posting for @queerdrow (or anyone else who is having issues with bg3 patch 7). when i was having graphical issues with the p7 beta i emailed larian and got a very detailed response with lots of troubleshooting tips. hopefully something in here might be helpful!
Do you have any mods installed, or were you using any in previous game versions? If so, try completely removing them (check the 'Mods' and 'Public' folders in the '..\SteamApps\common\Baldurs Gate 3\Data' folder, etc; if present, both folders are safe to delete, which would already be done with a clean reinstall). The game uses the local AppData folder for the current user account: 'C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3'. For compatibility, if there is no local AppData folder for the game when it is started, but there is a game folder in My Documents, it will copy the profiles and configuration files over from the Documents folder, but that may mean copying old mods there, as well. If you didn't already check this, the easiest way to get to that folder would be to copy the line below into the location bar in Explorer and hit Enter. %LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\Mods The launcher should have created a log file listing any files in the install folder which are not expected, as well as files in the Mods folder. To check that, if applicable, copy the line below into the location bar in Explorer and hit Enter, then look for a text file named steam_4.1.1.5663793_alteredFiles.txt. %LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Launcher\Cache Old mods or partial pak files left over from a problem with an update are more likely to cause game issues; stray text files, etc, should not cause a problem, but they should be cleaned up anyway, to eliminate the warning. Try verifying local files: in the Steam library, right click on the game and select Properties, switch to the Local Files tab and then click on the 'Verify Integrity of Game Files…' button. With the GOG version, in the (optional) Galaxy client, select the game, then the settings icon at the top right (beside the Play button) and under Manage Installation select 'Verify / Repair'. If applicable, disable Steam cloud support either globally (in the client click on the Steam menu and select Settings, and then Cloud) or just for this game (in the library right click BG3 and select Properties, then switch to the General tab and check the Steam Cloud section). Alternately, exit out of the Steam client and just start the game directly from the executable when required (bg3.exe or bg3_dx11.exe in the '..\SteamApps\common\Baldurs Gate 3\bin' folder). Next, try browsing to the 'C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Larian Studios' folder and rename the 'Baldur's Gate 3' subfolder. The easiest way to get there would be to copy the line below into the location bar in Explorer and hit Enter. %LocalAppData%\Larian Studios This folder contains the saved games, configuration files and a level cache folder. Deleting or renaming it will get the game to recreate it on startup; playing the game from a different Windows user account would effectively do the same thing. With Steam running and cloud support enabled, the client would just download the cloud copy of your existing profile. If you played in Early Access and still have those profiles and saves, also browse to the '..\Documents\Larian Studios' folder and rename the 'Baldur's Gate 3' subfolder there (or delete it if you don't want to keep the saves), so the game does not copy the game's earlier Documents folder to the local AppData folder (as part of the startup procedure if there is no existing local AppData folder). After that, start the game, start a new playthrough and check that you can save properly in a new game. If that works, exit and copy a couple saves from the renamed folder into the newly created profile's ..\Savegames\Story folder. If that helps in general, move the rest of the saves over. If that doesn't help, delete the new BG3 folder and extract the replacement folder from the download below into your '..\Local\Larian Studios' folder to test.
The graphicSettings.lsx file is set to 1280x720 Windowed mode and Very Low quality preset, which you can change in the options (manually, or hit autodetect) if this helps. If the game still has the same issues, delete the replacement BG3 folder and rename the original back again (as well as in the Documents folder, if applicable).

The Ultimate Guide to a C-Level Executive List: Benefits, Uses, and How to Build One
In the fast-paced world of B2B marketing, reaching decision-makers is crucial for any successful campaign. One of the most effective ways to do this is by utilizing a C-level executive list—a curated database of top-level executives across industries. This list typically includes Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), Chief Financial Officers (CFOs), Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs), Chief Technology Officers (CTOs), and other “Chief” titled professionals responsible for strategic decision-making in their organizations.
But what exactly is a C-level executive list? How is it built, what benefits does it offer, and how can businesses effectively leverage it? This comprehensive guide answers all these questions and more.
What is a C-Level Executive List?
A C-level executive list is a compiled database of individuals who hold the highest-ranking positions within a company. These are the key people who control budgets, make high-level purchasing decisions, and set the strategic direction of their organizations.
Typical entries in a C-level executive list include:
CEO – Chief Executive Officer
CFO – Chief Financial Officer
COO – Chief Operating Officer
CMO – Chief Marketing Officer
CTO – Chief Technology Officer
CIO – Chief Information Officer
CHRO – Chief Human Resources Officer
CDO – Chief Data/Digital Officer
CSO – Chief Strategy Officer
CISO – Chief Information Security Officer
These professionals are considered "C-suite" due to the "Chief" designation, indicating their authority and role at the top of the corporate ladder.
Why Businesses Need a C-Level Executive List
1. Access to Key Decision-Makers
C-level executives hold the power to approve high-value deals. Whether you offer enterprise software, consulting services, or niche industry products, c-level executive list contacting these decision-makers directly can significantly shorten your sales cycle.
2. Enhanced Lead Quality
By targeting C-level executives, your outreach focuses on leads with the highest potential ROI. These contacts are more likely to have the authority and budget to make purchasing decisions, resulting in higher-quality leads.
3. Strategic Account-Based Marketing (ABM)
A well-segmented C-level executive list can be the backbone of your ABM campaigns. With precise data, your sales and marketing teams can tailor messages to specific executives based on their roles, industries, and business challenges.
4. Faster Deal Closures
Reaching out directly to decision-makers helps avoid unnecessary gatekeepers and bureaucracy. This streamlined communication can reduce the time it takes to move a deal from prospecting to closing.
5. Global Business Expansion
A robust list of international C-level executives enables you to explore new markets and expand your global footprint. Whether you're entering Europe, Asia, or Latin America, having direct access to C-level professionals is invaluable.
Components of a High-Quality C-Level Executive List
Not all lists are created equal. To maximize results, your C-level executive list should contain detailed and accurate information, including:
Full Name
Job Title
Company Name
Email Address (Verified)
Direct Phone Number
LinkedIn Profile
Company Size
Industry
Location (City, State, Country)
Revenue Range
Technology Stack (if available)
Having these data points allows for better segmentation, personalization, and targeting—key components of any effective marketing or sales outreach.
How to Build a C-Level Executive List
There are three primary ways to acquire or build a C-level executive list:
1. Manual Research
You can create your list manually using platforms like LinkedIn, Crunchbase, company websites, and industry directories. While this method offers high accuracy, it is extremely time-consuming and labor-intensive.
2. Data Vendors
Purchasing a C-level executive list from reputable data vendors is the most time-efficient method. Vendors like ZoomInfo, Lusha, UpLead, and InfoGlobalData provide up-to-date and verified data based on your target criteria.
Pros:
Verified contact data
Fast delivery
Industry and role-based segmentation
Cons:
Subscription or per-lead cost
Data freshness may vary
3. Lead Generation Tools
Lead intelligence tools like Apollo.io, Hunter.io, or Leadfeeder use AI and scraping technology to help you find C-level contacts based on your filters. These platforms often integrate with CRMs and provide email verification.
Best Practices for Using a C-Level Executive List
1. Segment Your List
Segmenting your list by industry, company size, location, or specific role helps you tailor your outreach effectively. For instance, your message to a CFO should differ significantly from that to a CTO.
2. Personalize Your Outreach
C-level executives receive dozens of emails daily. Stand out by customizing your email with specific insights about their business or referencing industry trends that matter to them.
3. Use Multi-Channel Campaigns
Combine email marketing with LinkedIn InMail, phone calls, and even direct mail to increase touchpoints. A multi-channel strategy improves response rates and brand visibility.
4. Comply with Data Privacy Laws
Ensure that your list complies with data regulations like GDPR (Europe), CAN-SPAM (US), and CASL (Canada). Use opt-in data wherever possible and provide easy opt-out options.
5. Update Regularly
Executive roles change frequently. Regularly clean and verify your list to avoid bounced emails and outdated data. Most vendors offer periodic updates or real-time data refreshes.
Industries That Benefit Most from C-Level Executive Lists
While nearly any B2B business can benefit from reaching C-level decision-makers, the following industries gain particular value:
Enterprise Software Providers
Consulting and Advisory Firms
SaaS Companies
Financial Services
Recruiting and Staffing Agencies
Marketing Agencies
Cybersecurity Vendors
IT Services and Infrastructure Companies
These sectors often deal with high-ticket solutions and need to speak directly with top-level stakeholders to drive meaningful conversations.
Challenges in C-Level Outreach (And How to Overcome Them)
1. Low Response Rates
C-level executives are busy and selective about who they engage with. To combat this:
Use compelling subject lines
Keep emails short and relevant
Provide value immediately (e.g., whitepapers, case studies)
2. Gatekeepers
Admins and executive assistants often screen communication. You can bypass this by:
Reaching out on LinkedIn
Sending personalized video messages
Using referral introductions when possible
3. Data Inaccuracy
Outdated or incorrect data leads to bounced emails and wasted time. To avoid this:
Choose vendors with real-time verification
Use tools like NeverBounce or ZeroBounce
Validate emails before launching campaigns
ROI of a C-Level Executive List
The return on investment for a high-quality C-level executive list can be significant. A single conversion from a C-suite executive can lead to:
Long-term contracts
High-value deals
Strategic partnerships
Brand credibility boosts
When integrated into your CRM and marketing automation systems, this list becomes a powerful asset for nurturing long-term relationships.
Final Thoughts
A C-level executive list is more than just a collection of names and email addresses—it’s a strategic resource that fuels targeted B2B sales and marketing campaigns. With the right approach, businesses can unlock substantial growth, build influential relationships, and close deals faster by connecting directly with decision-makers.
Whether you build your list manually, use data vendors, or leverage automation tools, the key to success lies in quality, personalization, and strategy. As competition intensifies in every industry, gaining a direct line to the top of the corporate ladder is not just a luxury—it’s a necessity.
Thanks For Reading….

Stop cucking for Costco.
Ever since the 'support or deny DEI' lists were published, battle lines have been drawn- Target is now the enemy, but Costco and Dollar Tree are cool. A dozen or so company names on either side have been disseminated so you can Vote With Your Wallet and I'm 100% in support of that.
I'm absolutely disgusted that there are companies like Target who threw away diversity training and policies within hours of a political train wreck being sworn into office. It is the worst example of bootlicking by a corporation.
And while it's great that there are companies who were not as stupidly shortsighted, and some who openly publicized they would not back down to tyranny, that does not handwave away all the other behaviors they ARE complicit in.
And Costco's fall from grace has been very quietly happening since Covid. It's just that their C suite is very, very good at hiding their penny pinching, and they have an excellent track record of passing out the kool-aid to their loyal cult members.
Remember that the current CEO of Costco comes from Kroger, where he cut staffing and quality to line the pockets of shareholders. He's also the first CEO, and first C level executive, to be hired outside of Costco's employ- until he was hired, every single person at an administrative position or higher had to be promoted from within. So he's never held any position in a warehouse before.
Under this new leadership, warehouses have steadily cut their staffing hours to a skeleton crew. Especially support staff, like the 2nd person helping load your cart at checkout. Without support staff, longterm employees who are used to working nonstop are now expected to do the work of 2-3 people just as quickly as before, and they're steadily burning out and quitting.
This is by design.
Costco's reputation is built on the longevity of its workforce. There was a time when you walked into a Costco and were guaranteed to see 3-5 people with 20 year badges. Now most warehouses are lucky to have a couple 10 year employees.
The new CEO, and the new direction of the company under his leadership, is to burn out employees who are raise capped, move them out, and replace them with cheaper workers, all while steadily increasing the cap pay as a darkly ironic incentive- their biggest recruiting tool is the fact that you can cap out at thirty two dollars an hour... if you stay for twenty years. Young, energetic people apply for these jobs, never understanding that they will never reach that point, because they will burn out by year 10.
They are also starting to demand the Walmart method of quality standards in their Kirkland brands and other labels. Walmart used to pressure companies to use lower quality ingredients to meet their price or face not being sold, and Costco has been doing this repeatedly over the past 5 years. I know this because someone very close to me works for a major food company, and they are their company's Costco Representative. I've seen the paperwork and the emails where the buyers are demanding that they meet a certain price point, even if corners have to be cut, because they are under pressure from the new CEO. This person is also friends with dozens of people in the food industry that are facing the same problems with the Costco buyers. You can also see dozens of real life examples in the Costco subreddit, where people are posting before and after pics of packaging and ingredient list changes- and to be clear, these are not the typical shrinkflation changes every company is pulling, this is Costco specific packaging and recipes, like their Kirkland brand.
Anyway, long story short (too late), never forget that EVERY company wants to use you. Every company wants to take advantage of you. There is not a single company with a C level (corporation level) that wants to be your friend or is looking out for your best interest. Stop worshipping these fucking companies and championing them when they do the bare minimum. Absolutely boycott and try to avoid as much as possible, openly evil corporations, so long as you remember that they are ALL evil. Doing otherwise is an insult to the workers, who are disrespected by these companies on a daily basis, and suck it up because they have to pay their rent.

The precision and scalability of their approach were enhanced by Beewant’s partnership with Weaviate, another Intel Liftoff member. The quick, multimodal searchability that distinguishes Beewant is made possible in large part by Weaviate’s vector database.
This successful collaboration was made possible by Intel Liftoff’s ecosystem and networking possibilities. The increased computing capabilities that both of these firms have been able to take use of via the program were also the foundation for the collaboration’s success.
“Being able to communicate with other companies was one of the program’s finest features". We profited from being a member of the whole ecosystem in addition to the hardware and the team’s expertise. Because of how effectively the ecosystem functions, we were able to construct the Beewant solution so rapidly, according to Ahmed Joudad, CEO of Beewant.
Intel Innovation, Beewant
The partnership between Beewant and Intel is evidence of their dedication to enhanced performance and efficiency. To guarantee smooth data processing, they have successfully used Intel hardware, in particular the Intel Developer Cloud, Intel Data Center GPU Max, and 4th Generation Xeon Scalable CPUs. This partnership takes use of both CPU and GPU capabilities, enabling effective parallelization and quick data intake.
During the forthcoming Intel Innovation event, Beewant plans to demonstrate the possibilities of their platform. They will emphasize how they combine data from many company departments and make it queryable via their system as the main point of their presentation.

C-Level Executive's Email List Will Help You Improve Your B2B Marketing
The highest-ranked executive employees inside a company, C-level executives are commonly considered its most powerful and influential members. These executives define company policy, make crucial decisions, and ensure that daily business activities support the achievement of the organization's strategy.

Therefore, for effective business development, it is crucial to have positive interactions with these senior-most executives of those companies who are potential clients. In order to improve your B2B marketing efforts, it is helpful to have information about these C-Level Executives. This blog discusses the benefits of using a focused B2B marketing campaign's email list of C-level executives.
What exactly is the C-Level Executives Email List?

A C-Level Executives Email List is an assortment of email addresses, mailing addresses, and other forms of contact for different C-Suite executives who are connected to businesses of all sizes around the world. A c-level executive’s email list offers a single communication channel to engage with all of the top C-level professionals, including CEOs, CFOs, CTOs, and CIOs.
Generally, a C Level Executives Mailing List not only enables you to quickly contact with your targeted prospects, who are CEOs of major corporations throughout the world, but it also aids in ensuring the success of your b2b marketing efforts.
What Various Data Fields Are There In The Database For C-Level Executives?
It is not sufficient to know a C-level executive's name and email address when trying to contact them through phone, mail, or email. Before communicating with these kinds of leaders, the majority of clever marketers gather a lot of data on them. Let's examine three data pieces that a marketer could take from the database of c-level executives:
Geography - Age, gender, and job description, though they may seem like fairly basic details, can be helpful beginning points for figuring out what C-level executive communications should contain.
Industry - Which marketing approach would be most successful would depend on the educational background and present academic interests. You can get this information in news stories or LinkedIn profiles.
Multiple Topics - This is a factor that, in terms of its capacity to affect C-level executive decision-making, is frequently disregarded. Determining the most effective communications strategy can be aided by looking at these CEOs' social media posts, which give a solid idea of their tastes and thinking outside of their line of work.
Let's look at how C-Level data might improve your B2B marketing initiatives.
The majority of effective marketers invest a lot of time and energy in acquiring information from C-level executives. Nevertheless, figuring out how to maximize the benefits of that data is more crucial. Here are some ways that c-level data might improve your b2b marketing initiatives:
1. Begin with straightforward requests
It is possible to view an effective email sent to a CEO or COO as a modest accomplishment in itself. However, it could be challenging to get a response if the mail asks for something that takes a lot of time, effort, or resources. To begin the conversation, make a brief request for the appropriate person to contact or express gratitude for attending one of the events.
2. Speak to the purchasing committee and the C-suite
Most marketers focus on information about the CEOs when discussing C-level data. You should be aware, though, that for the vast majority of these CEOs, their executive assistants handle all correspondence, scheduling, and travel on their behalf. They frequently act as a gatekeeper, keeping unwelcome visitors out, and they might be the cause of all or portion of the silence you receive from others. Because of this, gathering useful information about executive assistants and applying that information successfully are essential.
3. Network connection
It's possible that you've gathered an alot of information that will help your marketing efforts. However, you can't afford to ignore the executives' technological and social networks, which are another excellent source of knowledge. Friends from college, former employees, and even housing societies in the cities where the executives live can all be helpful contacts for these C-Level Executives.
4. Create A Multi-Channel Plan
You must create a strategy that integrates numerous channels in order to communicate with various individuals at the target accounts in order to achieve your company goals. There are numerous ways to get in touch with the buying committee and C-Level Executives. The following are a few of these methods:
Postal mail
E - Mail
Making calls
Internet marketing
Activities
Facebook ads
Personalization of websites
The conclusion
The professional sector of C-suite personnel has been one of the most prevalent in the United States. With approximately 2,100,000 top executives working, there are several prospects for marketers who want to interact with wealthy customers. To reach such a specialist group and build a strong brand presence, you'll need a highly relevant C-level executive’s email list.

tips and tricks on writing the kaibacorp environment
yes, this is pedantic. but more than that, YES i love small background details that lend a greater sense of accuracy and structure to a fictional world. this is not a complete or exhaustive list. (you are, of course, free to ignore and do whatever you want.)
Kaiba Corporation does not have "clients" - Kaiba doesn't do project work for hire; he's not an attorney or a consultant or an architect, he doesn't do billable hours. his meetings are most likely with his investors or business partners like Pegasus, with his board or c-suite executives (e.g., his chief technology officer, his chief legal officer, his chief human resources officer, etc.), various departmental meetings he might find interesting, and so on. Kaiba Corporation does have customers (the people who BUY the duel disk)/consumers (the people who USE the duel disk) but people who go to Kaiba Land will probably be referred to as visitors or guests. his primary responsibility, as the CEO of a publicly-traded corporation, is creating (financial) value for his shareholders and investors. (whether or not he gives a fuck about this responsibility is up to you.) .
Unless it's something he is responsible for, like quarterly earnings calls and shareholder calls, Kaiba doesn't have to finish or work on reports; he has very few deadlines he himself has to meet; he is not reviewing anything except the most important documents. Even then, as the CEO/president, someone is probably writing the most important documents FOR him and then handing it over for him to present or read off later - which he might revise/adjust as he likes. Kaiba's workdays most likely consist mainly of meetings where people report on how things are going to him, setting business strategy with the c-suite, meeting with the more heavy-hitting investors (for the drama: 'we will withdraw our investments unless you do X,') and writing a bajillion emails. .
Kaiba and Mokuba do not do any hiring or interviewing except for c-suite positions, because those are the people they work with most directly every day, and the people they most need to know are capable, qualified, and competent. they are way too busy to sit down with each one of the 38783 entry-level candidates Kaiba Corp combs through every day. for positions like their executive assistants or chief of staff, who might manage day-to-day schedules and do things like order lunch, an HR manager narrows the field to several qualified candidates and THEN Kaiba would make the final decision on who he wants to hire. .
No one is getting past the front desk at a place like Kaiba Corp without an appointment or a badge. Any given visitor X has to check in at the front desk - the front desk receptionist will look them up in the appointment register, give them a badge, and then let them through. For the c-suite level, or anywhere Kaiba takes his most important/official meetings (like his own office), there might be a second lobby/second desk controlling access. .
Some important dates on Kaiba's and Mokuba's calendars, when the pressure is on and they might be working much harder than usual (for the stress and the drama): - end of quarter/EOQ (4x a year) - end of fiscal year/EOFY. may not be aligned with calendar year - for example, the end of fiscal year might be march 30 - quarterly earnings call (4x a year) - yearly earnings call. Kaiba himself, or someone very high up, like a c-suite exec or a VP, will lead these calls - for things like duel disks, the months leading up to the holiday retail season (when they're preparing for greater demand on consumer product goods) and the holiday retail season itself - for things like Kaiba Land, the summer vacation season, but largely dependent on where their parks ARE (southern california when the weather is nice year-round? tokyo when you have colder weather in the winter and slightly lower attendance? etc.) .
VERY IMPORTANT: Kaiba has an office minifridge. imagine whatever you want in here. his executive assistants or office managers will keep this well-stocked. .
Kaiba, or Mokuba, might lead the quarterly "all-hands meeting" - which is an internal meeting for all employees. for a place like kaibacorp, which KT said has ~2,000 employees, this might be held in a large hall/auditorium. things that might happen at the all-hands meeting: hiring updates (we hired 300 new people in the EMEA region), new mission statements, reiteration of core company values, sharing the company's progress on various OKRs/objectives & key results or key targets (duel disk 2.0 released this year to great acclaim and we made 34.5 billion dollars! suck it nintendo!), public (and potentially anonymous) question-and-answer session at the end, where Kaiba or Mokuba might field employee questions. .
Kaiba or Mokuba might also be responsible for a weekly or monthly all-staff email keeping the entire company apprised of announcements, new partnerships, new business ventures, progress on whatever, new investments, etc. again, someone else (like a marketing manager) might write this for them and send it over for their review/adjustments, but the email officially comes from them. i personally like to imagine Kaiba writes some absolutely bonkers staff emails
#intern memo#this is not to say 'YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG' but instead 'if you want kaibacorp to feel real and accurate this may help'#enjoy. i welcome any additions or polite and friendly corrections

Who’s your County Executive? and other steps to becoming a valuable pain in the ass
I fired off a tweet thread this morning, but I feel like a lot of folks here might benefit from this info, too. Which is: if you want anything to change, from police abolition to getting statues removed to passing local ordinances requiring masks to removing local legislation putting limits on abortion (just for some random examples), you need to get real familiar with your local reps. As in, you need to know who they are, what they do, how they’re elected/appointed, how long they’ve been doing that job, what their history is and how you can pressure them into doing what you want. Using hashtags and sharing links and signal boosting can only do so much. Talking to the people who are actually able to implement the change you want is a huge part that I don’t think gets discussed enough; and although it requires some preliminary work, once you get into the groove it’s surprisingly easy.
First, find out where you live! Which you may think is a stupid step, but —do you live in a city? Are you sure? I live in a city, for example, but I actually live in a township/suburb of that city, not the city proper. (Fortunately due to what I suspect is some white flight-related weirdness, I can still hassle the city proper.) There are entire towns inside of some cities, like West Hollywood and Los Angeles. Double-check; you might be surprised.
Then, find out who’s in charge of said place. There are quite a few people, actually. You probably have a mayor — but they might be called a supervisor. Or you may have a city manager, or executive, or clerk, or all three, or someone else entirely, who’s actually doing the day-to-day running of the place — for instance, while Austin has a mayor, it also has a city manager, and the city manager does WAY more than the mayor does. You also have people at the county/parish level — a county executive is I think the most common term, although sometimes it’s the county clerk, who can have entirely different duties depending on the county. Whatever way it works where you live, find out. While you’re at it, find out who’s in charge of your local elections. Sometimes that’s the county clerk (actually I think it’s almost always the country clerk, but sometimes it’s the county auditor or something weird like that); sometimes they’re elected and sometimes they’re appointed. Find out. Get names, put their contact info in your phone. (More on that later.)
Then, find out who represents you on the city/town council and the county legislature, or whatever they’re called where you are. Finding out what district you’re in can sometimes be hellaciously frustrating; when in doubt, an email to the county or city council can often get you an answer if you provide your address. Also bear in mind that different places have different ways of apportioning council members; sometimes they’re all “at large,” sometimes they’re elected according to districts, sometimes it’s a combination of both. Sometimes (not often I don’t think) they’re not elected at all but appointed by someone. Find out who! And don’t leave out things like school boards and zoning boards and community college boards and anything else you happen upon that has a representative you didn’t know existed. They exist, and I guarantee they’ve got power.
Note: find out who represents you state-wide, too. Often calling the governor isn’t that effective (at least for me, calling Cuomo ain’t gonna do much; if you live in Delaware or Montana or Iowa or somewhere relatively less populous, definitely get your governor’s information), but your state reps are usually pretty eager to talk to constituents, even — and this is really important these days — ones who aren’t of the same party. I’m represented by a GOP state senator, for example, but he ended up voting for this bill that just got signed into law. Most states are bicameral (except Nebraska, heyooo), so you likely have a state senator and a state rep/assemblyman/whatever. Make sure to get info for both. (Unless you live in Nebraska, in which case tell Ernie I said hi.)
Next, find out what the court system looks like where you are. Are your state/county/district/etc judges appointed? Elected? What are their terms? Who’s your District Attorney? Who’s in charge of your Public Defender’s office? (I actually haven’t bothered to look up that myself until today!) What courts handle which offenses in your area? Collect that information.
And what do you do with this info? You put it into your phone contacts, or whatever you use to keep your contacts organized, I dunno, maybe you still use your Wizard from 1992. No judgement. However you do it, put all of these contacts somewhere they’re all together — for example, if you have a letter in your directory that isn’t used much. I have a kind of weird method of organizing my contacts, which is that I put their first and last names (and their handles, if I know them online) in the Firstname field, then the Lastname field I use to say how I know them. So all of my New York-based friends are listed as “NYC, Holly Golightly/moonrivergoddess” or whatever. So for me personally, I just put all my political contacts under “Y” as in “Y do I have to keep pestering you to make you do the right thing.” So a county clerk would be listed like so:
Y, County Clerk Horace Vandergelder
In the “Company” field, I usually put their party and when/if they’re up for election next as well as term length, so Horace would be “Dem, 2020/2024.″ And then I might add any links I thought were helpful as well as notes about, say, what staffer I may’ve talked to or if there’s an important bill coming up etc.
And now you’ve got that information, it’s time to fuckin’ use it. Was there a protest that happened in your area that ended in arrests or violence? Call your mayor, register your displeasure. Call your DA, ask if anyone’s being charged. Call your city council member, ask them what legislation they’d support to end police violence. What do you know that you want them to know? Alternatively, was there a protest in your area that was really great and positive? Call these people; ask if they attended. If they did, offer support for them and say that you want them to follow up with actionable steps. If they didn’t, ask why. (BTW, it’s election season — look at the candidates, too! That state senator I mentioned earlier is retiring this year, and a pretty awesome Democrat is in a good position to get his seat; I’ve started volunteering for him in part because he’s got a history of agitating for police reform and has been regularly attending the protests here.) You can email, too; you’re welcome to c&p form emails, but once you have all these people’s contact info at your fingertips you’d be amazed how easy it’ll be to write something from you, that will be far more effective.
It’s also important to keep a record for yourself of who you’ve talked to, when you talked to them, what they said, if you want to follow up etc. I’ve got a little section of my planner for this; it has dates, names, topics, the works. It’s been really helpful to me over the past few weeks making sure I’m exerting pressure to a variety of people in a variety of positions, not just repeatedly calling one office and leaving the same message over and over again.
But if you really want to, as I put it on twitter, tighten the sphincter of local government, nothing beats face-to-face (or, these days, facetime-to-facetime). And here you’ve got a shitton of options. You can see if a particular politician/government office is taking virtual one-on-one meetings, where you can lobby either your politician or (more likely) one of their staffers to support legislation or policies or whatnot. This is, and I cannot stress it enough, HUGELY EFFECTIVE, especially if you are a demo they don’t often see (aka if you’re not a white Boomer). Local politicians are both desperate for and terrified of an engaged constituency; they want you to care but they’re very much aware that anyone showing up to an office (or a zoom meeting) could make their lives very, very difficult.
If one-on-one isn’t your style, there are also committee meetings, which... holy shit, you would not believe the number of committees there are. Committees for art festivals, committees for transportation, committees for public safety, committees for pretty much everything you can think of and a few I’ll bet you can’t. Noodle around on your councils’ and county’s websites, including their facebook page (nine times out of ten there will be more — and more up-to-date — info on the facebook page) to find out what committees meet when. And here is where your specific priorities will be important, because usually you can attend and in some cases even become part of these committees. Do you want to advocate for better public transportation? Find out when the transportation committee meets. Go to that meeting. If they have a Q&A, get some fuckin’ Qs ready and demand some fuckin’ As.
And then there’s the big kahunas of council meetings and state legislature sessions. Most city/town councils have a segment of their weekly/monthly meetings to hear from the public (this is different from a public hearing, FYI, although they too are really important and you should find out if there are any going on where you live and when). Do you have something you want to get in front of the whole council? Get your ass on the list! In Austin I think you had to call or email the council’s office by the day before; in my town you just roll up and get in line when it comes time. Then for state legislatures, often there will be specific bills on which they ask for “citizen input” or however else they describe it. This is less practical because we don’t all live in easy distance of our state capital, but if you do, consider getting involved there. (And right now with the pandemic, your state legislatures may have new rules about citizen participation that actually make it easier for you to get involved, for once.)
Mostly, though, this is about local involvement — find out who’s in control of your city, your county, your precinct and district and all the other ways your home is demarcated. Talk to these people, even if it makes you nervous; their power to make effective change comes with their responsibility to listen, and your power to make them listen comes with your responsibility to speak.
#you want your city to follow in camden and minneapolis's footsteps?#then CALL THEM UP#protesting sometimes works#advocating sometimes works#if you are only doing one of them that's fine#but doing both is more effective#and if what you want is change then you will want to be at your most effective#ergo this post#politics!
