator, and creator pro. Below, I’ve explained them all, but keep in mind the prices named are for up to 1,000 subscribers.
 Free ($0 per month)
ConvertKit’s free plan is pretty limited. While you can use their basic landing page builder and send email broadcasts, you can’t use automation sequences.
While this plan may be enough to get you started, it probably won’t be the best choice because you can’t even automate the process.
 Creator ($29 Per Month)
ConvertKit’s creator plan is what I’d assume to be the most popular plan.
Here you can get everything in free, plus:
Sell digital products
Automation sequences/Workflows (or funnels, as ConvertKit calls them)
Get a free migration from any other tool.
This is pretty decent for a $29 per month plan, although it still doesn’t quite offer the number of features that GetResponse has.
Creator Pro ($59 Per Month)
Finally, ConvertKit’s creator pro plan comes with everything the platform has to offer.
That means everything in creator plus:
Facebook custom audiences
Newsletter referral system
Subscriber scoring
Advanced reporting

Final Thoughts – GetResponse vs ConvertKit – Which Is Best?
As you have seen throughout this article, both GetResponse and ConvertKit have an impressive list of features.
However, GetResponse does have quite a few more, and their pricing is a little more flexible to suit more types of businesses. Therefore, if I would pick a winner overall, it would have to be GetResponse, because of the significant differences in features.
GetResponse have also been around for a lot longer, and have also piled a considerable amount of money into improving the usability of their products a few years ago. To me, this shows that the company is committed to evolving their business and they do actually care about their customers. If you want to try them out for yourself then you can get a free 30-day GetResponse trial here, no credit card required.

Basic Reputation Management for Better Customer Service

Basic Reputation Management for Better Customer Service
Tumblr media
The Internet can be a great connector, but sometimes, it acts as a barrier.
Your local business receives a negative review, and the slate-colored words on the bland white screen can seem so cold, remote. You respond, but the whole interaction feels stilted, formal, devoid of face-to-face human feelings, like this:
Tumblr media
At least when a complaint occurs via phone, the tone of a customer’s voice tells you a bit more and you can strive to respond with an appropriate vocal pitch, further questions, soothing, helping, maybe resolving. Still, if you’re working off a formal script, the human connection can be missed:

It’s a win when a customer complains in person to your staff, but only if those employees have been empowered to use their own initiative to solve problems. Employees who’ve been tasked with face-to-face interactions but lack permission to act fully human when customers complain will miss opportunity after opportunity to earn the loyalty your brand would give almost anything to amass. Two people can be looking one another in the eye, but if one has to act corporate instead of human, too much formality ensures forgettable experiences:

What you really want as a local business owner is to have the power to turn those chilly black-and-white words on a review profile into a living color interaction. You want to turn one-way messaging into front porch conversation, with the potential for further details, vital learnings, resolution, and deeply informal human connection with a neighbor, like this:

The great barrier: reviews
Seventeen years into my journey as a local SEO, I’ve come to realize that my favorite businesses — the ones I’ve come to patronize with devotion — are the ones with owners and staff who treat me with the least formality. They’ve creatively established an environment in which I felt liked, heard, regarded, trusted, and appreciated, and I’ve responded with loyalty. It’s really a beautiful thing, when you step back and think about it.
For me, it’s small local farmers who epitomize informal neighborliness in business. They:
Do their best to grow high quality food
Know me by name
Know my dietary preferences
Let me roam around their properties for enjoyment’s sake
Trust me to pay via an honor system
Ask me if there’s additional produce I’d like them to grow
Want to know how I’m cooking their produce
Tell me other ways I might prepare their produce
Have nice conversations with me about a variety of topics
Am I describing a business here, or a friend? The line is blurry. I’ve hugged some farmers. Prayed for a few when they’ve had hard times. I may have first met them for monetary transactions, but we’ve built human relationships, and the entire way I relate to this sector is defined by how the farmers go about their business.
With a few exceptions, most local brands can work at building less formality and more neighborliness into their in-person customer service. Think about it. In most settings, your customers would enjoy being treated with the respectful interest and kindness that invites camaraderie.
But we hit a strange barrier when the medium is online reviews. If we learned to read and write in a formal school setting, we may unconsciously ascribe a certain stiffness to textual exchanges. We’re worried about getting lower marks for making a mistake, and we’re aware of being in front of a public audience in writing review responses. We’re missing vital communicative cues, like the facial expression of the customer, their tone of voice, and their body language.
On our side of the equation, we can’t shake hands, or physically demonstrate our willingness to help, or even signal our approachability with a smile.
To tell the truth, reviews aren’t a great substitute for in-person communication, but they are here to stay, and there’s a certain amount of fear on both sides of many transactions that builds up the layers of the barrier, like this:
Tumblr media
What can be done to bring the two parties closer together, so that they are at least leaning over the same fence to talk?
Create a workflow for spotting single and aggregate review cues
The easiest way I know of to get started with a workflow surrounding reviews is via a very intuitive product like Moz Local. Basic components are built into the dashboard, offering a simple jumping off point into the complex world of reputation management.
Tumblr media
The screenshot above shows a portion of the functions Moz Local offers for review management. The organization of the various data widgets create a bridge for getting closer to customers and engaging in real, meaningful dialogue with them in an atmosphere of goodwill, rather than fear. Let’s break it down by tasks.
1. Seek cues in single reviews with ongoing alerts
Tumblr media
To enter into a conversation, you have to know when it starts. The right-side column of the Moz Local dashboard keeps a running feed of your incoming reviews on a variety of platforms, as well as incoming Google Q&A questions. On a daily basis, you can see who is starting a conversation about your business, and you can tell whether customers most recent customers were having a good or bad experience by looking at the star rating.
Make it your practice to click first on any review in this feed if it’s received a 3-star rating or less, and see how much information a customer has shared about the reason for their less-than-perfect rating, as in this fictitious example:.
Because the reviews are timestamped, you may have the ability to connect a customer’s poor experience with something that happened at your place of business on a specific day, like being understaffed, having an equipment failure, or another problem.
In fact, a second view in the dashboard makes it immediately obvious if the reviews you received on a particular day had lower star ratings than you’d like to see:
Tumblr media
If you know a customer’s complaints can be tied to an issue, this gives you something more and better to say than just “I’m sorry,” when you respond. For example, broken equipment leading to a cold meal is something you can explain in asking the customer to let you make it up to them.
2. Seek cues in aggregated sentiment
Knowing whether you have just one customer with a single complaint or multiple customers with the same complaint is vital quality control intelligence. Very often, Google reviews are particularly brief in comparison to reviews on other platforms, and you need to be able to take a large body of them to see if there are shared topical themes. The Review Analysis widget in the Moz Local dashboard does exactly this for you:
Tumblr media
In this view, you can see up to 100 of the most common words your customers are using when they review you, the percentage of the reviews containing each word, and the star rating associated with reviews using each word. You can toggle the data for each column.
In our fictitious example, the business owner could see that when food is served cold, it’s yielding very poor review ratings, but that, fortunately, this is a complaint contained in only 1.7% of total reviews. Meanwhile, the business owner could notice that 2% of reviews with a 3.8 star rating (only a moderately good experience) are revolving around the phrase “service”. The owner can click on each word to be shown a list of the reviews containing that term to help them identify what it is about the service that’s diminishing customer satisfaction.
The figures in the above screenshot are all pretty low, and likely represent only mild concerns for the business. If, however, the business owner saw something like this, that would change the narrative:
Tumblr media
Here, 12.2% of the reviews mentioning the restaurant’s veggie burgers are associated with a very poor 2.0 rating. The owner would need to dive into this list of reviews and see just what it is customers don’t like about this dish. For example, if many of these reviews mentioned that the burgers lacked flavor, had bland condiments, or buns that fell apart, these would be cues that could lead to changing a recipe. Again, this would give the owner something genuine to say in response to dissatisfied customers. Ideally, it would lead to the customer being invited to come again for something like a free taste test of the new recipe.
Whatever details the review sentiment analysis function yields for your business, use it with the intention of having a two sided conversation with your customers. They complain, in aggregate, about X, you research and implement a solution, and finally, you invite them to experience the solution in hopes of retaining that customer, which is typically far less costly than replacing them.
3. Grade your business at a glance
Tumblr media
These two views in the Moz Local dashboard allow you to analyze two key, related aspects of your business at a glance.
The Average Rating view is the fastest way to grade yourself on aggregate customer satisfaction. This example shows a business with little to fear, with 96% of customers rating the business at 4-or-more stars and only 4% having a three-stars-or-less experience. In terms of having happy customers, this fictitious company is doing a great job.
However, the Reviews Reply rate needs some work. They’re only replying to 1% of their overall reviews, 0% of their 2-to-5-star reviews, and only 21% of their 1-star reviews. The business is doing an excellent job offline, but unless they improve their online responsiveness, their average review rating could begin to decrease over time.
In sum, a workflow which investigates reviews singly and in aggregate tells the story or customer satisfaction across time, and gives the business owner a clearer narrative to tap into and write from in responding.
Make optimal response rates and two-way conversation your goal
As a local business owner, you have many demands on your time. That being said, my pro tip for you is to respond to every review you possibly can. There’s no scenario in which it’s smart to ignore a conversation any customer starts, whether positive or negative. Just as you wouldn’t ignore a percentage of your incoming calls or customers walking around your business, you shouldn’t ignore them online.
If thinking of reviews as a two-way conversation is a bit of new concept to you, consider that most review platforms enable people to edit their reviews for a reason: many of your customers think of the reviews they write as living documents, and are willing to update them to journal subsequent interactions that made a scenario better or worse. My own research has shown this to be true, and multiple studies have reached the conclusion that the majority of customers will continue doing business with brands that resolve their complaints.
This means that local businesses can manage a customer journey that follow this pattern for negative reviews, much of the time:
Tumblr media
In black-and-white review land, this might look like this:
Tumblr media
Or, when a customer is happy to begin with, offering extra incentives to come again while thanking the customer for taking the time to write their review could look like this:
Tumblr media
Here, a conversation starter about salsa has been turned into a two-way dialog guaranteed to make the customer feel heard and valued. They’ve been invited back, their opinion has been solicited, and both the existing customer and all potential future customers reading Mary’s response can see that this is a restaurant with a lively, on-going relationship with its diners.
Takeaway: don’t just say “thanks” to every customer who positively reviews your business. Seek cues in their words that show what they care about and tie it to what you care about. Find common ground to further engage them and bring them back again.
How big of a priority are reviews, really?
I’ve consulted with so many local business owners over the years — everybody from beekeepers to bookkeepers. It’s a plain fact that all small business owners are extremely busy, and not all of them instantly take a shine to the idea of having a lot of little two-way conversations going on with their customers in their review profiles.
Statistics can change minds on this, when it comes to figuring out how much of a priority review analysis and management should be. Consider these findings from the Moz State of the Local SEO Industry survey of over 1,400 people involved in the marketing of local businesses:
Tumblr media
Respondents placed aspects of Google reviews (count, sentiment, owner responses, etc.) as having the second greatest impact on Google’s local rankings.
Tumblr media
90% of respondents agree that the impact of reviews on local pack rankings is real.
Tumblr media
Nearly 14% of those marketing the largest local enterprises realize that more resources need to be devoted to review management. Yet, in another section of the survey, agency workers placed review management in a lowly 11th place in terms of something they are requested to help their clients with. Learn more about these trends by downloading the free State of the Local SEO Industry Report for 2020.
Statistics like these indicate that there is a maturing awareness of the vital role reviews play in running a successful local business. Management of all aspects of reviews deserves priority time.
Make a habit of reading reviews between the lines
Moz Local software will ensure you know whenever single reviews come in, and help you slice and dice review data in ways that tell customer service narratives in aggregate. If you’re already using this software, your first steps of reputation management are just waiting to be taken with ease and simplicity.
But to get the most of any review management product, you’ll need to bring a human talent to the dashboard: your ability to read between the lines of review text that can be brief, vague, sharp, and sometimes unfair.
With the exception of spam, there’s a real person on the other side of each text snippet, and for the most part, their shared desire is to be treated well by your business. Even if a review stems from a customer you can’t identify or one who communicates disappointment rudely, you can take the high road by making a mental image of yourself standing face-to-face with someone you highly value who is voicing a problem. Respond from that good place, with the conscious intention of improved neighborly communication and you may be pleasantly surprised by your ability to transform even the most dissatisfied person into a happier, more loyal customer.
I’ll close today with an excerpt of a very long real-world review which I’ve truncated. I’ve underlined the cues and the rewards I’m hoping you’ll spot and see as you strengthen your commitment to review management as a key component of your customer service strategy.
Tumblr media
The new Moz Local plans — Lite, Preferred, and Elite — are designed to offer more features and flexibility to better meet the needs of local businesses and their marketers. Customers on any of the new plans can now monitor reviews via alerts, and depending on the plan, respond to reviews and take advantage of social posting. It’s never been more important to actively engage and listen to the needs and concerns of your current customers — and potential customers will take notice.
