Jack Info Compilation part 14: Port Fest (pt1)

The drama of Port Fest is instigated by Jack trying to take Ruggie out to lunch to thank him for watering his cactus while he was away at a Track Club training camp.

When the restaurant is closed Ruggie is more than willing to accept a free lunch from elsewhere, but Jack insists that no where else will do.

Ruggie gets an idea after talking with the restaurant’s manager and Jack goes back to the school alone without any lunch at all.

Ruggie’s idea is revealed to be getting NRC to collaborate with an upcoming festival. The only two 3rd-year students in their group, Cater and Idia, both refuse the offer to become the group’s leader.

To try and “get the competitive juices flowing” Jack declares that they will both have to fight him for the right to lead the group (“I’m not workin’ for some half-hearted, indecisive punk. Whoever beats me is our leader.”), despite how neither one was interested in leading in the first place.

Idia observes, “That makes zero sense. You’re definitely a Savanaclaw.”

Crowley announces a committee to serve as point-of-contact with festival organizers, consisting of Jack, Ruggie, Floyd and Rook, with Jack as the team leader.

They then learn that they have been volunteered to play instruments in the event’s grand finale, despite how—of the four—Floyd is the only one with any musical experience.

Jack chooses to try the flute (“I’ve got solid lung capacity”), to no success. He insists that they all practice until they succeed: “That’s how everything works. Practice hard, and someday you’ll be able to do it!”

Jack asks Floyd to teach him to play the flute and, while Floyd initially agrees, he leaves Jack alone as soon as he gets bored, leaving Jack to practice by himself all through the night.

Jack insists that the group practice together and gets into an argument with Ruggie, who thinks they should give up entirely and get actual musicians to take their places.

Jack insists that they should do it even if they are doomed to fail because the Headmage assigned the task to them specifically. Ruggie calls Jack pigheaded, Jack calls Ruggie stubborn and Ruggie reacts with surprise (“Never thought I’d hear you talk to me like that.”)

Jack insists that, “I respect you a ton, but this is different.”

Ruggie summarily drops out until Jack is able to prove that he can succeed through the power of hard work, as he claims, and Jack declares he will be going on stage even if he has to go alone: “I’ll get better if I practice, that’s how everything works…it’s not my style to team up with people who shirk practice."

Disappearance of Jay Slater

On the morning of 17 June 2024, 19-year-old Jay Slater from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire disappeared on the island of Tenerife, Spain after attempting to walk eleven hours back to his accommodation as a result of missing a bus. Slater had attended a music festival in south Tenerife with two friends the day before his disappearance.

Slater attended the three-day NRG Music Festival in south Tenerife on the afternoon of 16 June 2024. After the festival, Slater went to the mountain village of Masca with two men he met at the festival.

On 17 June, at around 08:00, Ofelia Medina Hernandez - the last known person in contact with Slater - told him that his bus was due at 10:00. Hernandez recalled driving past Slater as he "walked fast".

Fifty minutes later, at 08:50, Slater called his friend Lucy Mae Law to tell her that he was "lost", as he walked from Masca to where he was staying in Los Cristianos on the south coast of Tenerife. Slater said that his phone had 1% battery and that he needed water. His last known location is the Rural de Teno National Park. At 09:04, Slater was reported missing.

As concerns grow for his welfare, questions have begun to emerge as to how the apprentice bricklayer has seemingly vanished in an area inundated with tourists.

In his last Snapchat post at 7.30am, Mr Slater tagged Parque Rural de Teno Buenavista del Norte, an area to the north of the island, known for its rugged and sparse terrain.

He is believed to have travelled to the area during the early hours of Monday morning with two new acquaintances, without realising the distance from his apartment in the tourist area of Los Cristianos. Around an hour later, he phoned his friend Lucy to tell her he had missed his bus, and was planning to make the 11-hour walk. He told her he had cut his leg on a cactus, was unsure of his location and had barely any phone battery to use a maps app to make his way back. Search teams are currently scouring the area, with police deploying helicopters, drones and sniffer dogs to help with the search.

Despite being pointed towards a bus stop, Mr Slater decided against waiting another two hours for a bus to take him into town. Given that there is a main road nearby, questions have been raised as to why Mr Slater appears to have wandered into the wilderness. His friend Ms Law said: “What I don’t understand is if he did walk down then why wasn’t he seen by anyone? “It’s a busy time of day, the place is full of hikers and holidaymakers, he could have asked them for help or stopped somewhere but no one has seen him at all.”

After meeting two men, who have been described as British, during the festival, Mr Slater decided to return to their AirBnb while his friends went home. Little is known about them, and they have since flown back to the UK after being questioned briefly by Spanish police.

Slater's friend Lucy started a GoFundMe page to support his friends and family who had travelled to Tenerife while the search continued. Slater's mother, Debbie Duncan, said that she did not want any fundraising pages to be made and has urged people not to donate to any.

beck is Very quiet and withdrawn, and generally comes across as very. standoffish. unapproachable. but that's mostly because he is constantly in hell and exhausted because of the ghosts tormenting him most of the time. of course the average person wouldnt just Immediately know that about him. they just assume he'd be an asshole.

and in a way he Is sometimes, not intentionally. he's just very direct and short with people on account of lacking energy to put any more effort in. and he wants to be able to so bad!!! he wants to befriend people!!! but he cannnnn't and he is all too painfully aware of it.

a Lot of his days are lazy days, and they mostly involve reading, or doodling in a notebook, sometimes attempting to make a bit of music if he's feeling up for it,,, sometimes even that is too much so he'll just lie there with his eyes closed listening to music and daydreaming. he has got Very good at that lately, and it passes the time pretty effectively for him. he would love to be able to just sit and hang out in the sun for a while one day...

he LOVES music festivals and concerts so much he is a little freak when it comes to music, especially when it's Live. he used to go to as many local concerts as he possibly could before things got Bad bad for him, and he wants to do that again one day... maybe even perform in one, if he ever got the chance.

his favourite part of live performances is always the interaction with the crowd, and getting everyone involved to make the songs sound even better than you couldve ever imagined,,, live music does something to him and thats the exact feeling and moment he wants to be able to experience forever

not as much as he used to be. when he was younger he used to make little clay charms, and embroidery patches, but that soon became a little too difficult for him. now he's a little more focused on music and doodling on whatever paper he can find, just to keep him in practice

my theme for the moodboards is put the state and state flower, some fun facts and the aesthetics some of them are made before i came with the theme

Montana- there are more cattle in Montana then ppl, there's a huge population of golden eagles in Montana and the white pelicans migrate from the Gulf of Mexico to Medicine Lake, Montana every spring and i got to use dreamcore and grey academia

Oregon- Oregon is home to the most ghost towns in the nation, Oregon is the only state with an official state nut, and Mushroom hunting is popular in Oregon that there's a festival called the Estacada Festival of the Fungus and the aesthetics i used Rollerwave, and 90s indie

Utah- I couldn't not ref the musical and his first appearance outfit, apparently Utah has also seen some ufo sightings and Utah is the ultimate rubber chicken manufacturer with some angelcore and refs to his wife and kids

Washington- made before the theme but i used a color ppl haven't heard of it's called xanadu

Hawaii- tropical aesthetic, the rainbow one is there to ref Hawaii's license plate, the Las Vegas sign is there bc Hawaiians love it here in my state :>, and the surf boards are there bc Hawaii invented surfing

Colorado- there was a gold rush in Colorado 10 years after cali, there was a silver boom in Colorado too for the sliver neckless, the rainbow pain is for ppl saying colorful Colorado, and the blue, white and green, and peace sign is for the colors of the flag

New Mexico- New Mexico is wine country, New Mexico has more cows than people and the state gem is Turquoise for aesthetics i used aliencore and mushroomcore and I just put the cool cactus picture there cus I thought it fit tbh

Arizona- Turquoise is the official state gemstone, music is a big deal in Arizona, and Arizona leads in copper production and the aesthetics i used are analoge horror and neoncore

Alaska- The Alaskan Malamute is one of the oldest domesticated Dog breeds in the world, Alaska has the largest forest in America, grey wolves thrive in Alaska and i only used dark academia

California- California is the birthplace of the internet, cali is the artichoke Captial, and the gold there is to ref the gold rush and i used indie kid and old webcore

cactus ⇢ something you’re currently learning (about)? I just started a new job in the office of a nonprofit that puts on folk music concerts so I've been learning a lot about how nonprofits are run and also what goes into organizing a concert festival (also finding a lot of new folk musicians that are really really good!)

mahonia ⇢ what place, thing, activity inspires you most and how do you express yourself when it does? I think the thing that really inspires me the most is reading, whether in reading books or just seeing a quote online or listening to the lyrics in a song a lot of the time if I really like a quote thats the most inspiring thing for me to start creating something based off it. I usually my first impulse is to craft or digitally create something just because I can't draw very well, but sometimes I just like saying quotes or dialogue lines out loud. Also I have this little like bubblegum machine type thing that I put pieces of paper that I've written quotes in when I really like them and sometimes if I'm bored I'll pick one out and try and make something based on that. Currently I've been going through a bit of a "humanity is actually mostly good / believe in hope" kick thematically in my quotes (which I think is a lot because i've been watching a lot of vlogbrothers videos recently), like "We held on to hope of better days coming / and when we did we were right" (-The Mountain Goats) and "I cannot do all the good the world needs, but the world needs all the good that I can do." (-Jana Stanfield). That was very long winded but basically I'm just inspired by other people's words.
