Jake feeding mac saying "here comes an airplane!" and then mac trying to feed jake the same way 😂

Mac’s been extra fussy lately when it comes to food - Amy has had her share of despair in the evenings, when she takes over parental feeding duties after her day at work, trying to get him to eat even a bit of the lovely little plates Jake dishes up for him. He’ll crinkle his nose (exactly the way she does whenever something doesn’t taste right, but Jake is smart enough not to mention that), tilt his head away from anything offered, picking through whatever’s on the plate in front of him with sticky fingers, inspecting it and then dropping it onto the floor.

“How do you get him to eat anything during lunch?! I thought he could feed himself now, we learned how to hold a spoon last month!” She groans as Mac tosses aside another piece of soft chicken he’s picked out of the creamy sauce on his plate, which Jake simply picks up and eats himself with a shrug. (The five second rule can be extended to a good 10-15 seconds, given the Santiago-style cleaning routine their kitchen floor endures almost daily.)

“It’s a bit of a fight, yeah. And no, you absolutely shouldn’t give him the spoon, unless you want us to wallpaper the kitchen again. I usually trick him with playing and weird noises to get at least some stuff into his gob, and then he snacks on leftovers during the afternoon so he’s still getting a full meal in a way...”

“Weird noises.” Amy repeats while some peas roll over the kitchen floor.

“Yeah, you know, choo-choo train, airplane, that kinda thing. Your parents never used that on your little brothers?”

“None of them were ever this fussy.”

Jake gives her a quick side-eye - they both know that Julian, at least, is the fussiest Santiago either of them know, and that’s saying a lot - while catching some sauce-soaked carrots before they can hit the floor via Mac’s grubby hands.

“Show me the magic, then.” Amy holds up the half picked through plate, sad remains of creamy chicken and veggies, chunks of apple slowly browning on top of some pudding.

And then she gets a full show when Jake takes the plate out of her hands, and it’s far too adorable not to smile about it all, as Jake turns into a private entertainer for their little one who seems as disinterested as anything. He’s turning his head with the most definite distaste someone who luckily hasn’t learned the word No yet can show, but she can see his eyes starting to track Jake’s waving arms as he’s imitating train announcements and making noises that no train has made for at least decades. And when he’s transfixed enough, the choo-choo train does take the chance to stuff at least a spoonful of chicken into his mouth that he absent-mindedly chews on.

“See? Just some good old trickery.”

“Do the airplane next.”

Jake snorts a laugh at how eager Amy sounds, but concedes, and Mac is again distracted from his dislike of his dinner by a spoon-plane going, for some reason, vrrm-whoosh. Maybe it’s a small prop plane, Amy tries to logic where there is none, as the plane lands into Mac’s open mouth with some more vrrm-whoosh twice more in a row, almost emptying his plate.

“The plane’s most effective.” Jake mumbles, and there’s a tinge to his voice that earns him a soft hand to his neck from Amy, a comforting scratch as another cargoload of apple and pudding makes his way towards Mac, but is vehemently denied with a high-pitched whine and shaking arms that almost topple over his high chair. “Which doesn’t mean it’s very effective at all.”

“It’s better than nothing.” Amy sighs, looking at the leftovers on Mac’s puppy-themed plastic plate that Jake’s already scooping up and eating himself.

Jake’s nursing a hangover, and Amy has absolutely no pity for him. Charles had promised her to keep an eye on him on their ‘boys night’, since his tolerance had dropped down massively after basically tee-totalling during Mac’s first few months. But then, judging from the selfies she got, they ran into old beat cop friends, and then, judging from the slurring voice messages she got after that, they’d started some sort of shots competition.

And then he’d stumbled home at 4am, surprisingly tiptoed past the nursery without waking Mac, only to drop straight onto her instead of his side of the bed and declared a strong need for ‘snuggles’ before falling asleep as she tried to push him off, and snoring alcohol-breath right into her face.

So no, he gets no pity as he’s lying on the couch, pretending he’s slowly dying from the sun creeping up into his face. But he does get a bowl of mashed potatoes with ketchup, mayo and fried onions, the most disgusting comfort food Amy has ever had to dish up, but knows will be the only thing he can and will eat after another groan as she presses it onto his belly for him to grab.

“You want to feel better, you need to put something in your stomach.”

“This is cruel and unusual punishment.”

“Your wife making food for you sorry butt is not punishment. Now eat.”

Jake only groans again, holding onto the bowl but not making any moves to sit up, grab the spoon, or in any other way give signs that he’s actually willing to eat it.

Before Amy can scold him again, Mac - currently on free-range as they’re both in the apartment to watch him - has crawled his way over to the sofa, pulling up on the edge of it and almost slapping Jake’s face as he tries to climb up completely.

“Peanut, daddy’s too sick to play-”

“C’mere.” Jake huffs as he sits up at least halfway, and Amy can only roll her eyes at her oh-so-hungover husband suddenly feeling well enough to entertain a toddler on demand, as always. He helps Mac’s climbing attempts until he’s settled into his armpit, essentially, the hand that was previously shielding his eyes from the sun scratching through the little curls shining in the rays of it now.

“Aww, did you come for cuddles, bud-”

Mac leans forward before Jake can even try to kiss his forehead, and both he and Amy watch with wide eyes as he makes a grab for the spoon currently lodged in mashed potatoes, holding it aloft over Jake’s chest - Amy already sees the trembling mass falling onto his shirt in her mind - and giving Jake the most earnest look a baby can muster.

“Vrrm-whoosh!” Mac says, poking the edge of the spoon against Jake’s flabberghasted face, and Amy almost topples over from laughing behind the couch.

“This kid, I swear...” She hears Jake mumble through what is clearly a mouthful of potato as she still holds her sides, giggling and gasping for air when she comes back up to see Mac filling the spoon again.

“Tchutchu.” He says, very matter-of-fact, the spoon making its way back to Jake’s mouth and being dutifully eaten while Amy fights back another laughing fit.

“You’re so smart, peanut.” She says instead, and Jake shoots daggers at her. “Making your daddy eat his food.”

“Don’t encourage him-” Jake wants to admonish her, but the third spoon is actually currently ending up in Mac’s own mouth, and he chews with contemplation before trying to crawl over Jake’s face and chest to get to the rest of the bowl. “Woah-hey- careful there bud-”

“Seems like you gotta share now.” Amy snickers as Mac digs his hand into the potatoes to then stuff into his mouth before Jake can stop him. “Make sure daddy eats at least half, okay, Macaroon?”

Jake clearly wants to say something else, but he’s already getting fed another spoonful as Amy laughs walking back to the kitchen to put Mac’s lunch back into the fridge for dinner.
