During Glasgow CanalFestival last July, CanalCraft boat builders took the boats to the Speirs Wharf and put one in the water.

Visitors had the opportunity to get on the boat and gently float on the canal, without worrying to be drifted away. This activity gave the opportunity to the boat builders to demonstrate to visitors to the canal their work and how a small boat can connect people with their heritage.

Being on water is a daunting experience for some people and preconceptions of inland and urban waterways being ‘dirty’, ‘dangerous’ and an area of criminal activity all contribute to make the canal inaccessible. However, through the traditional skill of boat building and the use of the boats community groups have created in public events, these preconceptions could be challenged.

The festival was an enriched experience for all involved and it proved that by being directly involved with an activity, a wider range of community groups could be included in a succesful public event and give them a sense of belonging and ownership of their heritage.

Let’s hope for more boats for the canal in the future!
