Ah, you stopped washing the porcelain plates as the next song started playing through the little radio, I know this one.
Your dreamy eyes scanned the environment until they landed on the other barista who currently had a broom in his hand and swept the floor in the sitting lounge slowly. There were some loose strains of his teal hair covering his face. They probably loosened from the little ponytail he had while cleaning the leftovers in the kitchen.
You could not help yourself but stared at him. Xiao’s usual look was so much different from what he looked like that afternoon. He wore the usual red and brown café uniform, yet two beautiful earrings with engraved waves still decorated his ears. You did not know why he found a liking to ear jewellery, but the earrings you gave him on your short Christmas Eve shift were still worn by the male up to this rainy day in the middle of spring.
You closed the water tap. Oh, how you would love to just grab Xiao’s hands and start dancing through the café together with him. You could imagine him being extremely confused at your happy gesture.
Additionally: There were two ways this could play out.
One being him getting absolutely embarrassed and not being able to face you for the next two days because of your silly temper…
Or…
Or he would actually give in.
Trying does not hurt anyone, right?
You put the little teacup you held in your hands down on the bar and made your way over to the amber eyed male. You were incredibly sure that even though your attempt at walking as quietly as possible was more than successful, the trained boy would still sense your sole presence as he always would.
He did not pay any attention to you standing behind him first and thought you were just messing around with him again, but as your two with rings covered hands laid down on the broom a few millimetres away from his own, his calm gaze looked up to meet your eyes already resting on him.
“Do you need any help?” he asked softly, almost inaudible to hear. This is a change of your colleague you have noticed as well. The first few shifts he worked in the café, he was much more harsh and reserved towards both you and every single customer, but now that he has gotten used to the café’s atmosphere, he seemed more relaxed and peaceful.
You could not lie, you did not like-, you absolutely loved that part of him.
“No,” you exclaimed as quietly as he did, as if the two of you were sharing a secret. Your hands slid down the broom until they both rested on top of Xiao’s. He did not flinch away from the touch. Secretly, he wished the warmth of your hands could stay on him for much longer. “I just really like the song.”
“Mhm. It has something,” he leaned against the wooden table behind him, listening to the song you seemed to like so much. The lovely beat of the song remaining as warm as early spring in addition to the light drizzle hitting the large windows was enough for a short moment of inner peace. Adding your pleasant touch on his skin, it was a cure to any burden he had to carry.
Suddenly you interlocked your fingers with Xiao’s, yanking him to his feet fully out of nowhere. Confusion plastered the boy’s face as you started to sway with him from side to side slowly. “What are you doing?”
You hummed the tune of the song under your breath as a soft smile appeared on your lips. “Dance with me.”
You were right, the situation did indeed leave Xiao speechless. He had unquestionably never experienced a situation like… this.
A faint shade of pink plastered Xiao’s cheeks almost instantly, but you did not point it out and lead him in the middle of the café instead, the broom he held dropping to the floor in the process.
I’ve got a love for you…
“I… have never danced before…” Xiao looked down at you nervously, afraid to ruin the moment, but you only put an index finger on top of his reddish lips.
I just can’t escape…
“Did you not mention that you would love to experience the feelings of a dancing person one day?” you whispered and Xiao could feel heat rushing to his cheeks again, considering you remembered him opening up to you about his desires earlier. You only chuckled.
You leaned your head on his shoulder whispering the next part into Xiao’s ear, your smile only growing at the heat radiating from his face.
“Don’t worry,”
All of my love for you…
“Even though the scenery is far from perfect,”
Cuts me like barbed wire…
“I would gladly be your dance partner.”
“What do you-” without further hesitation, you pushed your body against the boy putting one of your hands on his shoulder while the other interlocked fingers with Xiao’s. Even though it happened in mere seconds, to Xiao the moment passed in slow motion.
Oh, I was meant to love you and always keep you in my life…
You rested your cheek against his own while slowly moving around the café, your laughter echoing through the empty halls like an additional source of music. You just moved to the rhythm of the song carefully, pulling Xiao along with you and that alone was enough to leave Xiao completely speechless.
It has been a while since Xiao saw you so happy again. Especially in the late winter months you used to be much more worn out, lacking enough sleep and walking around with red and puffy eyes regularly. You seemed so strong when he first started working at the café, giving every customer a bright smile while serving their corresponding drinks, yet your heart was very sensitive to every single negative word they used to say.
It was as if your heart was made out of glass and your mind of stone.
But now in this very moment? You were the happiest you have ever been. Xiao could feel your heartening energy in the air, as it soothed his senses like it always did. Your sole presence was enough to make Xiao feel less tense and even a bit more… relaxed? Was this the right word to describe the feeling deep in his chest?
Xiao’s shoulders relaxed and to his own surprise, he felt the corners of his lips curve up in a lovely smile.
Of course it did not go unnoticed by his dance partner.
“Aww! Is that a smil- ahahah!” you stopped moving for a moment to examine the amber eyed male’s smile further, yet in the exact same moment he put his two hands on your waist and raised you up carefully, making a little spin motion. You wrapped your arms around Xiao’s neck to stabilise yourself even further, almost pressing your forehead against his own as you hung in the air calmly. You looked down into Xiao’s golden, shining eyes, your gaze softening even further at the feeling of the boy’s slow breath on your skin. When Xiao softly set your feet back on the ground again, you still had your arms wrapped around him, your fingers massaging the back of his neck gently. Another laugh left your mouth. “Do that again! Please, please, please…”
“And what will I get for it in return?” Xiao slowly removed his hands from your waist in a teasing manner, making you let out a small pout.
The rain hitting the café’s large windows slowed down, only strumming an almost inaudible melody against the glass. You looked around the café, searching for something you could offer Xiao in return for another one of those spins. Your eyes landed on the white piano placed against a nearby wall and the first thought flooding your mind, was to play that one piece Xiao seemed to adore. The one you have written.
You looked down to your waist and reached down to lean Xiao’s soothing hands against it once again, your lips forming into a smile.
“Then…”
I was meant to love you…
“I would tell you I love you.”
