#c: digimon villains

Since my previous posts on fish Digimon and mermaid (and mermaid-adjacent) Digimon got lived, fuck it, all aquatic Digimon. This will be a series of posts because there are too many for one.

I'm going to start with Digimon with codified evolution lines. For non-fans, know that while Digimon evolve through different stages, its much less linear than in Pokemon. While Pokemon evolution usually goes a to b to c, Digimon evolution can go more like a to y to r back to g then merge with e to become q. That being said, there are some lines that are clearly intended to be the default, often because they featured in the animes where evolution is usually a lot more linear than in the games and virtual pets.

Literally the OG aquatic Digimon is Betamon. It debuted on the first virtual pet alongside series mascot Agumon and yet its never been in the spotlight. I say Betamon deserves to be a major partner Digimon in some anime or game by now. I love this little frog/lizard/ wamp monster/whatever it is. Betamon also has a recolored variant called ModokiBetamon. Using a recolor as a new Digimon was fairly common in the early franchise. I generally prefer variants to have more changed about them than just the color. I also generally don't like x-antibody Digimon. To make a long story short, x-antibody Digimon are variants of existing Digimon that I generally consider to be overdesigned and ugly. Betamon has an x-antibody variant that isn't too bad as far as x-antibodies go, but it's still adding unnecessary elements to a perfectly good design.

Betamon's main evolution is Seadramon and it's a classic for a reason. This sea serpent is a beast and played a significant role in the first anime as a monster of the week. It can also breathe out a stream of supercold air that freezes its targets. When I think of aquatic Digimon, Seadramon is usually the first to come to mind. It's also notable for having an x-antibody variant that actually looks good.

Seadramon evoles to MegaSeadramon, which is a great follow-up to Seadramon's design. The red body is nice and striking and that big metal horn can shoot electricity. Come to think of it, both Seadramon and MegaSeadramon were monsters of the week in episodes of Adventure where a partner Digimon unlocked an evolution. Maybe that's the line's specialty, they never take the spotlight but they play support to the heroes. MegaSeadramon has a recolor called WaruSeadramon which is just darker and evil. MegaSeadramon has an x-antibody variant that is so overdesigned I can't help but grudgingly respect it.

The final evolution in the family is MetalSeadramon which is where the line stepped into the spotlight with MetalSeadramon being a major villain in Digimon Adventure. It was upgraded by the Crack Team (a hacker group that upgrades Digimon into cyborgs for their own nefarious goals) to become incredibly powerful and the fastest of all underwater Digimon. And according to the anime, it can fly. Unlike the others, MetalSeadramon doesn't have an x-antibody variant. Sort of. There is GigaSeadramon, which has the x-antibody and looks exactly like what you'd expect from MetalSeadramon X, but isn't. I dunno why.

The aquatic line most people will be familiar with is the Gomamon line doe to its role in Digimon Adventure. Gomamon is a cute little seal. Specifically, it is a spotted seal, or a gomafu-azarashi. I really like this guy doe to its role in the anime as a laid-back and goofy partner to a compulsive worrywart of a human. Gomamon has an x-antibody variant that's fine, but I still prefer the original.

Gomamon evolves to Ikkakumon, a big, fluffy walrus with a unicorn horn. It looks like someone that would be great to hug if you can get past the fish breath. Also that horn can open up and shoot out\t a torpedo. Because Digimon.

The next stage is Zudomon, who is now a humanoid walrus who appers to be suffering from hair loss. It's now adept at moving on land and in water. It also uses tools, wearing a giant turtle shell as armor and wielding Thor's hammer (despite what the English dub will tell you)

The final stage is Vikemon, a badass viking walrus complete with the helmet. It leads an army of Zudomon and Ikkakumon and (in another viking reference) will go into a berserk rage in combat. It does lose a lot of the aquatic design elements, but I'd say it works out.

While Vikemon is now the default end of the Gomamon line, for a while in the early days it was Plesiomon instead. I can see why they changed it, as the viking walrus has a much better connection to the rest of the line than a plesiosaur. I honestly thin it works better as an ultimate/perfect or champion/adult level than a mega, but I'm not saying no to a Plesiosaur Digimon. Plesiomon has an x-antibody variant.

What do you get when you combine a cyborg sea serpent and a plesiosaur? Turns out a mechanical submarine dragon. This is Aegisdramon, who was created by the afore-mentioned Crack Team using data from MealSeadramon and Plesiomon. While it was created by malicious hackers, it mostly handles data analysis and will allegedly purify evil. When it does fight, it's an absolute badass who is probably one of the Digital World's ocean's top dogs.

Syakomon was a fairly obscure Digimon until the game Digimon Survive made it a partner and gave it a defined evolution line. Syakomon answers the question of "how do you make a bivalve cute" by giving it a little puppy face. Weirdly enough, Syakomon originally debuted as a ultimate/perfect level before being retconned to be a rookie/child level, which makes more sense. It also has an x-antibody variant that is just atrocious. That's not fanart or concept art down there, that's the quality of the actual official art for it. Bandai paid for that quality.

Syakomon evolves to Shellmon, which is definitely one of the weirder-looking Digimon; a weird, amorphous pink monster in a turban snail shell. Sound familiar? Yeah, it's pretty similar to Pokemon's Slowbro and Slowking. That's because they're based on the same thing: the sazae-oni, a legendary Japanese sea demon that wears a turban snail shell. Shellmon also has a green recolor called MoriShellmon.

Shellmon evolves to Mermaimon, which I covered in an earlier post. The mega/ultimate level is then MarineAngemon, one of the cutest and friendliest Digimon out there. While most mega/ultimate level Digimon are gigantic combat monsters, MarineAngemon is tiny and very peaceful. It spits heart-shaped bubbles that cause targets to calm down and lose their fighting spirit, meaning it disarms its foes with the power of love. It's based on a sea angel, a type of sea slug popular in Japan.

Another anime-canon line that leads to MarineAngemon comes in the supplemental material for Digimon Tamers. It starts win Penguinmon or Penmon. It's a Digimon penguin, nothing really standout about it, but a solid design. It also has a tropical themed red recolor called Muchomon.

The next stage is Dolphmon or Rukamon. Being a dolphin, it is very intelligent, but its thought processes are completely alien and nobody else really understands it. I think thats an interesting take on dolphin intelligence.

The next evolution is Whamon, a very cool whale digimon. This thing is one of the biggest Digimon out there and so large that only a few computers can fully render it. Absolute unit. and in most appearances, it's been a friendly ally to the heroes. Just an all-around excellent cetacean. In the Tamers universe, Whamon evolves to MarineAngemon, meaning one of the biggest Digimon evolves to one of the smallest. I dig it.

The final default line I'm going to talk about today is the Otamamon line. Otamamon is a half-metamorphosed tadpole that is also a singer. It crawls out onto rocks and practices its singing. While Otamamon prefers col water, it has a warm-water red recolor. It also has an x-antibody variant that is pretty ugly.

Otamamon evolves to Gekomon, which has an amazing singing voice and a face only a mother could love. They're born from musical data and are some of the greatest musicians in the Digital World but man are they ugly. That tongue gives me the creeps.

Gekomon evolves to ShogunGekomon or TonosamaGekomon, which is where the line ends as they don't have a dedicated mega/ultimate level. It's still really gross to look at and still a great musician that leads choruses of Gekomon. I don't really have much else to say about it.

Now that the dedicated lines are done with (the Jellymon line is in the mermaid post), I'll do more freeform entries in a post coming soon to dashboards near you.

Rough thoughts on the movie in no particular order now that I have a moment:

Going in with the heavy hitters 'cause I can't stop thinking about it but Lui's claims that he is the first person to ever partner with a Digimon are unsubstantiated and lack hard evidence - also, unless it was explained in Kizuna and Tri, I'm pretty sure Digimon Adventure contradicts this?? (I'll check into this when I have more time, don't @ me).

The implication that Ukkomon made all of the Digimon hostile towards one another so that the Digi-Destined would fight to defend themselves and therefore Lui is nonsense and even if there is nothing to directly contradict it in Adventure and 02, I'm gonna hard pass on that canon because it lends itself too much to the idea that all Digimon would just be wholesome and good if not for Ukkomon making them fight and that feels like it excuses the things that Devimon, Piedmon, MaloMyotismon, and the other villain Digimon did or removes their free will?

Also, have I mentioned what Lui said didn't make sense???? Lui might be closer to Tai's age so it's feasible he could have become digi-destined around the same time as Tai but DUDE, Owikawa and Cody's dad discovered the Digital World and Digimon when they were kids????? AND THAT WAS AGES BEFORE LUI WAS BORN. It just doesn't make sense unless this is some alternate universe where that didn't happen or Lui is a time traveler or something (which is possible they did time travel...)

Speaking of, I'm so interested in the implication that Lui went back in time and talked to his mom about his younger self and she seemed to snap out of it for a second, like, if that was a permanent change do you think he created another alternate reality in that instance?

Moving on though, Davis. DAVIS. Seeing him in the film cured my depression. His reaction to Lui's mom was so so so Davis and I felt so strongly about it and then Ken's immediate "we can't we could ruin our own future" response is exactly how I've always imagined a time-travel AU would go between them.

ALSO: DAVIS AND KEN. The flirting. Ken just straight up grabbing both of Davis hands. (He's so COMFORTABLE WITH HIMSELF NOW) Ken throwing himself off Paildramon after Davis. I'm LIVING. The little high five they did to congratulate themselves. Ken's remark that summoning Paildramon was a little much seconds after I was like "wow that's so gay and unnecessary". Both of them were just so on point in this film. Davis was upbeat and optimistic and just believes the best in people/digimon so hard and when his tendency to charge in got in the way Ken was there to mellow him out so he didn't do anything rash.

Yolei did feel kind of off for some reason in the film but that might have been because I was so excited for the film that I couldn't pay attention to everything that was happening. I was only able to see it once and I missed so many things I know it. I can't wait for it to be released physically so I can own it and just rewatch it a dozen times.

Speaking of Yolei, though, I cannot believe the film framed her like Uhura trying to come between Kirk and Spock (which is comically absurd btw). In nearly ever scene possible it's Davis, Yolei but slightly offset and then Ken beside Davis. Like the animators are desperate to push the Kenyako narrative, like, clearly they know about the Daiken feelings being very strong with fans but they were trying to visually remind us painfully hard that, hey, actually the pairing is Kenyako. But buddy did that feel forced and it's probably why Yolei felt off to me.

THEY COULD HAVE LET ROBBIE DAYMOND DO A TERRIBLE TEXAN ACCENT!!! THEY SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST TRIED!!!!

Kari actually didn't have very many major lines in the film I felt like but I loved the little scenes of her at the beginning, actually, though, she was kind of just there next to T.K. the entire time because the film also framed them together so hard it's SO WEIRD THEY AREN'T CANON.

T.K. though. God he was just so T.K. in this film. The trauma of losing Patamon in Adventure and then whatever happened in Tri like. It was just the most T.K. thing to do and say when they were talking about what they had to do. But also, I loved whenever the cops showed up and Davis goes "WHAT, HOW DID THEY FIND US?" and T.K. was like "ARE YOU KIDDING!???? YOU AND YOUR BOYFRIEND SUMMONED A GIANT FLYING MONSTER!!!!"

Honestly, this movie was everything I ever wanted really. About three minutes before we went into the movie I was talking about ghost game with my friend and how I wished it hadn't been for kids because it had such great and frankly horrifying concepts and everything was just sunshine and rainbows for children and nothing bad ever really happened which was disappointing.

And then I watched The Beginning. This movie felt so much like coming home from the start because I felt like I knew these character's so well (I lost count of how many times I sat in the theater and said a thing, only to have one of the character's also say the thing a second later), and everything was so bright and nice and then it became an eldritch horror show.

Let me tell you, when I watched the trailer for the first time I said to my friend "dude what was with that trailer??? The music????? Why is it so sinister???" and, despite that, I still did not see the horror coming and neither did anyone else in the theater. Everyone and I do mean everyone went very still and quiet and tense the second the first hint of bad began. We were all so unprepared and it was very upsetting.

As I was leaving the theater, I heard a woman fighting with her husband over having brought their very little daughter to see the movie. The mom clearly thought it was a fun kids movie because it was animated and whoever is in charge of American films absolutely thinks all animated movies are for kids so it wasn't rated which is how the film industry always handles anime films.

They seem completely incapable of understanding that animation doesn't equal child friendly. Watching it, though, it's never been more clear that a Digimon movie was for older audiences than watching The Beginning. Like, this film was not for kids. This film was for us. The setting. The themes. The fact that 79% of the entire movie is exposition/dialogue...

When the little girl's dad asked her if she liked the film as it ended, he sounded strained and his wife was complaining that the film was going to give her nightmares and while his daughter said yes, she liked the film it was in a way that you could tell that no, she didn't really because she had no idea what was going on - it was bright and colorful and there were cute characters sometimes so that was probably fine but she couldn't have been older than six so it was probably very boring for her.

That is one of my few complaints about the film, actually. It was nearly all talking and exposition. I wish there had been more action. I wish it had been a little more light hearted and goofy at times. The eldritch horror/really messed up part of the movie felt like it went on forever but that might have just been my lack of prepardness for it. I was just so shocked even while my brain was like "yes, this is what we always wanted I AM LIVING" - also because I imagined that kind of awful, dark underbelly of the world of Digimon existing for the character's I already know and love.

Nothing is going to stop me from headcanoning that Davis reaction to Lui's mom being The Worst was so immediate and visceral because he's dealing with his own trauma from his mom's refusal to accept that he's trans, okay?

I didn't care a great deal for Lui and Ukkomon obviously disturbed me to no end - I know it wasn't Ukkomon's fault, they didn't know better but also it's fair to say that I was scarred for life about Lui's parents and the baseball bat scene and I would probably like Lui a lot more if his story weren't all conjecture and exposition. Also he was so negative (understandably) and was such a downer the entire film, honestly, thank god Davis and his endless queer energy was there to breakthrough to Lui and help him see the light of queerness friendship.

Anyway, did I mention Lui's claim that he's the first ever human to partner with a digimon doesn't make sense to me? I've thought about it a little more and, fine, maybe it's possible that Lui could be the first person to partner with a Digimon but the idea that everyone else became Digi-Destined because of him and Ukkomon still doesn't sit right. Oikawa didn't get a digimon until he was an adult and died and so even though he knew about Digi-World he technically didn't become Digi-Destined and the Digital World could have existed for ages before anyone partnered with a Digimon. Those things aren't mutually exclusive, I have to remind myself, but it just doesn't feel right to me and their claims being baseless seems more legit.

Okay, I'm done, that's it for my rough thoughts on the movie, I think. They probably won't get any clearer. I'm gonna use the film to further my Trans!Davis/Daiken headcanons for sure though.

One last thing though and it's that my friend said he hated Lui because Lui took away from the 02 kids and I had to remind him that Willis exists in Hurricane Touchdown and the majority of that film is Willis and Davis talking/fighting and the other kids just existing. It's not some wild new Digimon format to have a new Digi-Destined to center the plot around.

And speaking of the plot, a final thought is on the bit where their Digivices weren't relevant anymore. That isn't off-brand either actually. I don't like that they disappeared because I have an emotional attachment to them but I understand that the narrative was not needing to prove their bonds with their Digimon and therefore anyone can have strong bonds of real friendship with or without a Digivice aka being Digi-Destined - it also makes sense with the whole "we didn't need the tags and crests to Digivolve our Digimon because our real strength comes from within" narrative that the OG Digimon Adventure established. The Digivices and tags/crests were just tools to remind them of their bonds with one another.

Anyway, that's it. I'm shutting up. This post got so long I'm sorry but also if anyone wants to share their thoughts on the movie or my bad takes but in a fun way that's cool feel free. I'm always here to talk about Digimon and how this is gonna influence all my future headcanons things but seriously don't @ me out of malice. K THX

* Mina Lovett gets her name from Mina Harker from Dracula; by a stroke of luck, “Wilhelmina” is also a name attributed to Mrs. Lovett.

* Allen Lecarde’s name is obviously supposed to sound like “Alucard”—Dracula backwards. This is commented on in-universe.

* Arya Mournblade, the main character of an in-universe film franchise, gets her name from Arya Stark of A Song of Ice and Fire fame.

* Yorick’s witch coven member Red Death is a big shout out to the works of Edgar Allen Poe, from his moniker to his real name (Fortunato) to the name of his raven familiar (Lenore).

* Cyrus Lovelace gets his surname from the villain of The Amulet of Samarkand.

* Rose Milliner gets her name from the psychic vampire Rose the Hat from Doctor Sleep.

* The surname of the Cullens family is inspired by the family of the same name from Twilight.

* Vampire clown Wayne Nicol’s last name is a sort of twist on Pennywise from It; instead of a PENNY, he’s a NICOL, because as a good guy he’s worth more. Harhar.

I think I know what part of the problem is when it comes to Edelgard.

Remember how in the Nintendo Dream interview the devs talked about not wanting to do a golden route where everyone lives, saying it would take away from players of other routes and make a bigger push for it to be the canonical ending. We saw this happen with Fates, with people upset at how Revelations undermined both Birthright and Conquest by being that (almost) everybody lives ending. I've put down Digimon Survive myself because it locks it's golden ending behind NG+. By making one route appear to be better than the others, it makes players more inclined to support that route which is a problem when they only expected most to finish one.

Sure, Flower might have a lot of subtext and implications that it's the villain route and is noticably shorter than the other routes, but it's meant to appear as though it's just as heroic as the other three routes. Edelgard being the villainous Flame Emperor was the twist of the game, but players elected to side with her anyway therefore it was made to look no worse than the other routes. It's also why they want to focus on the Academy stage of the game. It's before the big reveal, and this is the problem.

Years later, the franchise is still treating Edelgard being a baddie as a big shocking secret.

Look at what we saw in Engage. We have Edelgard saying that the three Lords protected their respective worlds, except that's not the case at all. Claude and Dimitri joined with the Church, fought the Empire, tried to save Rhea and took out TWSITD. Edelgard, alternatively, killed Dimitri, killed or exiled Claude, killed Rhea, continued to work with TWSITD helping them accomplish their goals, let Hubert and Byleth take out TWSITD after they were no longer useful to her, conquered Fodlan with Japanese text implying her armies are marching on other countries afterwards. To say that these stories all protect the same world is absurd. Likewise, Byleth's trial takes place in the chapter where the reveal happens. Byleth takes the Flame Emperor's place while summoning phantoms reflecting each one of the lords to help him fight, keeping the true identity of the Flame Emperor a secret.

Granted, with Engage it keeps the spoilers for all the games a secret in an attempt to bait new players. Like Sigurd dying in the middle of his game, or Lyn and Hector being friends with Roy's father (with Lyn being a candidate for his mom). But with Byleth, we get clues that point to Byleth being from Silver Snow. Their trial theme is contains the song of the Nabateans (associated with them and Rhea), Edge of Dawn (the main theme of the game which full text reveals Byleth and Edelgard became enemies) and Our Paths Shall Never Cross (I think that's the name, showing Byleth and Edelgard going their separate ways). We also receive the Byleth Emblem when Hortensia defects from her country, resolving to fight it and those pulling it and her father's strings, much like how the Black Eagles side with the Church in Silver Snow against their country which is being manipulated from the shadows by TWSITD with Ionius implied to be their puppet.

Cipher also opted to depict post-timeskip designs, using Silver Snow as the base for it's Black Eagles-themed expansion, but then we get Heroes and it's commitment to have characters...prevent War-era characters from warning their academy era counterparts about what's going to happen to try and stop the war. Then there's Hopes, which focuses more on the war but also tries to say this is what the characters would be like without Byleth. Hopes tries to make all routes worse than their Houses counterparts to not undermine that game, degrading itself int he process while at the same time to not deal with the big twist of that game, trying to say all three of the Lords are pretty bad on their own in different ways.

This commitment to not having a golden route is where the problems all stem. If you want to do a game where you have contrasts like the path towards enlightenment and the path of the beast, oudou vs hadou, or seeking the truth or embracing comforting lies and ignorance, then by trying to put them on equal footing you're not really saying anything. Or are you really going to treat giving a political voice to the commoners as just as good as consolidating power upon the throne so it's leader can shape Fodlan towards her social Darwinist vision?

Edelgard being the villain is a twist, with IS still acting like the cat isn't out of the bag because if they do, then Flower is going to be less appealing and therefore have less people viewing it as the canonical end. Yet at the same time, it's an offshoot of the Black Eagles route, the one where players must fight against their lord character while the other two lords (and unrecruited students/staff) die off-screen. We must fight against two of our former students while not having the opportunity to reach out to other classes. That's the way the story should go, since the game is framed as Byleth's story and the options that unlock Flower are framed as changing it. It's why the Eagles get the biggest character pushes, why the games use Eagle-themed picks for it's loading menus, why the devs said that Byleth's flag is the games Fire Emblem to them... In many ways, Silver Snow best encapsulates what they wanted to do with the game. It's silver, not a golden route. You can save who you can but not everyone, and you'll still have to end Edelgard.

Year in Review: Books Pt 1

Tumblr deleted the entire first draft of this, which is cool and awesome. It was too long anyways. These aren't meant to be full on analytic reviews, just blurbs about my experience with the books and what I thought about them. I might move into more in depth stuff later on next year.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

He was pride. She was prejudice. Can I make it anymore obvious?

I started this on CD audiobook for the first half before driving my car off of a cliff. I was fine, but Elizabeth Bennet was a casualty of the accident, so I found the rest of the book on Libby with a different reader who had Very different vibes. It kind of fit how I felt about the book. Jane Austen is very good at regaling the audience from Elizabeth's point of view about how Darcy is the shittiest man alive, while turning at the halfway point to reveal he is actually the Only Good Victorian Man to exist.

I've seen this tale play out in both BBC and Keira Knightley formats, which are both fantastic in their own right, but I was significantly more invested in the characters this time around, especially the supporting cast. Elizabeth/Darcy romance was very cute, Jane and Bingley was adorable, Elizabeth's shitty cousin was hilarious. I like the glimpses of how she thinks about the rest of her family that you don't get in the movie. She hates how her dad views her mother as entertainment, she hates how her mother treats her children like products to be sold, she hates how her younger sisters make them all look silly. Damn she's really hateful, huh? Almost like she's preju-OHHHHHHHH.

Coraline by Neil Gaiman

The Funny Cat, The Spider Mom, and the Weird Door

This was a book I was excited to get into. The movie freaked me out when I was little, as did it everyone else, and I'll get to that since I watched it immediately after this. Maybe this Friday. But it isn't anywhere near as vividly horrific as the OG Evil Narnia. In a fun way. There's an implication in this book that the Other World and Other Mother are just two of many possible little horrors that live under your bed or behind the door that shouldn't be there that want to hurt and/or eat you. Kind of like real life. That's okay though, you can get through it alive. And Coraline proves it.

I like her a lot as a character. She isn't near as naive as she is in the movie, and catches on to the nature of what's happening on the end of night one, thus Other Mother kidnapping her parents to serve as motivation to come back. That gives the book freedom to explore the Other World and its nature thoroughly, and watch as it all crumbles around Coraline. I like that everything is just a bunch of bugs stretched into the visage of pleasant things by a giant spider. I also love that spider's contrary motivation. She needs to feed, but there is also a genuine desire to love Coraline, to be a mother, whatever her bizarre conception of what that means. Evil hungry desire is more pressing though. Get in my web, girl.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis

Digimon season one for 1950s British kids.

At some point I decided to reread all of the Narnia books. I got through like, 4 of them in a weird order due to how Libby works. I promise I do read physical stuff its just hard to find the time to finish them. The first book the Narnia line up was originally written for my boy Clive's real life goddaughter Lucy Barfield , who was temporarily displaced as a child during WWII, as a children's story. He even dedicated the book and maybe the whole series to her. However, by the time he finished this one she was already an adult and "too old for fairytales." Classic blunder. I'll still read your stuff, Clive.

The whole of Narnia is a wintery wonderland turned on its head, its magic and majesty suffocating under a thick sheet of ice. Jadis is a very cool antagonist. She's not super complex, but she's a very strong character and extremely threatening villain, as we see throughout the series. The Pevinsies all have a sweet relationship. Edmond's an asshole in a very realistic sense, but they all care deeply for each other in an even more realistic way. The end of the book starts a pattern Mr. Lewis likes to repeat where a quick epilogue is hamfisted into the end that blows over large swaths of time in a hurry to resolve everything. I have problem's with that in later books, but it works best here, skipping to the famous reveal that time moves much faster in Narnia, and two decades or so only equals a few minutes in our world. A little fucked up. Go through puberty again, Pevinsies, this time in BRITISH SCHOOL.

Prince Caspian by Clive

Ocarina of Time for 1950s British kids.

The second book in the series gives more context to the world Narnia lives in, while also screwing with our perception of what Narnia is in first place. A previously unmentioned country to the east invades and colonizes Narnia, oppressing its people and removing magic wherever they can. Lewis can write about the complexities of colonization as he actually comes from a country familiar with this kind of shit, believe it or not. Who are they conquered by? A country of Minotaurs? Dragons? Wayward dwarves still allegiant to Jadis? Humans??? What the hell?

Turns out Narnia is the weird magic fairytale place even within its own universe. Everywhere else is inhabited by eternally 18th century European style society. It's also 1000 years later, but a year for our dudes, so the Pevinsies get to experience how Narnia has changed physically in all that time. Like Cair Paravel, that place two whole pages mention in the first book. I like that the age reversal thing is acknowledged in this book, and how that might have affected our heroes and their development. At the end of the book, the colonizing force gets sent to Earth, and Prince Caspian is crowned as King Caspian. Aslan (or maybe one of animals, idr) says outright that Narnia is better ruled by humans than its own people. Which is. An odd note to end on a book whose main conflict is colonization. Huh.

A Horse and His Boy by C. Staples L.

He was a horse. He was his boy. Can I make it anymore-okay shut up.

This is an interesting one. Five books into the Narnia series and we are introduced to brand new protagonist, with zero connections to previous characters, in a place that is not Narnia. He's a young boy who runs away with a talking horse in their desperate attempt to both escape slavery. They meet a spunky, ass-kicking princess who's also running away, this time from an arranged marriage. Narnia in this story is more of an ideal their working towards, rather than a physical place the story spends time in. The plot is very refreshing in this aspect, especially if its the fifth, or in my case, third Narnia book you've read in a row. It could likely stand on its own outside the rest of the series, though you do get a surprise cameo from the adult Pevinsies pre-wardrobe-return, which is fun.

I do have a couple issues with it though. I'd argue against the idea that all of Narnia is a direct analogue to Christianity. Aslan is definitely furry Jesus, and C. S.'s theological beliefs are an obvious intentional aspect of the storytelling, but most of the books have themes and lessons outside of that and pose a genuinely fun fantasy world to engage with. The religious metaphors in this book specifically are pretty heavy-handed though, and not very delicately woven in. The setting of the story also pulls allusions to several real-life Middle Eastern cultures, and if you think a white British dude in the 50s wrote about that respectfully? Sorry no. There's also a lot of mention of Boy (I straight up forgot that kids name) being Special and Different for having pale skin and blue eyes. :/. At the end is another rapid-fire epilogue that blazes through Boy's life as the new prince of wherever that I think the story could have gone without. Just let it end with dignified mystery, Clive.

The Magician's Nephew by Siwel S. C.

Honestly Clive the mulitverse trope has been done to death, bro

Last Narnia book on the list as of now. Luckily, its also the best one. This is a prequel to the whole of the Narnia continuity, which details the creation of Narnia and the origins of Jadis, but the actual plot revolves around two new Brit kids Digory and Polly. Digory is described as grubby at least sixteen times throughout the story. His mom is sick and his magic uncle sucks ass and he's scared and he has no friends. Polly decides to be that friend which ultimately burns her as he's also a bit of a selfish brat. Learning to get past that brattiness and mature enables Polly to forgive him and ultimately helps him save his mother.

The plot takes place in the Wood Between Worlds, which has still stuck in my head and spurned on my imagination years later. You move outside of Earth to find the grandness of the Milky Way, you escape the Milky Way to discover the imperceivable majesty of the universe, and you find the indeterminate edge of that universe and land yourself in an idyllic forest with trees so high you cannot see the sky, the forest's floor dotted with puddles leading to other worlds. Jadis' origin is also pretty fascinating. A queen so obsessed with ultimate power she destroyed her own empire rather than let her sister take it. Aslan roars the world into existence. The whole vibes on this book are pretty stellar, ngl.

The Bell Jar by Silvia Plath

You wouldn't be cool if it weren't for the lessons that you learnt in the BELL JAR, nah, nana nah nah.

And now for a weird fucking heel turn. And also the last book I'm doing for now. I'm going to be honest, my original interest in this book came from the song "I Cut Myself" by Talkshow Boy, who mentions the book in the above lyric. Also, my college roommate said she liked it a lot. I went in with zero expectations and was surprised at how hard it hit home. I've never been personally institutionalized, but I know people who have, and I can relate to the downward depression spiral Esther goes through in this book.

Its interesting to see the thought patterns and paradigms that Esther voices in her inner monologues that partially lead to her mental break. Little observations that reveal her hyper-awareness and implicit nihilism. They're good observations too. The vivid description of the horrific image of a woman giving birth compared to a dulled animal being hooked into a machine. You can see her perspective on a lot of subjects, probably even agree with much of it. It makes sense, as this is the author famous for vivid and introspective poetry more than anything. Looking at the historical context for this book made me sad, especially given how hopeful the ending was, at least how I read it.

Going to shift into movies at the end of the week. I'll need to start doing these at least bi-weekly if I want to finish before the end of the year. Also more bisexually.

Ch. 29

-We get a Taichi-free chapter where it's Leomon's turn to shine! Of course he dies, because Leomon always dies lol. I felt bad for the baby digimon who lost their mentor :'c

Ch. 30

-Oh oops, I guess Leomon wasn't dead. Coulda fooled me! This time it was HolyAngemon/Seraphimon's time to shine. I thought it was interesting how HolyAngemon digivolved by removing his "seal." That's a new one.

-The "Super Ultimate" digivolution is confusing since "Ultimate" means something different in dub vs. sub of the anime. I guess they're going for the Japanese version where ultimate is usually the final digivolution.

-Seraphimon unleashes his attack!

(Does anyone else remember that show? I never watched it but it used to be on all the time lol).

Ch. 31

-They did the whole "this is my REAL body" thing with Venom Vamdemon. Still one of my least favorite digimon designs. It felt a little anti-climactic that Zero ended the whole thing in one blow, especially after Leomon and Holy Angemon struggled. Kinda sus power-levels there.

-They reveal that Neo needs to find a digimental to get Arkadimon to "super ultimate," which threw me off. I thought Arkadimon was a special, artificially created digimon that was special BECAUSE it could reach super ultimate. Now they're saying that any digimon can reach super ultimate via a digimental? Okaaaay...

-Hideto enters the scene with his Omegamon. Another digimon that feels weird to be partnered with a tamer. It also feels weird to demote these boss-level digimon to mid-bosses. Kinda makes them feel less impressive.

-Never heard the name "Hideto" before, but a quick Google suggests it's normal...sounds kinda weird to me.

Ch. 32

-So I uh...literally got spoiled about the siblings twist right before I read this chapter because I looked something up in the wiki and saw Rei's last name. D'oh! I guess it's not that shocking when we know next to nothing about her anyways...

-I found it kind of interesting how the gang question if they're on the right side or not since Omegamon is supposed to be "a force for justice." It's a little annoying that this franchise keeps flip-flopping on whether some digimon are just innately good or not. They also kind of implied that Omegamon being a vaccine digimon means he's good too...I just want some consistency.

Ch. 33

-So we get Hideto's backstory in the chapter. The fact that the first 2 Alias characters were all quirky and he's just some normal, cool guy tells me he'll be a little more fleshed out.

-They really thought "Warg" and "Melga" were good names for Digimon (I get that it's from WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon but still...I guess everything sounds better in Japanese).

-So Neo's main motivation for taking over the digital world is to cure his sister's paraplegia? Uhhh...pretty sure wheelchair bound people still live very fulfilling lives, so that's weak.

Ch. 34

-A very interesting explanation of how digimons' lifespans work. Essentially, digimon express themselves by rapidly overwriting their data and digimon that process these overwrites at a faster rate have the downside of have a shorter lifespan. They used the analogy of how overwriting DVDs/CDs can degrade them. The part that threw me off is that Hideto was like "that's right, Zero has a short lifespan, meaning he can't digivolve any further." I thought they meant short lifespan as-in, he'll die soon, not a digivolution limitation? (Do digimon die of old age in this universe?)

-I like that Hideto seems to have some compassion while battling and tries to get Taichi to give up. He's a nice contrast to Neo who's always in crazy villain mode.

This volume felt really short and like not too much happened, just a bunch of battles with some backstory peppered in. It seems like the whole Neo Saiba thing won't go on for 4 more volumes, so I wonder where the story will go after his defeat? Maybe Demon would be next? I honestly keep forgetting about him because he never shows up lol.

Olympos 12 Next gen partner-ups- Just Savers/Data Squad edition

Now that I’ve discussed who would be partnered with which members of the Olympos VII in both a “next gen crossover between Adventure and Savers” scenario and “Just of the 02 epilogue kids” scenario, I will now discuss who would be partnered with the Olympos VII in the event of Savers getting a next gen sequel focusing on their kids. While I think Adventure is more likely to have a Next Gen sequel at all, Savers is more likely to have its own next gen series (should it have one) assign all of the next Gen kids Olympos VII partners as so far it is the only Digimon Anime continuity to be canonically confirmed to have the Olympos 12, even though Mercurymon was the only member to appear in that series (and for reasons that should be obvious to anyone who has seen Savers/Data Squad, he will also be the only one who will not be assigned a partner). For those who did not see my post speculating why Mercurymon is the only member of the Olympos VII to appear in Savers, I speculated that the majority of the Olympos VII were given a potion that cursed to revert to digieggs and remain as such until humans who are compatible with them came along. 

I’ll start by recapping the ones I’ve already speculated on

Dianamon- her partner would be Tohma’s daughter, whom I have dubbed Natsuki. Tohma and his partner, Gaomon, are associated with the moon and the color blue like Dianamon, so partnering Tohma’s daughter up with Lunamon/Dianamon was a no-brainer. 

Apollomon- I would assign Apollomon to Masaru’s son. Now you’re probably wondering, “how can Masaru have a kid? He moved to the Digital World, where there are no other humans, not to mention he’s probably aroace.” Well I have come up with all sorts of explanations as to how Masaru can have a kid ranging from “making him out of sand or magic clay ala Wonder Woman” to “drunken one-night stand with Maki from Tri.” Though if the idea of Masaru having a kid is too weird for you guys, we could instead give Natsuki a twin brother and make him Apollomon’s partner. However, I really like the idea of Apollomon’s partner having the same orange Digisoul and olive green eyes as the various members of the Daimon family, so I might have Tohma’s wife be a relative of the Daimon family (like a country cousin who came to stay with her uncle Suguru and aunt Sayuri to attend high school and she wound up hitting it off with Tohma).

Jupitermon- Again, he would be partnered with Suzume (Ikuto and Chika’s daughter)

Ceresmon- She’d be partnered with Yoshino’s daughter. 

Vulcanusmon- Vulcanusmon’s partnered would either a) another one of Tohma’s kids, b) the child of Masaru’s friend from episode 11 (blanking on his name), or c) one of the kids whose parents aren’t pre-established characters. 

Now onto the rest of the Olympos VII

Bacchusmon- In some of my other posts, I suggested that that Bacchusmon got so drunk that passed just before the massacre and stayed passed out until just after the events of Savers. My plans for a next gen story between the first six Anime have him pull a “you shall not pass” in order to give the heroes time to escape to the human world and he winds up getting captured by the villains and forcibly merged with Kouki (who consented to becoming a bio-hybrid again because he’s still obsessed with defeating Masaru). However, in the context of Savers getting a next gen story that DOESN’T cross over with the other anime, there’s a little more room to have him be partners with a member of the new generation. Since his domain is wine (hence why I usually imagine him as a mentor figure instead of being a partner Digimon), I would want his partner to be a young adult instead of a child. Since Bacchusmon is said to be friends with Ceresmon, whom I imagine being partnered with Yoshino’s daughter, I was also thinking that Bacchusmon's partner could be another relative of Yoshino’s, perhaps a niece or nephew. 

Minervamon- her partner (whom I imagine would also be a girl) would be either another one of Tohma’s kids or she would be Nanami’s daughter (who would be the maternal half-sister of Rei, more on him in the next section of this post).

Marsmon- he’s partnered with a boy (whom for argument sake I will call Rei; yes this is a Sailor Moon shoutout). I was thinking that Rei could be the illegitimate son of Nanami and Kouki. Maybe Kouki got back in touch with her a few years after Savers and they wound up having a messy romance that resulted in Nanami getting pregnant with Rei, at which point she broke up with Kouki without telling him about the kid because the idea of Kouki being a part of the kid’s life made her nervous. If Kouki finds out about Rei during this hypothetical next gen story (possibly while working with the main villain of the story), his initial reaction will be “Whatever. Back to figuring out how to beat Masaru once and for all.” Unlike Kouki (and Nanami for that matter), Rei is a relatively normal kid who heavily involved in the athletics at his school. Rei would also become good friends with Masaru’s son (assuming Masaru does indeed have a kid in this next gen story)

Junomon- I’m pretty content with Junomon being partnered with someone whose parents aren’t anyone of consequence. Also, I imagine Junomon’s partner would be a girl. 

Venusmon- Again, I’m content with Venusmon’s partner (whom I imagine would be a girl) not have pre-established characters for parents. Though if I had to make her partner be related to a pre-established character, I’d probably make her a relative of captain Satsuma (like a great-niece who lives with him, either temporalily while she’s attending high school or he legally adopted her after the untimely death of her parents). 

Neptunemon- Neptunemon’s partner (who would probably be a boy) would either not be related to anyone of consequence or he’ll be Yushima’s grandson or great-grandson

OG Digimon would definitely mesh well with the kverse. Not to mention, I feel like you'd have fun with the villains, and there weren't that many crazy digivolutions at this point in the series.

The animation rights are held by Daewon C&A Holdings, and it aired on Tooniverse from January 2, 2002. Until 2009, Power Digimon, Digimon Tamers, Digimon Frontier, and theatrical versions of the four series were released steadily, but they were not aired after that. [55]

From 2015 to 2016, JEI Talent TV did an HD remastered version. Popculture dragon review (humanoid) part 1

Dobrickmon from Digimon

4/10- An armored dragon man digimon that loves to see the world burn. The head and shoulders are nice, like the toothy armor. The legs look terrible and the gauntlets aren’t much better. And just, no on those titties.

King Koil from Ben 10 (reboot)

6/10- A dork. A king of serpents and can control reptiles. Decided to make a herpetologist his queen b/c she was nice to snakes. Man really said that he understands the concept of clothing and chooses to go ass out with just a cape and crown. Like the extra arms and his little scale sleeves.

Rani Nagi from The Secret Saturdays

7/10- I do love a good lady villain. Look at her ugly ass big ass alien ass head. That one strand of hair. Her twiggy ass lil pincher arms. I do like the coiling up of her neck that she does when talking to short people. Is supposed to be a naga, the naga queen, but done in the style of the snake taurs that people call nagas in the west. So points off for that last thing.

Duncan Rosenblatt from Firebreather (film)

5/10- Hmmm this bitch ugly and not in the way that I like. Visually this boy is very interesting. Like that exposed core in his transformed state and the scaly texture on his human form is neat. Those nail-claws are also interesting. But its just kinda ugly. Something about the facial structure and hair is just not doing it for me. Do like that he eats coal. Also, his fucking dad is the Image comics universe version of fucking Godzilla. His mom fucked Godzilla. And divorced Godzilla.

Ursula from The Little Mermaid

8/10- She’s thick and working it. Love the vibes. I ain’t notice before but woman got an ass on her. Also she’s magic and a shapeshifter as a proper dragon should be. Also purple and black go great together.

Megidramon from Digimon Tamers

10/10- Listen, this bitch sexy. It’s so gods damn cool looking. Fucking god dragon of the apocalypse and feel like it. Love the flame like aspects on the arm blades and the wing color. That purple jaw is a nice little contrast. Also love the pseudo double mouth thing its got going on. Ya’ll don’t know how much I LOVE face-’out of control monster’ turns. And the fact that it tried to eat a bitch? I’m in love.

Shendu from Jackie Chan Adventures

9/10- Speaking of sexy. My man Shendu is the father of an entire generation of furries.  He’s got all the dragon powers. Can control the elements, shapeshift, even astral project and possess people (two dragon powers you really don’t get to see a lot of in pup culture). He’s got a nice face with the row of horns and lil fin mustache. I will say his coloring is kinda... bland. He’s just green with a yellow underbelly. That’s it. Do enjoy that he’s an evil Chinese dragon who can command western (more westerny) dragon minions.

Owlman from The Secret Saturdays

7/10- What a horrible horrible little bird. Nice.

The Queen of the Lair from She Creature

10/10- Probably the most gnarly mermaid I’ve seen in mermaid horror films. Her colors are hard to see in the actual film but are pretty nice. Love her weird bulgy squinty eyes. This lady goes out and finds humans to mind control/kill to feed her school. Shapeshifting into a more humanoid/attractive form to seduce humans is very much a very dragon ability.
