the warmth of al haitham’s large arms around your body is comforting as your question fades into the darkness of the night. “pardon?”

covers rustle as you shift in his hold. “you’re a scribe for the akademiya, and i sell oranges down at port ormos for a living.” your attention drifts to his exposed chest and your fingers start tracing shapes along his stomach of their own accord. “we aren’t particularly suited for each other.”

“who said that?” just by the shift in his tone, you can tell that he doesn’t appreciate your self depreciation. “you know how i am ; i don’t waste time on things that aren’t important to me.”

“i understand that,” you start, looking up into his turquoise irises. the beautiful night sky is reflected in his eyes, and you’re taken aback by their sheer beauty. “don’t you think - as a scribe - that there are things more important than love?”

“if there was something more important to me than my love for you, then we wouldn’t be here in this very moment.” al haitham is plain yet concise in what he says. he’s always been that way, even when you met him for the first time all those years ago. “doesn’t that show how important you are to me?”

when he admits it, his voice drops in volume. the truth is, you are more important to him than anything the world could possibly offer. sure, you get in the way of his work sometimes, and if it were anyone else, he’d dispose of them effectively ; but with you, it’s different. it always has been.

“i love you,” he says into your hair as he strokes your back. “i love you, so much more than you know.”

“i love you too,” you whisper back, eyes slowly closing as you find home in the arms of your lover.

GINGER TEA : meeting the family

a/n : toji meeting your family literally has me on the floor laughing and crying simultaneously

toji would completely be up for meeting your parents, despite the numerous amount of times you try to discourage him. you know your parents better than anyone, and you already know they won’t particularly approve of your relationship with toji, what with him already having a son from another marriage.

when the day of meeting your parents finally comes and all attempts of stopping the meeting has proved futile, you notice that toji is taking more care in his appearance, donning a white button up shirt and trousers as opposed to his usual dark t-shirt and grey joggers. his hair has been brushed and is slicked back in a tidy style instead of hanging in his face and it makes him look a lot less menacing.

much to your disgruntlement, your overbearing mother answers the door, and before you can even get over the threshold, she’s bombarding the both of you with questions.

“how did you meet my daughter? do you have any kids? what are your intentions after you get married?”

“okay, why don’t we calm down,” you say, jumping in before either your mother or toji can say anything. “let’s go to the kitchen. toji, i think my dad is in the lounge so go and introduce yourself.” he picks up on your worried tone and leaves immediately.

when you get to the kitchen, out of toji’s earshot, your mother doesn’t hesitate to state her opinion on your fiancé.

“i don’t like him,” she says bluntly whilst chopping carrots. “he’ll marry you, put a baby in you and then leave. that’s what guys like him do.”

and for a whole hour, you put up with your mother telling you what a genuine man looks like (she describes your father), and why toji isn’t exactly what she had in mind when you told her you were planning to get married.

just as she starts on what she had expected from you, toji walks into the kitchen … along with your father who, surprisingly, has a smile on his face.

“i was just telling toji here about that plushie collection you used to have when you were 15,” he says, slapping a hand on his shoulder. “you used to go crazy if we touched them, remember?”

your cheeks heat up at the smile toji gives you. “you’re gonna have to show them to me,” he says slyly, pressing a kiss on your forehead. you can feel your mother staring holes into your back. “do you ladies need any help in here?”

“not that i know of-”

“dishes need washing,” you mother snaps, pointing to the sink. “do the big bowl first, i need it for the potato salad.”

it’s your turn to stare as toji immediately walks to the sink, rolls up his sleeves and starts washing, doing the big bowl first as instructed. he finishes in record time, and when he’s done, he even cleans down the sink.

later, at dinner, your mother makes a conscious effort to make conversation with toji, asking him more placid questions, like what he does in his spare time or his favourite food so that next time, she can make it for him.

at the end of the visit, your mother sees the both of you out with a large container of potato salad and a bottle of wine. “drive safely!”

“we will,” toji calls back before turning to you. “i think she likes me,” he says, climbing into the car.

you smile to yourself when you catch her waving at you from the door. “i think so too.”
