My Husband kidnapped me because he got out of work early today, and then forced me to go to Lowe's with him so I could look at plants and get happy chemicals ... I wound up walking out with $100 worth of goods because I am uncontrolable.
In seed packets, I got:
'Summer Dreams' Cosmos
True Lavender
'Pacific Beauty' Calendula
'Crackerjack' African Marigold
Carrot Colorful Mix
Summer Thyme
Tiger's Eye Mix Sunflowers (my Husband's requested these over the usual Sunflowers this year)
'Long Red' Cayenne Pepper
Sweet Alyssum
And then in dry roots, I got:
'Pink Flamingo' Strawberry
'California' Garlic
Yellow Shallot
'Adirondack Blue' Potato
My Husband's also forcing me to rebuy all my Birthday Lilies as we find them available for sale. So I bought a giant, fancy "Frost Resistant" pot on clearance for like $30 for it (the only way I'll feel comfortable trying again). And then we did manage to actually find two of the original Lilies:
'Stargazer' Oriental
'Landini' Oriental
Then I also bought a 'Cherub's Smile' Bearded Iris because it's just such a pretty pink. But I paid literally $6 for one root and I'm kind of mad about it; if this thing doesn't sprout, I'm definitely going to cry something fierce.
Even got to have a sweet checkout exchange with a random old lady. She showed me photos of her Roses and some of her other flowers while we waited on a family in front of us who had a trillion items. And it was just ... Nice; there was no expectation to be anything other than strangers about it in the end.
It all did help emotionally, though. A little bit at least. So that's nice.

1. Northeastern Treasures:
Our journey begins on the East Coast, where the lush forests and meadows of the Northeastern United States come alive with a stunning array of wildflowers. In the spring, keep an eye out for the delicate Trillium and the vibrant Virginia Bluebell. As summer approaches, the New England Aster and the Wild Columbine paint the landscape with their vivid colors.
2. The Midwest's Floral Symphony:
Moving westward to the heart of America, the Midwest is home to some captivating wildflowers. The iconic Purple Coneflower, also known as Echinacea, is a true symbol of this region. Don't miss the cheerful Black-eyed Susan and the elegant Prairie Smoke as they bloom across the rolling plains.
3. Wildflowers of the Great Plains:
Venturing further west into the Great Plains, you'll be treated to a unique display of wildflowers adapted to this harsh environment. Look for the bright orange Butterfly Weed and the Plains Coreopsis. These hardy blooms thrive in the open spaces of America's heartland.
4. Mountain Majesty:
As we head toward the Rocky Mountains and the Southwest, you'll encounter wildflowers that have adapted to high altitudes and arid conditions. The Rocky Mountain Columbine, with its striking blue and white petals, is a must-see. The Desert Marigold adds a splash of yellow to the arid landscapes of the Southwest.
5. Pacific Coast Paradise:
Finally, our journey concludes on the stunning Pacific Coast. Here, you'll find the iconic California Poppy, which blankets fields with a vibrant orange hue in the spring. Explore the lush meadows of the Pacific Northwest to discover the enchanting Tiger Lily and the Western Trillium.

What is your favorite flower?
Tiger lilies and orange hawkweed (which we always called Indian paint brushes) were my first favorites. California poppies kind of satisfy that craving for a flower that looks like fire, too. I love the lush verbosity of a peony. Some dahlias, but not others. I think magnolias might be my top fave though.

From Oakland Zoo: “Last month, Oakland Zoo and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife rescued an eight-month-old female tiger from private ownership. After performing an exam, CT scan, and bloodwork we found that Lily had ten pathological fractures, muscle atrophy in her legs, and a metabolic bone disease. These injuries happened during a critical period in her development and have prevented her from performing instinctual behaviors like running and climbing. Over the last few weeks, our team has provided Lily with specialized care and enrichment catering to her unique needs so she can regain her strength and mobility. As she continues to improve, we remain optimistic that she will make a near-full recovery under our care.”

When You Trap a Tiger by Tae Keller
Tumblr media
When You Trap a Tiger by Tae Keller follows a young girl named Lily who is moving from California with her mom and older sister, Sam, to live with her ailing halmoni. Lily’s grandmother always warned her to never make a deal with a tiger. However, when Halmoni becomes sick, a magical tiger makes Lily an offer: find the stories that Halmoni stole years ago, or lose her forever. She must learn to be brave, face the scary stories head-on, and shake the Quiet Asian Girl stereotype that she’s always felt she’s represented. Along the way, Lily learns important family history, makes friends, and finds out that she’s capable of more than she initially believed.
This book was my choice for the Newbery Medal. I picked this one because it has Korean folktale elements. I have become interested in Korean culture in the past couple of years, but I have never looked into any of their folktales, so I thought this book would be the perfect introduction for that. Also, when I’ve looked at lists of quality children’s or middle grade fantasy, this title is always included.
Something that I really loved about this book was the growth of the main character, Lily. The reader watches her (or in my case, listens to her) grow into a stronger, more confident person as she navigates through the various conflicts throughout the story. There are moments where she learns to face fears and stand up for herself. She also learns how to repair relationships that she felt were strained, like the one with her older sister. The story takes place the summer before Lily begins middle school, and it’s cool to see her gain maturity and insight before she embarks on a new chapter of her life.
Another great aspect of this book is the Korean folklore and culture elements. Before listening to the audiobook, I was not familiar with any of the stories. I loved the way Keller wrote them, they sounded whimsical and other-worldly. It was fun to pick out the parallels between the folklore stories and the plot of the novel. Descriptions of Korean food were also presented in a way that made me crave kimchi whenever the characters were eating it in the story.
While I thought Lily and her halmoni were very strong and loveable characters, I also felt that the background characters fell a little flat. Sam, the older sister, seemed like any other moody teenager that was unhappy because of uncontrollable change. The mother was constantly busy because of the move and taking care of her sick mother. The new friend Lily made, Ricky, felt like a character who was only present for comic relief or to move important plot points along. I still enjoyed these characters, but I think they could’ve had a little more personality.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story. I think it’s perfect for any kid in the middle grade age range, especially ones who enjoy different cultures and fantasy. Keller’s writing is descriptive and easy to read. The growth of Lily throughout the story will make the reader feel proud and may even inspire them to tackle some of their own fears. I give this book four out of five stars.

“Your hands are quite rough for what ought to be gentle work.”
“Gentle? You’ve never had to cut long stem roses before, have you?”
“Can’t say that I have.”
Just something I threw together for my AoKuro Florist/Tattoo Artist AU Bring Me Roses that ended up taking a lot longer than expected, and revealed a part of me that kind of just...wants to design tattoos for a living? Or maybe just draw flowers all the time, it’s painstaking but weirdly calming for me.

hello again !!!! i hope u dont mind me sending asks here and there ;;
uh my question is what the characters favorite flower are !! i know youve made a post about flowers theyd give but im really curious about what they like ^^ thank you !!
It's all good, happy to answer!
Leo: He probably hasn’t thought about it too much, but if asked, he’d probably say roses because of his last name (Roselund). If you were to give him flowers, he’d like any variety of sunflower because he likes sunny weather. Sunflowers are also considered to be the happiest flower, like a pocket full of sunshine.
Rory: He likes a lot of different flowers, particularly native ones he could grow in a garden. But, he also likes anything that’s dark and dramatic. He’d like if you gave him a bouquet of tulip continentals, or a hanging basket of petunia black velvet. He also likes moonflowers – very poisonous, blooms at night. He’s definitely thought about having one of those poisonous plant gardens.
Alexei: He’d be interested in many different flowers and probably wouldn’t be able to choose just one. He also knows their latin names. Some flowers that interest him are the night blooming cereus (blooms once a year), lotus (interesting life cycle), and bird of paradise (looks like a bird). Giving him flowers, he’d like anything that’s a little more delicate with softer colors that’s peaceful to look at – snow-in-summer, lilacs, daisies, queen anne’s lace etc. He also likes ornamental onions.
Milo: He would actually kind of like it if you got him flowers of any kind. His grandpa had a lot of random larkspur growing on his property, so if you planted those, it would remind him of his grandfather.
Tobias: He’s not really interested in flowers and wouldn’t have an answer if you asked what his favorite was, but he’d be totally charmed if you got him orange ones -zinnia, california poppies, gerba daisies. But tiger lilies in particular, and he’d be particularly amused by hot red pokers by the name alone, or if you got him foxgloves. He also thinks desert flowers are cool.
Brooklyn: This man loves flowers. His backyard is like a botanical garden. Some favorites include classics like hydrangeas, english roses, dinner plate dahlias, wisteria, anemone, and hollyhocks. Get him literally any flower and he will be VERY PLEASED. If you really wanted to go over the top, make him a boutonniere he could wear to work and he’d lose his mind. Alternatively, you could give him a fern.
