Sentai Reviews: Mashin Sentai Kiramager
Another instance of it being my first rewatch of a season and Honestly I forgot just how... pleasant? Kiramager was as a season.
I think where Kiramager thrives is its simplistic structure but uses that structure in a way that isn't boring? It takes a tried and true formula and spins it in a way that makes every episode an absolute joy to watch, especially when using common tropes. It was a way of a return for form but in a great way.
Like stated above, this was my first Rewatch of Kiramager with all its movies and specials in relatively the correct places, meaning this was the first time I watched through Kiramager in how I typically show my friends the seasons, and honestly it was a joy. Episode 0 is such a fun way to not clog up your first episode with all the exposition, giving us a better introduction to the other 4 main Kiramagers while having episode 1 focus more on Juuru.
Speaking of Juuru, he was such an enjoyable protagonist. He reminds me of Right from Toqger in a lot of ways and thats a compliment because Right is up there in some of my favorite reds in all of Sentai, so having Juuru remind me of him is a joy. I think the places Juuru actually thrives is his way to connects and interacts with everyone in the cast. His ability to be a great friend and support to the other Kiramagers and the way he can change the hearts of those who are supposed to be his enemies (Garuza and Carantula) is honestly such a treat to watch.
The other Kiramagers are also joys to watch. They all have such distinct personalities without falling into a standard architype for a sentai cast and it works really well. I also enjoy that (for the most part) the other Kiramagers are more than their professions. Tametomo and Sayo better show this point off than Shiguru and Sena, but all of them just arent solely restricted to what their profession is and its fantastic on how they use those professions to build on their characters as it is. Out of all the Kiramagers, Tametomo actually is my favorite because I loved how they took the gamer and instead of making him a nerd he was mostly cool headed and a strategist through and through, and the fact that he was more the leader of the Kiramagers than Juuru was a nice touch, even if they never did full make him their leader.
I think where Kiramager does it's best work is its take on commonly done tropes. Having the Rangers swap bodies with their Zords was such a treat of an episode and the Mashin's being in their bodies was having me laughing the whole. I won't lie, episode 20 absolutely was my favorite episode of Kiramager because Juuru and Mizuki are absolutely precious together and having them be stuck together and Mizuki choosing not to let go is just so precious. (Come on guys, why is there not more content of Juuru and Mizuki!! They're so precious!)
I think the point where Kiramager struggles is its big bad, Emperor Yodom. We don't see the guy appear until super late game and he never really felt like a threat despite being the big bad. Honestly the fake out where Garuza became the true big boss was much more satisfying than Yodom. Hell I would have been okay with Yodonna being the true final boss, but Yodom's entire end game was just... lackluster at best.
Kiramager isn't doing much in terms of revolutionizing Sentai or making the grandest changes to the franchise, and it honestly doesn't need to. I would have loved to see what they would have done with their additional 4 episodes if they didn't have to stop shooting for Covid, but Kiramager, even with its shorter than average run was definitely a treat and a nice return to form.
Final Score: 8/10

Artistic Manifestation
Juru has been experiencing some artist's block lately, and when he drew something, it manifested in the real world.
Ao3 I FFN
Tumblr media
A/N: It’s another fic inspired by the prompt that @asknarashikari  @narashikari got.
--------
These past few days, Juru can't help but feel displeased with whatever he drew on his sketchbook. Everything was still in its place, he colored within the lines, straight lines look like straight lines, curve lines look like curve lines.
For all intents and purposes, nothing was wrong with his art.
Somehow, he still couldn't help but feel unsatisfied with his work.
Even drawing the Mashins, ones that he had already drawn before, still left him discontented.
Long story, short, Juru Atsuta was experiencing an art block.
It was lunchtime at school, he took a break from drawing on his sketchbook and opted to read a manga that Tametomo had recommended him. Apparently, it was a story adaptation of one of the video games he played competitively.
Then he came upon a scene where a character jumped into a pond and that was when inspiration struck.
"Hiramei-king!"
Juru stood up and raised his dominant hand before retrieving his pen and sketchbook to draw what was in his mind.
Juru did a few furious strokes on his sketchbook before raising it up and announced, "Finished!"
Suddenly, the ground Juru was standing on turned into water as the ground around him turned into a pond, submerging over half of his body underwater. He had a few eyewitnesses who simply laughed at his misfortune.
Luckily, he wasn't completely submerged in water that his sketchbook would have been damaged, as he had raised his sketchbook above his head, while the water level was just by his neck.
"Atsuta!" One of Juru's schoolmates called out. "Who did you piss off for the Yodom army to turn the ground you were standing on to a pond?"
It did not come as a surprise to Juru that the general public knew of the current sentai team's enemy, considering they were attacking in broad daylight and kept announcing their affiliation at least that was what Garuza, Yodonna, and Carantula were doing."
"Don't you just laugh there?! Hurry and get him a towel!" Kakihara's familiar voice growled.
The novelty of someone from their school was a victim of a misfire from someone in the Yodom army came right off as students began filing back inside the school building as a teacher went into the water and assisted him to get out of the water.
Kakihara and another classmate converged with Juru and the teacher and gave them each a towel.
Juru was left in the boys' locker room to change out of his wet uniform. He winced as soon as he saw his bare torso. There was no way he could explain the faint scars and bruises on him without people taking it the wrong way.
Hopefully, no one saw his exposed torso, by way of his wet white button-up shirt as he walked from the pond back inside the school building.
----------
Juru was back in CARAT, facing his somewhat irate teammates. Tametomo and Sena were irritated while Sayo and Shiguru were simply waiting for his explanation.
"We had to rush out from our practices because Hakataminami-san told us there was a suspected Yodom activity that was somehow undetected by our sensors, and that you haven't reported it." Sena glared.
"We had to rush to your school outside of our CARAT uniforms." Tametomo supplied. "And we were just about to start practicing too."
"We were simply worried that you were unable to deal with the situation yourself due to a lot of negative circumstances." Shiguru added.
"If it had not been for Kakihara, we would not have known about what happened."
"That's what I'm trying to figure out myself," Juru admitted. "I was just drawing, alone under the shade of a tree, when suddenly; I'm neck-deep into a pond."
"Juru-san, by any chance, did you draw a pond?" Mabushina asked.
"I was," Juru nodded.
"Father would sometimes be in a creative slump and when inspiration strikes, his kiramental would increase exponentially and his drawing would come to life as soon as it was complete," Mabushina explained. "We have already established your connection and similarities with father; I believe that was what happened."
"So that's why you've been pouty lately!" Tametomo exclaimed. "You were in a slump."
"I take it that this can only be classified as an accident?" Sayo questioned.
"That or Juru-san may have some of my diamond tears with him when he manifested the pond." Mabushina added.
"Oi Juru, did you take some of Mabushina's tears?" Tametomo asked.
"N-no! I did not take them."
"Our supply of the Princess's tears are still there, its weight hasn't changed since I deposited them somewhere safe." Muryou entered the room.
"Then, how?" Sena asked.
"There's only one way he could have unknowingly obtained Mabushina's tears, it's when he leaves CARAT in his school uniform and some had fallen into his jacket's pockets or bag," Sayo offered. "Or his connection with the king is just that strong."
"I didn't have Mabushina's tears," Juru denied the claim. "I always clean my bag and jacket when I get home, I would have known if I had somehow acquired some of them and promptly returned then."
"That is indeed a possibility…"
"I guess Juru-san is just that special." Mabushina declared.
"Next time, Juru, tell any one of us if you're experiencing some sort of Artist's block," Sayo suggested. "That way we can ascertain whether you're in danger or not."

Day Nine - Four
(So, a day late. Again. This one is much longer and under the cut. Also, @zarahjoyce, I borrowed from the dialogue you used in your gift drabble for me. I tried to paraphrase it so as not to outright copy and paste.)
@cantellus, @iris-14cheonsa, @zarahjoyce, @princess-sas, @quatresnuku, @nopedontknow
Day Nine: Four
Fandom: Mashin Sentai Kiramager
Characters: Sena Hayami, Tametomo Imizu, Juru Atsuta, Shiguru Oshikiri, Sayo Oharu, Mabushina, Muryo Hakataminami, Gramophone Jamenshi
Pairings: Sena Hayami x Tametomo Imizu
There was supposed to be five of them. Five warriors for five machines. Five machines for five warriors. Now there were only four warriors and Tametomo was blaming himself. It was his fault and his fault alone. If he hadn’t been distracted, she never would’ve been captured by Yodonheim and she never would’ve been brainwashed into fighting against them, against him.
 Earlier that morning
Muryo had alerted them to a Jamenshi in the city. They transformed and headed out to the scene. They were immediately greeted by a scene of screaming citizens and a Jamenshi with a gramophone for a head. Gramophone Jamen was destroying the surrounding area with soundwave-induced explosions.
“We need to find a way to counteract those sound waves. Those soundwaves are what’s causing the explosions, so if we can somehow dampen or mute them, we can end this quickly.” Tametomo strategized.
“What if the rest of you distracted him and I sped in and destroyed him before he had the chance to attack again?” Sena asked.
“You’d have to perfectly time your attack and make it powerful enough to, at the very least, damage Gramophone Jamen, if not outright destroy him. With his sound waves, we can’t guarantee an opening that won’t get you, or us, injured. I think we need to take care of his ability to produce sound waves first.”
Sena didn’t really like that plan. She thought her plan was going to work. While it was true, that even if Gramophone Jamen was restrained, that his soundwaves wouldn’t be, she had to try to take him out in one shot. If she could at least damage his head, they’d have a shot at finishing him off.
“Juru, you’re the leader, not Tametomo. What do you think we should do? Should I try and take him out, or at least damage him, with one attack, or should we try and disable his soundwaves first?”
           “Hey!”
“Sena-san, while your plan is a good one, and while it might work, I actually agree with Tametomo-san on this. We should find a way to disable the destructive sound waves first before we destroy him. We have to be practical about this. We don’t know if your attack is even going to work or connect. I know you’re fast, but Tametomo-san is right. You’d have to perfectly time your attack and make it powerful enough to severely damage or outright destroy Gramophone Jamen. There’s just too much risk in us trying to make you an opening.”
“Juru, as the leader, I trust you. When I had my track practice and couldn’t leave, I trusted you to find a solution then, too. However, this time, I have faith in my plan. Please.”
The emotional side of Juru wanted to relent and let Sena end their fight quickly, but the practical, leader side of Juru was saying to stand by his earlier decision.
“I’m sorry, Sena-san, but my mind is made up. We’re going with Tametomo-san’s plan.”
“Fine, but how are we going to disable the sound waves?”
Sena knew one way. If only she was allowed to enact her plan. Her plan was fully capable of working and it was a good plan. While Juru and Tametomo were right in the fact that they couldn’t guarantee their distraction would work, they didn’t need to provide a distraction for long. She was fast enough to get in, attack, damage, and get out. While the other four Kiramagers were distracted with coming up with a plan to stop the soundwaves, evacuating civilians, and defeating the Bechats, Sena began charging up in order to launch her attack on Gramophone Jamen. As soon as she saw an opening, she charged.
           “Sena, no! Wait! Hey!”
She wasn’t listening. She was locked in a high-speed course, speeding toward Gramophone Jamen.
           “Sena! Stop!”
She didn’t stop. However, she didn’t connect either. Before her sword could make contact with the Jamenshi, he let out another attack. Unlike his explosive sonic attacks, however, this one sounded more musical in nature. The attack hit Kiramai Green head on. She de-transformed and hit the ground, having fainted before she even hit the ground. Tametomo ran toward her, but was stopped when Gramophone Jamen picked Sena up and left the scene.
 Back to the present time
The atmosphere was grim and heavy with sadness as the remaining four Kiramagers made their way back to Kiramai Base. Tametomo and Juru were both blaming themselves for what happened. Both boys were angry, angry with themselves. If only they’d spent more time trying to stop Sena rather than trying to strategize for taking down the Jamenshi. Once Sena was safe, they could’ve strategized.
Juru slammed his hands on the table in an uncharacteristic display of anger. Juru never got angry. He was so unsure of himself that no one would’ve ever thought he was capable of this level of anger. “We need a plan. We need Sena-san back.”
Sayo put a gentle hand on Juru’s shoulder, trying to calm him down. Sayo was a calming force among the Kiramagers, being a doctor and an all-around gentle soul. “We know. No one is saying anything different. We’ll get her back, but we need a good plan. We have no idea what Gramophone Jamen’s last sonic attack did to her. If Yodonheim is planning on using her against us, they took a very valuable asset.”
“Indeed. Sena is a very valuable asset with her speed. Yodonheim must be planning to use that against us. They must know about it from previous battles. I find it difficult to believe they know nothing about it. If we can find a way to incapacitate her before she can use her speed abilities on us—” He was cut off.
“I hope you’re not suggesting we hurt Sena to save her. I’m not going to let you hurt her.”
“You make it sound like that’s the only solution. We’ll come up with another solution that doesn’t involve hurting her.”
Tametomo now resembled a fish out of water. He opened his mouth, as if to speak, then immediately closed it again, as though he couldn’t think of anything to say. He moved closer to the table, finally joining the rest of the team. He was the team’s second-in-command, its strategist. If anyone could come up with a plan, it was him. However, he was at a loss as to how he was going to save Sena. Yes, how he was going to save Sena. It was his inaction that led Sena to be knocked out and kidnapped by Yodonheim. Sure, he yelled out to her, but after she failed to listen to him, it wasn’t as if he went out of his way to actually stop her from acting.
“You know, I’m the reason she was kidnapped. I yelled out to her, but didn’t actively try and stop her. This is my fault.” He balled his hands into fists. “I, and I alone, will be the one to save her.”
“It’s my fault too, Tametomo-san. I yelled out to her too, but, like you, I didn’t try and stop her. But that doesn’t matter. We’re the Kiramagers. We’re a team. We fight as a team, even if it’s to recover a lost teammate.”
“It matters to me. Don’t make me repeat myself. I, and I alone, will be the one to save her. I got her into this mess and I’m going to be the one to get her out of it. And, if any of you follow me, we’re going to have problems.” With that, he left Kiramai Base.
Now they were four, not five. He wanted to find a way to get her back. He needed to find a way to get her back. He didn’t know when he needed her, or when want gave way to need, but one thing was slowly becoming clear. He was falling for his teammate. They’d shared small touches and gestures, seemingly insignificant words and teasing. He just wondered if she saw things the way he did.
He made his way to the spot where they’d fought Gramophone Jamen earlier, hoping the monster would make his way back to the scene. Tametomo wouldn’t have to wait long. Gramophone Jamen appeared on scene, accompanied by a familiar woman in green.
           “Sena!”
“She can’t hear you. Explosions aren’t the only things I can induce with my soundwaves. Using the right frequency, I can use my sound waves to brainwash my targets. They’re completely under my control and can’t hear outside influences. It’s a nice ability, don’t you think?”
           “Let her go!”
“I don’t think so. General Galza and General Carantula were so pleased with me when I came back with my victim in tow. I don’t want to disappoint them.”
Tametomo pulled out his Kiramai Shot and fired off a few shots. However, there was a flash of green light and Sena pulled out her Kiramai Sword, activated the shield, and blocked the shots from hitting her and Gramophone Jamen.
           “Sena! Snap out of it!”
“She can’t hear you.” Gramophone Jamen said in a singsong voice.
If that was the case, Tametomo needed to find a way to damage the Jamenshi. If he could cause some damage, he might be able to break his control over Sena long enough for both of them to destroy the Jamenshi once and for all. He made a practical, but hesitant, decision. He needed to knock Sena out so she couldn’t defend the Jamenshi. He didn’t want to knock her out, but he knew she was strong. She’d be alright.
“I’m sorry about this, Sena.” He muttered. He’d formally apologize to her later, if she didn’t kill him first.
He tried to get close to her, but every time he got near, she’d knock him away with her sword. Another idea crossed his mind, but he had no idea of knowing if it would work. He cancelled his transformation and got close to her again. He was at a very real risk of getting slashed by her Kiramai Sword, but he didn’t care at this point. He just wanted her back with him. He wrapped his arms around her and pressed the red button on her Kiramai Changer, cancelling her transformation. He’d never seen such a strong look of hate as he did in the eyes of the woman he’d come to develop feelings for. He’d already made up his mind. He wasn’t going to lose her. Not again.
Tametomo began rubbing her cheeks with the pads of his thumbs, then, holding her face in his hands, he leaned in and kissed her for a few seconds, though it seemed like minutes. Confident that she was distracted enough, he knocked her out, holding her in his arms. He carried her to a safer place and went off to battle.
“I’m breaking your control once and for all. This ends here and now.” Tametomo re-transformed. “Precise Shooting! Kiramai Yellow!”
Without his shield, Gramophone Jamen was weakened, but by no means powerless. He fired off a sonic blast, which Tametomo dodged. Tametomo fired off a few shots from his Kiramai Shot, aiming for the Jamenshi’s head, the gramophone. The Kiramai Bullets clogged up the gramophone, preventing any sound from coming out.
“No! Now look at what you’ve done! My mind control waves!”
           “Good!”
Sena woke up, her mind foggy about what had happened. She was lying on a bench and she was wearing her uniform. She looked over and noticed that there was a Jamenshi locked in battle with Kiramai Yellow. She immediately transformed and ran to help Tametomo.
“Sena, you’re awake!” There was little time. “We’ll talk later. Right now, we take him down.”
           “Right.”
She pulled out her Kiramai Sword and powered up her final attack. Tametomo did the same with his Kiramai Shot. The two fired their final attacks at the Jamenshi and he fell backward in a shower of sparks, exploding into pieces. The two de-transformed and Sena jumped up and down in glee at destroying Gramophone Jamen. Tametomo turned to her and wrapped her up in a hug.
“I thought I lost you. Sena, don’t do that to me again. I don’t want to lose you. Gramophone Jamen brainwashed you into fighting me because I was distracted. We were strategizing, so focused on coming up with another plan, that we couldn’t watch you. You ignored our orders, both Juru’s and mine. Don’t ever do that again.”
“I won’t, but what’s with this ‘I thought I lost you’ and ‘Don’t do that to me again’?”
“Sena, as we’ve gotten to know each other, I’ve slowly started to develop certain feelings. I almost lost you once and I don’t want to go through that again. Would you consider dating this ace?”
“Nice try, Tame-kun, but we’ve already established Shiguru is the ace of the Kiramagers. But, yes, I’ll go out with you. There’s a condition, though. You have to tell me how you broke me free of Gramophone Jamen’s control.”
Tametomo’s cheeks reddened slightly and he had a sheepish look on his face. “Well, I, um, I rubbed your cheeks a little with my fingers and then we, um, yeah, and then I knocked you out and disabled Gramophone Jamen’s gramophone.”
“What kind of an explanation is that?! What happened?”
“I’m not good at explaining things, so it’s probably best if I just show you.” He cupped her face in his hands, rubbed her cheeks with the pads of his thumbs, and leaned in and kissed her. Sena was surprised, at first. Why was he kissing her? Oh. Oh! Was this what he meant by ‘then we, um, yeah’? As the kiss continued, she softly smiled and melted into the kiss, kissing him back. After a few more seconds, seemingly minutes, they broke the kiss and stared at each other.
“We should probably get back to Kiramai Base before everyone starts to worry. I told them I’d take care of this and warned them not to follow. Let’s go.”
          Sena giggled. “Let’s go!”
The two walked back to Base, hand in hand.
