@alltheladiesyouhate admittedly i haven't rewatched the moffat seasons as much as i have the rtd ones but the biggest difference i think that the rtd companions actually had lives. the opening sequence of the renewed show was rose and her going about her day. we learned more about her in the first 10 minutes of that one episode than we do amy and clara all of their seasons. same with martha in smith and jones. and donna partners in crime. we know these people's families and and interpersonal dynamics and get to know them as people seperate to the doctor. meanwhile moffat era companions are only people in relation to who they are to the doctor. moffat is so obsessed with mysteries and 'don't you want to keep watching to know what this is about' that he neglects to make characters compelling without that information. moffat cannot make a scene like the one in marthas brothers birthday party where the entire family starts arguing moments before martha reunites with the doctor.

not negating that chris eccleston had a bad time on dw and rightfully wouldn't want to work with that team again for his own sake (minus billie i assume), but i have reservations about people in fandom jumping on the "yeah rtd is a dick who's incredibly hated in television actually, it's just a big secret," train when i have never heard anything to that effect outside of this working relationship that ended poorly and that as far as im aware rtd has never spoken about, so it's still a relatively private affair (of which we know a scant few details/that rtd didn't stick up for eccleston when he needed that support). i mean, he might be the worst guy ever, i've never worked with him, but i don't think the people saying this have either, and i think it's way too easy for people to assume the worst and go looking for confirmation bias, because it can justify their own dislike of rtd as a showrunner or his return as pure "nostalgia baiting" (that's another post). but yeah, if i see one more person go "oh i just have a feeling he's probably an asshole actually and the fact that we know that eccleston doesn't like him (as if that's new news) confirms that" as a roundabout way of going actually his era of the show wasn't that good or that him coming back to the show is a mistake, im simply not taking that seriously. just say you don't like the writing or whatever, don't make up a guy to personally dislike. there'll be another showrunner after him.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say RTD was deliberately trying to tank dw. Your decisions from logistical standpoints are doomed by your own ego buddy. He may pull this off, sure, but I'd wager there's a higher chance he won't. As somebody who likes the show, I have an issue with this. As somebody who is aware of what has happened on his sets before, I have an issue with his two handed control. He can't be trusted to have a non toxic environment and Handily manages to make it so he can't be held accountable for that.

And I do know better, btw. He's not trying to tank the show, he's just got an ego the size of gallifrey. His way or the highway. Openly shade other people in press like a damn teenager on a playground. God forbid taking constructive criticism.

Again, I like this show. This is a problem for me. I don't care If he ruins himself, I'd get a kick out of it to be frank, but it's who (ha) he takes down with him with his awful business practices I'm worried about.

suffered through a rewatch of Power of Three and Dinosaurs on a Spaceship last night and I wanted to scream the entire time. I am nobody and have never run a 60-year-old television show. but. Chris Chibnall does not know how to write. he is bad at it. he is bad at it. who gave him control of the entirety of Doctor Who? why? he had Amy narrate the first and last scenes of Power of Three like she's in some kind of early-2000's romcom because he doesn't know how to write dialogue or how to show-not-tell. the last line of Power of Three sounds like a preteen who has no idea how to end her oneshot fanfic and I know this because I have been one and I would never have let 12-year-old me write a single episode of an actual show on tv. the Silurians are a crutch. the Doctor got sucked into a Wii game? Kate Lethbridge-Stewart has zero personality outside of the Brigadier. Brian is an empty, emotional-exposition robot. who let this man run the entire show for years, I want names and addresses-

How do people still not get that RTD and Moffat are really good friends who love and respect each other and actually enjoy working together? When they're not joking around on Instagram all they ever do is praise each other's work. there's just no resentment or spite in this relationship at all and yet I still see shit like "Moffat created River because he hates Rose and thinks he could do better". No, that's just fan factions projecting their own petty rivalries onto the creators and their work.

though comics tend to release to combat that in multi doctor stories where they jump through various alternate universes of themselves where the doctor sees themselves settled down with dr. grace holloway (for 8th dr multi doctor stories) and professor melody williams/river song (for 11th dr multi doctor stories) where in those cases, they are frightful of the concept settling down at all. [take note that both times, he settles down in the same house that he owns bc of that unit paycheck on the dl] so i am curious that with this new drs, the equivalent of this would be 13 14 15 being terrified of settling down with rose because they had grown past her as this point.

one of the shoddiest bits of the episode is that we do not know how sutekh and rubys mother intersect. obvi most finales dont reveal their final big bang until maybe the very end of part 1 but i’m running through the past in my mind and there’s always something that ties in… but now it just feels like two Things that do not relate but are being forced to. for some reason, unknown to viewers and characters (why does 15 think they’re related? what implies that?)

and since when does the doctor show up to unit to ask them to solve his mystery-of-the-season???? thats like if he asked them what bad wolf meant. put them in charge of figuring out the cracks in the universe. gave them his theories on the hybrid and didn’t use his own brain. especially with her being so easily recognizable that they laugh at him when he asks… did the man do no research? shouldn’t ruby recognize her, like martha recognized saxon!master by his voice?

atp. what is the point of ruby beyond being a mystery. very little characterization, all she is is a mystery and we’ve done that before with clara but there was a billion times more depth with her character and with her arc in s7, a notoriously mid season.

and it’s not even painted as ruby being the mystery, just her mother. 15 never seems to say, i want to help you with this because you are something strange too. i have to find out what you are. he scans her briefly and i get not wanting to repeat impossible girl/pregnant amy type obsession, but the doctor is obsessive! he says ruby is his best friend but WHY, and do you not care about how she’s fucked up, and why does she have the personality of cardboard but HASNT been reduced to her mystery.

the characters feel rushed and the story hasn’t had time to simmer and everything thus far has just been aggressively. mid.
