What are your all time favourite fanfics from each genre: fluff, smut, and agnst? <3

oh lord, this is TOUGH. i’ve read thousands of fanfics in my life and it’s borderline impossible for me to choose 😭

i can’t rlly separate them into genres per se bc most of them are multi chapter novel-length fics, but i will if applicable!

i’m not a huge fan of condensing entire works into a single word!!! authors work too hard for their writing to be trope-ified like that! so if any of the writers come across this post, please know that i would write fucking essays about these fics if y’all asked.

and one last disclaimer: i’m currently on my phone with limited cell service in europe and can’t jump between tabs to check peoples’ separate tumblr and ao3 usernames, so i’ve tagged who i know off the top of my head!!

so here are my top 10 (in no particular order, just listing what comes to mind first)

“in the sun” (kurt cobain x OC) by ugh-nirvana on wattpad. it has been my favorite fanfiction of all fucking time; i read this at least once a year. primarily fluff and angst, but it follows the OC and kurt through high school and into adulthood. the author and i are actually friends now bc we wrote two of the most popular kurt cobain x OC fics on wattpad 😭🖤

“the windows of this love” (byler angst) by delusional together (Whyyyyy) on ao3. phenomenal story, i cry every time i read it, and i’ve read it so many times it’s kind of a problem lmaooo. it was also one of my inspirations for TIMT.

“that blue gibson” (dave grohl x OC) by thatbluegibson on wattpad. a literal masterpiece. cute, romantic, fluffy, spicy, all of the above.

“the rawest desire (in it’s friendliest form)” (byler smut) by bangingbiddies on ao3. they have a very apropos username; this fic had me slamming my laptop shut multiple times and screaming at my cat. probably the best smut i’ve read tbh.

“i’m a wreck (without you here)” (byler angst) by @oldfashionedmorphine on ao3. INSANE. BEAUTIFUL. LYRICAL. i cannot praise this story highly enough, it’s one of my favorite byler fics of all time. alcoholic mike wheeler is my favorite mike wheeler ngl.

“second chances and dances” (byler angst/fluff) by @foodiewithdahoodie on ao3!!!! i’m a huge sucker for dad mike fics, and this one is *chefs kiss*

“lost without you” (byler angst/fluff) by julia_skysong on ao3. another dad mike fic i actually just finished for the 3rd fucking time in the past 6 months. i recommend reading this whole series, it’s so well written (and is still being written!!).

“fence sitter” (byler smut) by pinkcash on ao3. exactly what the title suggests. sensually spicy and severely suspenseful.

“boy in my class [gerard way]” by lilyrose93 on wattpad. it’s a gerard way x OC. very cute, very cliche, but if you’re looking for ✨fluff✨, this is it. and listen, i know writing about real people who are still alive is kinda weird but like… this one is serious, ok??? 💀

“tell me i’m a bad man” by therevengeparade on wattpad. along the same lines as the one before this— it’s teacher/student frerard. very messy, very smutty, top tier drama. if it helps at all, this was probably my initiation to gay fanfic. so… thanks therevengeparade!!! love u!!!

do you guys remember being a kid and going out somewhere with ur family and becoming the bestest friends ever with another kid around your age and then leaving and never seeing them again? but you still remember them and the fun you had even years later? byler au where they meet like that somewhere as little kids and then reunite in college (they see each other across the quad, library, etc, not as easy as being roomies), or maybe at work (comic company, mike interviews will, or private/paranormal investigator mike has some questions for will [bc everything still wants to kill him even in this au, sorry, will]). you could maybe even keep the whole "you said yes"/they were each other's first friend factor if you wanted to make it a little angstysweet. idk!! just!! fate!! and second chances!! letting something go and knowing it's meant to be when it comes back to you!! or maybe it's a three-part fic where you write their first meeting, when they meet in uni but have to go their own ways, and then when they meet again as older adults who live in the same city this time and aren't being called to opposite ends of the country or whatever idk. @ writers are u seeing my vision someone Take This n breathe life into it i Beg of u

a s5 byler fic pt. 3

as you’re probably wondering if you’ve read the first and second part of this, ‘what is going to happen next?’ ‘what is will going to do?’ ‘where’s the byler in this?’ and my answer to your questions is this: just wait and see. oh and the recaps: 1. mike gets vecna’d. 2. el decides to piggyback and save him. 3. she finds him and vecna finds them too. 4. el and vecna fight for a bit, el has lost. 5. will comes to help them in the upside down and 6. will said “i’m here, bitch, come and get me.” all caught up? good, now let’s continue.

vecna takes his challenge at a full scale. he charges a vine towards will and he stops it but with what? you guessed it, by burning it! vecna groans in pain, sending the vine back and he unleashed another. will just kept burning one after the other until all of vecna’s vines were burnt. mike looked at him with… perhaps admiration or attraction? el couldn’t figure it out but she was happy her brother was getting a chance to shine and maybe a chance to impress mike. el slowly got back up in her feet. “i’m going to help will.” el told mike, he looked like he was about to protest but she left before he could.

while vecna was trying to recover, el throws him across the room two times. will looks at her and smiles, rushing over to her side. el smiles and opens her arms for a hug, they hug tightly. will starts tearing up. “thank god, you’re ok.” he said through the tears. el just squeezes him tighter, mike walks over to the two. but this reunion won’t last forever as vecna regains his strength. el and will part, sharing a glance before vecna rushes towards them. they hold hands and will begins to power up, thunder starts booming all around. it’s starts quiet then progressively gets louder, boom, boom, BOOM! you know what they say, thunder comes before lightning.

el and will combine their powers and shoot them towards vecna. will’s lightning begins to deteriorate vecna’s skin and vecna unleashes a pained yell. el keeps vecna in place so he can’t escape, mike stands frozen watching the whole thing unfold. with the gang, the silence between them becomes uncomfortable. “robin, can you check up on will?” nancy asks, robin jumps a bit due to her voice but nods in agreement. she begins to walk down the hall. “this totally isn’t scary at all, i mean i’ve faced this vecna/one/henry dude before and he’s way scarier than this….” robin said soon diving into her rambles.

as she reaches will, she’s stunned at what she finds. will and el are….. glowing? “no, that can’t be right i mean i can get why el’s glowing maybe she’s using her powers but will……” robin begins to say then she rushes back down the hall. “they’re glowing!” robin shouts to the others. “they’re glowing?” jonathan repeats, generally confused. the older teens go to see what robin’s talking about while lucas stays put with mike’s body. “can’t believe i’m back here again.” lucas whispers to himself. back with will, el and mike, vecna’s skin is almost completely melted off and his wounds seem to be bleeding black? “i’m not…..finished…yet.” vecna seems to forcefully push these words out of his mouth. he smirked and started to shift the atmosphere once again.

the ground began to shake and cracks started to form. vecna was still smiling as el, will and mike lost their footing and fell down. el fell so hard that she was thrown out of the piggyback. with the gang, once they found that will and el’s body were in fact glowing, they tried to find the cause. though as el woke up, it gave everyone quite a scare. she was soaking wet and was breathing very heavily. “el? el! are you ok, where is will?” jonathan said as he rushed to her side. el stared at him, still breathing heavy. “he’s….with..one.” she finally said. everyone shared glances.

once, the ground had stopped shaking and cracking, will found himself tied up in vecna’s vines with mike not soon far away. once will found a way out of the vines, he went to assist mike. after will got him out, he held him close then observed their surroundings. it looked similar to what el described as the lab. “hello 001….” a voice said ominously “welcome home..”
