Capturing the Perfect Beach Photoshoot at Your Dream Location in Miami
Tumblr media
Miami is a photographer’s paradise, with its breathtaking beaches, vibrant culture, and year-round sunshine. Whether you're a seasoned professional or an aspiring shutterbug, capturing the perfect beach photoshoot in Miami is an experience like no other. From the soft golden sands to the turquoise waters, every element works together to create stunning visuals. But to truly capture the magic of Miami’s beaches, you need more than just a camera. You need the right location, timing, and techniques. Here's how to capture the perfect beach photoshoot at your dream location in Miami.
1. Choosing the Perfect Location
Miami is home to a variety of beach locations, each with its unique charm and character. Selecting the right beach for your photoshoot is crucial to achieving the desired aesthetic.
South Beach: Known for its iconic Art Deco architecture and vibrant atmosphere, South Beach is perfect for those seeking a lively and colorful backdrop. The wide sandy shores and the lively Ocean Drive add a dynamic element to your photos.
Crandon Park Beach: Located on Key Biscayne, this beach offers a more tranquil setting with lush greenery and calm waters. The palm-lined shore and beautiful sunsets make it an ideal location for romantic or serene portraits.
Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park: Also on Key Biscayne, this park features a historic lighthouse, giving your photos a touch of Miami’s history. The secluded beach and the lush surroundings provide a perfect escape from the bustling city.
Matheson Hammock Park: If you’re looking for a more natural and rustic setting, Matheson Hammock Park offers a picturesque backdrop with its lagoon-like beach, mangroves, and coral rock formations. This location is perfect for capturing nature-inspired photos.
2. Timing Your Photoshoot
The time of day plays a significant role in beach photography. The natural lighting changes dramatically throughout the day, and choosing the right time can elevate your photos.
Golden Hour: The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset are known as the golden hour. During this time, the sun is low in the sky, casting a soft, warm glow that enhances skin tones and adds a magical quality to your photos. This is the best time for capturing romantic and dreamy images.
Blue Hour: The blue hour occurs just before sunrise and just after sunset, when the sky takes on a deep blue hue. This is perfect for capturing moody and dramatic shots, especially if you want to highlight the contrast between the sky and the ocean.
Midday: While midday can be challenging due to harsh shadows and bright light, it can work well if you’re looking to capture vibrant and energetic photos. The bright sunlight can make the colors of the ocean and sky pop, but be sure to use reflectors or diffusers to soften the light on your subjects.
3. Mastering Lighting Techniques
Lighting is key to any successful photoshoot, and beach photography presents its own set of challenges. The open space and reflective surfaces can make it difficult to control the light, but with the right techniques, you can create stunning images.
Use Reflectors: Reflectors are essential for bouncing light onto your subject and filling in shadows. Silver reflectors work well for adding contrast, while gold reflectors can enhance the warm tones of the golden hour.
Consider Off-Camera Flash: An off-camera flash can help you control the lighting in a more precise way. It’s especially useful during midday when the sun is directly overhead. Use it to fill in shadows and create a balanced exposure.
Embrace Backlighting: Backlighting is a popular technique for beach photography, especially during the golden hour. Position your subject with the sun behind them to create a beautiful halo effect. You may need to slightly overexpose the image to properly light your subject’s face.
4. Incorporating Props and Wardrobe
Props and wardrobe play a vital role in enhancing the visual storytelling of your beach photoshoot. They can add layers of interest and help convey the mood you want to achieve.
Beach Accessories: Incorporate elements like beach towels, umbrellas, surfboards, or beach balls to add a playful and fun vibe to your photos. These props can also provide a pop of color and complement the natural surroundings.
Flowy Dresses and Fabrics: Clothing that moves with the breeze adds a dynamic element to your photos. Think flowy dresses, scarves, or even loose, lightweight shirts. The movement of the fabric can create a sense of freedom and fluidity.
Minimalist Approach: If you prefer a more natural and serene look, opt for simple and neutral-colored clothing. This approach allows the beauty of the beach and the natural surroundings to take center stage.
5. Posing and Composition Tips
Posing and composition are crucial for creating visually appealing photos. The right poses can enhance the subject’s natural beauty, while thoughtful composition can turn a simple photo into a work of art.
Play with Angles: Experiment with different angles to create unique perspectives. Shooting from a low angle can make the subject appear larger and more dominant, while a high angle can create a more intimate and candid feel.
Use the Rule of Thirds: The rule of thirds is a fundamental composition technique that helps create balanced and interesting photos. Imagine your frame divided into nine equal parts, and position your subject along these lines or at their intersections to create a more dynamic composition.
Incorporate Leading Lines: Leading lines are natural or man-made lines that guide the viewer’s eye toward the subject. On the beach, these could be the shoreline, waves, or even footprints in the sand. Use them to draw attention to your subject and add depth to your photos.
6. Capturing Candid Moments
Some of the best beach photos are captured in candid moments. Encourage your subjects to relax, move around, and interact with their surroundings. Whether it’s a laugh, a splash in the water, or a moment of contemplation, candid shots often convey genuine emotion and tell a more compelling story.
Movement: Encourage your subjects to walk along the shore, run through the waves, or twirl in the sand. Capturing movement adds energy and spontaneity to your photos.
Natural Interactions: Capture your subjects as they naturally interact with each other or their environment. These moments are often the most authentic and can result in heartwarming images.
7. Editing Your Beach Photos
Editing is the final step in achieving the perfect beach photoshoot. With the right editing techniques, you can enhance the colors, correct exposure, and bring out the best in your images.
Adjust Exposure and Contrast: Beaches are bright, so you might need to adjust the exposure and contrast to ensure your subject is properly lit without overexposing the background. Pay attention to the highlights and shadows to create a balanced image.
Enhance Colors: Use editing software to boost the vibrancy of the ocean and sky. Adjust the saturation and hue to bring out the blues of the water and the warm tones of the sand and sunset.
Add Filters or Presets: Applying a filter or preset can give your photos a cohesive look. For beach photography, consider using presets that enhance the warm tones and give the images a sun-kissed glow.
Crop and Straighten: Cropping and straightening can help improve composition. Ensure that the horizon line is straight, and consider cropping to remove distractions or to better align with the rule of thirds.
8. Finding Inspiration and Planning Your Shoot
Before heading to the beach, it’s essential to gather inspiration and plan your shoot. Look at other beach photography for ideas, but also consider your personal style and what you want to convey in your photos.
Mood Boards: Create a mood board with images that inspire you. This can help you visualize the look and feel you want to achieve and guide your creative direction during the shoot.
Scout the Location: Visit the beach ahead of time to scout potential spots for your photos. Look for interesting features like rocks, dunes, or piers that could add interest to your shots.
Prepare for the Weather: Check the weather forecast before your shoot. Miami’s weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for sudden changes. Cloudy skies can actually enhance your photos by diffusing the light, so don’t be discouraged if the sun isn’t shining.
Conclusion
Capturing the perfect beach photoshoot at your dream location in Miami is all about planning, creativity, and a little bit of luck. By choosing the right location, timing your shoot, mastering lighting techniques, and embracing candid moments, you can create stunning images that capture the beauty and essence of Miami’s beaches. With these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to capturing unforgettable beach photos that you and your clients will cherish for years to come. So grab your camera, head to the sand, and let Miami’s breathtaking beaches be the backdrop to your next masterpiece.

The Stay on Dinosaur Planet: Chapter 1-Shabunga’s Surprise
After successfully defeating the evil Andross for the last time, Fox and Pikachu landed back in Thorntail Hollow. Tricky: “Fox, Fox!” Fox: “Tricky?”
Fox and Pikachu watched as Tricky ran towards them in an energetic way. Tricky: “Fox, you won’t believe this: Bubbles and Misty flew in this blue fox that looked almost like you.” Fox: “They did? Where are they, Tricky?” Tricky: “Follow me.”
Fox followed Tricky into the chamber where the Queen Earthwalker was held. There they found a crowd of dinosaurs blocking their way towards Bubbles, Misty, the King and Queen Earthwalker, and Krystal. Krystal was lying on the floor. When one of the dinosaurs spotted Fox and the prince, it told the others to move out of the way for the two of them so they could move up towards the girls and the king and queen. Bubbles: “Fox, we’re so glad to see you. Poor Krystal almost didn’t make it. Luckily, we were able to receive help from the King and Queen Earthwalker.” Fox: “Great, how did it go?” Misty: “Not so good, I’m afraid the king and queen’s help just wasn’t enough. She’s still in bad shape. Those Krazoa Spirits did her in good.” Fox: “Will she be OK?” Misty: “Of course. With some rest and plenty of food, she’ll be recovered in no time.” Fox: “OK, then.” Misty: “However, until she recovers to her normal health, we’ll have to remain on Dinosaur Planet.” Fox: “For how long?” Misty: “I’d say…for a couple of days should help her.” Bubbles: “That’s longer than I thought we would stay here for.” Misty: “We should make the best of it and watch over her until she recovers.” King Earthwalker: “Nonsense, after the way you guys saved our planet, you deserve a lot more than this.” Fox: “Yeah, I know, but Misty’s right, I mean, if we’re not going to watch over her then who will?” Voice: “I will.” Fox: “Huh?”
Fox and the others watched as a Cloudrunner came out of the crowd. Cloudrunner: “I’ll stay and watch over Krystal. I’ve known her since the day she first landed on this planet.” Misty: “OK, then. While the Cloudrunner watches over Krystal, we’ll head to Cape Claw and meet the others there. We’ve received a message that they’re there, right now.” Fox: “Then let’s get going.” Misty: “All right, thanks for volunteering to watch over Krystal, noble Cloudrunner. If anything happens to her, just let us know.”
So, Fox, Misty, Bubbles and Tricky headed straight for Cape Claw.
When they arrived, they saw Princess Peach, Rayman, and Banjo. However, Kazooie was nowhere in sight. This was excellent news to Fox. After that, Fox and Misty set up their lounge chairs, took out their sunglasses and lounged on the chairs. (Adeleine painted the chairs out. Yes, Adeleine’s back and boy, was she happy to be painting for her friends again.) Later, General Pepper’s hologram popped up and congratulated Fox and his friends for saving the Lylat System again. Then Fox and Misty did something that reminded Peach of a little deal she made with the Thorntail storekeeper, Shabunga, after Fox bought the Snowhorn artifact. Therefore, she left the beach and headed straight for Thorntail Hollow.
After Peach returned, the storekeeper, Shabunga, appeared out of nowhere behind Fox and Misty’s lounge chairs. Fox: “What the…? The Thorntail storekeeper? What are you doing here?” Shabunga: “I’ve got a little surprise for you and your red-headed friend, but first, I’m going to need to take some pictures.”
Then, he grabbed the scarab he had always worn around his neck, which he used to roll out into a 3-digit #, and somehow rolled it out into a camera. Shabunga: “You, with the ears.” Fox: “Who? Me?” Shabunga: “Yes, you, I need you to stand over there.” Fox: “Um, OK.”
He got up from his lounge chair, took off his sunglasses and walked not too far from where he was. Fox: “Here?” Shabunga: “Yes, there.”
Fox folded his arms. Fox: “So now, what?” Shabunga: “Stay right there, just like that. That’s perfect.”
He then held his camera up. Shabunga: “Now, smile and say “scarab”.”
Then he snapped shot and looked at a projector on the back of the camera to see if she got what he wanted. Shabunga: “Hm, good, you may sit down, now.”
Fox returned to his lounge chair. Shabunga: “You, with the headband.” Misty:” Who? Me?” Shabunga:” Yes, you, now I need you to stand over there.” Misty: “Um, alright.”
She got up from her lounge chair, took off her sunglasses and walked to the same spot that Fox was asked to stand. As she stopped, she put one arm behind her back and grabbed on to her other arm. Misty: “Here?” Shabunga:” Yes, there, perfect, just the way I wanted it to be.”
He held up his camera again. Shabunga: “Now, smile and say “scarabs”.”
Then he snapped shot and looked at the projector on the back of the camera. Shabunga: “Yessssss, perfect, you may sit down.”
Misty returned to her lounge chair. Shabunga: “Now, then, I’ll be right back. Don’t you go anywhere, you 2.”
Then he was gone.
Fox and Misty looked at each other and then back at where Shabunga once stood, er, floated. (I forgot that Shabunga has no legs, just a tail.) Then he reappeared with two lovely lockets: one with a picture of Fox in it, the other with a picture of Misty. He brought the lockets closer to the both of them. Shabunga: “Here you go, I hope you like them.” Fox: “Wow! What a great surprise. Self-portraits! Thank you.”
Fox was about to grab the locket with his picture in it but Shabunga quickly pulled it away from him. Shabunga: “Don’t touch this; it isn’t for you.”
He held the picture of Fox in front of Misty. Shabunga: “This is for her.”
She grabbed the picture, he then held the other picture in front of Fox. Shabunga: “THIS is for you.”
Fox took the locket that Shabunga wanted him to take. Fox: “Gee, thanks but, um…” Shabunga: “What’s wrong, don’t you like it?” Fox: “Yeah, I like it but you just gave me a picture of Misty.” Misty: “Yeah, you gave me a picture of Fox. Don’t you think you have us totally mixed-up?” Shabunga: “Of course, not. I gave you 2 a picture of each other for a good reason; these portraits contain a picture of your loved ones.”
Misty became speechless but Fox was not satisfied. Fox: “Wait a minute, now you’re saying that we’re in love with each other?” Shabunga: “What? Don’t you get all nasty on me! I only gave you the lockets. I could always take yours back if you changed your mind about it.” Fox: “Who told you to give us these lockets? Princess Peach?” Shabunga: “Was that the name of that Blondie who asked me to make you these lockets?”
Fox was angry. Peach’s mind: “Darn it, I thought by giving him those lockets would help Fox realize his true feelings about Misty. I guess I underestimated him.”
Fox got up from his lounge chair and stood in front of Peach. Fox: “So, this is your next attempt; asking the storekeeper to create gifts that does all of your bragging for you, huh?” Peach: “Well, it was worth a try.” Fox: “Well, congratulations, you’ve failed.” Peach: “I …had a feeling you were going to say something like that.” Fox: “Yeah, I know. Come on, Peach, this isn’t funny.” Peach: “It’s wasn’t suppose to be funny, I’m just trying to tell you the truth. Please! You have to listen!” Fox: “I had it, Peach. You’ve changed too much since the day we couldn’t see each other anymore. First you’ve gone from caring to over protected and then from over protected to just plain ridiculous!!! Enough is enough!”
Fox turned his back on Peach and walked away. He then dropped his locket on the floor as he continued walking to the far side of the beach. Peach: “But, Fox, you must understand…” Fox: “Save it!”
Peach bowed her head in great sorrow. Shabunga: “That’s just great; I wasted my time and energy over making gifts for 2 couples who aren’t in love with each other.” Peach: “They ARE in love with each other; Fox is just too stubborn to see that.” Shabunga: “Oh, I see, well, maybe I should take back his locket since…” Peach: “No, leave it; I want him to pick it up after he gets back.”
Shabunga nodded and disappeared. Tricky: “So, what is Fox doing over there, Bubbles?” Bubbles: “Oh, Fox just wants to be alone whenever he gets angry. But, don’t worry, he’ll pull through.” Tricky: “How long is he going to stand over there?” Bubbles:” Don’t know. It depends on how angry he is. If we’re lucky, he’ll be standing there for a few hours.”
Later that night, Fox is still standing on the other side of the beach. Just after he looked back at his friends, who are sleeping, he turned around and walked back. He stopped in front of his locket that he tossed on the ground earlier to pick it up and returned to his lounge chair. He looked towards Misty and at the picture of Misty in his locket. Fox’s mind: “Can it be true?”
Then he closed his eyes for the night.

Fangs of the Living Dead (1969). Also known as: Malenka and Malenka, The Vampire’s Niece.  I’m using this period of enforced social isolation to explore the weirder corners of YouTube for long forgotten and obscure movies. (My boyfriend Pal is accompanying me only semi-willingly). In the fifties, statuesque Swedish sex goddess Anita Ekberg (1931 - 2015) reigned alongside peers Mamie Van Doren, Jayne Mansfield and Diana Dors as one of atomic-era Hollywood’s preeminent glamour queens. By the early sixties, Ekberg was triumphing in Europe, splashing in the Trevi fountain beside Marcello Mastroianni in Federico Fellini’s visionary masterpiece La Dolce Vita (1960). Something clearly went seriously awry with her career trajectory, though, because by the close of the decade Ekberg was reduced to starring in this entertainingly schlocky low-budget Spanish-Italian vampire film. (Still to come: Killer Nun in 1979!). Fangs opens in bustling cosmopolitan Rome, where voluptuous protagonist Silvia Morel (Ekberg) seemingly has it all. She’s a successful fashion model (“you’re the most beautiful model in Italy!”) and engaged to dashing surgeon Dr Piero Luciani. On top of that, Silvia’s just received some exciting news (“I want to tell you about something fantastic that’s happened to me! It’s incredible!”). Not only has she inherited a title (you may address her as “countess” now! Countess Walbrooke to be precise!) – she’s also inherited a crumbling ruined Gothic castle straight out of a Hammer horror movie, too! Wasting no time, Silvia flies to the remote unspecified mitteleuropean countryside to view the castle and meet her sinister and effete uncle, Count Walbrooke. Is the Count a 100-year old vampire? Consider the evidence stacked against him: his wardrobe of polo necks and foppish velvet suits! His heavy-handed penchant for eyebrow pencil – and that satanic goatee! Furthermore, a framed portrait of Silvia’s grandmother Malenka is displayed in the castle – and she looks exactly like her! (Albeit with dark hair). “You’re the image of her!” Count Walbrooke helpfully clarifies just in case we missed the point. “The same beauty, born of mystery!” We glimpse Malenka in flashbacks (Ekberg sporting a brunette wig). Apparently “Malenka was a brilliant biochemist!” who “studied ancient Arabic alchemists and philosophers and compiled anthologies of black magic and sorcery … searching for the secret of immortality!” (cut to Ekberg very unconvincingly reading manuscripts by candlelight next to a bubbling test tube). Alas, the superstitious torch-wielding villagers assume Malenka is a witch and burn her alive at the stake in the village square! As Count Walbrooke tells it, the family’s bloodline has been cursed ever since and Silvia comes from generations of vampires. “My dear uncle – I’m afraid you need a long rest!” the skeptical Silvia guffaws. “Find some peaceful place – the beach, the country! Anywhere! Somewhere far from this monstrous place!” But even when Silvia pleads to leave and protests “I’m allergic to castles!”, the Count refuses to let her go and vows to initiate her into a life of vampirism …
While there’s zero blood or nudity on view, to its credit Fangs is tinged with fun aspects like voyeurism, sadism, girl-on-girl catfights and lesbianism.  (The castle is haunted by a candelabra-carrying lesbian vampire priestess called Blinka who attempts to seduce Silvia and proclaims things like, “The coldness of the grave is in my blood!”). Director Amando de Ossorio makes effective use of the atmospheric candle-lit haunted mansion set, complete with a medieval dungeon in the basement and a crypt filled with the ancestral tombs. The performance by leading lady Ekberg is spectacularly, compellingly awful. Watch for “Miss Ekberg’s Clothes by Marbel Jr”, particularly the wild orange pantsuit accessorized with a matching swirling cape. (For some reason, Ekberg is also partial to wearing her hair styled in a mop of Shirley Temple-style little girl ringlets). Typical of European co-productions, everyone is obviously dubbed which adds to the sense of artificiality. As Silvia’s fiancé Piero, actor Gianni Medici made minimal impression on me until near the end when the Count has him chained-up shirtless in the dungeon and we get to see his impressive bronzed torso , embellished with what appears to be a sheen of baby oil. For comedic relief, Piero’s wacky girl-crazy best friend Max tags along (he is gratingly unfunny). Campiest moment: when Silvia stops for a drink at the local inn en route to the castle for the first time and casually mentions she is the new Contessa – and the beer-drinking peasants all freeze in horror! Best line of dialogue: when the Count tries to force Silvia to visit the scary family crypt, she wails, “Can’t we do this another day? I’m not the curious type!” And is it just my imagination, or when Ekberg pouts and pensively narrows her eyes in close-ups, doesn’t she alarmingly resemble surgically enhanced American First Lady Melania Trump? Watch Fangs of the Living Dead here.

10 Ground-breaking Earth Satellite Images from 2018
In 2018, our satellites captured beautiful imagery from throughout the solar system and beyond. However, some of our favorite visualizations are of this very planet. While this list is by no means exhaustive, it does capture some Earth satellite images from this year that are both visually striking as well as scientifically informative. This list also represents a broad variety of Earth’s features, as well as satellite instrumentation. Take a journey with our eyes in the sky!
10. Hurricane Florence
Tumblr media
Before making landfall, Hurricane Florence churned in the Atlantic for a full two weeks — making it among the longest-lived cyclones of the 2018 season. When it finally did hit land on Sep. 14, the storm devastated the southeastern U.S. coast with intense winds, torrential rains and severe flooding.
This natural-color image was acquired by MODIS on the Terra Satellite on Sep. 12, 2018.
Images like this, as well as other satellite information, were used to anticipate the impact of the storm. Our Disasters Program created flood proxy maps that were shared with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Guard to estimate how many and which communities would be most affected by the storm, in order to help prepare recovery efforts ahead of time.
9. Australia’s Lake Eyre Basin
Tumblr media
The Lake Eyre Basin covers one-sixth of Australia and is one of the world’s largest internally draining river systems. However, the rivers supported by this system are ephemeral, meaning that they only run for short periods of time following unpredictable rain — the rest of the time, the Basin is a dry, arid desert.
However, when the heavy rain comes, the basin erupts in an explosion of green. In this false-color image captured by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 on Apr. 25, 2018, you can see how the vegetation completely envelops the spaces where the water has receded. (Flood water is indicated by light blue, and vegetation is indicated by light green.)
Satellites are an excellent tool for tracking greening events that are followed by flooding. These events offer opportunities for predictive tools as well as recreation.
8. Alaska’s Chukchi Sea
Tumblr media
A Monet painting comes to life as the Chukchi Sea swirls with microscopic marine algae.
This image was captured off the Alaskan coast by OLI on Landsat 8 on Jun. 18, 2018. After the Arctic sea ice breaks up each spring, the nutrient-rich Bering Sea water mixes with the nutrient-poor Alaskan coastal water. Each type of water brings with it a different type of phytoplankton and the surface waters have just enough light for the algae to populate and flourish. The result is these mesmerizing patterns of turquoise and green.
This image represents one piece of much larger, incredibly complex ecosystem. While one would not normally associate the breaking up of sea ice with phytoplankton blooms, it is an intricate process of the phytoplankton life cycle. The size of the blooms have varied greatly from year to year, and experts are unsure why. Images like these can help scientists track the development of these blooms and link it to other environmental changes.
7. Hawaii’s Kilauea
Tumblr media
Sometimes fresh lava is best viewed in infrared.
This false-color image of Kilauea, captured by OLI on Landsat 8 on May 23, 2018, shows the infrared signal emitted by lava flowing toward the sea. The purple areas surrounding the glowing lava are clouds lit from below, indicating that this image was taken through a break in the clouds.
The Puʻu ʻŌʻō Kupaianaha eruption has been continuously spewing red-hot lava since 1983, making it the longest eruption at Kilauea in recorded history. However, new fissures opened up this year that forced many to evacuate the area. Hawaii’s largest lake evaporated in hours and hundreds of homes were destroyed in Vacationland and Kapoho.
Imagery, seismometers and ground-based instruments were used to track the underground movement of magma. Infrared imagery can be incredibly helpful in disasters like this when you to view data that cannot be observed with the naked eye.
6. California’s Woolsey Burn Scar
Tumblr media
Nothing quite encapsulates the destruction of a wildfire like a photo from outer space.
This image of the Woolsey Fire aftermath in Southern California was captured on Nov. 18, 2018 by the Advanced Spaceborned Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on the Terra satellite. This false-color infrared image has been enhanced to clearly show the burned vegetation (indicated by brown) and the vegetation that survived unscathed (indicated by green).
The Woolsey Fire clearly left its mark, with almost 152 square miles (394 square km) and 88% of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area badly burned. Images like this one can assist fire managers in the area plan for recovery.
5. Bangladesh’s Padma River
Tumblr media
As the years go by, the Padma River grows and shrinks, twists and turns. It never has a fixed shape, and as a result, thousands of people must regularly adapt to the constant changes in the river’s 75-mile (130-km) shoreline.
This image captured on Jan. 20, 2018 by OLI on Landsat 8 depicts one of the major rivers of Bangladesh. For thirty years, scientists have been tracking the erosion of the river with satellite imagery. Combinations of shortwave infrared, near infrared, and visible light are used to detect differences year-to-year in width, depth, and shape of the river. Sometimes the river splits off, but then rejoins again later. These patterns are created by the river carrying and depositing sediment, shaping the curves of the path of water.
Monitoring the Padma River is going to become especially important as a new bridge development project advances in the Char Janajat area. Although the bridge will most certainly help shorten travel times for citizens, nobody is quite sure how the river erosion might affect the construction and vice versa.
4. Alaska’s Yakutat Glacier
Tumblr media
It’s hard to believe that Harlequin Lake was once all dry land — but it only started to form once Yakutat Glacier started melting. The lake appeared at the beginning of the twentieth century, and has been growing rapidly ever since.
In this hauntingly beautiful image, captured on Sep. 21 2018 by OLI on Landsat 8, the effect of climate change is apparent — especially when compared to earlier images of the region.
Unless the climate warming starts to reverse very soon — which scientists consider very unlikely — Yakutat could be gone as soon as 2070.
3. South Africa’s Theewaterskloof
Tumblr media
Cape Town is a seaside city planted on the tip of South Africa. It’s a city known for its beaches and biodiversity — it also almost became known as the first major city to officially run out of water.
This image of Cape Town’s largest reservoir — Theewaterskloof — was acquired on Jul. 9th, 2018 by OLI on Landsat 8. By the time this photo was taken, the city’s main reservoirs stood at 55%. This was a huge increase from where it stood just six months earlier: just 13%.
The severe water shortage in the region started in 2015, only to become more threatening after three successive and unusually dry years. The entire city was preparing for Day Zero — the day the tap water would be shut off.
Despite forecasts that Day Zero would arrive in April, a combination of heavier rains and local conservation efforts restored the majority of the reservoir.
2. Aerosol Earth
Tumblr media
Aerosols are all around us. From the smoke from a fire, to the dust in the wind to the salt in sea spray — these solid particles and liquid droplets are always swirling in our atmosphere, oftentimes unseen.
The Goddard Earth Observing System Forward Processing (GEOS FP) model uses mathematical equations to model what is happening in our atmosphere. The inputs for its equations — temperature, moisture, wind, etc. — come from our satellites and ground sensors.
This visualization was compiled on Aug. 24, 2018 — obviously a busy day for aerosols in our atmosphere. Swirls of sea salt (indicated by blue) reveal typhoons Soulik and Cimaron heading straight towards South Korea and Japan. A haze of black carbon (indicated by red) suffuse from agricultural burning in Africa and large wildfires in North America. And clouds of dust (indicated by purple) float off the Sahara desert.
1. Camp Fire
Tumblr media
With nearly a hundred fatalities, hundreds of thousands of acres burned and billions of dollars of damage, the world watched in horror as Camp Fire grew to become the most destructive California wildfire in recorded history.
This image was captured on Nov. 8, 2018 by OLI on Landsat 8 on the same day Camp Fire ignited. It consolidates both visible light and shortwave-infrared light in order to highlight the active fire. Strong winds and dry conditions literally fanned the flames and spread this wildfire like a rash.
This image has not only become the iconic portrait for Camp Fire, it is also sobering representation of how quickly a fire can grow out of control in a short amount of time. Even from space, you can almost smell the massive plumes of smoke and feel the heat of the fires.
Whether you realize it or not, our Earth satellite missions are collecting data everyday in order to monitor environmental changes and prepare for natural disasters.  If your interest is piqued by this list, head over to the Earth Observatory. The Earth Observatory updates daily with fresh, new content — brought to you by none other than our eyes in the sky.

FINAL TUTORIAL ASSIGNMENT
Neo-Colourism is a contemporary art movement that began in South Africa’s Mother City, Cape Town, yet it has spread to various other countries that were affected by colonialism especially those belonging to the Commonwealth. The aim of the movement utilizes the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights remains as relevant today as it was on the day in 1948 that it was proclaimed and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. Its article 12 states that “no one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.”
Historically people of colour have been portrayed in colonialist art as savages and modern art as objects to be fetishised. For example, it is visible in the painting Tahitian Women on the Beach which is an 1891 painting by Paul Gauguin. The painting depicts two women on the Pacific island of Tahiti on the beach. The painting is currently in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay, located in Paris, France. To many, Gauguin was a fraudulent man, exploiting the myth of the noble savage to satisfy his exotic fantasies while boosting the market for his art back home. He is one of history’s greatest dilemmas, and more than a century after he painted his controversial compositions of nude, brown-skinned Tahitian girls—including several of his pubescent lovers—the art world continues to grapple with his legacy.
Locally, Irma Stern can be seen as South Africa’s Gauguin to a certain degree. Stern painted some of the various cultures in the Cape, however, she painted stereotypes of people of colour naming her paintings Indian and Malay Woman while her portraits of Europeans humanised them by calling them after the model. Mary (1941) is an example of this racist narrative that she has imposed upon her work.
Neo-Colourism was started with intent to reclaim the way people of colour are usually portrayed in Modern art through a colonial lens or a Eurocentric view. The movement was founded by a rebellion of POC students in Cape Town that were disturbed by the content and examples used in their art theory lectures. Very few POC artists were taught and therefore art students were mainly exposed to white artists’ creations and not creations of cultures that they originate from. Therefore, Western culture holds an overwhelming presence that casts a shadow over the world while indigenous cultures are forced into extinction.
Neo-Colourists aim to reclaim and encourage authenticity by portraying the cultures they originally come from as well as the POC experience in a contemporary way that only one that has experienced it firsthand would be able to visualise. To change the narrative from only seeing people of colour portrayed as members of the service or submissively. Neo-Colourists aim to popularise and reclaim the way people of colour are portrayed which usually finds its roots from colonial times. Artists from this movement want to change the negative narrative as they believe it discourages POC youth from trying to break the mould.
The student collective that started this movement is pleased with how fast the movement is growing among others. “We were anticipating backlash because of how politically motivated it may have seemed based on the current affairs in our country and the world but the reception of it was incredibly reassuring” says the spokesperson of the collective.
The movement first took inspiration from candid moments in the collectives life and occurred to them accurate representation of POC lives are far and few. The collective started as an underground society that would meet after class to discuss issues they faced in university but also in the wider community. As creatives a discourse on misrepresentation in the art world was inevitable. They decided to take action by firstly promoting POC artists but also by encouraging other students to tell their story in their own work.

THE SHORES OF BOHEMIA
Tumblr media
A lawyer, literary agent, and longtime Cape Cod resident, Williams draws on personal interviews, memoirs, biographies, and cultural histories to create a generous, commodious portrait of the communities of artists and writers who flourished on the Cape from 1910 to 1960. Cheaper than Greenwich Village, where many of them lived, they came to the sleepy, shabby villages of Provincetown, Truro, and Wellfleet “dedicated to radical political reform, a new exploration of personal relationships free from Victorian strictures, and the search for a new ‘American’ voice in writing, painting, architecture, and theater.” Through the years, the towns attracted a stellar population of playwrights (Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Williams, Susan Glaspell) who presented their work at the Provincetown Players; poets (Edna St. Vincent Millay, e.e. cummings); novelists (Mary McCarthy, Robert Nathan, Norman Mailer); artists (Edward Hopper, Anni Albers, Hans Hofmann); literary critics (Edmund Wilson, Daniel Aaron); activists (John Reed, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn); editors (Max Eastman, Philip Rahv); and scores more. Some were drawn to communism and anarchism, all to intellectual rebellion; some enjoyed independent wealth, others struggled financially. Together, they created a bohemian world of “cocktails, beach parties, and long, boisterous dinners, all liberally fueled by alcohol.” Even during Prohibition, alcohol flowed freely, sometimes spurring creativity and freeing inhibitions, often eroding “professional promise and domestic happiness.” Men and women changed partners so often, some readers may have difficulty keeping track. Children suffered, ignored or even abandoned by self-absorbed parents. “When mixed with multiple divorces,” Williams notes, “the world they created for their children was both unsafe and enticing.” Williams sets the inhabitants in historical and political context: women’s suffrage, labor strikes, the trial of Sacco and Vanzetti, two world wars, the Depression, the Spanish Civil War, antisemitism, and a hunt for communists, all of which had an impact on their lives, loves, friendships, and work.

❤This painting is about loving yourself just as you are, nature & spirituality. A personal response to the first lockdown, 'Rooted' kind of happened as I explored my Honest Joy ink drawings (ah, see the link with my last two posts...😁). This painting came from an ink drawing which came from an older painting of mine. I'll explain more next post - with images.❤ #mentalhealthawarenessweek2021 ❤ ❤Consciously celebrating myself and my mixed heritage (if you didn't already know you may have guessed I have American Indian heritage - also less well known is that locs are part of American Indian history too) was special for me. As someone who grew up feeling different & struggled with it along with low self esteem, to totally embrace myself and celebrate what makes me different / unique is significant for me. ❤Like many others, being in nature was great for my body and mind in lockdown. My awareness of it and its value grew and won't be reversed. At the time I painted this there were many ferns, bright blue skies, visits to the beach and we were seeing peacocks daily as a group live nearby. Faith and spirituality are very important to me and that is represented here. ❤This painting has been chosen for something very special I will be able to share more with you in the future. ❤Be kind to yourself folks x ❤💙💚❤💙💚❤🌈 [Image Description: artist with a self-portrait & images of the painting: the artist looks up, locs flowing down. She wears a red cape. A gold collar reads "she laughs without fear of the future". The background is light blue, a white circle with rays coming out is behind her, fern leaves are either side and peacock feathers show behind and above her head in a gold and blue circle.] . . . #beth_louella_art #beautifulart #colourfulart #loveart #mentalhealth #wellbeing #mentalheathweek #loveyourself #selflove #selfportrait #selfieart #selfie #fridakahlo #gustavklimt #femaleportraits #womenartists #feministart #meettheartist #isleofman #workingartist #fineart #contemporaryart #bipocartist #scripture #spirituality #spiritualart #strength #americanindian #nativeamerican (at United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CO01X1XpOid/?igshid=zdwdmm1lm68v

NASA Astronaut Leland Melvin Told Bill Nye That a Police Officer Came Close to Ending His Career Before It Even Started
"You and I wouldn't be having this conversation right now because I would have been in prison in the prison system. And once you get in that system, it's sometimes very hard to get out."
— Dave Mosher | Business Insider | June 13, 2020
Tumblr media
NASA astronaut Leland Melvin wears a spacesuit and is kissed by his dogs during an official photo shoot. NASA
Leland Melvin — A Black Astronaut, Engineer, and NFL Football Player — recently hosted NASA TV's coverage of the first crewed rocket launch by SpaceX on May 30.
Before the launch, Melvin juxtaposed the mission with the police killing of George Floyd. "America, let's get our crap together, this is unsatisfactory. We gotta stop this," he said.
Bill Nye later interviewed Melvin after the launch about his life, career, and struggles with racism. Melvin revealed that, as a new high-school graduate, he was nearly arrested on false charges.
"You and I wouldn't be having this conversation right now because I would have been in prison," Melvin said, had the incident resulted in his arrest. "Once you get in that system, it's sometimes very hard to get out."
Melvin said it's not enough just to be a "good" person when it comes to racism: "If you sit there and watch and allow that atrocity to take place ... you're a part of the problem."
Leland Melvin launched to orbit twice aboard NASA space shuttles. Long before his decorated astronaut career, though, Melvin was a materials science engineer and even got drafted by the NFL to play for the Detroit Lions.
But in a conversation with famed science communicator Bill Nye, who's the president of the nonprofit Planetary Society, Melvin revealed a moment where his future hung in the balance — between a meteoric career and the prison system — because of the color of his skin.
In 1979, Melvin had just graduated from Heritage High School in Lynchburg, Virginia, and was enjoying his time off before heading to the University of Richmond, where he'd go on to earn a bachelor's degree in chemistry.
"I was in a car with my girlfriend after graduation, and a police officer rolls up on us," Melvin told Nye, each of whom are friends, in a YouTube video published by the Planetary Society. "We were just making out, talking, whatever."
When the state trooper approached the car, Melvin said the officer pulled his girlfriend out and put her into his cruiser. While in his custody, the officer tried "to convince her that I was raping her, because he wanted me to go to jail," Melvin said.
"He said, 'If you don't say that he's raping you, I'm gonna take you to jail, your parents are going to have to come get you, and then you're going to have a record,'" he added, paraphrasing the officer's words to his girlfriend at the time. "She said, 'No, I love him, he's my boyfriend, he's going to college on a football scholarship, he's this and that,''" and that she was headed to college, too.
Eventually, Melvin said the officer gave up and let them go.
Had he been arrested on false charges, Melvin told Nye, "you and I wouldn't be having this conversation right now, because I would have been in prison in the prison system. And once you get in that system, it's sometimes very hard to get out of that system."
'America, Let's Get Our Crap Together'
Tumblr media
SpaceX's Demo-2 mission, launched with a Falcon 9 rocket, lifts off with NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley inside a Crew Dragon spaceship. SpaceX
Nye and Melvin spoke about two weeks after he drove down to Cape Canaveral to witness SpaceX launch its first people into space: NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley.
Melvin provided live commentary on NASA TV in a joint broadcast with SpaceX during the mission's launch. On May 30, the two men soared to space inside the private company's new Crew Dragon spaceship atop a Falcon 9 rocket.
But after a scrubbed launch attempt on May 27 — as the US was reeling with protests over a white police officer's killing of George Floyd, a Black man, just two days earlier — Melvin stepped onto Cocoa Beach in Florida to record his thoughts in a video he uploaded to Instagram.
"This has got to stop. There's a pandemic now against Black men in this country, and I truly feel that it's hatred, it's evil, it's racism — it's all of these things — but it's the good people beside these people [who] are complicit, that allow this continue to go on," Melvin said in the video, which was later highlighted in a Space.com story.
"I am heartbroken ... I'm looking at the juxtaposition of doing the most technologically advanced thing — sending people to space — but a man dies in police custody?" he added. "America, let's get our crap together. This is unsatisfactory. We've got to stop this. And it's going to be the good people that do nothing now that start doing something to stamp this hatred, evil, and racism out."
During his chat with Nye, Melvin explained the connection he felt in watching the video of Floyd's death. (Derek Chauvin, the officer in Minneapolis now charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter, kneeled on Floyd's neck as the man pleaded not only to breathe, but for his mother.)

"Bill, I started crying," Melvin said. "I think, that could have been me, that could have been Bobby Satcher — the first time two African American men were in space together — on STS 129," Melvin said, referring to his last spaceflight in November 2009.
Melvin expressed optimism that things could change if the "good people" stop watching, step off the sidelines, and consistently speak out against racism they see while also pushing for reforms of racist policies and systems that have persisted in America for generations.
"I think we're in an inflection point in our country, really in the world with civil rights," he said.
Of the Black Lives Matter movement, and addressing the refrain among unsympathetic supporters that "all lives matter," Melvin acknowledged the hurt of other communities. But he emphasized the all-too-often deadly consequences of systemic racism against Black people, who are disproportionately killed by police relative to other races.
"'Black Lives Matter' doesn't mean that all lives don't matter. There's a pandemic in the Black community now that's causing our lives to be squashed out," Melvin said. "So we have to focus on the Black lives right now."

New from Robert Daniels on 812 Film Reviews: CIFF Reviews: Atlantics, Vitalina Varela, and Invisible Life
Other than love, no human emotion permeates as potently as loss—partly because grief is love’s complication. At the Chicago International Film Festival, three foreign language pictures: Atlantics, Vitalina Varela, and Invisible Life intimately reinvent the melodrama to heartening effect— accomplished through exemplary filmmaking, in three nourishing portraits of loss.
Tumblr media
On the shores of Dakar, the capital city of Senegal—surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean’s lightning striking waves, sees Mati Diop’s Atlantics: which in its wake  leaves a ghost story enlivened by love and economic instability.
In Dakar, a skyscraper, mirroring a glass Barad-dûr, remains unfinished as chaos holds sway. Senegalese construction workers perform near mutiny, as the developer Mr Ndiaye (Diankou Sembeneowes) owes many of these young men up to three months worth of backpay. One of these workers is Souleiman (Ibrahima Traoré): who’s madly in love with Ada (Mame Bineta Sane, giving a sensational performance)—betrothed to the wealthy Omar (Babacar Sylla) in an arranged marriage. While Souleiman and Ada’s teenage affection for one another courses deeply, the economic struggle in Darkar remains cavernous. To make real money, the young men: including Souleiman, board a boat to Spain—braving the long and arduous journey across the ocean.
Atlantics sets off as a tale of star-crossed lovers: Ada and Souleiman separated by an ocean. But after her wedding bed mysteriously becomes engulfed in flames, it turns into Ada’s struggle for independence, eschewing the control of her parents and Omar. In the meantime, eyewitness reports say that Souleiman—who should still be at sea—set the fire. Inspector Cheikh (Abdou Balde) comes to investigate, but the origins of this crime crests in several phantasmagorical swells.
Diop fashions a mood: a deliberate swirl of Ada’s grief and her struggles against sexism. Often, in these instances, Diop can be caught solely existing in a stream of spirits rather than moving through a series of terrifying events. She absorbs the surroundings, catching the sounds of waves and the torn down dusty winds. Gorgeously shot by cinematographer Claire Mathon, we’re entranced by haunting specters—where the sun, the haze, and the ocean’s water soaking Dakar and Ada are bathe in regret. And by that same token, Diop—under the sun, the haze, and the ocean’s water—fashions a mesmerizing piece on love’s survival—even under the weight of oppression.

The Cape Verde set Pedro Costa film Vitalina Varela opens with impressionistic strains of mourning: Black men in suits walking down a somber compact lane with crosses planted high above the surrounding walls, foreshadows this somber tale of loss youth that mixes horror and magical realism.
Set in the Lisbon shantytown of Fontainhas, and starring the eponymous Vitalina Varela—who previously starred in the Costa’s Horse Money, Varela arrives back upon the death of her husband. The now deceased man—who she built a house with, then left her and promised to bring her to Lisbon—left multiple broken promises. Varela is left to sort through feelings of abandonment and betrayal, while confronting the secrets left by a person she may never have really known. Along the way, she meets a guilt-ridden priest (Ventura). He spends his days wandering the streets of Fontainhas mumbling prayers to his long gone parishioners, devout believers he turned away and then lost in a bus accident. Varela, once part of his flock as a young girl, now needs him. She yearns to speak to her husband, to gain the answers left unchecked in life, to move on.
Costa weaves their plight through mesmerizing dreamlike nocturnal images, sourcing from magical realism to adorn discussions of mourning and death: One can only speak to the dead through Portuguese says Ventura. Vitalina Varela lends itself to instances of lyrical beauty. A storyteller should always understand when logic impedes upon poetic interpretation, and Costa, more than any other knows such. Does he need to explain the metaphorical domestic doom of Varela living in the crumbling house her husband built? Is he required to justify these divine moments, like a silhouetted Valera standing upon her roof while the wind violently whips around her? No, masters of the elegiac need not measure every somber sigh. In this Portuguese drama, Costa proves his immense talent for matching the esoteric with the human.

The author Antonya Nelson once remarked on William Trevor’s short story ‘Folie à Deux,’ “[it’s] a connection that once existed,” or the loss of a friend. We initially see Eurídice (Carol Duarte) and Guida (Julia Stockler) sitting on a smooth rocky beach, surrounded by the jungle. Later, they lose each other among those hostage taking trees, a metaphorical opening for the wilderness of life and oppressive gender roles that halts their close sisterhood in Karim Aïnouz’s hauntingly melodramatic Invisible Life.
Set during the 1950’s in Rio de Janeiro, Eurídice and Guida’s separation begins very early. The teenage Eurídice dreams of studying piano at a conservatory in Vienna. Guida is entangled in a relationship with a Greek sailor Iorgos. After a night of romance, where she leaves her sister to cover for her, Guida runs off to marry her beau. That decision will have dire consequences for both as Eurídice becomes married to the feeble Antenor (Gregório Duvivier) while Guida is left pregnant by the playboy Iorgos. The now childbearing sister is disowned by her father and cut off from all contact from Eurídice.
Aïnouz’s narrative is made all the more poignant because of how unnervingly close Eurídice and Guida come to reuniting and the multiple ways morally weak patriarchal figures lock them away. Partly epistolary, their father holds onto their years-long correspondence, hiding them from each respective party—proverbial messages in a bottle left adrift due to an obstinate tide. Moreover, Guida can’t travel to Vienna to search for her sister because the law doesn’t allow a passport to a woman without her husband’s signature. Nevertheless, unbeknownst to Guida, Eurídice remains landlocked from traveling to Vienna by a husband who believes his wife’s place is at home. All the while, both live decades in Rio de Janeiro without the other knowing. The events move with the wistfulness of a dream, and the emotional trauma of a nightmare.
Lost in the metaphorical jungle, the gulf between their sisterhood spans mere blocks. However, the true tragedy of Karim Aïnouz’s potent Invisible Life arrives with how long they spend before they know relief.

5 Things We Love to do in and around Pula
There are many interesting places and events that you may not find in regular tourist guides and here we are a just a few of our favourites:
1 VISITING NEARBY ISLETS AND LIGHTHOUSES
We love swimming and snorkelling in places that are only approachable by boat. We either visit the islets scattered along the coast (some with the lighthouses on them), find a quiet bay surrounded with steep rocks, or sail to the very end of the Istrian peninsula and visit an islet of Fenoliga just off the Cape Kamenjak. There you can see imprints of dinosaur's feet, as he was marching in a straight line in the direction of the sea. The dinosaur was accompanied by a smaller friend who walked on his left side. The sea around the islet is beautifully clear and great for swimming and snorkelling, however, we would strongly discourage any attempt of swimming to/from Cape Kamenjak due to very strong currents between them. It is always best to stay near the islet or your anchored boat/sail and ensure that you can always return to safety.
2 RESTING IN SAFARI BAR AFTER WALKING THE DINOSAUR TRAIL
Cape Kamenjak is the very end of the Istrian peninsula. It can be accessed from Premantura by car, bicycle, boat or by foot. The place you should not miss is the Safari Bar. It's a very popular outdoors bar at the end of the Peninsula made of all sorts of things found on the coast, such as floating planks, fishermen's nets, pieces of wood, fishnet floaters etc. The Safari Bar brings out the child in you and is a source of endless joy for kids as they discover many wonderful hand made contraptions to play on, hidden in the 'jungle'. You can get a bum massage on a slide made of fishing net floaters, swings hung on three-metre poles that make you feel like you're flying, a large rotary wheel... well, let's not reveal it all, but according to many, it's a 'must-see'. The Dyno lovers will appreciate the Dynosaur Trail that runs alongside the Cape Kamenjak, and if you bring a dog, you'll appreciate the Doggy Bar. We made the below photos while visiting Safari Bar in winter (New Year's Day) and we had it all to ourselves.

3 JOGGING ALONG THE SEA
Not far from our Villa is a Jogging Trail with exercise spots. It runs through a shady pine forest by the coast. While you jog you inhale a pine-scented air (aromatherapy says that it improves breathing, clears the airways and alleviates coughing), mixed with the salty breeze from the sea. You have beautiful scenery to rest your eyes on - the sea, the rocks, the people on the rocks, the sunset, the birds, the boats... Now and then you will come across an exercise spot, marked by a yellow board on the tree. Each one is numbered and gives graphical instructions. There is also exercise equipment, marked with numbers. Take your dog along, a friend or children (they love it) and have a little competition. The path ends on Valkane beach where you can have a refreshing swim and a well-deserved drink.
And here's a little trivia for you: the Valkane beach is the first home of the Valkane Beach Party which was featured on the MTV more than a decade ago. It has moved elsewhere since, and Pula has got many other summer festivals, most of them in the amphitheatre.

4 STROLLING AROUND BEAUTIFUL TOWN MARKET AND FORUM
Pula Town Market is not to be missed. The best time to go is early in the morning when everything is fresh (including the sellers), the temperatures are cooler and people are setting up their stands. The market itself is a beautifully colourful sight. The outdoor market features concrete stands loaded with herbs, fruits, vegetables, flowers, honey, and other local produce. The sellers make a great effort to set their stands up as beautifully as possible so that you'd be tempted to stop, taste and buy.
The market building was built at the beginning of the 20th century in Secession or Art Nouveau style. On the ground floor, you will find the fish market on one side and dairy and meats on the other. On the gallery above there are cafes and various shops and the back wall is decorated with a beautiful mural.
It is a time when citizens of Pula like to stroll around the market, meet friends and have an espresso and a chat in one of the outdoor cafes. By the time most tourists wake up, they are already home, getting ready for a quick swim or cooking. As the word goes, the currency exchange rates on the market are usually best in town.
5 HAVING A DRINK WITH JAMES JOYCE
In the old town centre, you will pass under the ancient Arch of Triumph or Arch of the Sergii which locals also call Porta Rata. Next to the arch is a small cafe Uliks where you can have a drink with Irish writer James Joyce. Mr Joyce ended up in Pula teaching English to Austrian Naval officers. Although he wasn't too happy with his stay in Pula, he wrote a novel here that later became "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man".
Joyce stayed in Pula for about 6 months after which time he was transferred to Trieste. The Cafe Uliks (Croatian for Ulysses) was a language school in those times and there is now a life-size bronze sculpture of Mr Joyce, sitting at one of the tables and we love keeping him company with a cup of coffee or ice cream.
