On the Grand Trunk

Here’s an eastbound train on the former Grand Trunk Railway, now Canadian National. The location is at Knight Street, east of Marcellus, Michigan, at milepost 138 (from Chicago). The second locomotive is interesting: a BC Rail GE C44-9WL, which is nearly 28 years old now. There was a DPU of the CN in this train as well.

As a heavy snowstorm sweeps it's way across the Colorado Rockies, Southern Pacific C44-9Ws No. 8182, 8193, and 8123 are traveling along the Tennessee Pass line with a westbound manifest to Los Angeles, California.

i feel torn about saving sketches made from drawpile's dry brush. jxl is obviously the smallest for the quality i want, but jxl probably won't ever be supported in a bundle format. Like I have no idea how to do that. and avif will probably have pdf support some day. big tech will move us to avif if we want small storage. not necessarily a bad thing. and djvu as it is can be converted into bundles and viewed in okular and mobile viewers and ereaders (such as Lux Pocketbook 4). and i love djvu as it's the pretty dainty legacy format. but it's about three times the size. the full 2000x2000 page this was cut from was 115kb avif, 90.9 kb jxl, and 258kb djvu

A special passenger excursion from Brooks Ave Yard to Mt Morris carried railroad personnel to mark the occasion.

This is an analysis of the chess game between Dan Avidan and Arin Hanson that was posted to the Game Grumps YouTube channel on April 13, 2021.  This analysis is by a very amateur chess player and probably contains more information than would normally appear.

According to the chess engine Stockfish, this is where Hanson loses the white pieces’ natural advantage.  He does not regain the advantage for the rest of the game.

Avidan is setting up to capture Hanson’s knight on c3 on the next move, forking the white king and rook. He could have played 7… Bxb4, but that would have pointlessly put his bishop under attack by Hanson’s pawn on a3.  Hanson also laments that if he plays 8. Nxd4, then Avidan would absolutely capture the knight with either his own knight or his pawn.

The only thing this move does for Hanson is threaten Avidan’s knight on c6, completely ignoring the mini-drama going on with the black bishop and white knights.

Avidan does indeed take Hanson’s knight and fork his king and rook.  A better move for Hanson would have been 8. Na4, which would have protected c3 without placing the white knight in the path of black’s other bishop.

A brief distraction from Avidan’s dog does not keep him from noticing that his bishop is under attack from Hanson’s queen.  This should be expected, as Avidan was the Mr. Hardbody Chess Champion in 1987, earning him the nickname “Mr. Chess.” [citation needed]

Avidan threatens Hanson’s queen.  If Hanson takes the bait and captures the offending rook, he’ll lose his queen to Avidan’s queen.

This is the best move for this situation.  White’s queen had been threatening the black bishop on f2, but now, if it follows through, it gets captured by black’s knight, which also forks white’s king and remaining rook.

According to Stockfish, this move by Hanson more than doubles Avidan’s advantage.
