I cannot stress this enough do not walk your dogs in high temperatures
Even if it’s reasonable for you, the pavement is hotter than the air and will burn your dogs’ paws. I have seen my fair share of blistered pads this summer. I have seen a dog who was so badly injured he had to be carried everywhere for weeks.
If you must take them out, drive them to a field where there is grass to walk on. It will still be hot but will be infinitely better than walking on concrete or any other kind of heat absorbent material.
Also: take water for your dog! You can get collapsible bowls to pour water in but even just poking small holes in the top of an everyday plastic water bottle and squirting out a stream for your dog to drink from/cool off in!
Sincerely, someone who works with animals for a living and grew up in an extremely hot and open climate

Heatwaves are always deadly in the UK - because we don’t have the systems in place to deal with this level of unusual heat - but this one is going to be worse. Many houses in the UK don’t have AC (which is a part of why we struggle with heatwaves in general) but some do, and many others have electric fans or similar devices. Fans and AC (for those who have it) are hugely important in getting through this kind of weather.
The cost of energy is soaring right now and people can barely afford to eat - who is going to run their fans or AC in this economy? I honestly believe this heatwave will have one of the worst death tolls in at least recent years.
Also, Americans of the internet, please refrain from making fun of people who are dying or suffering health issues due to the 30-40 degree Celsius heat just because you’re used to it hotter. It wasn’t funny last year, or the year before that, and it isn’t funny now.

Tips from a Texan!
Drink more water than you think you’ll need. Trust me, you need more than you think. While watching the color of your urine is an excellent indicator also pay attention to your sugar cravings. Dehydration tends to set off more sugar cravings than normal so if you find yourself craving sweets more than you normally would that can be a much quicker indicator you’re dehydrated than your urine. (Not always as reliable but it happens for a lot of people! With less water your body can’t get energy out of storage as quickly so even though you have plenty of energy your cells aren’t getting as much so your brain starts sugar cravings in an attempt to get more energy even though the real problem is dehydration is the long and short of it.)
Also make sure to keep your electrolytes up too! Your body needs sodium, potassium, and other minerals to function just as much as water, and you’ll lose them through sweat and urine as well so too much water without intaking any electrolytes can still hurt you!
If you can put wet towels around your neck those can help a lot! There’s cooling towels you can buy online that actively stay cold for a while but if you can’t get any of those just a bit of wet cloth is better than nothing!
Take breaks as much as you can and keep the fans running! You’ll tire a lot easier. Also try to avoid direct sunlight. Even if it’s still hot in the shade the difference is STAGGERING.
Also depending on how much you HAVE to be in direct sunlight I’d recommend either sunscreen or lightweight but full body covering. I had to walk half an hour each way to the pharmacy yesterday and wore a breathable but long sleeved blue shirt and thin beige pants, I personally prefer to just stay covered since sweat can wash off sunscreen. Light colors will keep you cooler and the last thing you want is to get burnt! Hats are also great unless you’re me and would rather just deal with it bc you despise having things on your head. 😂 It was also remarkable how much walking on the side of the road that was in the shade made a difference, direct light is not your friend!
We’ve been dealing with these temps for weeks now in Texas so you have my utmost compassion. (It’s still morning but it will get up to 104 where I am later, I totally get it.) Best of luck to you all, may it pass quickly. ❤️

how to deal with extreme heat without A/C
For anyone in the UK and Europe and wherever else who needs this -
Close blinds and drapes to keep the sun out of your house and reduce the incoming heat.
Drink a lot of a water. Like a shit ton of water. More than you think. I know ice water is less of a thing in some countries, but it's preferable because it'll keep you cooler.
In addition to plain water, make sure to replace electrolytes lost through sweating, by drinking something like Gatorade. You can make a homemade electrolyte drink by mixing water with a small amount of sea salt (~ 1/4 tsp) and half a lemon or lime, and sweetener if needed.
Dip a non-terrycloth tea towel (or any spare cotton like an old undershirt) in water and then stick it in the freezer for 5-7 minutes until it is icy cold but still pliable. Drape these cloths over bare skin, like your neck, legs, and forehead, and sit in front of a fan. The fan will continually evaporate heat and the cloth will stay very cold against you for quite a while.
Fill up a spare spray bottle with water and spray yourself while in front of a fan. (Not quite as effective as #4 but still good.)
Don't exercise. It exacerbates the stress on your body. You can skip one day gym bro.
Don't forget to eat, and only eat cold things. If you don't have an appetite because of the heat, drink something like a smoothie.
If it gets really bad, go to a cooling center if you can. Don't fuck around with extreme heat. Heat stress is deadly and often hard to feel until it's too late.

If you’re in the UK, please for the love of all things holy take the incoming heatwave seriously!! These aren’t going to be regular, nice summer days for lounging on the beach— this heat is going to kill people.
Don’t risk being outside if you can help it on Monday and Tuesday. And dear lord, if you are going out, PLEASE don’t put yourself in situations where you could get hurt or require others to come rescue you - i.e by jumping into rivers, swimming out to sea, etc. Even if you think nothing will happen, it’s not worth any kind of risk. The NHS is under so much strain right now and it is going to be even worse in A&E the next few days. The last thing they need is any more people clogging up emergency services with heat stroke or injuries that could have been prevented by taking more care!!

Lil something to signal boost for my fellow folks in the UK,
the heatwave is going to worsen again over the next few days the met office is issuing the UKs first ever red weather warning for this heatwave!
So please provide hydration for our wildlife! This weather is dangerous for US and THEM!
Pebbles stones and rocks in your water bowls will let bees and other insects drink too!

UK MATES who are HOT
A little trick I learned last year to cool down is to put ice on the back of your neck or on your wrists. It helps cool your whole body down. IDK why it works but it’s helped me

we are actually dying here in the uk. it is too hot. we dont have ac in our houses. our houses are built to insulate heat, not repel it. there is no wind, just a heavy, sticky heat. i am sweating from places i did not know could sweat. i am drinking like 5L of water a day but im always thirsty. our windows are open to let fresh air in but our curtains are closed to hopefully keep the warmth out. our fans are literally on full blast all day but it feels like they’re just pumping out hot air. our dogs have cooling bandanas on and i just got the pigs some cooling mats. a cold shower didnt even help because the water evaporated off me the second i got out.
if you’re used to a horrible warm climate, please give some advice on how you cope. i thought the winters were getting bad for my pain but this is basically unbearable.
i cant sleep, i barely eat, im sweating all the time, im drowsy and cranky… this is not fun
