Tips from a Texan!
Drink more water than you think you’ll need. Trust me, you need more than you think. While watching the color of your urine is an excellent indicator also pay attention to your sugar cravings. Dehydration tends to set off more sugar cravings than normal so if you find yourself craving sweets more than you normally would that can be a much quicker indicator you’re dehydrated than your urine. (Not always as reliable but it happens for a lot of people! With less water your body can’t get energy out of storage as quickly so even though you have plenty of energy your cells aren’t getting as much so your brain starts sugar cravings in an attempt to get more energy even though the real problem is dehydration is the long and short of it.)
Also make sure to keep your electrolytes up too! Your body needs sodium, potassium, and other minerals to function just as much as water, and you’ll lose them through sweat and urine as well so too much water without intaking any electrolytes can still hurt you!
If you can put wet towels around your neck those can help a lot! There’s cooling towels you can buy online that actively stay cold for a while but if you can’t get any of those just a bit of wet cloth is better than nothing!
Take breaks as much as you can and keep the fans running! You’ll tire a lot easier. Also try to avoid direct sunlight. Even if it’s still hot in the shade the difference is STAGGERING.
Also depending on how much you HAVE to be in direct sunlight I’d recommend either sunscreen or lightweight but full body covering. I had to walk half an hour each way to the pharmacy yesterday and wore a breathable but long sleeved blue shirt and thin beige pants, I personally prefer to just stay covered since sweat can wash off sunscreen. Light colors will keep you cooler and the last thing you want is to get burnt! Hats are also great unless you’re me and would rather just deal with it bc you despise having things on your head. 😂 It was also remarkable how much walking on the side of the road that was in the shade made a difference, direct light is not your friend!
We’ve been dealing with these temps for weeks now in Texas so you have my utmost compassion. (It’s still morning but it will get up to 104 where I am later, I totally get it.) Best of luck to you all, may it pass quickly. ❤️

Thanks for the advice friend, I'll keep all of that in mind.

Strawberries in the Philippines: Cultivation, Production, Markets, and Health Benefits
Strawberries, known for their sweet taste and health benefits, have a notable presence in the Philippines, particularly in the mountainous regions where the climate is cooler. Here's a comprehensive overview of strawberries in the Philippines, covering cultivation, production, markets, health benefits, and other related aspects.
Cultivating strawberries in the Philippines involves several key steps;
. Climate and Soil: Strawberries prefer cooler climates and well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH (5.5 to 6.5). Raised beds and good irrigation are recommended.
. Planting: Strawberry runners or crowns are typically used for planting. Proper spacing and mulching are essential to protect plants and retain moisture.
. Care and Maintenance: Regular watering, weed control, and protection from pests and diseases are crucial. Strawberries require consistent care to ensure a good yield.
. Harvesting: They are usually harvested when they are fully red. This is generally done by hand to avoid damage to the fruit.
The Philippines is not among the world's largest producers of strawberries, but it has a growing market for both fresh strawberries and strawberry-based products. Benguet is one of the primary production areas, with La Trinidad being famous for its strawberry farms. The region also hosts an annual Strawberry Festival, highlighting the importance of this fruit to the local economy.
Where to Buy Strawberry Products
. Markets and Supermarkets: Fresh strawberries are available in local markets, especially in Benguet and nearby areas. Larger supermarket in cities like Manila also stock strawberries and strawberry products
. Specialty Shops and Online Stores: Specialty shops and online platforms offer a variety of strawberry products, including jams , preserves, and other strawberry-based treats.
. Strawberry Farms: Many farms in Benguet and La Trinidad allow visitors to pick their own strawberries, offering a unique experience and direct access to fresh produce.
Health Benefits: Strawberries are not only delicious but also packed with health benefits:
. Rich Nutrients: Strawberries contain Vitamins C, B9 (folate) and potassium. They're also a good source of antioxidants, which can help combat oxidative stress and inflammation.
. Heart Health: The antioxidants and fiber in strawberries may contribute to healthy heart by reducing LDL cholesterol and blood pressure.
. Weight Management: Low in calories and high in fiber, strawberries can be healthy addition to a weight management plan.
. Blood Sugar Regulation: Strawberries have a low glycemic index, which may help with blood sugar regulation.
Conclusion: Strawberries in the Philippines are primarily grown in the cooler regions of Benguet and La Trinidad. These areas are known for their strawberry farms and related products including jams and other preserves. The cultivation process may requires careful attention to climate, soil, and maintenance. The fruit offers a range of health benefits, from improved healthy heart to weight management, making it a popular choice among health-conscious consumers. If you're interested in trying fresh strawberries or strawberry-based products, local markets, specialty shops, and even online paltforms offer a variety of options.

I should probably update my dad drop shipping scam because every day we get updates and it's more wild with every passing day;
A few months ago our water cooler broke. It's not a necessity but still nice to have so we're not in a hurry to get one asap
The first one he bought was a scam. They never shipped it out
He bought a second one. Also a scam. Never shipped it out. Well come back to this
The 3rd one. He found an AliExpress. Clearly drop shipped. I had to explain someone probably bought it on Amazon on sale and sold it on AliExpress for a mark up. We technically received it (under a fake ass name of "gosy") and I told him not to be surprised if we get an up tick of spam calls and he'll get spam emails because his phone and email was definitely sold off to some call center in India. We're still investigating because not only all this but there's some other minor details that make everything sus
Back to the second one. Apparently it was delivered a few days ago. We did not receive a water cool. He's dealing with 2 different fiascos because he wanted to save $20 by buying online and not going to a store

Mead Making for the Blithe and Erratic: A Tutorial
For a One Gallon Batch:
Ingredients ($20USD+):
~3lbs (48oz, 1.5L) raw, unprocessed honey
~2.5quarts (2.4L) drinking water
1 packet of dry yeast
Supermarkets typically sell honey in 1lb/16oz containers or smaller. You can find 3lb containers if you order online. Make sure to buy raw, unprocessed honey. The pasteurization process may destroy the anti-bacterial enzymes that protect your batch from contamination during the initial stages of the brewing process.
If you trust your tap water enough to drink it you can use that, otherwise you can buy a gallon of whatever bottled spring water you prefer (just don't use mineral water or distilled water).
Wine yeast is preferred, but bread yeast works too; the resulting mead will have slightly lower alcohol content if made with bread yeast. Note: mead with higher alcohol content is more shelf-stable.
Equipment ($10USD+):
1 gallon carboy set (includes 1gal./3.8L glass brewing vessel plus drilled rubber stopper w/ airlock; sold as a unit for $15 on amazon)
brewing siphon (about $5+ on amazon; DO NOT get a petrol siphon; product must be made with food safe materials)
optional: 1gal. airtight drink dispenser with spigot** (see footnotes)
If you'd rather not pay for a glass carboy, you can instead use any empty plastic gallon-sized milk/juice jug you have lying around. You'll still need to get an airlock ($2+ on amazon). Punch a hole through the lid of your plastic jug to attach the airlock (borrow your neighbor's drill), then seal off any potential air leaks with food-safe cling wrap, Elmer's glue, or some other non-toxic sealant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Steps:
Add honey* to the brewing vessel + enough lukewarm drinking water to fill it 85% full.
Let the honey fully dissolve in the water. Stir it, or screw on the lid and shake it.
Add 1 tsp yeast.
Kill the remainder of the yeast packet in half a cup of boiling water (you can nuke it in the microwave) and add that too. It gives the yeast some extra nutrients to help it ferment.**
Add a little more water until your fermenting vessel is 85-90%full.
Put in the rubber stopper/airlock.
Store the carboy somewhere room temperature. Ideal fermenting temperatures vary depending on the yeast. Wine-strength mead ages well at room temperature (64-75º F). Mead with a lower alcohol level should be aged at slightly cooler temperatures.
Swish the liquid in the carboy around once a day for the first 5 days, to make sure the honey really is fully dissolved and not settling to the bottom.
Wait for fermentation to finish (usually 3 or 4 weeks but it may take longer) -> when air bubbles stop coming out of the airlock, it's done fermenting (give it a couple weeks after it seems to have stopped to be extra sure).
Your mead will still be cloudy at this point. Remove any solids you might have put in the brew like fruit or spices (you can use a metal sieve, or cheese cloth, or a coffee filter, or whatever you have on hand to strain it), and seal off the container (be SURE fermentation has stopped, because you can EXPLODE your container if you seal it off when fermentation is still going.***
Wait for the mead to clear. All the yeast/particulates from the honey will slowly settle to the bottom of the container now that it has completed fermentation. This might take several weeks, or even several months**** depending on which honey you used.
Transfer the cleared mead into a new container(s), leaving behind any particulates and dead yeast that have settled to the bottom of the container.
At this point (3-4 months after you started the batch) you can go ahead and drink it, OR if it doesn't taste good yet, you can continue to let it age for up to 2 years in an airtight container***** in a temperature controlled root cellar/wine cellar/wine fridge.
Best served cold. Chill before drinking.
.
*If the honey is too thick to pour directly into the carboy, warm a half gallon of water in a large pot pot (no hotter than 95°F/35°C, which is the internal temperature of a beehive -> DO NOT boil) and let the honey dissolve in it before adding it to carboy.
**You can also buy commercial yeast nutrient. Or you can not add any nutrient and your mead will probably still come out fine, but it might take longer to ferment and require more aging to taste good.
***If your container is a conventional jar/jug, you will need to buy a brewing siphon for step 10. If, however, you use a jar/jug with an attached spigot, you will not need a siphon.
Tumblr media
The spigot will allow you to pour off the cleared mead, while leaving behind any unwanted residue that has settled to the bottom of the container. Do TEST the spigot first to make sure it doesn't leak.
****I know I said you could us a plastic jug, but once the fermentation is complete you should transfer it to a glass container(s) to let it clear. You can buy additives to make it clear faster by searching for "brewing clarifiers" online. Or you can just drink it cloudy if it passes your personal taste test.
*****If you want it to have an oaky flavor, you can age it in an oak barrel, or you can get the same effect by adding oak chips to the batch before sealing it off in a glass container.
.
I see a lot of brewing guides tell you that yeast nutrient is absolutely necessary. My mead has always tasted fine without it. YMMV.
You can buy additional equipment to measure exactly how alcoholic your mead is and exactly what the pH is in your carboy etc., etc., but I just don't see the point unless you're a professional brewer making mead with intent to sell.
Some mead guides will tell you that you need to buy special sanitizer and use special gloves and build a special cleanroom to avoid contamination. Contamination risk is higher if you're doing a fruit mead using a fruit that rots easily like raspberries. But if you stick to basics, risk is low since both raw honey and the alcohol it is converted into have anti-fungal/anti-bacterial properties. Just wash & rinse your hands and your equipment with regular dish soap.
Honestly, as long as you don't let any NYC sewer rats piss directly in your carboy and you should be fine.

here’s a non-exhaustive list of things you can do to try to cool down during heatwaves.
some can be easily done, others might not be affordable to everyone (but i tried not to put anything expensive on this list, mostly items you can adapt to your budget)
stay inside (if your place is cooler than outside) and stay out of the sun as much as possible, especially during daytime. if you can’t go inside seek out a shadowy place, for example under a tree
at night place a fan it in front of a window so the cooler night air comes inside your place and so the air can circulate
if you have a disposable fan try building your own swamp cooler (link to outside source). in case that’s not possible place a bowl filled with ice in front of your fan and have that circulate the air
open windows at night as well as your doors so the air can circulate. close all your windows and shutters as soon as the air warms up. that way the hot air doesn’t come in and the sun rays won’t be able to heat up your place as much
contact your doctor or search online to find out if any medication is making you more vulnerable to heat
drink up to 3 liters of water every day. soft drinks, sodas and such do not properly satisfy thirst. coffee is a diuretic so drink in moderation if possible. in case of health conditions like heart conditions consult your doctor to find out how much fluids you’re allowed to consume in a day
if you don’t like plain water and find it hard to drink enough because of it: slice up different fruits and vegetables like strawberry, blueberry, apples, lemons, oranges, cucumbers, peppermint and put them in water, store in fridge and drink the next day. bonus: you can eat the cold fruits afterwards!
buy a fan. during the day place it in such a way that it gives you a slight breeze but doesn’t give you a stiff necky (for example avoid directly pointing it ar your neck). this is subjective so try to find what works for you
wear loose clothes, best made out of cotton (avoid polyester and other such materials, anything that is breathable). go for white or lighter colours to wear (especially outside). they will reflect the sun whereas dark clothes will absorb the heat
wear a sunhat or other headwear that shields your head from the sun. make sure it lets air in and out so hear doesn’t store up under there
let cold water run over your feet, thighs and underarms if possible.
in case of water draughts: wet a washcloth or dishtowel with a bit of cold water and put it around your neck or on your forehead. you can also put them in the freezer for a little bit to get more effect. don’t put something frozen directly on your skin! in can cause freeze burns
instead of cool drinks, go for warm (not hot!) tea. while cold drinks and icecream feel nice your body has to work to heat them up to body temperature, putting more stress on it
fill a clean spray bottle with (cold) water and soray it onto your body. the evaporation of the water on your nody helps cool it down
eat easily digestible foods, nothing too heavy on sugar and fat. ideal are fruits and vegetables (but always eat to your dietary needs!!). personally i like adding things that are only warm instead of hot, bc then i don’t have to use the oven or hotplates as much
in case it’s already warm inside: don’t use your TV, laptop, desktop computer and other bigger gadgets unless necessary. unfortunately they heat up the inside air more due to the warmth they produce
and if you go out: don’t forget a high SPF sunscreen to prevent sunburn!!
if you’re already suffering from a heatstroke please go see a medical professional about it.
these are all the tips i could quickly come up with and type in on my phone. a lot of them i have tested myself but not all. feel free to add more of your heat survival tips so we can help each other out

Not to dadpost at y’all but summer fun pro tip: if you buy tickets to amusement parks online at least a day before instead of at the gate, they can cost like half as much, taking them from “prohibitively expensive” to “still not cheap but a doable one-time treat”
Tumblr media
(Also, obviously, try to go on non-holiday weekdays so it’s less crowded and you don’t have to deal with long-ass lines taking up your whole day; bring a reusable water bottle and refill it constantly at the water fountains; sunscreen; maybe even bring along a cooler with sandwiches and leave it in your car and then do that for lunch instead of $10 greasy pizza slices, &c.)

hi!!! okay here’s a list of tips based on a mixture of scientific expertise and my own personal experiences as someone who grew up in the desert and now lives in an area that traditionally has a cool climate (and therefore is not equipped to handle heat) but has had some extreme heat waves the past few years due to global warming, lol. some of this stuff is pretty basic/common sense and i expect you probably know most of it already, but i included it just to be safe. sending this as an ask on anon so that way you can share it and there’s a possibility someone else who might need to read this can see it. please stay safe and i’m wishing you all the best <3 - hair anon
- first of all, during the hottest parts of the day, if it’s at all possible, go to public places with ac. if this is going to be anywhere nearby you, it’s usually going to be more modern buildings, including and especially things like indoor shopping centers and movie theaters. this may be more or less doable because a million other people will have the same idea and those places may be completely packed, but if it’s at all possible, i recommend it.
- when you’re at home: keep your windows closed and blinds drawn as long as the temperature inside your apartment is cooler than it is outside. putting tin foil on the outside of windows can help improve insulation, if that’s possible. if it gets hotter inside, though, open your windows and keep them open. keep your blinds or curtains shut, but only so far as they don’t block the air flowing through the open window. you need to keep open airflow through the building once its internal temperature gets hotter than the temperature outside so the heat doesn’t get trapped. it *will* turn into an oven otherwise. if there’s any overhead fans on the ceiling, turn those on and keep them on. if you have any standing fans, keep them all on. if you don’t have any standing fans, and all the places nearby that sell them haven’t already sold out, buy some. even if you only have a tiny fan or fans, keep those plugged in and blowing. they can make a world of difference. there’s an important caveat to the fans, though: if the internal temperature of where you’re at is over 35°C/95°F, fans can actually make it harder for your body to cool down. if it reaches that point, turn the fans off and try other methods listed below to stay cool.
- find a place you’re going to be comfortable in lying down in essentially all day. you want to move as little as possible. i’d recommend having a fan stationed there and blowing for as long as it’s safe to—if you only have one, keep it there. wear loose-fitting, light clothing.
- drink water. drink more water than you think you need. depending on how hot it gets and how dehydrated you get, you’re going to feel sick and not want to drink water, but do it anyways. juice and electrolyte-enhanced beverages (i.e. gatorade) are also good, but water is best. carbonated and/or caffeinated beverages aren’t great, but they’ll do in a pinch if for whatever reason, you’re in a place where you don’t have access to water. if you’re sensitive to caffeine, though, i’d recommend avoiding it 100% until it cools down.
- if you have any pets, make sure you have similar systems set up for them. i’d recommend looking up online resources specific to whatever breed of animal you may have.
- know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Here’s the NHS page that lists quick and dirty symptoms: https://www(.)nhs(.)uk/conditions/heat-exhaustion-heatstroke/ and here’s a Mayo Clinic page, which is longer but lists more symptoms and the causes of it, as well as lists risk factors: https://www(.)mayoclinic(.)org/diseases-conditions/heat-exhaustion/symptoms-causes/syc-20373250 if you live alone, i’d recommend setting up a system with a friend/family member/neighbor/etc where you check up on each other throughout the day and set up a plan to call for help if either one of you starts experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. if you know anyone who lives alone, especially anyone who’s in a risk group, i’d also recommend getting in touch with them to see if they have a similar plan in place, and if they don’t, setting one up with them. long story short, though, if you start feeling any kind of sick or funky, start taking steps to cool down, even if you’re not sure if it’s heat exhaustion. don’t take chances. personally speaking, if it helps any, the few times i’ve had heat exhaustion what i usually noticed first were stomach cramps, followed by muscle cramps, lightheadedness/dizziness, and nausea. every person is different but be sure to be on the lookout for those symptoms in yourself and anyone you know/are surrounded by.
- Wet any spare rags or cloths you have and put them in your fridge. When you start to feel unbearably hot, pull them out and put them on the back of your neck and your pulse points. The ones on your neck are most effective, but you can also use your temples, your wrists, your armpits, the inside of your elbows, ankles, and knees, the tops of your feet, and your inner thighs. I’ve heard cycling through using those spots is effective, as is just keeping cool rags there until they start to warm up. Once you’re done using them, rewet them and put them back in the fridge. Ice packs and bags of ice cubes are also great for this purpose, just make sure to wrap them in cloth first.
- cold showers are your best friend. during the day, if you start to overheat, they’re another great option.
- at night, once it’s cooled off, keep the windows open as far as they’ll go (and as far as you can safely keep them). get as much cool air as you can into the building before it warms up again the next day.
This is such a lot of very useful information, thank you! I hope it helps out anyone else suffering from the heat too!
Today's work day was not an easy one, got to admit 😂 (my office is still mostly my bedroom, and the sun shines though the window from about 2 to 5, which is amazing when its not boiling!) But at least I didn't have to get the tube - small mercies!
Thanks also to @pensiveabstraction, @moth-time and @uncle-sams-dirty-socks with their helpful tips in the last post :)
I hope all the other folks suffering in the heat are keeping themselves as safe as possible!

Disclosure
Disclosure was just plain annoying. No, it wasn’t dangerous, but that didn’t change the fact that people were ignorant. Going online seemed like the better option, except all the mainstream dating apps asked “M or F” at the very beginning, and the queer ones that didn’t had nice folks about two hundred miles north of where they lived. So they sat at the bar, wondering if they would get the luxury of fucking someone they didn’t have to explain all of gender theory to.
Only once had they tried not saying anything. They’d gotten pretty far–naked, the guy thrusting erratically, before putting his hand on their chest and asking, “Who’s a good girl?” Their genitals went straight from lux aloe vera to a prickly, unyielding desert cactus.
So it was better to just speak up and weed them out before anyone got naked. Occasionally they were slutty and desperate enough to try and convince the guy that it wouldn’t make him gay: good pussy is good pussy. This strategy worked best when the guy was also slutty and desperate. The sex was usually quick, a little awkward, but at least it was something.
They sometimes wished they didn’t like sex so much. Then they wouldn’t have to put up with this shit. But, despite their best efforts, they did, and in all the ways they felt they shouldn’t, too. They liked hands groping their breasts and warm, wet lips on their nipples. They liked the sting of initial entry, and the way cocks felt when they reached deep inside. No dysphoria. They knew all the straight men who fucked them just saw a woman, and it wasn’t worth the trouble to change that.
They nursed their beer. Maybe they should just go home. Dildos weren’t the same as a warm body on top of them, but at least they’d do the job without explanation.
Their eyes flitted when they heard the stool scrape the cement floor. The man swallowed and clasped his hands together on the counter. His lips moved, but Jude heard nothing: then the bartender put whiskey in front of him.
Jude instantly felt less alone. They weren’t the only one who’d gone straight from work to the bar. They had almost gone home to change, maybe increase their chances by putting on something more femme or at least neutral, but then the thought had made them sick. What happened to pride? They had fought to wear this to work; they might as well wear it to get laid.
They tried to think of what they wanted to say to him. Compliment his clothes? No, men don’t respond well to that. Ask him if he just got off work. There. They cleared their throat.
“I like your tie.”
They blinked and looked over. “Oh. Thank you.”
He nodded. “You just get off work?”
He’d stolen their line. They cleared their throat again. “Yeah. I’m a paralegal… you?”
“I sell water coolers.” He sipped his drink, his fingers tapping the glass restlessly. “What kind of legal stuff?”
“Car accident settlements, mostly.”
“You like it?”
They shrugged.
He snickered. “Makes money?”
“Yeah. I like that about it.”
“I bet.” He sipped his drink in the smallest increment. Jude waited for him to say something creepy. Instead: “Money can’t buy happiness, but it sure buys security.”
They raised their eyebrows. “That’s the truth.” They scanned his fingers, and found no wedding band.
“Does it ever get sad? Working with car accidents?”
They thought about the toddler who had died a month ago. “...sometimes.” They wanted to ask about his work, but couldn’t find a good question to ask about water coolers.
“That sucks.” The gravity of his question seemed to hit him. He switched topics. “What’s your tie pin?”
It was the non-binary flag. They wore it for visibility’s sake: for the off chance that someone would see it, recognize it, and know that they weren’t alone. The non-binary flag was a good choice, because it was less known than the trans flag, so the only people who recognized it were either allies or non-binary themselves. Besides, trans made people resort to using “he”, so the non-binary flag it was. People didn’t usually ask about it; just assumed it was queer and that Jude was a lesbian. So much for visibility.
Jude bit their lower lip and silently exhaled through their nose. “...I’m non-binary. I’m not a man or a woman.”
He blinked at them. Jude waited for him to politely excuse himself to the restroom, then not come back for the rest of the night. He seemed like the type.
“Oh. Interesting.”
Jude felt a vague annoyance at the word interesting, like they were a neat little science fact one could read from a listicle online. They bit the inside of their cheek. “...So I use they/them pronouns.”
“Alright. What do you do in your spare time?”
They blinked, unsure if he had heard them. Jude was used to this: to people nodding along like they knew, unhearing and uncaring, and so not thinking twice about the inevitable she.
“...Not much. I read a lot.”
“I play a mean banjo.”
“You… what?”
“Thinking about starting a one man band. Or a Britney Spears cover band.”
“A what now?” They couldn’t stop from grinning, delight and confusion winning over. Did they just hear him right?
They had. “Toxic was always a country song.”
They rolled their eyes. “Oh my god. No!”
He laughed. He had a good laugh: childish, unashamed of his own joy. They grinned back at him. He wasn’t exactly hot, but they weren’t exactly picky, either. ...
If he wasn’t going to say anything about the body hair or the binder, he was at least going to say something about their cock. They had forgotten about it. They’d never worn it to a hookup before, but there it was, brushing against his thigh while they made out.
They pulled away, trying to decide if they should explain it to him. The binder had been taken off without comment, although he had watched with bright, curious eyes. He grabbed their chin and kissed their neck, their bare chests pressing into each other. They settled on not saying anything, determined not to apologize for it, to keep their dignity.
He surprised them by getting down on his knees. He kissed the bulge, smiling up at them as he fiddled with their belt. The dick fell to the floor with the rest of their clothes. They spread their legs.
And for a brief second they considered asking. They didn’t mind words like cunt or pussy, but maybe, via request, he could also call it their dick, something they called it themselves but never heard from anyone else.
His mouth latched on, his tongue slicking through their folds. He moaned, enjoying himself. They gasped, their fingers twisting through his hair, and all words and requests fell away.
...
“What was that word you used?”
Their head was full of dopamine. They giggled, curled into his shoulder. “What word?” Some Adult Swim show played on TV, the animation crude but colorful.
“That flag you had on your tie.”
“Oh.” They wrapped an arm around him, curling onto his chest. “Non-binary?”
“Yeah. Not a man or a woman.” He nodded. “I can dig it, I can dig it.”
“Groovy.” They chuckled.
“Funky.” He offered. They closed their eyes. He smelled so clean. His chest hair tickled their cheek. “Are there a lot?”
“A lot of what?” They’d cum so much they felt worn out and sleepy. Damn, he was good in bed. They had to get his number to do this again.
“A lot of you. Apparently there’s a whole word for it, so…”
They lazily opened their eyes. “Yeah. Well, no one really looks for us, so we’re kind of invisible, but yeah, there’s a lot of us out there. More than you’d think.”
“Cool.” They felt him nod. “Groovy. I can dig it.”
They didn’t laugh, so he went quiet. A character cursed on the screen. Jude wasn’t finding the excessive use of fuck funny. They rested against him, their eyelids heavy.
“Have you always known?”
They forced their eyes open. “...I’m not sure how to answer that.”
“Sorry, sorry. I just… I just wanna know, like, how would you know?”
They looked up at him. His face was earnest, honest. “Everything just kinda… falls into place.”
“Oh.” His eyes darted away, then turned back to them. “So you’d know, like, instantly?”
“I mean,” they shifted, propping their back up against the bed frame, “it took me some time to figure it out, I guess. Play with it a bit until it felt right.”
He nodded, adamantly. “Oh. Okay.” Then his eyes darted back to the wall, and he shivered, despite being underneath the blanket and despite the warm body curled against him. He bit his lower lip. “...Can I show you something?”
“Um.”
“I’m sorry. It’s dumb. It’s really dumb. Let’s… I can get you an uber home, if you want. I’m sorry for making it weird.”
They blinked several times at him. “You can go ahead and show me.” They hoped they wouldn’t regret this sentence. Maybe he was going to show them something creepy, like a jar of human teeth. Or maybe he had a poop fetish. Wait, what if he had a wife or girlfriend or something?
He lifted a finger, then ran out the room. They sat on the bed, secretly planning an escape route, until he came back less than a minute later with a plastic bag.
“I… I’ve never used it… I don’t know how.”
They gazed up at his outstretched hand, and reluctantly take the bag. It was going to be teeth, after all. They looked inside, prepared for the worst. They saw a case and a black tube. Confused, they took it out and laid it on the bed.
Realization shot through them. It was makeup–cheap, dollar store makeup. They looked up at him, and he bit his lower lip.
“I haven’t… looked at any of the tutorials… I, you know, I thought maybe this was just a weird fetish, or something, because I…” he scratched through his hair, “I know I don’t wanna be a woman, like I even looked up what estrogen does and I just… knew it wasn’t… like I didn’t want to… but then I felt weird, because why would I even look something like that up in the first place, it didn’t make any sense… I’m sorry.”
It’s an awkward array of things. Foundation that looks a shade too light for him. Eyeshadow with a brush too big. Bright red lipstick, the hardest shade to pull off well. Even nail polish, but there’s no clear coat.
They feel the words spilling out of their lips before they’re really aware of it. “Do you want me to do your makeup?”
He looks down at the bed, at the various cosmetics, and back at them. He gives a small nod, then creeps into the bed like it isn’t his.
“Alright… stay still. Close your eyes, but don’t scrunch them. I’ll…” they look around, “do you have any cotton swabs?”
He shook his head. “...sorry.”
“We’ll see if my finger works.” At that moment they’re overly aware that the two of them are still completely naked. It must be nearly midnight by now. They dab their fingerprint into the eyeshadow, and gingerly try to press it into his eyelid. It half works. They suddenly feel pressure to do a good job and to make him look pretty. Maybe it’ll encourage him.
He clears his throat and shivers again. “...and can you do me a favor?” He digs his teeth into his lower lip, and tries to hide his shame. “...can you… can you just try and call me… they…?”
They think of all the people who don’t see the tie pin, and of all the people that they have to overexplain everything to, and of all the men who’ve fucked them and only saw a woman on the sheets.
They smile. “I’m doing their makeup right now. They’re going to look so beautiful when I’m done.”
Jude watches their face light up, and somehow, it all feels worthwhile.
