Mr. Loverman
It was a normal afternoon, and even though Antfrost missed his husband, conversing with Wilbur wasn’t too bad. He was a nice man, and the weather wasn’t too bad despite the drought leaving the grass brown and crackly. The shade provided by the willow tree they were under was cool enough to make it bearable to be out in the summer heat.
And to be honest, Antfrost liked hearing Wilbur talk about Sally. They had met through Skeppy, who had been friends with Wilbur’s brother Technoblade. And now he and his friends, Sapnap, Badboyhalo, Skeppy, Ponk and Awesamdude lived in the same area alongside Wilbur and his wife. The recent influx of players to the mainland had caused them all to come into closer quarters than usual.
Wilbur talked a lot, and right now he was talking about Sally.
It reminded him of the way Velvet talked about him when he thought Antfrost was out of earshot. Wilbur was a man who loved his wife and was loud about it, and Velvet was the same with him. Antfrost hoped his beloved knew, even though he was quieter, his love was no less strong.
“Antfrost! Come here!” Someone screamed, causing the cat-hybrid’s ear to swivel. Wilbur, mid-way through making a joke, recoiled with a startled look on his face. To Antfrost’s shock, Sapnap was standing their, panting, leaning his hands on his knees, his face stricken with shock. Almost immediately, Antfrost’s stomach dropped. Something must have happened at camp.
“What happened?” He demanded. Beside him, Wilbur jerked upward into a standing position.
“What’s the matter?” Wilbur asked, all silliness wiped from his face.
Sapnap’s gaze flitted between the two. “It’s Sally and Velvet.” He croaked, his voice hoarse and heavy.
“What happened?!” Antfrost yelped before he could stop himself. Sapnap flinched.
“They went mining for resources down in the caves over by the birch forest! And their was a cave-in!”
Antfrost was already on his feet, his legs automatically carrying him towards the mines, and he could hear Wilbur running behind him.
Just a cave collapse. Velvet will be fine, he has plenty of experience caving.
Antfrost assured himself as they neared the cave entrances- or what remained of them. The wooden beam holding up the entrance had collapsed, with loose dirt and boulders now surrounding it.
“Over here!” Antfrost jerked his head as he heard his friend’s voice. Badboyhalo held a limp body in his arms, and Antfrost’s heart clenched and unclenched as he realized the body was in fact, Sally’s and not his beloved Velvet.
That didn’t stop the horrific wail Wilbur produced from making the cat-hybrid flinch, as he followed his friend towards Bad.
Sally’s eyes were closed, if Antfrost didn’t know any better he would think she was a doll, with how ridiculously small she was in the demon’s gentle grasp.
Wilbur rushed forward, hurriedly embracing his partner as he laid her on her back. “No, Sally, No!” The man screamed at the blank faced corpse.
“She can’t be dead!” Wilbur yelled again, to nobody in particular. Beside him, Badboyhal0 knelt down, pressing gently on her wrist with a surprised gasp.
Antfrost’s eyes darted around, but he saw no sight of Velvet, even as Sapnap was now catching up to them.
Gravel crunched as two more people emerged- Sam and Ponk. Covered in dust and exhausted, and to Antfrost’s dread, carrying a likewise limp Velvet.
Antfrost wasn’t quite sure if he passed out or not. All he knew was one second he was standing beside Wilbur, and the next he was right beside his own spouse, sobbing.
“What happened? What happened in the caves, tell me!” Antfrost nearly screamed, shaking. Nausea twisted in his gut as he gently cradled his husband’s body. Velvet was still warm to the touch, which only made him sob louder.
“I… Don’t know.” Ponk said, his voice nearly drowned out by the hysterical sobbing at his feet and a couple yards away.
“Ponk and I were checking the traps to see if anything had taken the bait, and we heard this loud noise and came running… And we found Sally half hidden under the rubble at the cave entrance.” Sam finished. “Velvet was a little further in.”
Antfrost turned around to see a grim looking Skeppy. “They went to try and get more coal out of the mines, but the soil is so dry it all came tumbling down, and it disturbed one of the larger rocks, and it all spiraled from their.”
Then, Badboyhalo, who had been sitting with Sally’s body and Wilbur gasped.
“Oh my goodness! She still has two lives left- she’s respawning!” He said. Sure enough, a bright yellow light flashed, and Sally came to with a gurgle.
“...Wilbur?” She groaned, shifting as he immediately laid a finger over her mouth, hushing her.
She’s not on her last life.
“Bad!” Antfrost screamed. “Come here and check on Velvet!” Ponk, who was already knelt beside Velvet, began to shake his head, but Bad complied anyway, hurrying towards them and gently laying two long, bony fingers across Velvet’s pulse.
Badboyhalo looked up, his eyes shining with sorrow. “I’m sorry Antfrost…” He trailed off, no more words needed to be spoken. Antfrost collapsed onto the ground and howled.
Despite everything, Velvet had never told him how many of his three lives were left. It seemed neither had Sally to Wilbur, although that wasn’t all uncommon for someone to not even tell their spouse their life number. He should have never let Velvet go mining when it was so dry, he should have made him wear better gear. He should have gone with them, and now Velvet’s last moments were him stuck in a dark, crowded cave while Antfrost was making small talk with Wilbur in the shade.
He felt sick. Velvet always insisted that it was safe. “What's the worst that could happen?” he’d ask Antfrost, with a shit eating grin.
Antfrost yowled again, pressing his face into Velvet’s dusty jacket.
“This is the worst that could happen.”
