I need to ramble more about Esteban Flores, because everything about this character and his arc seem as though it was tailor-made for me and specifically designed to make me absolutely feral.

This going below the cut, both because I do not want to spoil the entire show for my friend who is think of watching Elena of Avalor and because I go full-on apologist here and I feel like that will annoy some people.

Imagine making the absolute worst mistake than anyone could possibly make, because you are 18 and scared and stupid and tired of being ignored. And it results in you losing your family and your freedom and what little self-respect you had left because you know all of this is very much your own fault.

 And so you proceed to spend the next 41(!) years eking out a miserable existence in an oppressive state. Upon fear for your life, you are forced to be the reluctant right-hand of the evil witch-queen who conquered your country, killed your aunt and uncle and trapped your cousin in magical prison. In spite of this, you nevertheless do everything within your limited power trying to hold the kingdom together and make sure the people don't starve, because the queen certainly doesn't care about anything except greedily bleeding your country dry.

And no exaggeration, this is just what canon explicitly gives us outright in the pilot. Like that's not even getting into head canons/interpretations/common sense of what exactly this sort of life entailed for you. Because this is a children's show so there's only so much they will let us imply about living under that kind of system. Especially as a young, attractive, terrified person who is the last living member of the previous royal family who is likely being kept alive partly as a combination trophy/punching bag for the evil queen (even if the show never actually states this outright).

And then by some miracle, what's left of your family comes back after all this time. The evil queen is overthrown, partly because you yourself finally stood up to her at a critical moment. You and your country are finally free again, and what's more, you and your family are finally together again after over 4 decades. But you still feel like an outsider--partly because you always were an outsider in your family even in the better times and partly because  over the past 41(!) years, time stood still for all of them except you.

And as a result, no one ever cares to ask what those 41 years were like for you or even just if you’re doing okay. Not only because your family can’t even begin to comprehend what it must have been like, but also because they don’t care to even *try* to understand. Because the narrative has decided that everyone else’s respective traumas is worth way more than your own.  (Though tbf the narrative really doesn’t dwell much on anyone’s trauma in general but yours gets especially neglected , except to briefly play it for laughs or to remind you that your trauma is *your own fault and only your own*).

For a little while, life is pretty okay. It’s weird not having to watch your step every instant to make sure you’re not putting a toe out of line. And so you never really fully break out of your “survival mode” conditioning, making sure that you are still considered important and valuable enough to keep around.

But all the while, you know that your past—and especially your terrible little secret—is eventually going to come back to haunt you. And it does. First via blackmail and then via the return  of the evil witch-queen herself. Fortunately, she is defeated for good before she can take avenge your “betrayal of her” but you still have to deal with seeing the ghost from the past who terrorized you for 41(!) years.

And then, your secret finally comes out in the open and you are disowned by your family—the family you *just* got back a few years ago—for an admittedly super bad decision that you made over four decades ago and have regretted ever since.  Rather than face the rest of your life in isolation (as though you didn’t already have enough of that during the previous regime), you escape before you can be sent into exile. This puts you directly in the path of *another* terrifying, evil magical milf who you are forced to ally yourself with. Because you have 40+ years of conditioning that when a woman like that says “jump,” you say “how high?” if you are to have any hope of survival.  Especially given that the only people who could’ve protected you from her are the family and friends who have just definitively washed their hands of you.

Despite this, you are still trying to seek your cousin’s forgiveness and to protect her in the little ways that you can. But you are constantly getting rebuffed over and over again, and if anything, your attempts at reconciliation only seem to make your cousin angrier, and she now hates you just as much as—if not MORE than—the woman who actually murdered her parents.

Your cousin is so angry at you specifically that she actively ignores the greater threat of Witchy Milf 2.0, because she happens to see your face and is enraged. This ends up backfiring spectacularly for you both, though it does indirectly lead to the defeat of said Witchy Milf 2.0.

But guess what?  There’s no time to breathe or celebrate, because her defeat occurred during the successful summoning of a third power-mad, feminine-presenting magical humanoid and her allies. At least, this one treats you with some initial respect and actually gives you outright what you-think-you’ve-thought-you-always wanted. But she also turns your family and friends to stone in front of you as a warning of what’s to come if you dare to defy her.

But this time, you are finally done with this, have finally lost enough that you have paradoxically found your courage. You sacrifice yourself to save your cousin, and she is finally able to accept that you’ve sacrificed and changed enough that she can forgive you. And her forgiveness is so powerful and pure that it not only restores you to life but also undoes all the other evil magic. Together, you defeat this final enemy, paradoxically by banishing her to the same Underworld where your mistakes accidentally sent your aunt and uncle and her parents long ago.  Peace has been restored. You have returned for good and are finally secure in your family’s love.

And after all that, there are *still* people (both presumably in universe and in the fandom outside of it) who say it's too little, too late and that it would've been better for everyone if you'd simply stayed dead.

Like I'm just... are we really victim-blaming the character who has 45 years of unprocessed trauma and guilt (both survivor's guilt and guilt in general) because of a decision he made when his brain was still developing and he was being manipulated by an older, much more powerful person?

Bro you thought that worked with bts doesn't mean it will with seventeen) which wasn't common in the past or being able to film concerts with ease during the pandemic. Bighit clearly acknowledges that seventeen is a monster group in their own right I mean as you said, they break records and are 2nd behind bighits own group. They are EXTEMELY big in Japan. They are their own song makers, bang pd confirmed this when pleids was first announced in a press video so the fact people brush all of their achievements and statements because why, their streaming numbers are low?

And oohh such an interesting point as well! Very much i think the current mindset of kpop fans (or at least some) is that streaming is what equals success which to some degree, yes but as you said, many ignore the casual side of listening. People that find the song due to it being viral for whatever reason, a fancam getting popular like in the cass of hani from exid or whatever reason. Dwc is a great example and I saw those comments under their recent performance of that song and it makes me proud that the boys have a song like that. That it has its own "fanbase" quote on quote with how well loved that song simply is and well known. You don't have to have fans doing crazy streaming to be considered "popular", I mean I could give more examples but I don't wanna make this too long nor cause unwanted fandrama lol. Those casual listeners are extremely important and powerful I mean brave girls is a great recent example of that I think! It very much does seem like that when looking at the views, its mainly the core fanbase which isn't bad nor should we feel bad for not having crazy numbers. They seem more organic if that makes sense? Plus I agree, we can stream and can explain how it works, clearing up confusion about it like no emojis don't take down views and yes youtube does take away views but that is due to it making sure it isn't bots only viewing the video. Explaining that streaming should be done with a chill mindset and its ok if you don't stream. But hey, maybe we're too weird of fans to think like this fjajdjajs.

But some few updates! Seventeen is back on Instagram, fully everyone is posting away. Makes me happy hehe m, a bit funny it took so long for them to comeback but am happy nonetheless. The interactions that seungkwan does makes me super soft. Seventeen are also back with doing proper promotions so yay (also pledis is S Wording people over the mingyu issue finally so bless). and yeah that's absolutely true, pledis focused on kr promotions/fanbase first and foremost (and then expanded to Japan and is now looking toward the US/western promos in general). which i agree was a good thing. i think some companies get too greedy with wanting a group to be ~internationally famous~ that they ignore their Korean fanbase a bit too much and I've seen groups that have failed bc of it, so I'm glad that didn't happen w SVT

and yeah in terms of merch I'm genuinely grateful as an american that for this cb at least there was a US distributor which made things super convenient but wtf is going on w hybes merch those water bottles are not it TT it just sucks to see bc it's clear that at least as far as merch goes hybe doesn't have an interest in like. doing market research to figure out what carats want. which is funny bc they don't even have to start from scratch they could literally just ask pledis?? and tbh what's sad is i don't think hybe is like. purposefully trying to sabotage SVTs merch from my limited perspective i get the feeling they treat all their groups merch like that :( but since us carats have seen in the past what kind of merch we're capable of getting it's disappointing to see such a downgrade. and like tbf pledis's merch decisions were never perfect like that time they tried to sell replicas of the SVT rings and carats were rightfully pissed bc those are something the members earned, not something to be bought. and i also don't think hybe never has or never will make good merch, I'm sure they're fully capable of it. but it just seems obvious that they've put WAY less if any effort into understanding both the market (ie carats) and seventeens brand compared to pledis so like of course most carats aren't gonna like it :/ i really hope they step up their game and do better research or bring ppl onto the team who better understand svt's brand

and yeah i very much agree with everything u said about streaming! tbh i think this mindset isn't as uncommon as you might think, I've actually met a fair number of kpop fans who are critical of streaming culture but as u know there also are a lot of ppl who are really into it and those ppl tend to have the loudest voices. and unfortunately part of streaming culture is that if you question the methods or don't participate you must be a bad fan or secretly an anti or something ridiculous like that. so ppl who aren't into streaming culture end up learning to not be too vocal about it bc of how bad the backlash can be

I'm glad to see insta line (+ now dk!!) active again. i still wonder why pledis made them stop using their ind instas, like I know all the theories people have as to why but honestly none that I've seen seem to fully make sense. it will probably be one of those things where we'll just never know the full story. but i digress!! regardless of the reason I'm just glad to have them back after all this time ^^

as always I'm answering this a bit late so you may have seen already but i did get the physical album! it was a birthday gift so i only got it the other day, but according to my mom it arrived almost immediately after the album was released so as i said before, I'm very grateful for the US shop this time around ;-; as for the songs usually it's easy for me to pick one or two favorites but this time around it's genuinely a 4-way tie between heavens cloud and all the unit songs TT (i also love anyone and RTL, they're just slightly lower on the list in terms of preference if u get what i mean). i really hope some time in the future we get some kind of performance or special video or something for heavens cloud, since so many carats and the members themselves seem to really love it. i also think it's a song that brings up such beautiful imagery that it would be a shame if it never got any type of visual representation, you know? I'm also really curious to see a performance of wave, since iirc the members said the choreo is a lot more laid back/different from other perf unit choreos?? + that song also evokes such great imagery for me that like... makes feel like it needs some kind of movement so I'm just itching to see a performance. kind of like... even if i didn't know it was a perf unit song i would think it would be great to choreograph to if that makes any sense dhfkf. but yeah overall i think it's just a really solid album, as expected from summerteen ^^

Tooooo lazy and tired to come up with a title, sorry.  BUT I bring you an unprompted MerGucket AU ficlet.  Angie finds out that Stan’s helped out shady people in the past, and I still suck at writing kisses but tbf, that might be because I’ve never had one of my own so.  Anyways, hope you guys like it~

               “So, uh, this is the super secret place you wanted to show me, huh?” Stan asked.  He and Angie were beached on the shore of a small, secluded lagoon.  Angie flicked her tail excitedy.

               “Yeah!  This lil place is ‘bout my favorite one to go to.  My secret spot.  Ain’t it great?” she asked.  Stan shrugged and picked up a tiny, rounded stone from the pebbly beach.

               “I mean, I guess.  But I’ve been here before,” he said, idly flicking the pebble away.  It skipped on the teal water.  

               “What?  But I thought ya haven’t left the colony since ya moved in,” Angie said.  She scooched closer to him, her scales making a rasping sound against the ground.  

               “It was when I was human,” Stan explained.

               “Fidds never mentioned y’all comin’ here.”  Angie sounded put out.

               “This was before we hired him.  Back when Ford and I were trying to save up the money to buy the Stan O’War. We were scopin’ out the area for-” Stan stopped.  His blood ran cold.

               “For what?” Angie asked.  

               For merfolk hunters.  But Stan wasn’t going to tell Angie that. Angie cocked her head with interest.

               “For what?” she repeated.

               “…You don’t wanna know,” Stan said shiftily, looking away.  Angie gaped.

               “Ya can’t just say that and expect me to drop it!  Come on, what were ya scopin’ the lagoon out for?” she wheedled. Stan shook his head.  His heart stopped as his ears picked up on the sound of pebbles clinking against each other, a few yards away.

               “Okay, we have to go,” he said abruptly, grabbing Angie’s hand.  She pulled her hand out of his grasp.

               “What is with ya today?” she asked.

               “Seriously, Angie, it isn’t safe here,” Stan hissed.  

               “No, I’ve been comin’ here since I was a guppy.  Granted, I ain’t been out here in a bit but-”  Angie was cut off by a shadowy figure wrapping an arm around her torso and clamping a hand over her mouth.

               “Shit!”  Stan dove back into the water, narrowly avoiding a second person grabbing him. He surfaced cautiously.  Angie was struggling against her captors, the spines on her fins instinctively raised.  There were already obvious wounds on the men’s arms from her spines. But she wasn’t talking to the men, convincing them to let her go.  She had been gagged.

               She can’t sing her way outta it. Stan’s heart sunk.  He had been hoping she might be able to do that.  I’ve never tried to pull that trick with people who are actively tryin’ to kill me. But I don’t have a choice.  Stan cleared his throat.  

               “Hey, fellas,” he started hesitantly, finding the specific tremor in his voice he needed to convince people to do what he wanted.  “Why don’tchya let the nice lady go?”  The men stared at him dumbly.  “Seriously.  You don’t need to have her captive or whatever.  She’s fine livin’ in the ocean.  You can trust me.”  Slowly, the men lowered Angie to the ground.  One of them removed the gag from her mouth.  Angie glared at the men.

               “Put me back in the water,” she snarled.  Even though, as a mer, Stan was immune to a siren’s vocal commands, he shuddered from the power in her voice.  The men moved quickly, carefully sliding her into the bright waters of the lagoon.  “Now, leave.  Never come back.  Ever!” Angie’s voice echoed against the water. There was almost a tangible wave of power that washed over everyone.  The men ran out of the lagoon.  Angie whipped her head around to face Stan.  “Merfolk hunters?” she whispered, devastated.  

               “I said you wouldn’t wanna know.”

               “Merfolk hunters?  Stanley, how- how could ya?  Do you know what those people do?  They-they tear families apart, steal eggs, kill merfolk and display our scales and fins in their dwellin’s like- like trophies.”  Angie’s voice broke.  “Merfolk hunters almost got my big brother.”

               “What?”

               “Basstian.  He got tricked.  He fell in love with a human woman, but it was all a ploy fer- fer her to get a chance to kill and skin him.”

               “Angie, I- I had no idea,” Stan said, moving toward her.  He wrapped a hesitant arm around her shoulders.  “Look, when Ford and I scoped the area out, we- we really needed the money.  We needed to get out of our house.  And I swear, I had no clue what they did to merfolk.” Angie shook her head.

               “Would it have made a difference?  Would ya have turned it down?”  She stared at him.  “Be honest.”

               “Ford would have.  I- I wouldn’t,” Stan confessed.  Angie bit her lip.  

               “At least yer honest,” she said in a choked voice.

               “Angie, I’m- was Basstian really-”

               “Yes.  That’s why he don’t trust ya.  Or Ford. He don’t think it’s right fer merfolk to offer the plant to humans they love.”

               “…Love?” Stan asked.  Angie froze. “You’re not talkin’ ‘bout my situation. Are you?”  After a very long pause, she spoke.

               “M-Ma said she wanted to offer y’all the plant fer a few reasons.  One of ‘em bein’ the look in Fidds’ eyes and- and my eyes when we talked ‘bout the two of ya.  She ‘membered the heartbreak she almost went through, and didn’t want that fer us.”

               “You- you’re-” Stan stammered.  Angie nodded.  She leaned her head against him.  

               “Whatever, doesn’t matter.  You clearly don’t feel the same way, so,” she muttered.  Stan swallowed.  He cupped her chin and tilted her face towards him.  

               “What makes ya think that?” he asked quietly.  Angie blinked at him, her bright blue eyes catching light bouncing off the water.  Stan leaned down.  

               His lips met hers.
